Monitor Tire Pressure (BPT) - As the temperature drops, tire pressure falls with it. In fact, for every 10º drop in temperature, tire pressure decreases by 1 pound per square inch. - Low inflation can cause a number of problems with your vehicle. It increases fuel consumption, shortens the life of your tires and creates an unsafe driving experience. - Tire pressure should be inspected at least once a month and always before a long trip. So grab a tire pressure gauge and your vehicle’s owner manual before hitting the road this winter.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the early ‘90s, Pepsi owned 17 submarines, a cruiser, a frigate and a destroyer, due to a deal with the Soviet Union in which they exchanged soda for military equipment.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

COLD W EATHER W ILDLIFE IN HOM ES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAM AGE RISKS M any people may practice the “ love thy neighbor” creed, but w hen it comes to four-legged w ildlife su ch as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes w hen outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Because of the risks a ssociated w ith these pests, homeow ners should take extra precautions to protect against them. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SAFETY FIRST WHEN DRIVING WITH PETS Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot, but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes. The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING Look for a new job or fresh income streams. A rising cost of living is a concern for people from all walks of life, but it may be especially concerning for retirees or individuals with costs like childcare that can be hard to pare back. In such instances, individuals can look for new a job or fresh income streams. According to the Q3 2021 CNBC | Momentive Small Business Survey, 50 percent of small business owners say it’s gotten harder to find qualified people to hire compared to a year ago. And nearly one-third of survey respondents indicate they have open roles they have not been able to fill for at least three months. Individuals can explore local employment opportunities in an effort to find a new, more lucrative job that can help them combat a rising cost of living. Others who want to remain in their jobs can look for part-time work to supplement their existing income. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Bessie Smith (1894-1937): While there are female instrumentalists in the genre of jazz, in the early days many, such as Bessie Smith, were vocalists. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith would come to be known as “Empress of the Blues” thanks to her powerful voice. By the 1920s, Smith was among the highest paid black performers. Tragically, Smith’s life was cut short when she died from injuries sustained in a car crash on her way to a show in Memphis in 1937.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Travel Is Complicated Right Now

My neighbor still thinks she’ll be going on a cruise to a foreign country in the spring. She calls her travel agent every few weeks to ask if the cruise is still on. Of course the travel agent doesn’t want to say no and have to give back the money just yet, so the answer is yes. My neighbor has been busily sewing new outfits for her cruise dinners. Me, I’ve been keeping silent about it, but I fear that cruise might not come to pass. There is always debate about requirements for masks on cruise ships, but that might be the least of the concerns. The latest updates have several countries in Level 4 Do Not Travel categories. My neighbor’s destination is currently at a Level 3, which is Reconsider Travel. New ones are being added all the time. If you’ll be traveling in the next few months, especially if it’s internationally, look at AARP’s travel page for helpful information: www.aarp.org/travel. Watch the Department of State’s website as well: travel.state.gov/ content/travel.html. Look for the information on your specific destination, and keep an eye on it, as it’s all subject to change. Invest in trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Make sure you understand the details of what it will and won’t cover. Be sure what the cruise company’s policies are as well. Be certain you know exactly when you’ll need a COVID-19 test before you go -- and that you can get one. At this point, many areas have backlogs on testing appointments, and walk-in places are often backed up for many hours. If you’re traveling internationally, you’ll also need a test before you return. The logistics and timing can be complicated right now. Your best bet: Stay in close touch with your travel agent about changes, warnings and timing. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

S E V RA Thanks, First Responders! Last week, I was driving to the Sweden Dog Park with my two German Shepherds. The morning temperature was below 10 degrees - freezing cold! Suddenly, my car stalled out at the intersection of Redman Road and New Campus Drive. Officer Carla Fintak just happened to be traveling the same route and she came to my rescue! I was able to stay warm inside her patrol car while awaiting

