R Community Bikes Inc: Helping Others Move Forward By Amanda Dudek
“T
here were two of us, and we fixed one flat tire at St. Joe’s.” That’s how Program Director Dan Lill describes the 2001 beginnings of R Community Bikes, Inc. “Word got out that there were these guys who could fix bikes,” he recalled, referring to St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality on South Avenue in Rochester. “A lot of the men who stayed there were riders, so they started bringing in their bikes, and things just developed from there.” R Community Bikes, a 501c3 nonprofit, repairs donated bikes and offers them to “Rochester’s most needy adults and children” free of charge. With 150-180 volunteers, R Community Bikes gives away approximately 2,500 bikes while it fixes 3,000 more each year. Since it started, R Community Bikes has given away approximately 36,000 bicycles and has repaired over 40,000. “To our people, bikes are a big deal,” explained Lill. “Since we started, the need grew and grew. We’re giving people transportation, an essential part of the puzzle which gets them to their program, appointment, job and doctor.” “When I retired from teaching in 2002, I wanted to work in anything that began with “H” said Lill. “Hospice: I did that for about 10 years. Habitat for Humanity: I am not good with my hands and tools, so I eliminated that one. House of Hospitality: I did that, and this fell into my hands.” R Community Bikes quickly outgrew St. Joseph’s, moving to its current 226 Hudson Avenue location in 2005 and incorporating as a 501c3 nonprofit in 2008. They also began giving away children’s bikes. R Community Bikes also sells the higher-end bicycles it receives, starting at around $100, to help offset expenses. “A lot of these bikes require special equipment and have special features which your average cyclist would not use,” explained Lill. In 2014, R Community Bikes began providing tricycles to adults with permanent, severe disabilities. “They are in demand,” said Lill. “It is just wonderful to be able to help.”
Dan Lill Da Lill, R Community Co it Bikes, Bike Inc. I Founder Fo de
R Community Bikes also keeps many bikes out of landfills. “Multiply 36,000 bikes by the weight of a bike, and that is how much we have kept out of landfills,” Lill pointed out proudly. “It is an ancillary benefit of what we are doing. Many of us never set out to be environmentalists, although we are by default. We also salvage whatever we can.” The Parts Department is dedicated to Andre and Mary. Andre used to sell bikes out of his house on Driving Park Avenue. When he passed away, Mary donated approximately $10,000 of brand-new parts to R Community Bikes. The program relies on donations and is operated 100% by volunteers. “Our volunteers include machinists, scientists, former Kodak executives, WEP workers doing their community services hours, and you can’t tell the difference,” shared Lill. R Community Bikes also offers a little, free library. “It’s one of only two or three in Rochester’s inner city,” shared Lill. “We are trying to promote bicycles and books.”

R Community Bikes, Inc. promotes bikes and books!
Lill is working on a book of his own. “I have chronicled a lot of the stories of both the volunteers and the recipients,” he said. “One of my favorite stories is about one man who would take his bike and tow a lawn mower behind it. I told him about the book. ‘You’re going to be in it,’ I said. ‘No, no, you should be in the book,’ he said, ‘I’m not going to be in the book,’ I answered. ‘You curve lives,’ he replied. ‘What?’ I said. ‘You curve lives,’ he insisted. So, there are lives going in this direction, and all of the sudden, they turn around, and I was like…” Lill clasped his hand over his heart. “That just cemented him into the book!” “We had another man come by, and he had $1.16 in his hand, four quarters, a dime, a nickel and a penny,” Lill continued. “I said to him, ‘Steve, what’s that all about?’ He said, ‘That’s what I got left over.’ I said, ‘Left over from what?’ He said, ‘From my job that I got because you gave me a bike.’ While this doesn’t happen every day, these are things that stick with Lill, making it easy for him to come in every day. R Community Bikes, Inc. is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at their headquarters at 226 Hudson Ave. Bike giveaways take place only on Wednesdays and Saturdays beginning at 9:15 AM. Bike repairs, free of charge, are completed at the headquarters and in the summer, at five satellite locations. Monday: 4-7 PM at 441 Parsells Ave., Tuesday: Westside Farmers’ Market 4-7 PM beginning June 12th, Wednesday: 9 AM - Noon at St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality 420 South Ave, Thursday: 8 - Noon at 1050 East Ave., Asbury Methodist Church, Friday: 9 - Noon at Cameron Ministry, Cameron St. off Lyell. ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone. Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Better to Sleep on Left Side or Right? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a man in my late 50s. I now am told to sleep on my right side and not my left side, because it’s better for the heart. However, my sinuses seem to open up and it’s easier to breathe lying on my left side. What, if anything, will happen if I sleep on my left side? Can it damage the heart permanently or lead to an early death? -- M.N. ANSWER: Most people can sleep in whatever position they find comfortable without any problem. However, there are a few instances in which sleeping on the left side may potentially cause problems. One is in people with untreated obstructive sleep apnea, in which several studies have shown that sleeping on the left side leads to slightly more breathing problems than sleeping on the right. However, in people who are treated, that should not be a problem. Pregnant women should sleep on their side. Although women have often been recommended to sleep on their left side, either side is fine for the baby. Left-sided sleeping may reduce swelling in the feet. People with known severe congestive heart failure or coronary artery disease and who habitually sleep on the left side have a small increase in death compared with back or right-side sleepers. However, my opinion is that the benefit is so small that comfort and quality of sleep is more important.
MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Undereye circles and swelling can be alleviated when people get to the source of the problem. A combination of treating the sources and masking the issue can help. In severe cases, individuals should visit their dermatologists.

