Paraplegic Battles UTIs
Good Runners or Junkers
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a paraplegic due to a spinal cord injury back in 1979. I battle one UTI after another, and I am becoming immune to most antibiotics. Why the constant infections? My urologist just ordered a CT scan, but seems uninterested in me as a patient. I am sick of being sick. I straight catheterize four times a day usually. It’s getting very hard for them to match the antibiotic to the culture. At times the infections are so bad I get “foggy headed.” These times I am in misery. The last time I went to the ER hoping it wasn’t sepsis. They gave me antibiotics. I can’t keep running to the ER. My copays are too much. Maybe I need a doctor who specializes in working with people who have a spinal cord injury. -- Anon. ANSWER: Regular drainage of the bladder with a “straight catheter” is the most effective way to reduce the risk of urine infections in a person with a spinal cord injury, but it is not perfect. People may still get bacteria in the bladder. Although it may be worthwhile to review your catheterization technique with an expert, it’s possible to get infections even with perfect technique. You haven’t become immune to antibiotics, but the frequent use of powerful antibiotics will make you colonized with resistant bacteria, so that if you do get an infection, it’s likely to be with a difficult-totreat organism. The CT scan is a good idea to see whether there is an anatomic reason for recurrent (or persistent) infections. I am disappointed to hear your urologist does not seem to be doing his or her best for you. Recurrent infections are dangerous. Becoming foggy headed is a sign of serious systemic infection, and sepsis (a dysfunctional body response to infection) is life-threatening. Some people take antibiotics to prevent infection. Often, these are rotated to reduce resistance. A urologist experienced in spinal cord injury, perhaps in consultation with an infectious disease doctor, would be ideal. ***

When taking a spoonful of banana split, some people may ponder where this sweet reward came from. As with many food origin stories, various people lay claim as the inventor of the banana split. A trusted historical account points to Latrobe, Pa. as the home of the first banana split. Legend has it that Latrobe pharmacy owner David Strickler sliced a banana in two, added scoops of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream, three kinds of flavored toppings, and whipped cream in 1904. Strickler also enlisted the help of a glassmaker to create the first “banana boat” vessel to house his newfangled dessert.
Other cities, including Boston and Wilmington, Ohio, also claim to be birthplaces of this beloved dessert. In fact, Wilmington holds fast to their banana split creation story and even hosts its annual Banana Split Festival. Even though these dessert giants battled it out as banana split inventors, Walgreens pharmacy ultimately is credited with helping to make banana splits popular across the country after adopting the dish as the pharmacy’s signature dessert.
Take a moment to let a business owner know you saw their ad in the Penny Saver, tell a friend about an upcoming event or like any of our posts on social media. These small gestures make all the difference to us.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Are You a Victim of Elder Abuse? Do you suspect, or know, that somebody has been stealing from you? Maybe it’s items from your home? Or maybe it’s your money? Or perhaps you’re being pressured by someone to keep giving them cash. If so, you are not alone. It’s called elder abuse. The biggest problem is that these thefts are often not reported, typically because the one doing the abusing is a family member. Or maybe it’s after the fact, and we’re not certain. Or maybe we don’t know where we should report it. Finances and theft aren’t the only forms of elder abuse. Others include emotional, sexual and physical abuse, neglect and exploitation. Emotional abuse, for example, can include threats, belittling and verbal attacks -- anything that causes mental distress and pain. Exploitation can be fraud, undue influence over your cash or property and being pressured to sign papers you don’t understand. Do you see yourself in any of those categories? The National Center on Elder Abuse website (ncea.acl.gov) is a good place to start. Notice the red banner at the bottom of the page with “Safe Exit” in white letters. If you’re looking at the site and fear that someone will come up behind you and read what you’re looking at, quickly click that red banner and it will take you to an innocent-looking webpage. If you are being abused in some way, help is available. In all states, there are professionals who are required to report suspicions of maltreatment. It’s called mandatory reporting, and in some states the list of professions is very long and varied: chiropractor, occupational therapist, member of the clergy, attorney, animal control officer, bank employee and many others. To get a referral for help, call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-6771116. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Clifton Springs Family YMCA Thankful for Community Support BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