Back to Drivers Ed For those who make left turns into a four lane road, per the NYS Driver’s Manual: “Approach the turn from the right half of the roadway closest to the center. Enter the left lane, to the right of the center line. When traffic permits, you can move out of the left lane.” Note: Enter the left lane, not the right lane because the right lane puts you in the blind spot of the person who was in front of you and who just did it correctly. No Jingle? Who Cares! About no Jingle Bells in the schools: I do know the history on the reasoning for this, but it’s only a song. There’s so many songs that kids can sing. Don’t be so upset over something so miniscule. Move on; really, it’s only a song. Please put more energy into helping the homeless or perhaps volunteering in a food pantry. That’s a much more important place to use this energy. Stop Animal Cruelty To the person who talked about horses being neglected on a local country road - please, please report this situation to the police or Lollipop Farm. They will send someone out to check. The owners will be prosecuted, and the horses will be rescued. Please don’t wait another minute, or they will die. I’m sure you don’t want that on your conscience. There is far too much animal abuse

Great Job! A huge Thank You to the firemen who responded to the fire at Seneca Place in the early morning hours on January 14th. Although some lost all, others’homes were spared. Of course, most important was the fact that there were no deaths or injuries of residents or firefighters. Also, Thank You to the staff at Pinehurst for inviting the residents in to get warm and have coffee, hot chocolate, and snacks. It was much appreciated. Last, but not least, thanks to the residents and others who were there to help Saturday morning when affected residents were allowed in to get essentials from their apartments. Seneca Place has always taken good care of their buildings and handled this disaster as well as could be expected. - Thankful

going on in this world and if the good, caring people don’t step up, who will? Animals are innocent and are on this earth for us to love and cherish, not abuse! Outdoor Cats There are pet owners on [local road] in [local area] who think it’s appropriate to let their cats wander around the neighborhood looking for food in sub-zero weather. Please don’t depend on good-hearted neighbors feeding them; it’s your responsibility. Seriously?! Was sad to see that 42% of respondents to the recent GVPS poll indicated they were not concerned about our planet and environment.

Risk to Chemotherapy Patient From Healthy Cat is Small

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

DEAR DR. ROACH: My neighbor is battling cancer for the third time. The medical personnel she sees when she goes for her chemotherapy treatments are urging her to get rid of her two cats. They claim the cats are a danger to her health. Wearing gloves and a mask while cleaning litter boxes will not help. Why? What do the cats have that can hurt someone going through chemotherapy? -- S.C. ANSWER: Cancer chemotherapy frequently causes damage to the body’s immune system. Many types of chemotherapy work against fast-growing cells, and while cancer cells are fast-growing, your neighbor’s healthy immune system cells, especially white blood cells, are also fast-growing and can be damaged by the chemotherapy. Avoiding potentially infectious agents is therefore wise advice for people going through chemo. There are several potential infections that can be transmitted from cats to humans. The one we worry about most is probably toxoplasmosis, a protozoan infection. Toxoplasmosis is a big concern in people with HIV, but also can be an issue in people who have recurrent chemotherapy or have a more prolonged reduction in immune system function. However, toxoplasmosis can be effectively avoided by wearing gloves while changing the litter box, keeping the cats indoors and feeding them only high-quality cat food and never raw meat. Cat bites or scratches can be very serious, especially to someone with an immune system that is less than perfect. If her cats occasionally bite or scratch, that would be a problem. There are a few other uncommon zoonotic diseases (ones that can be transmitted from animals to humans) that might be of concern. Her cats’ veterinarian would be a useful resource to find out more. The cats should, of course, be thoroughly evaluated. Allergies, not infection, might be the issue, but allergies are usually less of a problem during chemotherapy. The risks from a healthy indoor cat are very small. Risks must always be balanced against the very strong feelings people have for their pets, especially at a vulnerable time. I would not recommend separating a person from her cats without very good reason, and would want to know exactly why, since it’s not clear to me in this case. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. (c) 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CLOTHING AND CANCER PREVENTION Many people choose their clothes based largely on their own unique fashion sense. But the clothes people wear can serve a greater purpose than broadcasting their sense of style to the world. The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that clothing is the first line of defense against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet, or UV, rays. The right clothing can absorb and block UV radiation and the SCF recommends wearing such attire as part of an effective sun protection regimen. When purchasing clothing, consumers are urged to determine each article’s ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF. The UPF factor indicates what fraction of the sun’s UVA and UVB radiation can penetrate the fabric and reach the skin. Clothing with a UPF of 50 will only allow 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation to reach the skin. The UPF rating system is relatively new, so consumers in North America may not find UPF ratings listed on the labels of clothing they typically purchase from their favorite retailers. In addition, the sun protective clothing industry in North America is self-regulated, which means some, but not all, manufacturers’ claims regarding the safety of their clothing may be dubious. However, consumers concerned about the safety of the clothing they wear when spending time in the sun can speak with dermatologists about finding clothing manufacturers with strong reputations of producing sun protective clothing that can protect them from the sun’s UV rays.

