WHAT TO KNOW WHEN BUYING FROM A PRIVATE SELLER Insist that a mechanic be allowed to examine the car. One of the biggest risks of buying from private sellers is that such vehicles are rarely under warranty when put up for sale, and sellers likely won’t guarantee parts. That underscores the importance of having a vehicle thoroughly examined by a certified mechanic before buying it. Private sellers should have no issue allowing this, especially when buyers pay for the inspections. If sellers are unwilling to let mechanics inspect the car, look elsewhere for your next car or truck.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than 1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895. They then compared birth and death information with those centenarians’ siblings and spouses so they could compare their early environment and genetic background and their adult environment. Their research found that most centenarians were born between September and November.

RAKING LEAVES: W hile raking leaves might not jump out at you as a great w ay to spend a nice fall afternoon, families often find raking leaves together soon turns into a fun day in the yard. Build leaf piles and let the kids jump in, and then do it again. W hen raking, encourage kids to collect some colorful leaves and set them aside. Once the raking is done, you can then enjoy making some homemade crafts w ith the leaves you and your youngsters just collected. DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor. (585) 225-7663 ROCROOFANDCHIMNEY.COM SIMPLE WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME When temperatures get especially low, pipes with water still in them can freeze and burst, potentially leading to significant water damage. When you no longer need to water the lawn and when temperatures get too cold to wash your car in the driveway, be sure to shut off the water supply to outdoor spigots and sprinkler systems. Once you do that, drain them so no water is sitting in the pipes when temperatures dip.

GENERAL CONTRACTING RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

TOP ROOFING TRENDS (NAPSI)—While replacing your roof can be expensive, it may pay to know more about increasingly popular stone-coated metal. There are five good reasons:

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING

1. Durability: Combining the strength of steel with the design versatility of crushed stone, stone-coated metal roofing offers a better-looking way to protect your investment. Thanks to its engineering, stone-coated metal stands up to harsh conditions, including fire, wind, hail, hurricanes, seismic activity, and extreme cold and heat. 2. Curb Appeal: Stone-coated metal comes in a collection of eye-catching contours and colors. Panels can resemble Mediterranean tile, hand-split wood shake, heavyweight shingle or even old-world Italian tile.

Reduce energy costs and improve the safety of your home through energy efficiency measures in owned or rented property.

3. Long-Term Value: Stone-coated metal offers greater longevity— three—plus times more—and lower maintenance needs than most other roofing products. “In an average lifetime, a homeowner will need to replace an asphalt roof at least three times as often for the same cost of one stonecoated metal roof,” explained Mark Gallant, Vice President of New Product Development at DECRA Metal Roofing, the original stone-coated steel roofing system, with over 60 years of research and practical experience.

PATHSTONE CORPORATION IS OFFERING

4. Keep It Cool: Metal roofing can help cool your home through air space between the panels and the roof deck, reducing heat transfer. Some roofing colors can also reflect unwanted solar heat.

FREE HOME ENERGY IMPROVEMENTS The PathStone Weatherization Assistance Program is available for income-eligible households in Monroe County located outside of the city limits. HEAP Recipients Automatically Eligible Income guidelines are: Family of 1: $34,224 Family of 2: $44,760 Family of 3: $55,296 Family of 4: $65,820

5. Save Money: A stone-coated metal roof could net you a discount on your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance agent. Overall, a stone-coated metal roof can help your home look better, feel more comfortable while you live in it and be easier to sell when you want to. Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees. Page 7

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air.

* Fill your salt and pepper shakers a fourth of the way with uncooked white rice. Dry rice will allow the salt or pepper to flow more freely from the shaker. If your shaker is opaque, you can tell when it’s time to add more salt or pepper when the shaker starts to rattle.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Tic Tacs got their name from the sound they make when they are tossed around in their container.

* Mark old toothbrushes with masking tape so you can tell the difference between cleaning brushes and those you use for your teeth. You can clean a toothbrush in the dishwasher. Put it with the silverware. * Because fabric softeners can leave residue on the dryer’s lint trap, clean yours out at least every other month. Just scrub with plain old soap and water. * “Add this to the list of wonderful cleaners for wood floors: tea. Just brew a couple of cups and use the tea as you would your regular wood floor cleaner. It’s nice and shiny afterward.” -- P.L. in Oregon

Historical Heirloom Afghan: A Tale of Craftsmanship and Community Spirit

I

BY COLLEEN FRESSIE, AVON LIBRARY SENIOR CLERK

n 1955, Normotta Yarn published the instructions for the Heirloom Afghan. As described in the notation to the pattern, this afghan had been created by Margareta Ohberg, shown in Women’s Day Magazine, and won first prize in a nationwide contest while being exhibited at the Eastern States Exposition. Dorothy Dunderdale started to follow the pattern for the Heirloom Afghan. She was able to crochet 35 of the squares and cross stitch the pattern for three of the houses, two of the center flowers, and two of the corner flowers before she died. Lisa Settle Dunderdale took charge of the afghan, giving it to her mother Gail Settle, who, in turn, offered it to the Avon Free Library’s Sit ‘N’ Knit Group to finish and donate it to the library as a fundraiser. As daunting as it was to set needle to the beautiful squares, the members of the group and many staff and community members outside the group rose to the challenge.

