Many people struggle to find the right size clothing, shoes and undergarments. It’s a situation that affects both men and women. Consider these facts:
• Research by menswear retailer Jacamo found 22 percent of British men are wearing the wrong size clothes or shoes.

DEAR WILLIAM: Grab a book on cat care at the local bookstore or library and read it cover to cover. While cats are considered to be easier to care for than dogs, they still need to be properly house-trained and given a routine (which helps immensely with reducing anxiety-related behaviors, too).
I’m sure you’ve already stocked up on kitten food, though it’s a good idea not to buy too much to begin with. You’ll want to try a few different brands and types of food -- dry, wet or fresh -- to see what the kitten likes and how well he responds to each.
When you pick up your new kitten, talk to the shelter staff to learn about any particular behaviors the kitten has, any health issues that need monitoring, and any advice they have for getting him or her settled in. Cats being prepared for adoption are sometimes fostered out to make sure they can live easily with humans and to observe them for any health or behavioral issues that need to be ironed out before they’re ready to go to a forever family. e shelter will have that information for you so that there are no surprises (like territorial peeing).

Climate change: Climate change is predicted to cause issues to crop yields, especially in portions of the world where the population is growing the fastest. For example, a recent NASA study published in the journal Nature predicts that high greenhouse gas emissions may cause corn output to decline as early as 2030, but wheat output would increase. Farmers may need to roll with the punches and shift operations to cope with the environmental changes.

Why is it people think nothing of sending texts messages at all kinds of times?!
I’m tired of getting awakened by people sending me texts at unreasonable hours. How about some consideration?
I’ve been asked, why don’t I just turn my phone off at night?
Answer:
I would like to say thank you so very much to the wonderful woman (found out she is a nurse) who helped me out in the Wegmans parking lot awhile back. I was having a medical issue and she assisted me with my bags and walked me all the way to my car. I did not catch her name but I have and will continue to pay it forward.
1. I have both a son and father who have life-threatening medical conditions that I’ve multiple times been called for assistance on and I don’t want to not be there to help them. If you’re OK with missing a call about a loved one, that’s your choice, but it’s not mine.
2. If I had a fire, medical emergency, or break-in, I sure don’t want to wait for my phone to boot up.
Before you send someone a text, how about you ask yourself:
1. Do I expect the person I’m texting wouldn’t be sleeping now?
2. Is this a time I would call someone, instead of texting?
If the answers to those questions aren’t YES, then can I suggest you write your text so you don’t forget, but send at a later time?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your recent column on shingles. I am 66 and in fairly good health. I had both Shingrix shots about five years ago and take hydroxyurea for polycythemia vera (PV).
Around August 1, I noticed some spots on my forearm that appeared to be a spider bite. I went to my family doctor, and she immediately diagnosed me with shingles and put me on gabapentin, which didn’t help much. The next month was complete misery. I never really had itching or an extensive rash, but intense pain and burning developed from the top of my neck down to my left thumb and forefinger. My wife read that hydroxyurea lowers your immune system, which is probably why I had such a bad case of shingles despite the Shingrix shots.
My cousin is a retired anesthesiologist and recommended an epidural steroid injection (ESI) that would help me immediately. I had the injection, and within 24 hours, I had an 80% improvement in my pain level. Over the next month, the pain decreased another 10% to 15%. I went from being almost incapacitated to being able to live again in 24 hours. The outcome was life-changing!
It seems that doctors need to be brought up to date on ESIs for shingles. I understand that the studies are inconclusive, but the on-the-ground results seem to show that it is effective. The pain from shingles has to be experienced to really understand how debilitating it can be. ESIs are fairly inexpensive, and even if they only helped slightly, they would be worth the cost. To have the improvement I found is priceless. -- Anon.
ANSWER: I often recommend the vaccine to prevent shingles, but as your case shows, the vaccine isn’t perfect. I agree that your PV and its treatment with hydroxyurea may have predisposed you to the complication of shingles you had, called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). You are quite right that the pain can be extraordinarily severe.
I am glad you wrote because steroid injections are not a treatment that I have written about before. As you say, not all trials found a benefit, but the largest trial found that intrathecal injections (which are similar to epidural injections but are found to be more effective in a small trial) led to excellent or good pain relief in 90% of people with intractable PHN, compared to 4% in people who didn’t receive treatment.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a healthy 50-year-old man. When I was at the pharmacy recently, they said I could get a vaccine for pneumonia. Is this something I should do? -- S.I.
ANSWER: The pneumonia vaccine at age 50 is a new recommendation by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The risk for developing severe pneumonia from the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae starts to increase at age 50 and becomes much higher after 65. The new vaccines (PCV20 and PCV21 under the brand name Prevnar) have long-lasting protection for many strains of this bacterial species.
If you haven’t had this vaccine and are over 50, you should consider it during your next visit. (It’s OK to get the vaccine at the same time as the flu or COVID vaccines.)

