Get support or talk it out. Speaking about what you are going through and getting reassurance from other people can work wonders to strengthen resilience. When the desire to quit sneaks up, you can consult with a friend or consider a support group. For example, taking a group class at the gym may be a more effective motivational tool than working out solo.

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING DID YOU KNOW? Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had an abdominal X-ray to check on my gallstones, and was surprised to find an enlarged spleen. I was told it might be leukemia or lymphoma! I was sent to an oncologist, who reassured me that I did not have cancer and recommended I get checked again in six months. My doctor checked it after three, and my spleen had gone back down! What is all this with the spleen? People have it removed after injuries, like accidents. It seems to be insignificant, but can it be an omen for cancer? -- M.K. ANSWER: The spleen is an underappreciated abdominal organ. Its major job is to filter and remove old or damaged red blood cells, but it also removes bacteria. In addition, the spleen acts as a very large lymph node, allowing infection-fighting white blood cells to gather and activate. Removal of the spleen leaves people at a higher risk of some kinds of bacterial infections. Enlargement of the spleen has many potential causes. Both liver and heart disease can cause passive congestion of the spleen with blood. Cancer, especially lymphoma, is a common cause, but infection is one cause to consider in a person in whom the spleen enlarges and then returns to normal. There are many less-common causes as well. If the spleen is removed or is nonfunctional (this is almost universal in adults with sickle cell disease, for example), then infections are common, and vaccinations have a different and more intensive schedule, ideally given when the spleen is still in place and working. It is probably worth it for your doctor to continue to keep an eye on.
Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.

Honeoye Falls-Lima Mendon Kiwanis Offers Kentucky Families a Helping Hand BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
n a time when new virus strains and new vaccines are a constant focus, it is sometimes easy to unintentionally overlook the many benevolent organizations which have been serving our communities for a long time. One such organization, Kiwanis, has been meeting the needs of others for over 100 years. Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1915, Kiwanis now boasts more than 550,000 members in 80 countries and geographic areas worldwide and hosts nearly 150,000 service projects each year. One of its local chapters, the Honeoye Falls-Lima/Mendon Kiwanis Club, recently took part in a statewide initiative to help Kentucky families impacted by devastating tornados. The Honeoye Falls-Lima/Mendon Kiwanis Club (HFLM Kiwanis), a recent addition to the Kiwanis Club family, is no stranger to crisis, having been chartered in August of 2020. True to Kiwanis’ mission to “serve the children of the world,” HFLM Kiwanis teamed up with other local Kiwanis Clubs over the holidays to support a local boy with Spina Bifida by giving him a special bike adjusted to his disabilities so that he could continue to enjoy the pastime he loves. “Our motto is ‘Changing the world one child and one community at a time,’” explained Vice President Pastor Christine Mitchell, whose mother, Peg Bobzin, is the chapter’s current president. “That is what we focus on: children. It is what makes us different from other organizations.” Mitchell explained that Kiwanis maintains service leadership programs for children from elementary school through college and beyond: K-Kids for elementary students, Builders Club for middle and junior high school students, Key Club for high school students, Circle K for college students, and Aktion Club for adults with disabilities. “We are trying to teach children and others how to give back to their communities,” said Mitchell. “We participate in projects such as raising money for the Golisano Children’s Hospital, and we continue to help our communities, as well.”
When HFLM Kiwanis was asked to join in collecting necessary items for families impacted by Kentucky tornadoes, there was only one possible answer. “We received a call from the governor of The New York District of Kiwanis International Clubs,” Mitchell Kiwanis Finger Lakes Division Lt. Governor recalled. “All of the Deborah Rought (l) and NY District Lyme Kiwanis districts in Disease Brittany Award Recipient Pastor New York were called upon to help Christine Mitchell (r), Vice President of in Honeoye Falls-Lima, Mendon Kiwanis Club. families Kentucky. We noticed that other clubs had teamed up with Canandaigua National Bank. We reached out, and our local branch said, ‘Absolutely!” HFLM Kiwanis, a member of Kiwanis’ Finger Lakes division, put up boxes around town for its collection. “In about a week, we filled the entire back of my pickup truck!” shared Mitchell. “We also purchased ten $25 gift cards to Walmart so that people can get other things they need. We collected many items, including food, toiletries, a lot of diapers, and other things we thought these families could use. The district is taking all collected items down to Kentucky next week.”