*** Caring for you and the community since 2001.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read that many runners drink too much water and that this can be dangerous. What are the signs of drinking too much? -- H.C. ANSWER: Exercise-associated hyponatremia (“hypo” means “too little,” and “natremia” means “sodium in the blood”) is common for endurance athletes, such as long-distance triathletes and marathoners. It is caused by losing salt and water, mostly through sweat, and replacing it with only water. Most cases are mild and have few symptoms, but if there are symptoms, they are most commonly weakness, headache and dizziness. Severe cases cause disorientation and can lead to seizures and death. In a study of the Boston Marathon in 2002, 13% of finishers had hyponatremia, but only 1% had critical levels. To avoid hyponatremia, you need to ignore the advice to “drink as much as possible” during exercise. Further, most sports drinks do not have enough sodium to protect against hyponatremia. As simple as the advice is, drinking when you are thirsty when you exercise is the best way of preventing hyponatremia while still preventing volume depletion or dehydration.

DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote last year about cod liver oil as a source of vitamin D and omega-3. Can you recommend a brand? -- M.E.T. ANSWER: I don’t like to recommend specific brands unless there are scientific studies showing a difference between brands, which I can’t find with cod liver oil. However, I would look for a brand that is labeled “certified USP,” meaning it is tested for contaminants, and one that has a low vitamin A level (below 10,000 IU daily). You also might want one with high (450 mg or greater) EPA plus DPA (the most commonly recommended omega-3 fats). *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 12, 1940, a collection of prehistoric cave paintings is discovered near Montignac, France. They depict 600 painted and drawn animals and symbols and nearly 1,500 engravings from the Upper Paleolithic period some 16,000 years ago.
The facts about glaucoma When one’s vision is compromised, his or her whole life can change in the blink of an eye. Many conditions can affect a person’s vision, and one of the more common is glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness across the globe. The global impact of glaucoma is significant. The World Health Organization estimates that 4.5 million people are blind due to glaucoma. In addition, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness notes that some estimates have suggested that there will be approximately 80 million people with glaucoma by 2020. If such estimates prove true, that would mean an additional 20 million cases of glaucoma were diagnosed between 2010 and 2020. Vision loss is often associated with glaucoma. However, the National Eye Institute notes that early detection and treatment can protect the eyes against serious vision loss. That makes it imperative that individuals from all walks of life learn about glaucoma, its risk factors and how to recognize it. What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is a term used to describe a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve. When such damage occurs, vision loss and even blindness can result. What is the optic nerve and why does it matter? The NEI notes that the optic nerve is a bundle of more than one million nerve fibers that connects the retina to the brain. The retina is the lightsensitive tissue at the back of the eye that contains cells which are sensitive to light. These cells trigger nerve impulses that pass via the optic nerve to the brain, where visual images are then formed. Because its role is so significant, the optic nerve must be healthy for good vision. What are the most common types of glaucoma? According to the IAPB, primary open angle glaucoma, or POAG, and primary angle closure glaucoma, or PACG, are the most common types of the condition. POAG is most common in white Caucasians and black individuals of African origin, while PACG, which is associated with a greater risk of blindness than POAG, is most common in people from southeast Asia. The Glaucoma Research Foundation says that POAG develops slowly and is the most common form of glaucoma and is caused by the slow clogging of the drainage canals that produces increased pressure on the eye. PACG, which the GRF notes is quick to develop, results when the drainage canals are blocked, resulting in a sudden rise in intraocular pressure. What are the symptoms of glaucoma? Because POAG develops slowly, its symptoms often go unnoticed. Symptoms of PACG, however, are often very noticeable and may include severe and sudden eye pain; blurred vision; bright halos appearing around objects; eye redness, tenderness, and hardness; and nausea and vomiting. Can glaucoma be treated? While there is no cure for glaucoma and vision lost to it cannot be restored, the NEI notes that treatment for early-stage POAG can effectively delay progression of the disease. While at a local restaurant and inn, having eaten our food, we left our payment in the bill holders and left. Someone stole the money we left for one of our bills (We had 3 separate checks.) That money had to be replaced by the young waitress we had. It came out of her pocket. The person who took the money had no conscience. Needless to say, I will never leave until the money gets to the waitress from now on. So, everyone, please make sure your payment gets to the waitress, including any tip. It is not fair that they lose money because someone else is a thief!