Even though chimneys do not require daily upkeep, regular maintenance effortshelpchimneysoperatesafelyandpreventdeathsandinjurieswhile protecting homes from fire.
Various problems can arise when chimneys are not well maintained. Such problems include chimney fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and early failure of the chimney and heating sources that the chimney vents.
Carbon monoxide can be scary, as it is virtually invisible without a proper detector.TheNationalVitalStatisticsSystemsaysthat,in2015,393deaths resulted from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States. When carbon monoxide is breathed in, it builds up quickly and combines with the blood, reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. The Canada Safety Council says that body tissue and cells can’t function without oxygen.
Chimney fires are another potential byproduct of poor chimney maintenance. The Chimney Safety Institute of America notes that chimneys expel the byproducts of combustion, including smoke, water vapor, gases, unburned wood particles, hydrocarbon, tar fog, and assorted minerals, which can condense on the inside of the chimney flue. The residue, called creosote, is highly combustible. With the right conditions, a chimney fire can occur.
One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforatethesoilwithsmallholes. These holes allow air, nutrients andwatertopenetratealltheway to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong rootsareessentialtohealthy,lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeownersdetermineifitneeds to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can preventlawnsfromgettingtheair, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

Many people may practice the “love thy neighbor” creed, but when it comes to four-legged wildlife such as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes when outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thinned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has found that many areas of the country continue to report increased encounters with nuisance wildlife.
“While it can be a unique experience to spot wildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be discouraged from taking up residence,” advises Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed to rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected with rabies. Because of the risks associated with these pests, homeowners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

Rochester has its share of icons, but few have le a mark as enduring as George Eastman. e founder of the Eastman Kodak Company not only revolutionized photography, but also transformed the city of Rochester into a hub of innovation, industry, and culture.
Born in Waterville, NY, in 1854, George Eastman moved to Rochester with his family as a teenager. While starting his career as a humble bank clerk, a simple vacation plan changed everything. Eastman, eager to document his travels, purchased photography equipment only to discover that taking a photograph was an arduous and expensive process. Determined to make photography more accessible, Eastman began experimenting in his free time. His ingenuity and perseverance paid off in 1884, when he patented roll film, a lightweight alternative to glass plates. Four years later, in 1888, he introduced the Kodak camera, along with the now-famous slogan, “You press the button, we do the rest.” e device was simple to use and brought photography into the hands of ordinary people, sparking a cultural revolution. Kodak cameras became a staple in households worldwide, enabling people to capture everyday moments and preserve memories like never before.
Avenue, where he hosted elaborate dinners and music recitals. A lover of the arts, Eastman was instrumental in founding the Eastman School of Music, which remains one of the premier conservatories in the world. Today, his home has been preserved as the George Eastman Museum, the world’s oldest photography museum, attracting visitors from around the globe who come to learn about his life and legacy.
Eastman’s innovations extended beyond photography. He built an empire that epitomized modern business practices, from vertical integrationtointernationalmarketingcampaigns.Atitspeak,Eastman Kodak employed thousands in Rochester, cementing the city’s reputation as a center of technological advancement.
Eastman’s vision went far beyond corporate success; he believed deeply in giving back to the community that helped his company thrive. Eastman poured millions of dollars into the University of Rochester, playing a crucial role in its transformation into a world-class institution. He also supported the Rochester Institute of Technology, ensuring future generations had access to cutting-edge education. Healthcare was another area close to his heart. He established the Eastman Dental Dispensary and contributed significantly to local hospitals, leaving a legacy of care that continues to benefit Rochester residents.
Eastman’s generosity wasn’t confined to Rochester. He donated millions to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he insisted on remaining an anonymous benefactor for years, as well as to Tuskegee Institute, a historically Black university in Alabama. His global perspective and commitment to progress made him a rare figure whose impact transcended regional boundaries.
Despite his immense success, Eastman was a private man who valued discipline and routine. He lived in a grand mansion on East
Eastman’s approach to life and business reflected his belief in preparation, innovation, and service to others. Yet, his later years were marked by declining health. Aware that he was nearing the end of his life, Eastman took steps to ensure that his employees, his company, and the institutions he supported would continue to thrive. On March 14, 1932, he took his own life, leaving behind a succinct note: “My work is done. Why wait?” ough his death shocked many, it underscored his lifelong desire to control his destiny and leave the world on his terms.
Today, George Eastman’s influence remains deeply embedded in Rochester’s identity. e institutions he founded continue to flourish, from the University of Rochester’s medical center to the Eastman School of Music. His innovations in photography paved the way for the digital imaging technologies we rely on today, proving his foresight and ingenuity were well ahead of their time.