Honeoye Falls-Lima, Mendon Kiwanis Club participates in the Kentucky Tornado Relief Collection! President Peg Bobzin (l) & Rev Virginia Tyler-Smith (r) As one HFLM Kiwanis Facebook post stated, Mitchell and HFLM Kiwanis is extraordinarily grateful to all who supported and contributed to the Kiwanis Kentucky Tornado Relief Collection. “Our club joined in with many others across The New York District of Kiwanis International Clubs,” the post stated. “A special thank you to Canandaigua National Bank & Trust, Howard Hanna Real Estate Services Mendon-Honeoye Falls Office, St. John’s Episcopal Church of Honeoye Falls, the United Methodist Church of Honeoye Falls, and the First Presbyterian Church of Honeoye Falls. We cannot thank the community enough for their help in this project!” “Opportunities like this help teach kids about leadership, become leaders in their communities, and learn about giving back at a young age,” Mitchell said. “Hopefully, through Kiwanis Club, it will become second nature to them. We believe this is possible by working with people of all ages, talents and backgrounds through volunteer service projects and fundraising opportunities.” While Kiwanis kids learn the value of service, they are also learning how to plan and build their own successes. “We want to give these children the opportunities to achieve their dreams and succeed in life,” explained Mitchell. “What better way than to part with them, come alongside them, and help them see the benefits of giving back to their community? We hope to instill leadership qualities in them and give them confidence, building them up to the point where they can achieve any dream they would like. As many Kiwanians have before them, we believe they will grow into amazing leaders.” If you would like to learn more about Kiwanis, find your local chapter at Kiwanis.org, join us at an upcoming meeting, 2nd & 4th Wednesdays at noon, Lima Town Hall via ZOOM, or email HFLMKiwanis@gmail.com!

Most of the residents are retired, so the pace of life is gentle, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. This peace was shattered on Thursday, 12/30/21 just before 8:00 p.m. when a house exploded into flames. Neighbors, with the help of firemen, forced the door open, pulled the owner of the home out, and put her on oxygen. Almost certainly, they saved her life. The residents of Hidden Meadows Senior Community want to say, “Thank you!” to the Firefighters, EMTs and other related Emergency Response personnel. We are proud of your work and grateful for your service. May God bless you and watch over you! Wonderful neighbors! I am very blessed to live next door to the Hensler family. Words cannot adequately express how much their acts of kindness mean to me. Thank you. - JMH Rescued I have to thank a special person who took the time to help my runaway pup. This was in the afternoon on 1/10/22. My pup had got out of her collar and ran to a busy complex road. By the time I got back to the road, this person had my pup in her vehicle and then handed her to me. My thanks also to those who took the time to stop their vehicles and were patient. My pup survived the ordeal without harm. She means the world to me. I can’t express my gratitude enough for the helpfulness. God Bless!

No Jingle Bells? It seems like every day an old tradition or piece of history gets trashed or destroyed in our country by some so-called, well-meaning group. [Local school] recently banned playing or singing Jingle Bells. What's next, telling the students there's no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny? I think they should have to specify their reasons to the taxpayers of their school district. Side street speeding I live on the east side of [local town], and I can't believe how many people fly down my street. A lot of the streets don't have sidewalks, so I keep my dog on the grass, but sometimes I'm scared for myself because when there's a car coming from each direction, neither one will slow down. These are residential areas, not the expressway. Reasonable tree prices To the person complaining about Christmas tree prices: it is the one time of year that those families make the bulk of their income (especially local). It costs money, time, and energy to grow those trees and keep them healthy for you and your families to enjoy. If your tree cost you $54, that means it cost $4.50 a month. Then you have to count all those years they kept that tree. It really isn’t that expensive. They are farmers! They have to raise prices just as everyone else in the economy has. They need to make a living, too. Honestly, if you’re not happy about it, be a Scrooge and don’t get a tree at all.
Animal cruelty I have been made aware of a very sad, and possibly cruel, situation. On a local country road, there are three horses standing in a small corral that is all mud. They are very close to the road, and although I saw some hay spread on top of the mud, the horses look scrawny and sick. They look like they huddle together for warmth. I saw no shelter they could go into in this bitter weather. My question is this: why do people keep pets if they don’t take care of them? I worry for them on these frigid days and nights, but apparently there are no laws preventing this type of abuse.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Is Telehealth All It’s Cracked Up to Be
Medicare started paying for telehealth medical visits last year and will continue through the end of 2023. With telehealth, we sit in our homes and talk to our doctor on a screen, and Medicare pays for it. In the beginning, the number of telehealth visits skyrocketed -- and then fell dramatically. Is that because we learned the hard way just what the limitations of telehealth really are? There are people on both sides of the “should seniors use telehealth” debate. They both say they offer solid evidence for their opinion. Those who claim it’s a great thing for us to consult with our doctors via a little screen say it’s helpful because it keeps us out of the doctor’s office. We don’t have to go in among all the germs, and we don’t need to worry about transportation. On the other hand, those who are against telehealth appointments for seniors argue that many of us can’t even afford the very devices we would need for telehealth. Even if we have a cellphone, the screen is so small as to be worthless, especially if we have a vision or hearing problem. Then there are the plan fees needed for that device. And what of privacy when we need someone at hand to help navigate the software for us? Do we really want our grandchildren sitting there when we discuss a personal issue with our doctor? Even if we have a computer, one with a large monitor, how is that going to work when we need the doctor to look at a rash on our back? Or if we really ought to have a stethoscope pressed to our chest because of that ragged cough we’ve had for days? Note: If you have original Medicare, you’ll pay the same amount for the telehealth appointment as you would if you got the services in person. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Scan important documents and save them on a computer. Some documents cannot be discarded, but that does not mean they have to be stored in bulky file cabinets or desk drawers. Scan important documents such as medical receipts or tax returns and save them on your computer where they won’t take up any physical space. Purchase an external hard drive as a safety net where you can store backups of important documents in case a computer crashes and cannot be rebooted.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Freshen stuffed animals by securing a few in a pillowcase and adding a fabric softener sheet. Put in the dryer on low heat for 20 minutes, then remove and brush out the fur, if necessary, while still warm. * “Keep a quart container in the freezer and whenever you have a small amount of leftovers, chop them up and add it to your container. When it’s full, thaw it. Add some of your favorite soup beans, pizza sauce, milk and cheese, and you have a unique and delicious soup.” -- M. from Pennsylvania

