Gardeners I discovered some strange fungi under a tree in my yard. It has small tan mounds that erupt into long narrow red spearlike structures. Can you tell me anything about it? - Jane The fungus you encountered might be a stinkhorn, as described in this article: http://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/wakullaco/2019/01/08/the-elegant-stinkhorn-mutinus-elegans/ Without a photo, a definite ID isn’t possible. These fungal structures do not damage plants. Rather, they grow on decaying plant matter. Web search “Stinkhorn” for variations.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County I wouldn’t want it in my front garden bed. One person’s milkweed plant probably doesn’t make a difference, but if many people plant it, it could make a difference over time.
Do the milkweed plants in my front perennial bed have any significant impact on monarch butterflies? I am trying to decide if I should keep or remove them. - Joanne Joanne, I understand your angst. The number of monarchs is declining for several reasons, including habitat loss in central Mexico where they over-winter and summer habitat loss in the Midwest. There is a lot of talk about planting milkweed to help them out, but common field milkweed is not a very attractive plant, spreads invasively underground and is difficult to remove.

These two plants are much better suited for home gardens: Common field milkweed (Asclepius they are more attractive and will not Syriaca), serves as both a preferred spread invasively like common milkhost plant (where these butterflies weed. lay their eggs and larva/caterpillars The article from the University of feed) and a nectar source for adults. I very often bring items to the [local] store in [local town], as many people do. Everything sold there is donated, so I can’t get over how most things are marked. Most everything is marked high. Some of the kid’s clothes are marked up as much as you can get brand new if you catch a good sale. Even adult clothes are very high. After all, everything is donated.

Happy Birthday Cha Cha Cha: Saving Birthdays One Classroom at a Time By Amanda Dudek
O
ver 750 Rochester elementary students received birthday presents this school year thanks to local charity Happy Birthday Cha Cha Cha (HB3C). On their birthdays, K-2 students in several of Rochester City School District’s “adopted” classrooms received two new toys, a book and necessary items such as new socks and underwear, a toothbrush, toothpaste, bath soap, a box of cereal, two boxes of mac ‘n’ cheese, two fruit cups, two applesauce pouches, rice, lunch box snacks and more. Inspiration for HB3C struck founder Carrie Green in January 2017 as she was taking advantage of an after Christmas toy sale. “I was stocking up to donate toys next Christmas when I realized these things were just going to sit in my basement for a whole year,” she said. “Many organizations give during the holidays. I thought somebody should do birthdays, too. Then I realized, wait a minute. I’m somebody!” Just like that, HB3C was born. Green wanted to bring birthday joy into the lives of underserved children but didn’t know how. “I thought, How am I going to get presents to these kids?” Green recalled. She sent an email asking if anyone knew a teacher in a high-needs area. Green quickly connected with an elementary teacher in Rochester and shared her idea. “I asked, ‘Can I adopt your classroom?’ and she said, ‘Have at it!’” chuckled Green who originally planned on purchasing all the gifts herself. However, she quickly realized that these children needed much more than toys. “I asked if anyone wanted to contribute, and the response was overwhelming, amazing,” Green said. “I kept calling the teacher back, saying, ‘We can afford to do another classroom!’” That first spring, HB3C brought birthday cheer to 129 kids across seven classrooms. “After that, I went out and filed for my 501c3!” she said. HB3C has grown rapidly, serving 422 children in 2017-2018 and 754 children in 2018-2019. “We look for schools where at least 90% of the student population qualifies for the free lunch program,” shared Green. “We ask for student names, birthdays, clothing sizes and allergy information to create birthday packages just for them.” This outpouring of care is the result of generous individuals and groups across several communities. “The support we’ve received has been wonderful,” enthused Green. “I have received donations from total strangers. $1,000, $10... every donation means so much because we are 100% volunteer and donations based.” Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, mom groups, kids’ sports teams and students seeking community service are just some of those who contribute. “I especially So excited ited for f his ppresents! nts! love when kids come over and volunteer to wrap gifts and stuff bags,” shared Green. “I am all about kids helping kids.” Green encourages children to consider “sharing” their own birthdays by asking for donations or HB3C items in lieu of gifts.

deserves on their birthday.” Green’s charity is making a difference. Teachers said before HB3C, they often struggled to help students remember their birthdays. “If your birthday isn’t celebrated, why would the date stick in your head?” Green pointed out. “Now, students in HB3C classrooms know their birthdays by heart, reminding their teachers ad nauseum!” While Green usually does not deliver the presents herself, she does get to meet the students. At the end of every school year, Green and HB3C throws a big bash at each school to celebrate summer birthdays. “The kids are so cute and so happy,” she said. “Many give me hugs. We bring everyone chalk, bubbles and a popsicle.” Green also receives Thank You Notes from these students. “They write things like, ‘Your present made me feel alive. I love you. Without you, we wouldn’t get any presents. Thank you for being born.’ They know somebody cares.” The Rochester community agrees. This year, Carrie Green was recognized with the ESL Jefferson Award. The ESL Jefferson Award is a national community service award, and ESL makes a donation of $2,500 along with it. Green is thankful for the head start on 2019-2020. “I hope to reach over 1,000 children,” said Green, looking to compassionate communities. “Individuals and groups can do drives, set out one of our collection bins, choose an item from our wishlist or just collect. I have two big green collection bins on my front porch at all times,” she explained. “I also receive a lot of support from schools in communities where there isn’t the same level of need.”