Nurturing a Love for Reading at Churchville-Chili Elementary School BY AMANDA PULEO

C

hurchville-Chili Elementary School (CES) showcased their first Page Turners reading exhibition on Dec. 16. Three teams of voracious fourth grade readers faced off in front of the entire fourth grade class in the school gymnasium. They were determined to share their knowledge of the five books they read this semester as a result of their participation in Page Turners. Questions were asked by reading teacher Betsy Pereira and third grade teacher Amy Ciszak, and the answers came quickly and confidently from the teams. During short breaks from the action, team members shared with their audience why they love reading so much.

“This is our first year of Page Turners,” said Pereira. “It’s a wonderful enrichment opportunity for students who love to read, or who want to learn to love to read. Surprisingly, many of our most enthusiastic team members were not the most accomplished Team members worked together strategically readers to begin with.” to decide on correct answers to tough reading The extended day activity comprehension questions. is a way to build stamina, confidence and reading comprehension — skills that were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Competition was fierce, and the audience was intent on the action at the CES Page Turners tournament.

Page Turners at CES begins again in January with a new list of exciting books and hopefully many new members. Readers of all levels are encouraged to participate. Page Turners has been made possible with funding from the American Rescue Plan of 2021, which supports afterschool, summer and extended school day programs that promote enrichment opportunities, student engagement, and learning recovery due to the pandemic.

Club members committed to reading five grade-level books on their own time and meeting together once a week after school for book-related discussions and related activities. The 21 students read books ranging from graphic novel “Dog Man” by Dav Pilkey to historical novel “I Survived: The Shark Attacks of 1916” by Lauren Tarshis. Books are chosen by a committee that includes Pereira, Assistant Principal Kim Giancursio and teaching assistant Kathleen Hartwig. The current CES Page Turners members are: Nick Anderson, Lily Bridenbaugh, Grant Dobson, Mya Green, Aaron Hoose, Kinsley Keller, Carter Maysick, Iliana Melnik, Brody Meyers, Wyatt Micheli, Mason Morrison, Skyler Phillips, Olivia Placito, Ella Skuse, Madeline Smith, Reid Stedman, Elijah Tanksley, Damien Taylor, Corey Venturo, Zachary Wahls and Anabel Wilkinson. Students celebrate a job well done!

WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES

Keep Pets Prepared for Emergencies in Winter, Too

Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or clubbased fundraisers.

