PAW’S CORNER

Employment

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last month, I agreed to pet sit for a friend while she and her boyfriend went on vacation. I did this for free because I love pets and want to see if pet sitting as a business is right for me. Bitsy, her 3-year-old cat, was a joy to care for ... the first week. On Monday of the second week, I came to take care of her and Bitsy was laying in the middle of the floor, lethargic. I scooped her up and took her straight to the veterinarian, who thinks she either ingested a toxic houseplant or spoiled food. After fluids and rest at the vet, Bitsy is doing much better. But my friend is angry with me because the vet’s bill is very high. She says it’s my fault that Bitsy got into her houseplant. I followed my friend’s instructions to the letter. Why is it my fault? What should I do? Sign me -- Confused in Denver

Pet Sitting Goes Awry

DEAR CONFUSED: I’m glad Bitsy is doing better. You did the right thing by taking her in for medical care. My advice is to give your friend a little time to process everything that happened. You’ve explained your side already. Hopefully with a little breathing space she will be able to think more clearly and then the two of you can talk and decide what to do. When you open your pet sitting business, take this as a lesson learned. Spell out terms very clearly, stating that the pet owner is responsible for any vet bills incurred due to illness or injury. You can learn much more through groups like Pet Sitter International (https://www. petsit.com/) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (https://petsitters.org/). NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Three ways to use an empty tissue box: 1) Store plastic grocery bags inside; 2) line with a small plastic trash bag and use in your car as a travel trash can; 3) cut out the bottom and use it to disguise an extra toilet tissue roll in your guest bath! * Love oranges? Save the peels to add to your potpourri mix. Remove as much of the pith as possible and cut into strips. Air dry in bright light for about a week. Or you can set the strips on parchment and dry in a partially closed oven set to 175 F for about 45 minutes. Check often. * “To separate yolks from egg whites, simply crack eggs into a shallow bowl and ‘suck’ the yolk out using an empty plastic water bottle. Squeeze the bottle slightly, then position the mouth of the bottle at the yolk and let go. It will magically slide up into the bottle, leaving the whites behind!” -- T.T. in New York

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

It’s Time to Review, Renew Medicare This is that time of year, again, when we need to make decisions about Medicare plans. From Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, we are eligible to compare our coverage between the original Medicare, Advantage plans and the Part D drug plans in open enrollment. They change every year, and we need to know how those changes will impact us. To compare plans, go online to Medicare.gov and click on Preview 2022 Health & Drug Plans. Click on the plans you’d like to see and enter your ZIP code. If you want to compare drug costs, enter that data as well. Have pen and paper on hand and do the math. While it’s said that the average Advantage plan will come down $2, the average drug plan will go up that much. Beware the deductibles. If you have an Advantage plan and think you want to continue it, read the fine print. If you’re used to having benefits for glasses, gym membership or other things, check to be sure you’ll still have those. Compare all of the plans to get what you need. If you have a Part D drug plan and need insulin, be especially careful in selecting your plan. An additional 500 plans will include insulin this year, but again, read the fine print to be sure it’s what you need. A warning: Be sure your drugs are covered. If you have questions you can call 1-800-MEDICARE, 24/7, to get help. You can also seek assistance at the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) for your state (www.shiphelp.org). If you are low income or have a disability, you might be eligible for the Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs). They help pay for premiums and deductibles, as well as co-payments. Go online to cms.gov and search for Medicare Savings Programs. Click on one of the four categories for more information and income limits. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Ready to Give this Thanksgiving an “F?” Give It 7 of Them Instead! BY AMANDA K. DUDEK

I

t is an understatement to say this has been quite the year: unpredictable, economically challenging, and even frightening at times. Continued political division and societal conflict over controversial issues have done little to ease the heightened stress many of us have experienced for many months. But before expecting to give a failing grade to this Thanksgiving holiday, consider these 7 blessings almost all of us have in common…even in 2021!

Food – One of the first things that leaps to mind when Thanksgiving is mentioned is food: the abundant, mouthwatering goodies often rooted in family recipes. Traditional foods are front and center: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, squash, green beans, cranberry sauce, and of course, pumpkin pie. These foods are part of the Finger Lakes heritage, as well, particularly if you use cornbread stuffing. Corn, beans, and squash are the Three Sisters of the Iroquois whose confederacy included this region. Whether your Thanksgiving includes these classic foods or other favorite family dishes, breaking bread together with the whole family is undeniably one of the best things about this holiday. Faith – The Pilgrims, who celebrated the first Thanksgiving alongside Native Americans, came to North America for many reasons, one of which was to worship God freely. Thanksgiving has come to represent a celebration of faith and the freedom we have to enjoy it. As a multicultural melting pot, the United States welcomes people of all beliefs, religions, and creeds. For many, the right to honor one’s deeply-held beliefs is definitely a reason to give thanks.

