Livonia Third-Graders Make a Difference in the Lives of Homeless Animals Go Figure!

During the month of December, four third-graders put their passion for homeless animals and their plight to find their “fur-ever” homes to work by creating a campaign in conjunction with Livonia Central School to raise awareness of and bring in donations for Susie Q Dog ResQ and Hearthside Cats. Ultimately, they wanted to give pets a good Christmas even if they didn’t have homes. Sophie Beikirch, Gabby Peri, Aubrey Rivera and Molly Rowe researched several areas to donate to before coming up with Susie Q Dog ResQ and Hearthside Cats and then looked at the organizations’ websites to see what supplies the groups needed. After brainstorming their idea, they presented their plan to Principal Whittle who ultimately approved their idea. With the support of third-grade teacher Mrs. Willow Johnston, the girls worked hard on creating signs and making announcements to fellow students in the elementary school. Parents helped by posting the details of the drive on social media sites. Bins were put out in the school to accept donations of dog and cat food, cat litter, toys, blankets and towels, leashes and halters. They were able

Sophie Beikirch, Aubrey Rivera, Gabby Peri & Molly Rowe

to collect enough donations to fill the backs of two vehicles! Of course, without the support of their fellow students, teachers, administration and parents this would not have been possible. It was a true display of the meaning of small community support. The girls want everyone to know they can make a difference, too, by donating to these groups or even by adopting one of the many pets that are ready for adoption. For more information, visit their websites http://www.hearthsidecats.org/ http://www.susieqdogresq.com/

Prevent stairway injuries Stairs are a necessity in many homes. While stairs serve a practical purpose, they also have the potential to be dangerous. According to the National Safety Council, more than one million injuries result each year from stairway falls. Staircase and stairway accidents constitute the second leading cause of accidental injury, second only to motor vehicle accidents. Each year, there are 12,000 stairway accident deaths. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation states that a large portion of Canadians who visit hospitals after a fall on or from stairs or steps in their homes are seniors (men and women age 65 years or older). However, many stairway falls can be prevented with some simple planning. · Install sturdy handrails. A common contributor to stairway falls is a failure to use handrails. Sturdy handrails can decrease fall rates. Even if a person slips, he or she may be able to prevent the fall by grabbing on to the handrails and regaining some of his or her balance. · Rely on highlighters or friction strips. According to a study titled, “Safety on stairs: Influence of a tread edge highlighter and its position,” by Richard J. Foster, fall risk may be reduced by using a highlighter positioned flush with the tread edge. This helps make stairs more visible, particularly for those with impaired vision. · Improve lighting on staircases. Failure to see steps may contribute to falls as well. Staircases should be well lit so that residents and guests know where to step. Subtle