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 5, 1981, President Ronald Reagan begins firing 11,359 air-traffic controllers striking in violation of his order to return to work. Two days earlier almost 13,000 air-traffic controllers went on strike over negotiations to raise their pay. On Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. On Aug. 7, 1959, the American satellite Explorer 6 is launched into Earth orbit. The 142-pound spacecraft featured a photocell scanner that transmitted a crude picture of the Earth’s surface from a distance of 17,000 miles. The photo, received in Hawaii, took nearly 40 minutes to transmit. On Aug. 8, 1863, after his defeat at Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Health Services And Screenings Every Woman Should Know About (NAPSI)-Eating a healthy diet, exercising, getting a regular Pap smear and mammogram-these are just a few of the many steps women can take to help ensure they live longer, healthier lives. However, it can be tough to figure out what to do, given the mountains of information that are available. So, how can women determine which services and screenings are right for them-and when? You can start by being aware of what the science says about preventing certain health conditions and by having an open and honest conversation with your doctor about your values and preferences. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death for women. Fortunately, you can help prevent CVD by addressing important risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. Talk to your doctor about your CVD risk and whether a low- or moderate-dose statin may be right for you. Statins are medications that lower your cholesterol, prevent buildup of cholesterol and fats in your arteries, and reduce your chances of having a heart attack or stroke. Depending on your age and risk factors, taking a low-dose aspirin daily can also potentially help prevent CVD. Aspirin can help keep blood clots from happening, lowering your risk. You can reduce your risk of CVD by quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and becoming more physically active. Cervical Cancer - Screening for cervical cancer finds the disease when it is most treatable. Unfortunately, 12,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Most cases of cervical cancer happen in women who have not been regularly screened or appropriately treated. That is why it is critical for women to get screened regularly starting at age 21. There are several effective options for screening, depending on your age and preferences. The Pap test and the human papillomavirus (HPV) test are the most effective ways to screen for cervical cancer and are done during a visit to your doctor’s office. Talk to your doctor about which test is best for you and how often you should be tested. Breast Cancer - Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women; roughly 237,000 cases are reported in the United States each year. Breast cancer screening aims to find the disease early, when it is easier to treat. Mammograms, which are X-ray pictures of the breasts used by doctors to look for early signs of the disease, are the most effective method of screening for breast cancer. Evidence shows that the benefits of mammograms increase with age, with women aged 60 to 69 most likely to benefit from screening. Still, about one in three women who should get a mammogram regularly do not. If you are between the ages of 50 and 74, talk to your doctor about getting a mammogram regularly. Screening for Osteoporosis - As people age, their bones begin to thin. For some people, their bones become very weak and can break or fracture more easily, a condition known as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects one in every four women age 65 or older in the United States. Bone measurement tests can be used to screen for osteoporosis and identify the likelihood of future fractures. For people who have osteoporosis, treatments are available to reduce the risk of a fracture. If you are a woman age 65 or older ask your doctor about being screened for osteoporosis and other ways to improve bone health. For further information visit www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce. org

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING Aluminum fencing is ideal for those looking for something that’s both ornamental and functional. Aluminum fencing may not appeal to those homeowners whose biggest priority is privacy, as aluminum fences are not solid walls. But aluminum fences are typically low maintenance, and they can be effective at keeping both kids and pets in the yard. Aluminum fences painted with a rust-inhibiting primer may require even less maintenance than aluminum fences painted without primer.

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Start early. Homeowners may feel that the hottest times of the day are when lawns and gardens will be most in need of water, so that’s the best time to set sprinklers or grab the hose and get to work. But in many areas, watering between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when summer temperatures tend to peak, can be both wasteful and ineffective. That’s because watering between those hours will cause much of the water to quickly evaporate, robbing lawns and gardens of the water they need to withstand the heat. Homeowners who water when water is most likely to evaporate may feel they need to water more, and that only wastes water. It’s best to consult a local landscaping professional in your area to determine the best time to water each day, but in many regions the best time to water is between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., when temperatures are generally lower, the sun is not at its peak and winds are not as strong.