* If you’ve been decluttering as a part of your New Year’s resolutions, and you came across old pairs of eyeglasses, know that you can donate them to any Lion’s Club in your area. They redistribute the glasses to those who cannot afford them. You don’t have to know the prescription, and they take reading glasses, too! * How can you keep snow and ice off your windshield? Some say a solution of three parts vinegar to one-part water sprayed on the windshield each night can cut your ice-scraping time in half or better. (Use caution to avoid your paint job.) Also, try covering your wipers with an old pair of long socks so they don’t freeze to the glass! * “For pastry cooking, try grating frozen butter into the flour. It cuts in better and will stay cool longer. This helps when I’m making shortbread, as the flour and butter need to be combined. I don’t end up having to put it in the fridge to cool it back down.” -- C.S. in South Carolina

PAW’S CORNER
Page 20
Off-Leash Dogs Bane of His Walks in Woods DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Hatch” and I frequently walk the trails of a state park near my house. A leash is required in the park, but many dog owners ignore this rule and allow their dogs to bound ahead. Not all of these dogs are well-socialized, and we’ve faced aggressive, unleashed dogs on the trails. I carry a walking stick in case I need to fend off an attacking dog -- something that hasn’t happened yet, though it’s come close once or twice. Please help me make other dog owners aware that off-leash dogs can make other dogs, and humans, quite nervous. Keeping dogs on leash will help avoid a confrontation, fight or injury. -- Doug S., Stoneham, Massachusetts DEAR DOUG: You’re absolutely right! Dog owners, always review the rules regarding pets on park lands. Even though forested trails seem remote and safer for dogs to run free without a leash, you never know if another dog is just around the bend. Further, even a leashed dog needs to follow basic commands like sit, stay and heel, and to come back immediately when called if the leash is accidentally dropped. Rules are typically posted at trailheads, as well as on park websites. There’s no reason to not be familiar with leash rules before going for a hike. If you encounter an off-leash dog while on a trail, remain calm. Shorten your dog’s leash so that he walks next to you. Stay calm and relaxed with the owner when they finally appear, too. Ask if they’re aware that there’s a leash rule on the trail, but don’t start a confrontation. The more awareness you can build of your park’s rules, the fewer offleash meetings you’ll face. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.

I HAVE A DREAM... Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which was delivered to a crowd of 250,000 in Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963, is one of the most memorable moments of Dr. King’s life. In the 17-minute monologue, Dr. King called for an end to racism. Interestingly, the “dream” component of the speech wasn’t in the original draft. Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson reportedly coached Dr. King to tell the listeners “about the dream.”

We were blessed with such a sweet, loyal pup when we added
Harper Mae to our family almost four years ago. She adores our children and has proven to be quite the protector of our home. Walks and fetch are her main hobbies, but she does occasionally enjoy jumping in the swamp of the canal or chasing the family chickens against Mom’s wishes. Thanks for letting us love on you Harper! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