foot-level lighting can be installed to make it easier for people who frequently use steps at night. · Use slip-resistant materials. Slip-resistant surface material acceptable for normal floors should work on stair treads. Loose rugs should not be placed at the top or bottom of the landing. Outdoors, rough finishes are recommended, particularly on stairs that are subject to getting wet. · Improve step geometry. If slips and falls frequently occur on a particular staircase, consider the relationship between the rise and the run, advises the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. The National Building Code of Canada says that, within a staircase, treads should have a uniform run and tread depth that does not vary more than 0.5 to 1 cm. Steep steps with high risers and/or short treads can increase the risk of falls. · Clear away clutter. One easy way to prevent falls is to keep stairs free of clutter. This means removing shoes, toys and other belongings that may be left on stairs or landings. Many falls on stairs can be prevented by being mindful of certain risk factors.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 76-year-old woman with diabetes. My body, as I have been told, is bad with arthritis, for which I have been prescribed Celebrex. I have been taking it for a few months now, and am definitely moving around with a lot less pain. I recently watched a program that devoted the entire hour to Celebrex. It scared me out of my wits upon hearing the side effects of the medicine. I am asking your advice about whether to stop taking the Celebrex. -- S.A. ANSWER: All medicines have risks, and in order to decide whether you should keep taking the medicine, you need to really understand what the risks are and balance them against the benefits you feel in your ability to move around more easily. In the case of Celebrex, we have a pretty good idea of what the risks are. Like all related drugs (including ibuprofen and naproxen), celecoxib (Celebrex) can damage the kidneys, so it isn’t recommended for people with kidney disease. There also can be allergic reactions, which may be related to allergies to sulfa drugs. A few people have had vision changes. However, the most concerning risk is heart disease -- both heart attacks and heart failure. These risks definitely are increased among users of celecoxib. However, the absolute risk is small: There were about two extra cases of all heart events, including heart attack and heart failure, per thousand people taking 400 mg once daily, and six extra events in people taking 400 mg twice daily. Those risks probably are higher if you are at increased risk for heart disease (which you probably are, because of your diabetes), but it still means less than 1 percent of people per year. If the medicine isn’t helping, the risk certainly isn’t worth it. However, only you can decide if the risk is worth the benefit. Drug companies get into big trouble when they try to hide the risks of their medications, and honesty demands that we admit that all drugs and supplements have risks. Only you can make that decision, but I think it’s up to us as doctors to have a frank discussion, especially about medications intended to be taken long-term. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 72-year-old female. My doctor told me four years ago that I would need a Pap test only every two years, which I have done. She told me recently that I would not need to have any more. My tests have always been negative. I am concerned, as I would rather be proactive and know early if I had cancer. What is your opinion, and what does the American Cancer Society say? -- B.L.S. ANSWER: All of the leading organizations, including the American Cancer Society, have recommended stopping screening at age 65 for women with no history of cancer and who have had adequate screening, meaning three negative Pap smears (or two negative combination Pap and HPV tests) in the past 10 years, with at least one in the past five years. The risk for cancer in this specific group is very low. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. 6 Fresh New Ways To Enjoy Potatoes (BPT) - Potatoes are the vegetable that take breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to the next level of yum. They are quick to disappear but also quick and easy to buy, prepare and serve. Not only are potatoes uber satisfying, but research published in the Journal of American College of Nutrition also shows that when prepared healthfully, they can be a part of a weight loss program-just call them the 9th Wonder of the World. If you’re looking for flavorful and nutritious dishes that can be part of your weight management plan, then look no further. Here’s a little inspiration for potato dishes sure to become favorites: DIY potato chips: This is a super easy and delicious recipe. Boil a russet potato and a few purple potatoes for 5 minutes, drain, dry and cut into thin slices. Toss the freshly cut slices in one beaten egg white. Spray a non-stick pan with cooking spray and evenly space the chips throughout the pan. Bake slices at 400ºF for 35 minutes, turning halfway through. Top chips with sea salt. Season with new flavor favorites: Spice up your baked or roasted potatoes with healthy toppings that really raise the bar on nutrition and flavor. Start with a plain, thick and creamy yogurt and a good source of protein. If you’re serious about spice, try adding a tablespoon of Sriracha and orange juice to a halfcup of your yogurt, mix, and add a dollop to your potatoes. Love a Mediterranean flair? Top your taters with Greek yogurt mixed with lemon, garlic, roasted red peppers and oregano. Wholesome mashed potatoes: Mash your potatoes with a low-fat spread, Greek yogurt or skim milk for that creamy, delicious texture you love, without all the calories. Slim-belly baked potato bar: Families will love a baked potato bar. Top a baked potato with ground turkey, salsa and light sour cream for taco night, or top your potatoes with tomato sauce, turkey pepperoni, Italian blend shredded cheese and other veggies for a pizza-style delight. One medium-sized skin-on potato has just 110 calories and contains 45 percent of your daily value of vitamin C. On its own, a potato contains no fat, no sodium, no cholesterol and has more potassium than a banana. Healthy eating is so much better with foods you love and new ways to enjoy them. SCRAPBOOKS CAN HELP DOCUM ENT YOUR YEAR M any interesting and special events take place during the course of a typical year. W hile the trend is to share photos and anecdotes via social media, these memories tend to be forgotten soon after they are posted. Rather than relegate birthdays, holidays, school milestones, and other such yearly events to the black hole of cyberspace, crafty men, w omen and children may w ant to display them in more prominent w ays. Scrapbooking is a popular hobby that can help people document various events over the course of the year. But scrapbooking can be much more than that as w ell. Scrapbooks can serve as valuable resources that speak to the w ay life once w as. Such traditions are not new. Books highlighting family memorabilia, such as recipes, poems, letters, and illustrations, w ere popular in England as early as the 15th century. Even school yearbooks are a type of scrapbook, highlighting students and events in a single convenient book. The reasons for scrapbooking are the same today as they once w ere. Scrapbooks preserve memories, record family stories and pass dow n information through generations. Scrapbooks can even be customized in any manner their creators desire. For those w ho have resolved to devote more time to documenting happy times and special events in the year ahead, scrapbooking is a great w ay to do just that.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Jan. 17, 1893, on the Hawaiian Islands, American sugar planters under Sanford Ballard Dole overthrow the Hawaiian monarch and establish a new provincial government with Dole as president. The coup occurred with the knowledge of the U.S. minister to Hawaii, and 300 U.S. Marines were called, allegedly to protect American lives.