n 1851, the first YMCA in the United States was established in Boston, Massachusetts. A short 26 years later, the Clifton Springs Family YMCA was added to this quickly growing organization which now numbers 2,400 YMCAs nationwide. When the pandemic threatened to cut short the Clifton Springs Y’s nearly 144 years of service to the town and neighboring communities, Y members, organizations, and local businesses alike rallied to keep this beloved nonprofit going strong. As community life resumes in these vibrant villages, many are excited to get out and enjoy the Y once again. Established in 1877, the Clifton Springs Y, a nonprofit, charitable organization has occupied the same building that was built for it in 1879, making it the oldest purpose-built YMCA building in the United States and perhaps the world! In the nearly 150 years since, there have been several small construction projects to try to reconfigure the space; however, in recent years, its membership has grown by leaps and bounds. In its continued efforts to support area families and individuals, the Y began efforts to improve and expand with its Strengthening Communities Campaign. Its purpose? “To respond to the critical challenges faced by our community’s residents,” according to the Y, challenges like health, wellness, and childcare. It was at this point that COVID struck and places like the Y had to pause. Yet, even with its temporarily closed doors, the Y’s loyal patrons continued their support. “We are a member-based organization, and several of our members continued to make their monthly payments even when we were closed, essentially donations to keep us afloat,” explained Clifton Springs YMCA Executive Director Todd Freelove. Member dedication has resulted in a new Health & Wellness Center. “A local, very altruistic family purchased the 1950’s building, which had once been the Palace Theatre, situated across from the Y,” explained Freelove. Now, thanks to the support of the community, the United Way, and a very helpful grant, the building has been transformed into the Y’s brand-new Health & Wellness Center. Freelove is overwhelmed with gratitude. “It almost brings tears to my eyes to think of the amount of support we have received,” he said. “I am in awe of how impactful our community members are. Their support is a great reminder to our staff that our community has a lot of faith in us, and we are very thankful for that. We have an awesome group of people who went above and beyond to make this happen!” The Health & Wellness space has gone from “shipping container” size, about 1,200 sq. ft., to more than three times that size in its newly renovated building. Freelove points out that without community help and support through the United

Way, none of this would have been possible. “It is their YMCA, the people of the Y,” he said. “We hope they will visit our beautiful new facility, improve their health, and make friends.” In the meantime, the childcare portion of the project has not been forgotten. It is temporarily on hold. “We haven’t officially received the word to start Phase II and go back into our original Y building,” explained Freelove. “We support our members and families of all ages and stages of life, whether that be an 18-month-old baby or a 98-year-old senior. We are all learning and growing together, coaching, and encouraging one another. It is a great thing to be a part of.” Although it has already accomplished so much, the Y always seeks to better serve area communities. “We are never just sitting back,” Freelove assured. “We do celebrate what we have done. At the same time, with Phase II, we have another possible project in mind. Over the next 3-5 years, we are hoping to potentially build a new gymnasium, as well. As we move forward, we will get right back to work, continuing our mission, impacting people positively, and making our next chapter an even bigger one!”

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Parking Tickets To the rant about parking tickets given out on July 2: Did you give it a thought that the owner of the abandoned building called the police to have you ticketed? You parked on private property, so you took on the risk of being ticketed and even towed. Maybe park on the street or at a public parking lot next time.
