STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver Historians say that Mary, Queen of Scots was informed of the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley, in 1567 while she was playing golf. She must have been quite a dedicated sportswoman (or an indifferent wife) because they also say that she completed the round. ***

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Penny Saver

My name is Sassy. I was dumped at the vets where my Mom used to work. I was tiny but thought I was bigger since I hissed at everyone. That’s why she named me Sassy but I’m really a love bug. Mom and I have been through a lot together. Lost Dad a few years ago but I was always there when Mom cried. I moved back to NY with her too. Not crazy about the cold but I sleep with Mom every night.

The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

ach summer for the past 19 years, crowds have gathered at Frederick Farms to appreciate its acres of sunflower fields. Every August, their tall waves of sunshine bring a ray of comfort into the lives of those at the House of John, a hospice nonprofit in Clifton Springs. The House of John mission, “to provide compassionate care, offering sensitivity and support for people as they approach the end of their lives,” has personal meaning for the Frederick family. They have had close friends and family cared for there, including a close friend of Mr. Frederick. Young Jaimee Frederick is third generation in her family, although their dairy farm has had the Frederick name since 1940. “On two weekends in August, usually the second and third weekends, weather permitting, we raise money for the House of John,” said Frederick. “I have been helping since about 1st grade! I would help my dad by picking the flowers, parking cars, being our tour guide, and now, I basically organize it all.”

“We also have wagon hayrides at certain times,” said Frederick. “This year, for the first time, we offered pony rides on our miniature horses.” Frederick Farms also houses goats, chickens and barn cats. Jaimee Frederick brought out her show animals this year as well. “The kids loved the pony rides, and they always love seeing the animals,” she said. “I competed this year at the Ontario County Fair, and I will be going on to the New York State Fair. All of the cows I took actually won.” Frederick herself won Master Showmanship in the Open Show while her niece, who showed for the first time, won Novice Showmanship in the 4H Show. The Frederick Farms sunflower event is free to all, and donations are welcome. The Frederick Family also sells sunflower oil, which is pressed from their sunflower seeds by Stony Brook Farms in Geneva. “They sell it under their label, and we have it bottled with the name of our farm to sell ourselves. Our farm is the only place you can get it with our Frederick Farms label.” Freshly cut sunflowers, sunflower seeds for birds, bottled water and fresh baked goods

are also available for purchase during these weekends. “The baked goods are purchased from Sweet Blessings in Shortsville and Vanilla Bean in Phelps,” said Frederick. Frederick says visitors are also welcomed to take photos of their sunflower fields. Many do, and interest is growing. “A couple of years ago, it started growing,” she stated. “Last year, we had over 2,000 people ride the wagon hayride, but we had over 3,000 people here.” The free event raised $3,500 last year, and Frederick’s goal this year was $4,000, although the numbers are not yet in. “I like giving back,” said Frederick when asked why she continues to be involved. “I enjoy giving, community service and volunteering.” Enjoy this article? DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.

Not only are the costs for each program affordable, but the staff is always so friendly and helpful during their camps! They are great role models for our kids as well! Very proud to live in such a great community that provides awesome activities for the kids in the summer with a very friendly and hands-on staff! Keep up the great work! See you next summer!

with our society, and we shouldn’t waste our time over something that brings the community together. Worst Fast Food Ever! I occasionally go to a fast food restaurant in [local town]. I always go through the drive thru. I would like to point out how consistent they are with their orders...consistently wrong. I have yet to receive a complete correct order. I ordered six items and paid for six items. There were exactly four. My boyfriend ordered a hamburger, and when he got it home it had no meat on it. My coffee was served cold. We’ve ordered and emphasized repeatedly, “no cheese,” only to have said item dripping in cheese. It is so hard to comprehend. Things never used to be this bad. [local county]. When you go into a place of business, you would think that you would be well taken care of. Not there! Three employees ignored my family as we stood there, waiting several minutes to be served. They were standing around off to the side of the cash register, not acknowledging our existence. Then, one employee looked right at us and turned back to the others without saying anything. That same employee had an extra large drink right in front of the register in full view of the customers. The worst part is this is the third time that we have had an awful experience at this place. It has the most unprofessional employees that I have seen in a long time.