A big Thank You to Gretchen, Tammy and all the other amazing moms who put on the annual Gift away at the Brockport Elks Lodge! Because of you, hundreds of children will have gifts for the holidays. A special thanks to everyone who donated! I want to thank the people who volunteer their time and resources for the many needed activities in our communities. Also, those who work diligently to cover end of the year vacations in any business, seasonal staff who often work long and sometimes thankless hours, and our emergency and road crews who work through the night to keep us safe, a big THANK YOU! For at least 20 years I have avoided going to the dentist because of fear. Needless to say I needed a lot of dental work done. I was having a lot of pain, and that’s when I found White

Spruce Dental. They were professional and caring, but most of all they did not criticize me for neglecting my teeth. I am no longer afraid of going to the dentist, which is huge for me! Dr. Nozik and his entire staff are wonderful. I would like to say a special thank you to Lisa and Zeypeh. I recommend this office all the time and will continue to do so. Suzanne

This year, I was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. I have encountered many wonderful service providers along this journey that have been so kind to me during this time. From receptionists, doctors, customer service people at my insurance company, to my hair stylist who helped me cut my hair since it was falling out. I have been treated better than I ever have in my life. While I really appreciate people’s caring nature and friendly ways, I challenge this mindset at the same time. I shouldn’t be treated any differently because I have a disease. We are all fighting a battle of some sort in our lives. Your battle may not be my battle, but it’s important whatever it may be. Being kind to others is a selfish act for me since my diagnosis. I challenge you to see if you feel the same.

about abuse of animals by psycho killers who progress to committing these crimes on humans.

How long does it take to repair the bridges? This work has been going on for months and still isn’t totally completed yet. It seems that there is a mini crew taking their time on this job. Traffic is backed up due to lane closures all along this route and sometimes no work is even taking place at all. It sure seems like this small crew of workers is taking their sweet time with little regard to the motorists trying to get to work or home after work. Everyone knows we can avoid offensive sites, but there is one thing I don’t understand. A site I used to enjoy has so many beautiful photos of flowers and my greatest love, animals. I was browsing baby animals and the most gruesome photos were included in this pin. It only took one to get me weeping and turning off my computer, although there were many more. Cruelty is not normal. We all know

To the person who vented in the last Penny Saver about having to spend $0.02 for an envelope and $0.46 for a stamp to pay your High School tax: If you are leaving NYS because of $0.48 it sounds like you have a first world problem. Also it seems that you are paying all of your bills with checks since you emphasized that you didn’t get a return envelope as you do with your other bills. Welcome to 2016 where we have this thing called the internet. You’re squawking about paying $0.48 and threatening about being the next one to leave NYS... Feel free to leave. Trust me... the money you pay for your high school taxes and $0.48 to pay the bill to send in your archaic check won’t be missed. Ciao! Can the village and water / sewer please fix the manhole covers? The last paving by the village added too much material without having the manholes covers raised. My car will be out of alignment or someone will swerve and hit oncoming traffic.

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.