S E V RA Thank you, Pat Privatera! In LeRoy, we are blessed to have a multi-faceted health facility. Available is a certified Physical Therapy Program with great equipment and space for this program; something for everyone. It is available for those needing medical Physical Therapy, people, especially handicap individuals who benefit from water exercises, people who want group exercise, like Medicare Silver Sneakers, water aerobics, access to personal trainers, etc. Children can have birthday parties with use of the gym and pool and group activities thought up by community groups are welcomed. The staff, from the Certified Physical Therapist, to office and other staff are pleasant, helpful, and accommodating. This all came about because of a wonderful Physical Therapist, Pat Privatera. I believe that my participating in water exercises in the heated pool over the last 12 to 15 years has kept me from becoming bedridden.
Future of Social Security I feel very sorry for the generation of young people who think that they won’t have to worry about a shortage of nursing homes, assisted living facilities and sky-high insurance premiums. Your grandchildren and greatgrandchildren are all going to have to pay through the nose. Good luck to you! I will be fortunate enough to be dead and gone hopefully before this day comes. I have been working and paying into this honey pot since age 14. Get off your butts and get a job. To the 85-year-old woman To the 85-year-old woman complaining that her memory is telling her in the last month the administration borrowed from Social Security. Then, she said it was stolen again. So, she’s saying it was stolen twice since January. Here’s some information for you. [Some] say the Social Security program has to borrow money to stay afloat, making it a key part of the national debt crisis. [Others] say Social Security is fully funded with a huge surplus. Do your homework before you comment.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Cat Owner Defends Free-Range Felines
--DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As an owner of six indoor cats, I would like to respond to your recent article (“Cats shouldn’t get free pass to poop”). In the past two years we have had to pay over $300 for damage done by chipmunks to our car. We cannot have a raised garden here due to rabbits, groundhogs, deer and chipmunks. When my cats used to be outdoors, I saw very few birds killed by them. Generally, it was mice and moles. My cats would kill snakes and scare off the squirrels. I brought my cats indoors because of coyotes in the area. Also, one of my cats was attacked by a neighbor and had to be put to sleep. If there were no cats, you would be totally overrun by mice and rats. How would you like that? I suggest that you print this letter, that you do not shorten it, that you apologize for what you said about cats and that you think twice before you put something like this in writing again. Thank you. -- Debra in West Virginia
Hunter.
Hi! My name is I love laying on my mom’s pillow with her when she naps. My brother Walter and I share the same birthday, March 19th. Sadly, Walter went to heaven last Easter. I turned 15 years old this year. Mom has a blanket with Walter’s picture on it and when she did laundry last weekend she opened the washer to see Walter looking up at her ??. He is still with us. Happy belated birthday brother. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
DEAR DEBRA: I will apologize ... for shortening your letter, as we have limited space. You raise many good points based on your personal experience. Cats do keep many rodents at bay, because they are incredibly good hunters. But they are at grave risk being outdoors, from coyotes, from feral cats carrying diseases and from humans who do evil, foul things. The article that offended you raised many good points about the damage that outdoor cats can do to neighbors’ property, and the danger they pose to small creatures. I’m glad you’re keeping your cats safe indoors. Doesn’t your experience prove the point that cats are safer inside? Send your comments, questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Keep a pretty basket by your front door for anything you need to take along when you leave. This can be store returns, backpacks, exercise gear for the gym, your sunglasses, whatever. When you leave the house, check the basket! * “Necklaces can be stored together without tangling if you thread each one through a straw. You can cut the straw to a shorter length for choker-length necklaces or bracelets. No knots!” -- I.A. in Arizona * If you have a little bit of touchup paint left in your gallon can, transfer it to a mason jar. Write the exact color and brand on the lid, and it will be much easier to store. * “Our basement was dark and a little claustrophobic. My husband painted it a lovely sunny yellow and that helped, but it needed something else. I took a photo of the spectacular view at our son’s house in Montana, and had the photo blown up. We mounted it on the wall with some dummy curtains! It’s perfect, and it reminds me of him.” -- R.W. in New York * Need to chill a bottle of wine quickly? Wet a kitchen towel, then wrap it around the wine. Twist the ends to secure, and put the whole thing in the freezer for 30 minutes.