women’s heart attacks. I have always heard that symptoms for women can be much different from men’s. Instead of the chestclutching, sharp pain that men can have, I have read that women’s symptoms can be any of these: heartburn or indigestion; pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, back, one or both arms; fatigue and troubled sleep; dizziness and nausea; or extreme anxiety. Are you KIDDING me? I am a healthy, active 63-year-old woman. I have had all of these symptoms at one time or another. If I acted every time I had one of these symptoms, I would be at the doctor’s office every day. How is one to know which symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately, and which to wait a few days to see if it is temporary? -- J. ANSWER: I have seen many letters similar to yours. The confusing problem is that it’s true: In women, heart attack symptoms and the symptoms of angina before a heart attack can include all of those vague symptoms. The same is true of men as well, although it’s more likely for women than for men to have symptoms other than the classic left-sided chest discomfort (people are much more likely to describe angina as “discomfort” or “pressure” than “pain”). So your question is entirely valid: How do you know when to take common symptoms seriously? The first thing I would say is that the greater your risk for heart disease, the more seriously you should take any symptom. Age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, lack of regular physical exercise and diabetes are among the most important risk factors. The second thing I would say is to take new symptoms seriously. If you never get heartburn, for example, then heartburn at age 63 should prompt concern. Third, context matters. Symptoms such as nausea or jaw pain that occur with exercise -- even carrying a bag of groceries or walking up stairs -- is definitely a reason to talk to your doctor. Most women don’t know that heart disease remains their No. 1 killer, far outstripping breast cancer (or any cancer). Both women and men need to take even vague symptoms seriously, especially if the symptoms are new, exertional or if the person has several risk factors. As a primary-care doctor, I’d rather see my patient for her concerns that symptoms may be heart disease than see her in the ICU with a heart attack. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have diverticulosis. At one time I was told not to eat nuts. I have since read that eating nuts is OK. What is your take? Also, are chia seeds safe? -- E.M. ANSWER: There are two answers to this question. The first comes from clinical research, and a very large trial showed that nut and popcorn consumption tended to protect against diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding. This may be due to the high fiber content, recommended in people with diverticula. So most experts allow their patients with diverticulosis to eat nuts and seeds, including chia seeds. The second is practical experience. If someone has had clinical diverticulitis after eating nuts and seeds, especially if it happens repeatedly, it makes sense not to do so.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Save Energy And Money (NAPS)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energyefficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580, based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally sound single- or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. Learn More For further facts and stats about saving money and energy, go to www.iwfa.com.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 27, 1967, Brian Epstein, manager of the Beatles, is found dead of an accidental drug overdose in his Sussex, England, home. In 1962, Epstein was hired in a deal that gave him 25 percent of the band’s gross earnings for five years. On Aug. 28, 1917, 10 women suffragists are arrestedas they picket the White House to demand that President Woodrow Wilson support a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. After the jailed women went on a hunger strike and had to be force fed for months, Wilson finally agreed to a suffrage amendment. On Aug. 26, 1939, the first televised Major League baseball game is broadcast. Announcer Red Barber called the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in New York. The video coverage was somewhat crude. There were only two stationary camera angles.

To save money and energy, have window film installed instead of replacement windows. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Leave the car at home. Americans and Canadians consume more gasoline per capita than any people in the world. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be careful not to allow the backers of a new financial “deal” to pull the wool over the Lamb’s eyes. It could hold fewer plusses and more negatives than you were first led to believe. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good idea to finish all incomplete tasks so that you can devote your attention to next week’s projects. The weekend could hold surprises for romantic Fernandas and Ferdinands. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A workplace suggestion you made a while ago that you might have forgotten could come back with a request to turn it from idea to reality. Your social life picks up considerably this weekend. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Someone from the past could return with an intriguing opportunity for a future project. Check into it, by all means. But don’t neglect your current responsibilities in the meantime. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keeping your claws sheathed and using good humor instead to counter someone who’s badmouthing the Big Cat isn’t easy. But it’s the best way to avoid more problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A workplace situation could improve if you’re less critical and more supportive of those who are, after all, trying to do their best. Let them know you’re there to help when necessary. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A new job offer might not carry all the benefits you’re seeking. Make sure you know what you’re entitled to, what is off the table and what is negotiable before you make a decision. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A social obligation you would rather get out of could hold some surprisingly positive aspects. Why not go and see for yourself? A family member makes a curious request. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Before tackling that new project awaiting you at home or on the job, take time out for some much-deserved pampering to help lift your spirits and restore your energy levels. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your social calendar begins to fill up more quickly than you expected. And that’s great. You deserve to enjoy some good fun after so much time spent on serious matters. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A domestic situation continues to improve, thanks to all the tender, loving concern you’ve shown. A colleague makes a questionable move that you might want to check out sooner rather than later. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A sudden turn in a romantic relationship calls for both a rational and passionate response. Keep the love level high, but also find out why the problem arose in the first place. BORN THIS WEEK: You often set high standards for others. But to your credit, you set the same expectations for yourself. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Maintaining a satisfactory level of disinfectant will help prevent the multiplication of bacteria and algae in the pool. Many pools are kept clean through the use of chlorine products. The ratio of chlorine to water needed to maintain the clarity of the water depends on the size of the pool, the sanitizer used, weather, sunlight and evaporation, and the pH. In many instances, the available free chlorine in a pool when tested should be between 3 and 4 ppm to offer adequate sanitation. Frequent testing will help pool owners gauge how well the pool water is holding chlorine and how to compensate if extra is needed.