Dear Paws: Please remind your readers to include their pets in winter emergency preparedness planning. Last year, when the Texas power grid failed in extreme cold weather conditions, shelters saw many pets with cold-related injuries. When the power goes out on a cold night -- or for several days -- dogs and cats can’t just “tough it out.” -- Tyler in Southeast Texas Dear Tyler: You’re absolutely right. Readers, emergency preparedness should always include your pets. I warn my East Coast readers each summer at the start of hurricane season to put together a grab-and-go emergency kit for their pet. But every region experiences natural disasters, and sometimes they occur in the depths of winter. A winter-ready pet emergency kit should include: - A warm blanket for each pet. - A soft pad for pets to sleep on if you’re in an evacuation center. - Booties and sweaters to wear when pets go outside in freezing conditions. - Pee pads and pet waste bags. - Three days of canned or dry pet food, and bottled water. - A copy of each pet’s vaccination and medical records. - A three-day supply of each pet’s medication. - A list of important phone numbers, including their veterinarian. - Extra leash and collar for each pet, and extra ID tags. If your pet isn’t microchipped, I strongly recommend it. Pets have escaped from even the most responsible, organized owners. Keep them up to date on vaccinations as well -- it’s hard to predict whether your pet will be exposed to a disease by another cat or dog during an evacuation. You can find more tips and recommendations for emergency preparedness at https://www.ready.gov/pets.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * To soften food that is stuck on a pan, try soaking it overnight with fabric softener. Just fill the pan with enough water to cover the burned-on food, then lay a dryer sheet of fabric softener in the pan (poke it down so it will stay under the water). The next morning, you should be able to wipe the food right off. You can even use the fabric softener sheet as a scrubber. – A.S. in Maryland * I installed rivet rings in the corner of my bathroom towels. Now, when I hang a towel up, it stays hung up. – I.S. via e-mail * Ways to avoid spam, that nuisance e-mail that comes to fill your e-mail box in droves: Use a name that has both words and numbers. * To keep thread straight when threading needles, I run the end across a cheap glue stick. It works very well, and the glue washes right out of the thread. Or, if you are afraid it will be sticky, you can just clip the end off before you start sewing. – T.E. in Kentucky * To make butter easier to spread on bread or toast, we keep a stick in a plastic sandwich baggie. We just handle the butter a bit through the bag. It softens, but doesn’t overmelt, like when you put it in the microwave. You can just reseal the baggie and put it back in the fridge. – N.U. in Florida

Albert “Al” W. Stockslader January 12, 2022 Geneseo: At age 84, Al passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at the Jewish Home of Rochester, NY. He was born in Rochester, NY to the late Albert and Frances Stockslader. Survived by his beloved wife, Carol A. Stockslader; his children, Sandra (Phil) Recchio, Susan Smelt ( John Ahlman), Michael (Patricia) Stockslader; his brother, Arnie (Ann) Stockslader; his sister, Carol Mattice; his grandchildren, Philip (Nicki) Recchio, Alex Recchio, Gabriel Recchio, Patrick Smelt, Rebecca (Aaron) Ward, and Jonathan Stockslader; his 4 great-grandchildren, Leila, Avi, Mira, and Addison, and his chosen granddaughters, Scarlette Buckalew and Sebrina Trout, along with several nieces and nephews. Al began his career in the meat business with the purchase of Zorn’s meat market on Thurston Road in the early 60s. He owned and operated several markets on the west side before moving to Fairport, New York under the title of the Fairport Butcher Shop. He closed his market in the late 90s after 35 years in the meat business. In his retirement years, he drove a van for Community Development Services and Boces 1 in Fairport, New York. He was attached to his clients and gave his time and resources to provide extra activities for them. He belonged to a variety of volunteer and fraternal organizations throughout his life, from the Volunteer Fire Department in Scottsville, NY, the Scottsville Lions Club and finally the Fairport Chamber of Commerce. He officially retired to Conesus Lake where he developed his model train hobby, his boating skills, and devoted himself to his family, especially his grandchildren.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

In memory of Al, please show a special kindness to someone less fortunate. Al’s Funeral Service will take place at 11:00AM on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Road in Livonia or can be live streamed at: http://facebook.com/ stsmaryandmatthewfaithcommunity.

FINANCING FUNERALS According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives. EFFICIENCY AT WORK Information is now seemingly always at our fingertips thanks to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. While these devices may theoretically allow workers to become more productive, research suggests otherwise. Professor, researcher and author Gloria Mark with the University of California, Irvine says that activity switching and being frequently interrupted, including self-interruptions like checking social media and email, can lead people to develop short attention spans. That inability to focus for extended periods of time can adversely affect efficiency.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS TO KEEP YOU AND OTHERS HEALTHY

Throughout much of North America, flu season peaks between December and February. But flu season can occur anywhere from October to March, advises the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The flu is contagious and can sideline people for extended periods of time. The CDC says that each year one in five Americans gets the flu. Taking steps to fend off the flu can help men and women and the people they routinely come in contact with. Foods: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection. A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages. Flu shot and medications: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off. Stop germ proliferation: Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. Well individuals should avoid contact with sick people. Frequent hand-washing with soap and water can stop germs from spreading. When soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help. People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill. Rest and restore: Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus. People of all ages should take steps to protect themselves from the flu.
