DIETING AND DINING OUT Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States.

2 FOR TUESDAY

Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course.

Buy 1 Rubbish Plate,

Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that won’t compromise their commitments to eating healthy. Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers get enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings. Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit. Dining out is incredibly popular, and dieters don’t have to avoid their favorite restaurants.

We have gone to [local store] in [local town] for years. They hire many new young cashiers there frequently. Most of the workers are polite and kind. A month ago, my husband and I were in line and there was a new young female cashier attending. Our sincere gratitude and thanks to those who offered their assistance at Eddie O’Brien’s restaurant in Canandaigua last Sunday. My husband suffered a sudden seizure and lost consciousness due to a recently diagnosed medical condition. We wish to thank the restaurant staff who quickly called 911 and the kind and caring patrons at the next table who offered their comfort and support. The Canandaigua Emergency Squad arrived quickly. They were wonderful; professional and caring while transporting him to the hospital. We deeply appreciate your help.

To the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday:” I read several objections to your comments. One said you should not say Merry Christmas as you may offend someone. Another said you are being insensitive and disrespectful. I applaud you for saying Merry Christmas. For those who wish to change the way we or the large percentage of people living in the U.S. acknowledge the spirit of the season, I say toughen up! Political correctness is insensitive to the majority of us Americans.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

‘Burning’ Tattoo Forces Halt to MRI ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you please explain how an MRI machine affects the pigment in a tattoo? My friend’s MRI procedure was stopped because she was experiencing a burning sensation at her lower eyelids, which had previously been tattooed with black ink. Does this happen only with black ink? Which colors are safer? -- J.H. ANSWER: Reactions between the ink in tattoos and MRI scanners are well-documented in the literature. Some inks -- mostly black, red and brown -- are made with iron or titanium oxides. Only 1.5 percent of people with tattoos have reported bad experiences in MRI machines. Iron and titanium oxides conduct electricity, and the strong magnetic field in an MRI scanner can cause a current to travel between different tattoos or different portions of a tattoo -especially those with loops in the pattern. The electric current causes heat, and even can cause minor burns. Cold packs or ice placed on the area during MRI can minimize damage, but some MRI facilities will not perform an MRI on tattooed individuals, especially if the tattoo covers a large area. If a magnet draws up the skin with a tattoo, then that area is at risk.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed with transient global amnesia. I had never heard of this. My primary care doctor sent me for further testing, which included an MRI and MRA with contrast, and a CT scan. All were normal. Can you elaborate on this condition? -- M.T.M. ANSWER: Transient global amnesia is a cause of retrograde amnesia (“retrograde” meaning you don’t remember things from the past, usually the past day to a month, but sometimes longer; “anterograde” means memory loss forward from the time of the event). Its cause is unknown, but it occurs more frequently in men and women over 50. Your doctor ordered the appropriate tests to make sure it wasn’t a transient ischemic attack or stroke. Epilepsy sometimes can look similar to TGA, so sometimes an EEG is obtained. As scary as it sounds, TGA usually doesn’t happen again and doesn’t predict a higher risk of developing memory troubles, stroke or epilepsy in the future.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has COPD. She is not coping very well. Her doctors are treating her with the standard medications. She has heard about an experimental treatment where they take her stem cells and make them into something that is inhaled. Have you heard about this treatment? Is it safe? Each treatment is $7,000. -- J.W. ANSWER: Stem cells are cells that can develop into many kinds of mature cells. In theory, they can grow and replace cells that have been damaged or destroyed due to a disease process. Stem cells hold great promise for many diseases, but there isn’t enough information for me to make a recommendation for stem cells in COPD, for either safety or effectiveness. If you are going to look into it further, I would recommend doing so only as part of a clinical trial. You can find out about clinical trials at www.clinicaltrials.gov. I was able to find some trials on the site that are recruiting subjects. I also would recommend www.closerlookatstemcells.org/ to anyone considering stem cell treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES (NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task. Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money. How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment. You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also:

• Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Professional relationships grow stronger. But you might still need to ease some problems with someone in your personal life. One way could be to try to be less rigid in your views. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might be too close to that perplexing personal situation to even attempt to make a rational decision about it right now. Stepping back could help you gain a wider perspective. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Being asked to choose between the positions of two friends is an unfair imposition on you. It’s best to reject the “demands” and insist they try harder to work things out on their own. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A change of mind about a workplace decision might be called for once you hear more arguments, pro and con. A personal event suddenly takes an unexpected (but pleasant!) turn. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance once again looms large for single Leos and Leonas, with Cupid favoring Taurus and Libra to inspire those warm and fuzzy Leonine feelings. Expect another workplace change. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A surprise gift -- and, happily, with no strings attached -- could come just when you need it to avoid a delay in getting your project done. Expect education to dominate the week. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone close to you might ask for your support as she or he faces a demanding personal challenge. Offer it, by all means. But be careful you don’t neglect your own needs at this time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected development could put your relationship with a partner or spouse to an emotionally demanding test. But your determination to get to the truth should save the day. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent agreement appears to be coming apart over the surfacing of unexpected complications. You might need to have expert advice on how to resolve the situation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your keen business sense helps you get to the truth about a suspicious business deal. Expect to have many colleagues rally to support your efforts in this important matter. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone who once moved in and out of your life through the years might now want to come back in on a more permanent basis. Give yourself a lot of time to weigh your decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Showing frustration over a delayed workplace decision might get someone’s attention, but not necessarily make him or her move any sooner. Best advice would be to be patient and wait it out. BORN THIS WEEK: You are drawn to excitement and enjoy fast-tempo music, with the more brass, the better.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

The Risks And Rewards Of Multilevel Marketing (NAPS)—Many retirees and others looking for extra income consider what’s known as multilevel marketing (MLM) or network marketing. It’s a type of direct selling where products are purchased from a company and sold through independent contractors. These contractors make commissions from what they sell, and from sales made by people they recruit. It doesn’t always work out the way they hope, however, according to a new survey from AARP Foundation, the affiliated charity of AARP. A few facts and hints may help: • Among the more than 20 million Americans who have participated in MLM organizations, 90 percent got involved to make money. • Nearly half lost money. • A quarter made no money. • Two-thirds would not join the same or another MLM organization again. • 39 percent stopped participating because it felt awkward to pitch to friends and family. • Four out of 10 say the company misled them about their chances for financial success. • MLM participants are primarily women with college degrees. • One-third were recruited by a friend and 12 percent by a family member. “We have witnessed many of our constituents joining these organizations, sometimes to their financial detriment. We want consumers to become better educated about MLMs before they invest valuable time and resources,” said Amy Nofziger, Program Director with AARP Foundation. To help, AARP Foundation suggests these four things: 1. Set your expectations and understand the costs. Recognize that MLMs require patience, persistence, and an investment of time and money. Make sure you’re clear on what you expect to get out of participating and what’s expected of you from the MLM. 2. Do your research. Thoroughly investigate the company. Visit the websites of the Better Business Bureau and Federal Trade Commission to see if there are any complaints about the company. Speak to current representatives and recent participants. Conduct an online search of the company name featuring keywords such as “work hours” and “incentives” to see what others are saying. 3. Get comfortable with selling. How do you feel about having business conversations with close friends and family? 4. Can you afford startup costs? Are you OK taking risks with your money? Farmers Give Back Project Prepares to Feed Families for Its 13th Year By Amanda Dudek well.” The project also looks beyond the numbers. “Most charities require people to show that they receive government assistance if they ask for help; we don’t,” Jodi explained. “Every person has needs for different reasons.” 2018 was their biggest year yet. “Last year and the year before, we reached 7 counties,” said Jodi. “This included donating to homeless shelters, food pantries, churches who do food kitchens, Friends Feeding Friends out of Buffalo and vans that travel to homeless encampments.” Beau Teed Farm hasn’t forgotten its neighbors either. “We try to find people to give to in Livingston County, too,” Jodi said. “We are very proud to have helped 32 families last year.” Jodi & Steven St n Teed with produce duce for f the Farmers Fa Give Back Project. J