I am an elderly woman who has lived in several places across the country. I have always appreciated the work that [business] does. Through the years, my family, friends and I have made donations of clothing and household furnishings. We have always been impressed by the friendliness, courtesy and assistance the staff have given us. In most places, the staff members come right out and cheerfully offer to help to unload the car. I am downsizing and have started my donations. Recently I parked near the entrance to the Donation Center, went in and asked for assistance. I was ignored at first, then told, “We can’t leave

the front door. If we do, we get yelled at.” I was grudgingly given a cart. I am concerned about the heavier items I will be bringing soon. I now feel that my donations are unwanted. Please keep your mess out of the street when mowing your yard. Not only is it unsightly, but it can also be hazardous. Last year, my husband ran over grass in the road, and unfortunately, a bolt from the mower was in the debris and punctured his tire. The tire deflated quickly. This could have caused a blowout which could have ended badly. It’s your grass; keep it in your own yard.

AARP notes that the Internal Revenue Service offers tax breaks such as the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit that older students can take advantage of to lessen the blow of tuition costs, which have risen considerably since today’s men and women over 50 were in college. Older men and women may also be able to take advantage of 529 college savings accounts they opened for their children that their kids did not end up needing. AARP also notes that men and women over 50 who want to apply for financial aid must be prepared to enroll in more than one class and in more than just a continuing education program. More information is available at aarp.org.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR Fill it with spirits No bar is complete without alcohol and mixers. Homeowners can buy the types of spirits they love and complete their bars with the basics for mixing. When stocking a bar, keep in mind that everything does not have to be top-shelf. Vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and whiskey are some of the more popular spirits. Simple syrup, fresh fruit, club soda, cola, and bitters are examples of versatile mixers. Entertaining guru Martha Stewart says to have enough supplies on hand for guests. Expect each person to have three drinks (requiring three glasses), use a pound of ice, and three cocktail napkins per two-hour party. Don’t forget to also have nonalcoholic items on hand for those who don’t imbibe.
GROWING TRENDS IN TODAY’S HOMES Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.
GENERAL CONTRACTING Did you know? While it might be tempting to lower mower blades when summer temperatures reach their hottest, it is possible to cut grass too short. Homeowners who want to cut back on the time they spend mowing their lawns under the hot summer sun should avoid lowering their mower blades too low, as doing so can cause significant damage to the lawn. Lawns that have been cut too low are less capable of surviving drought and are unlikely to thrive. When grass is cut too short, the stem tissue from the grass is exposed, and that exposure can lead to unsightly grass that turns yellow or brown. Grass that is cut too short also may suffer from weaker roots, which in turn makes the grass weaker and less likely to grow in strong. In addition, weaker grass is more susceptible to weed growth, which can be both a nuisance and an eyesore. When mowing, homeowners should remove no more than one-third of the grass blade. Mowing at this height will promote strong roots and protect the grass when the weather gets especially hot in the summer. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE.
TREE SERVICES
In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers.

The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It might not be wise to pursue goals involving others, unless you can stop impulsively rejecting new ideas. Either open your mind or wait until next week, when this “ornery” mood passes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time for the Bovine to be creative and practical for yourself and your surroundings. Shop wisely, not impulsively, and keep your Bull’s eye focused on quality, not quantity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should feel more confident about moving ahead with plans that had to be delayed by an unexpected turn of events. Also, family matters might need more time than first anticipated. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be considerate of others as you move into a new area in your professional life. Take time to meet people and discuss mutual goals. The more you get to know each other, the better. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss could get your ideas noticed quickly. But it would be best to present your case, and then wait for a reaction to follow in due course, rather than try to force it to happen. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Unkept promises might cause plans to go awry this week. You can either grumble about people “letting you down” or find a way to make the best of it and move on. The choice is yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Putting off making a commitment early in the week could be a good move. Best to act when you know you’re making an informed decision. Expect more facts to emerge by the week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent act of kindness on your part could take on special meaning this week. Also, look for signs of upcoming changes in both your personal and professional relationships. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Many of the tougher communication barriers between you and others in the workplace or at home could begin breaking down this week. Expect some surprises to emerge. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your “tough love” attitude toward someone you care for could be misunderstood. Try to be less judgmental and show more consideration in the way you relate to that person. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unexpected workplace challenge could be daunting. But take what you know (and you know more than you realize) and apply it to the problem, and you should see positive results. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Recent relationship changes for both single and paired Pisces continue to influence much of your week. Keep your focus on developing the positive aspects as you move along. BORN THIS WEEK: You set your goals with assurance and influence others to follow suit. You would be an excellent philosopher and teacher.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center.