Football – It’s a familiar sight: Americans watching football (#JoshAllenForTheWin), cheering for their preferred team on Thanksgiving afternoon, munching finger foods and shouting at the television as the smells of the upcoming holiday feast waft their way through the house. A spirit of healthy competition and athleticism prevails, and if your family is anything like mine, sides are quickly chosen, heightening the excitement. Why do we do it? It’s tradition. Besides, if you love football, any day is a good day for a game! Freedom – Although the Pilgrims’ arrival in North America generates mixed feelings, many acknowledge that these settlers were seeking greater freedom: a value many Americans still hold dear today. Little could they have imagined that more than 100 years later, the United States, arguably one of the freest nations in the world, would be birthed on these very shores. The price of such freedom is the division caused by a kaleidoscope of opinions, but are we truly more divided than ever before? While our disagreements may be more visible thanks to information technology and social media, we have yet to take up arms against each other to the tune of 750,000 lives, the number of Civil War casualties estimated in a 2012 New York Times article. Many of us see room for improvement, of course, and we have the freedom to voice our concerns and unite for change. Some sadly resort to violence, but the fact that most of us, as unique people with inherently different points-of-view, continue to seek change peacefully is certainly something to be grateful for. Forgiveness – Tempers have flared all too often during last year’s election and throughout the pandemic with emotions running high. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to extend forgiveness to those you love. Gathering together for a sumptuous meal, giving thanks over shared traditions, reliving good memories while making new ones, and taking time out of our busy lives to reconnect with family are all wonderful reasons to extend the olive branch, whether it’s across the aisle or across the table. Family – If you’re thinking we saved the best for last, you’re right! Food, faith, the Finger Lakes, football, freedom and even forgiveness are best enjoyed with those you love: your family. There are still concerns over gathering, so we’ve found unconventional ways to connect with family this Thanksgiving. Consider inviting family members who cannot attend to participate in family traditions virtually. Don’t forget to reach out to elderly family members who have typically been the most isolated throughout this pandemic. Looking for a little interactive Thanksgiving fun? Try a word cloud generator like the one offered by Poll Everywhere. After posting a question like, “What are three things you are most thankful for this Thanksgiving?” Invite your family members to respond. Poll Everywhere will create a beautiful word cloud with their responses. The largest words will be those mentioned most often, resulting in an eye-catching mosaic highlighting your family values. Have a favorite Thanksgiving tradition or gratitude item we missed? Send it to us at hometown@gvpennysaver.com. We would love to share your thankful thoughts as Raves for our readers to enjoy!

Finger Lakes – It goes by many names: the Finger Lakes Region, Central & Western NY, the Devil’s Freezer…okay, I kind of made up that last one! Still, we undoubtedly live in one of the most beautiful and lush parts of the country. It beckons with rolling green hills, temperate valleys, several clear lakes, and rich agricultural areas which include apple orchards, a wide variety of stone fruits, and one of the best viticulture areas in the world. While it’s true our winters can be cold, our spring and autumn seasons are colorful masterpieces, and our summers are warm, sunny, and best enjoyed lakeside. As the blazing hues of autumn frame bountiful fields ready for harvest, it is easy to see why living in the Finger Lakes so often finds a place on our gratitude lists.

HOMETOWN

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

You’re Never Too Old for HPV Infection ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your recent column stating that the HPV vaccine is recommended up to age 45. Are people older than 45 years no longer susceptible to HPV? Asking for a 52-yearold friend (who thinks he’s Wolverine). -- C.F. ANSWER: The comic character Wolverine has a mutant healing ability (that’s how he was able to survive having his bones replaced with adamantium), so he has nothing to worry about. However, non-mutants do have to worry about HPV, which can come from any kind of skin-toskin contact with a person who has HPV. Having the virus often means having warts, but sometimes people can have contagious HPV without having any visible lesion. It’s been estimated that 90% of people with HPV don’t know they have it. People of any age are susceptible to HPV. Most people have been exposed by age 45, which is why the recommendations are the way they are now, but vaccination might make sense in some situations. The clearest example is someone who has had very few sexual partners and is about to become more sexually active (for example, a person recently divorced or widowed). Although the vaccine is not indicated by the Food and Drug Administration in this situation and the person is likely going to have to pay out of pocket, it might still be worth it to get the vaccine to reduce the risk of acquiring a new sexually transmitted HPV infection. I received several letters from people who acquired new genital warts in just this situation who were upset that their doctor did not offer the vaccine. If people have already been exposed to HPV, the vaccine will not harm them. In fact, there is some anecdotal evidence that the vaccine might help people with difficult-to-treat warts by boosting the immune system specifically for HPV. 1. Fall sunset over Farmington 2. Congratulations on a job well done!