odi Teed of Beau Teed Farm has given us yet another reason to thank local farmers. In 2006, Jodi Teed began what has become the Farmers Give Back Project. For the past 12 years, Jodi and Beau Teed Farm have provided produce and meat products to area food pantries as well as directly to families in need. “My husband and I bought this farm 20 years ago,” said Jodi. Jodi’s family has a strong background in farming, and her husband had worked on a neighboring farm throughout high school. “We started growing and raising our own food, and when we had extra, we would donate it to places like the Open Door Mission in Rochester and the Honeoye Food Pantry. We just kept adding places!” Jodi explained that giving really opened her eyes to an ongoing need. “Places like food pantries have needs I didn’t expect,” Jodi shared. “For example, it is right after Thanksgiving that many food pantries are hit hardest. Also, food pantries do not often receive fresh food,” she added. “A lot of the donated foods are canned.” This realization led Jodi and her husband, Steven, to redouble their efforts. “We started donating more and more,” Jodi said, enthusiastically. “After we would pick and sort food, selling Grade A produce to stores and restaurants, we always had plenty of good produce left over.” Beau Teed Farm began donating chickens, turkeys at Thanksgiving and loads of produce. Things really took off when the idea caught on with other area farmers. “I remember it was Giving Tuesday,” said Jodi, referring to the philanthropy-focused Tuesday following Thanksgiving. “We had received a message through Facebook which featured Bill Gates asking, ‘What can you do to make a difference?’ That really resonated with me.” Jodi said she immediately called up a farmer friend in Elba and explained how her Farmers Give Back Project works. They were eager to participate. “We sent a truck over there, and they filled it up!” exclaimed Jodi. Jodi recalled another generous farm, DeGroff ’s of Castile, which offered them squash. When they arrived, they found 80 bushels of it. “By that Saturday, I had all kinds of vegetables from all over Western New York,” added Jodi. The Project only continued to grow from there. “We donate all kinds of fresh food from our farm,” said Jodi. “Including fresh veggies like potatoes that last well in cold storage. The Monks of the Abbey of the Genesee donated 600 loaves of bread,” Jodi continued. “Marquart Farm brought us several pallets containing over 1,000 bags of family size potato chips. Star Growers, owned by long-time friends, the Starowitz family, donated, and we received apples from two farms. Another farm, owned by the Casper family, donated beef.”

Area farmers have also stepped up generously. “Last year, we had people throughout 7 counties contributing just because we made phone calls asking for help,” Jodi stated gratefully. “DeGroff donated over 100 bushels of produce last year. Monks Bread works with us, and they are awesome,” Jodi continued. “They always help us with charity bread whenever there is a need. In addition, Casper’s Farm donated several boxes of packaged hamburger to us.” Jodi said there are so many additional farms and friends who have donated and participated, and while they cannot name them all, they are so grateful for people’s outstanding generosity.

We are making a difference!

“We provide a great opportunity to learn about growing healthy produce,” added Jodi, passionate about food-related education. “We - Jodi Teed also help families learn how to cook it. We now include recipe cards in our food packages, especially for things like cabbage,” Jodi said. “We even put together a small recipe book this past year.”

“Our biggest need this year is volunteers,” shared Jodi. “My husband works, and I have physical limitations. We really need more help.” This year, Jodi hopes the Farmers Give Back Project will grow even more. “We are looking for people to help with planting, weeding, picking, gardening, tractor maintenance and food delivery,” Jodi explained. “We need weekly and biweekly help throughout the growing season. The hours are extremely flexible. We have seeds that have already been donated to get us going this year. We are making a difference, and we would like 2019 to be our biggest year yet.” For more information on the Farmers Give Back Project, please call Jodi Lyn Beaumont Teed at (585) 313-3219. A LASTING TRIBUTE TO AMERICAN SOLDIERS (NAPSI)—More than 30 million Americans have served in the United States Army. If you or someone you care about is among them, you can now order a personalized, commemorative brick that will be permanently placed along the pathway to the future National Museum of the United States Army. Making a Museum The National Army Museum is rapidly taking shape at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. This national landmark will be the first museum to tell the entire history of the nation’s oldest and largest military service. The massive 185,000-square-foot building will display a collection of Army artifacts, historic documents, and Soldier artwork. The vast majority of these priceless selections have never been seen by the public. “For those who served, the Museum will provide a place of reflection,” said retired Army Chief of Staff, General Gordon R. Sullivan, chairman of the Army Historical Foundation. “For the rest of America, it will be an educational institution that conveys American history through the eyes and stories of Soldiers, teaching our nation how the U.S. Army has shaped nearly every major event in our country’s history.” In the two years since groundbreaking, the building’s frame has been completed, and crews have installed the stainless-steel panels that make up its exterior. Inside, the circular walls of the 300-degree Army Theater are set, and four of the Museum’s largest artifacts are in place. How You Can Be a Part of It The U.S. Army designated the nonprofit Army Historical Foundation to lead the campaign to build the Museum. The Foundation developed the Commemorative Brick Program to raise funds for construction and offer serving Soldiers and Army veterans and their families a way to forever be part of the historic national landmark. The personalized bricks are currently being installed along the pathway leading to the Museum’s main entrance. Made of Mesabi Black granite, the impressive tributes will set the stage for the Museum experience. Individuals and organizations can still order bricks at www.armyhistory. org/bricks.