Privet hedge, arborvitae or Italian cypress are fast-growing evergreens that provide privacy around a home for homeowners who do not want to install traditional fencing. These trees also provide a natural habitat for various yard animals. Layering various plants of different heights and textures also can create a more natural and less imposing look. Fencing remains a viable option to create privacy and stop noise pollution. Privacy fences come in various materials, colors and sizes, enabling homeowners to choose styles that fit their landscapes.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Leave work behind. The United States is one of the few countries that does not guarantee paid days off. The Center for Economic and Policy Research says one in four working Americans do not get paid time off. The employment site Glassdoor notes that among those who do get paid vacations, 75 percent of employees chose not to use all of their time in 2013. By comparison, Canadians get an average of 19 days of vacation time per year. Stress about making up work or falling behind makes some professionals worry about using their vacation time, and those who do travel may stay connected to the office in some shape or form. Splitting time between leisure and work responsibilities on a vacation can be taxing and take away from the time you need to relax and recharge. Cut work ties and immerse yourself in the vacation experience.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a snowbird who uses two different cardiologists for my health, and I am devoted to both of them. However, they have conflicting advice. I have coronary artery disease and had three stents placed in New York. I am an active 86-year-old woman who walks at least a mile daily and does light weights. My lab results are all normal. I take a daily baby aspirin and Plavix. I’ve done well with them. My Florida doctor wants me to discontinue the Plavix and take just the aspirin, but my New York doctor thinks I should keep the Plavix forever. I honestly don’t know the right course of action. -- S.T.M. ANSWER: Both aspirin and Plavix (clopidogrel) work by decreasing the activity of platelets, the specialized blood cells that start to form clots. They have been shown to reduce blockages of stents, which hold open blood vessels that have been unblocked via a catheter in the heart. There are several different types of stents, and some of them have medications embedded in them, which release slowly over many months. These “drug-eluting” stents require using both aspirin and clopidogrel for a longer period of time. There is some debate about how long to continue these medications, but I have not read any recommendations to continue them for more than 30 months. A study (the DAPT trial) used exact information about the person and the type of stent to make predictions about balancing risks, and the results of the study showed that in your case, using both aspirin and clopidogrel would reduce heart attack risk slightly, but at an increased risk of bleeding. Nonetheless, some cardiologists will continue both medications in some patients if there are no problems. It sounds like your New York cardiologist may have more knowledge about the stent, as it was performed in New York, so I would try to get the two of them to reach a consensus. There may be something about your particular case that warrants long-term treatment with these medications. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: A few years ago, Johns Hopkins produced an article stating that possibly being hard of hearing and doing nothing about it could lead to Alzheimer’s disease. Is that study still valid? -- S.S. ANSWER: It’s been almost 30 years since a link between hearing loss and dementia was first published, and recent research has confirmed this link. It now seems clear that hearing loss increases the rate of decline in brain function by 30% to 40%, independent of other risk factors. Put another way, people with mild hearing loss had double the risk of dementia in 10 years; those with moderate hearing loss, triple the risk; those with severe hearing loss had five times the risk of dementia compared with people of normal hearing and the same age. The brains of people with hearing loss are more likely to atrophy as well. Of course, not everybody with hearing loss develops dementia, and people with normal hearing can. There is some, but not conclusive, evidence that hearing aids protect the brain from dementia in people with hearing loss. However, it is clear that hearing aids can improve social functioning, well-being and some measures of memory. Despite this evidence, many older people with hearing loss do not get it treated.

Always practice summer sun safety When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time.
2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

REAL ESTATE SECTION
1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Dealing with a difficult person can be the kind of challenge you Aries Lambs love. Or it could be an energy-draining exercise in futility. Be certain your goals are worth your efforts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Divine Bovine might be seeing red at having your crisis-resolution efforts overlooked. But others know the truth, and they can be expected to step forward when the time comes. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should be well on your way to finally making that important decision. Having the support of loved ones will help when crunch time comes. Keep a positive attitude. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Feeling uneasy about a move might not mean you’re having a case of Cancerian wavering. It could be your inner sense is warning you to reassess your situation before taking action. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your pride could get in the way of admitting you might have erred. Best to ‘fess up now before a small mistake turns into a big misunderstanding. Make the weekend a special family time. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to please someone with a less-than-glowing opinion of something you value could be a waste of time. If you like it, stay with it. The week’s end brings an answer to an old mystery. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There might be time to make a change. But be honest with yourself: Is it what you really want, or one you feel pressured into making? Your answer should determine your next move. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Change is dominant, but so is caution: Proceed carefully, checking each step along the way to avoid encountering any unwelcome surprises that might be lurking along your path. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It could be a mistake to rely on someone to keep his or her promise without checking out previous performances. What you learn now could save you from a painful lesson later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Taking a strong stand on an issue you feel is too important to ignore could inspire others to follow suit. The weekend is a good time to socialize with old friends and make new ones. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your sensitive nature gives you an insight into the problems of someone close to you. Your offer of support could be just what this person needs to start turning his or her life around. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Financial matters continue to need even more careful analysis than usual. Use caution with investment possibilities. A personal relationship might take an unexpected turn by the week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You appreciate the wonders of the world and enjoy sharing your delight with others.