GIVING A BRAND NEW TWIST TO

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS BY KAITLIN DONNAN

Move over Chip and Joanna Gaines! There’s a new girl in town. Western New York's Ashley Huber is putting her own twists on typical holiday decorating traditions. Featuring a mix of DIY and personal flair, her social media is bursting with her inspiring holiday style. We sat down with Ashley for some insight on how she goes about her process just in time for the season!

How would you describe your holiday décor?

Definitely similar to my every day which is cozy, inviting, and warm! I love all things vintage, so I like to play with that in my Christmas décor, as well. My holiday is like every other day, and I like my guests to feel welcome as soon as they walk in the door.

Does it change year-to-year?

Yes and no. Every year, I try to add some new elements, and in the past, I’ve tried out a few different themes. For the most part, I find myself coming back to a classic cottage style Christmas. I start out using a neutral palette and go from there, but I always bring in touches of traditional red and fresh greenery.

When do you start decorating?

Before, I would wait until after Thanksgiving, but as of late, I’ve been starting in mid-November. I like Christmas to feel like more than a one-month season, and we’ve really enjoyed the cozy lights during our turkey dinner! Every year, I start with the tree in our living room, since it sets the tone for the season and gives me a direction for the way I want to decorate the rest of the house.

Is there any part of decorating that has any special meaning to you, or do you have any traditions?

In the other rooms, I’ll put up smaller trees so that there’s one in each window. On one of those trees, I have a collection of angel ornaments that I always use. Those are really special to me because my mom has given me a new one each year since I was five years old. That tradition is one I look forward to every year!

Do you get the family involved?

Yes! My husband loves Christmas time as well, and it is always helpful with the decorating. He focuses on some of our outdoor décor while I work on the inside, but we always decorate the tree together. It’s our holiday tradition.

Do you have anything you would consider your favorite part of decorating? The nostalgia of some of the vintage pieces I use always make me happy, and I love the feeling of creating a cozy space. Your home is your haven, and it should always feel good to be there.

Where are we headed? It is being said that sales in some industries are the lowest that they have been since the Great Recession. The price of gas continues to climb; industries continue to suffer from a lack of workers and a shortage of supplies; the national debt continues to mount, and inflation continues to rise. Cargo ships sit off the US coast, unable to unload their goods. Every day you see the shelves in the stores get barer with no relief in site. I am reminded of stories told by my grandparents of the Great Depression, when you were given ration coupons for food due to its scarcity. How long before we have to ration our food?

Magic Maze MAKERS OF FINE CHINA

Majestic Christmas trees garner the lion’s share of the decorative fanfare when the holidays arrive. Trees may be the focal points of holiday decor, but the humble wreath adorning the front door is the first decoration guests are likely to see when visiting a home. Wreaths may need some care to maintain their beauty all month long. Here are some tips to help holiday wreaths last as long as possible. Choose a wreath wisely

When shopping for a wreath, choose freshly cut greenery that you assemble yourself; otherwise, look for wreaths made from freshly cut boughs with their foliage intact. Make sure not too many needles or leaves are falling off. Heavily decorated, preassembled wreaths may be convenient, but ornaments can make it challenging to give the wreath the moisture it needs to survive.

Moistur e / water

Access to moisture will help to keep the wreath fresh. While a Christmas tree trunk may sit inside of a stand filled with water, wreaths require a little ingenuity. According to the wreath and garland retailer Club Botanic, if you will not be hanging a freshly purchased wreath right away, keep it in a plastic liner in a cool, dark place to help it retain moisture. Just make sure you don’t seal that liner closed. Before hanging, lay the wreath in a couple of inches of water for about an hour or up to a day so that the cut stems can soak up water. Once the wreath is hanging on a door or elsewhere, spritz it with water every few days to prevent it from drying out.

Locatio n, location, location

Where you hang the wreath is key to its longevity. Wreaths and garlands hung indoors likely won’t last as long as those hung outside, advises the floral retailer Bouqs.com. Evergreen boughs tend to require a colder climate to thrive, and indoor heat can prematurely zap moisture from the wreath. Using a humidifier indoors or misting the wreath may help.

It’s probably best to hang fresh wreaths outdoors, but avoid direct sunlight, which can dry out the greenery. Slightly shaded spots are best. If your front door is bathed in full sun for hours, hang an artificial wreath here instead of a fresh one.