Alzheimer’s Association Helpline Offers Counsel and Comfort By Dina Johnson, Director of Care and Support, and Seth Trego, Senior Care Coordinator

Our free, 24/7 helpline is one of the most invaluable services we provide to individuals living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, caregivers, health care professionals and the public. In addition to offering information and referrals, the helpline features confidential care consultations by master’s level clinicians who offer families affected by Alzheimer’s or another dementia decision-making support, crisis assistance and education. Often, we get phone calls from family members who worry about the decline in their loved one’s memory, thinking and reasoning abilities. For some time, Ralph Olney of Spencerport had been noticing that his wife Beverly would frequently misplace things, have difficulty finding words and become anxious. He wondered, “Could Bev have dementia? What kind of symptoms should I be looking for?” A neighbor suggested that Ralph call the Alzheimer’s Association. “When I called the 800 number, a care consultant reviewed with me the 10 warning signs of dementia that are not part of normal aging and I recognized that Bev was exhibiting most of those symptoms.” At the recommendation of our care consultant, Ralph scheduled an appointment with a neurologist who diagnosed Beverly with Alzheimer’s dementia. “I felt better once I knew what we were dealing with. Having an early diagnosis allowed us to plan ahead and make Bev part of our decision-making process about her future,” Ralph said. Last year, Ralph called our helpline several times. After discussing care options for Beverly, our care consultant encouraged Ralph to proceed with legal and financial planning. The couple then attended an eight-week early-stage orientation series for individuals with dementia and care partners where they learned about what to expect as Beverly’s disease progresses and where to find support. “We knew that, eventually, Bev would no longer be able to express her wishes clearly. So, we decided to meet with both of our children and share with them our long-term care plans,” said Ralph. The helpline also regularly gets phone calls from family members after their loved ones have fallen or after they have wandered away from their home. We advise caregivers

on how to create a safe environment at home. We also share with them strategies and services to prevent wandering. Sometimes, family members call our helpline because they feel stressed and overwhelmed and are looking to connect with a person who can understand and empathize with them. We have resources to help caregivers manage their stress and avoid burnout. We assist in creating a support network that allows caregivers to take care of their own well-being. We also invite them to join our caregiver support groups and offer respite care scholarships or referrals to other respite programs. Lois Rollins of Rochester frequently calls the helpline to talk about the resources available in the community for her mother Malease Rollins who lives with Alzheimer’s dementia. Last year, Lois was awarded a respite scholarship, which helped her offset some of the costs of caregiving. “Before my mom lost her mobility, I was able to use the scholarship toward an adult daycare provided by Marian’s House. My mom loved spending time there while I was running errands. Now my mom requires around-the-clock care and I will use the respite scholarship to pay for at-home aides,” Lois said. One out of ten calls to our helpline comes from individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Some of these people may have recently been diagnosed and want to understand more about the disease. Others may have difficulty accepting the diagnosis. We help these individuals manage the emotional impact of receiving the diagnosis. We offer tips on how to share their diagnosis with their loved ones. We also invite them to participate in our programs designed for people with early-stage dementia. If you or your loved one are concerned about memory loss, have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, or care for someone with the disease, call 1-800-272-3900. Our highly trained staff will answer your call 24 hours a day, seven days a week and you will receive help in your preferred language, using our translation service that features more than 200 languages and dialects.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can help people combat stress for several hours afterward.