Starting in April 2023, the master needle workers, including Gail Settle, Eloise Puls, Kathy Barsz, Carol Cattone, Colleen Fressie, Mary Lathron, Grace Frenzel, Cathy Hancher, Pamela Bickford, and Linda Conrad spent over 350 hours during and outside of the weekly Sit ‘N’ Knit meetings, meticulously following the patterns for the afghan, each sharing her particular skills with the others. The group agreed that some of the buildings specified in Ohberg’s original pattern should be replaced with buildings that are special to the Avon Community. Pamela Bickford turned one of the building patterns into our library and Gail Settle created the Opera

Block Pattern. The group also agreed that a center square would reflect the time and place of the undertaking: Avon Free Library, 2023. Besides needlepointing squares, Linda Conrad crocheted the border and Mary Lathron secured the backing. This was truly a “Community” project!

The library is raffling this afghan off this winter. Tickets are available at the Avon Library, and the drawing will be held during the Avon Holiday Spectacular.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Seizure-Like Reactions Pose the Question of Epilepsy --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband experienced seizure-like

episodes without tonic/clonic body movements in high altitude. These episodes occured while he was traveling, being physically active in Colorado and skiing in France. Both episodes happened at least 12 hours after physical activity. Our general physician back home felt that these were not true seizures, instead a reaction to possibly being dehydrated in high altitudes. A vast amount of testing resulted in nothing unusual going on with his cardiovascular system or his brain. But just recently, he had another episode two days after being active, hydrating at sea level and banging his head -- with more body movement this time. I have been researching online, and seizure-like reactions seem to occur due to electrolyte imbalances. It is very hard to get to a neurologist without an excessive wait time. Do you think antiseizure medications are warranted? -- S.S. ANSWER: It’s important to separate a seizure (which anyone can get if there is enough stress to the brain) from epilepsy, a condition where the person is susceptible to recurring seizures. For it to be considered epilepsy, a person generally needs at least two unprovoked seizures (with no unusual stress to the brain) at least 24 hours apart. Only epilepsy is treated with long-term antiseizure medicines. There is indeed a risk of developing seizures while at a high altitude. In addition, there are many other conditions that can provoke a seizure. You mentioned electrolyte imbalance, but sodium (too much or too little) as well as too little amounts of magnesium and calcium are among the most common. Low blood sugar is a frequent cause. Some recreational drugs cause seizures, but withdrawal from drugs, especially alcohol, is more common. Metabolic diseases of the kidney and thyroid are also common. Sleep deprivation, brain injury (especially stroke, but also trauma), brain tumors and brain infections are all common triggers that your husband probably received an evaluation for. Had it only been the first seizure, my advice likely would have been the same as your physician’s, although I probably would have suggested a consultation with an epileptologist (a neurologist with special expertise in seizures). Now that he has had a second -- and unprovoked -- seizure, my suspicion that he has epilepsy is much higher. (In hindsight, it’s clear that the first reaction really was a seizure.) Most people experiencing their first seizure while at a high altitude were eventually found to have epilepsy after further testing, including an electroencephalogram (EEG). The high altitude doesn’t cause the seizure; it just increases the risk of a seizure in a person who has an underlying propensity for it. This may also occur with many medicines, especially those used for depression. Your husband should see an epileptologist as soon as possible. I strongly feel that it’s unwise for nonexperts to prescribe anti-seizure drugs, except as a treatment until a patient can be seen by an expert. I have seen that done many times, and it is done improperly, at least according to the expert a patient eventually sees. Your husband needs a timely and comprehensive reevaluation. Epileptologists recognize that new onset seizures in an adult require a more timely appointment.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf • 2 cups half-and-half • 4 egg yolks • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar • 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) 1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Cat and Dog Can Coexist

Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I periodically dog-sit for a neighbor, keeping her small Beagle, Downy, at my house while she travels. The problem is my cat, Sparks. He is absolutely infuriated when I bring Downy home, even though Downy doesn’t bark at him. Sparks will yowl and glare at the dog every time they’re in the same room. And now, Sparks is peeing on the rug next to my bed the entire time that Downy visits. What can I do about this? -- Cheryl J., Reno, Nevada DEAR CHERYL: Ouch! Cats are notoriously territorial, not just with dogs but with other cats, too. And Sparks does not seem to be settling in to the notion that Downy is an OK guest to have. It’s clear that you’ll have to keep the two of them separate when Downy is visiting. But by leaving a mess on your bedroom rug, Sparks is signaling that separation may not be enough. The situation is really stressing him out. He’s drawing the line by marking your rug, a clear statement: This is my territory! The quickest way to resolve the issue, of course, is to stop dog-sitting for your friend -- or dog-sit by periodically visiting her home throughout the day to spend time with Downy and make sure he has food and water. But if that’s not possible, and you intend to keep Downy at your house instead, you’ve got only a few options. • Keep a clear separation between Downy and the cat. Place their food bowls in separate rooms with the door closed between them. • Change out the rug in your bedroom for a new one, and spray it with cat pheromone (available at pet stores) to try to stop Sparks from peeing on it. • Consider giving Sparks an anti-anxiety medication (available from the veterinarian) to reduce his stress. Best of luck. Be patient with both pets; they may never be comfortable around each other, but you may be able to keep them both from being too anxious.

Paying It Forward, One Onion At A Time I was dining at my favorite local restaurant, enjoying my usual: the famous garbage plate. Now, as we all know, the portion sizes of these beasts could feed a small army! So I always bring snack size baggies with me to save small portions for later, as well as the extra toppings. I had bagged up all of my leftovers and was walking to my car when I saw an older gal struggling under the weight of a hefty garbage plate. The mighty plate proved to be too much and clattered to the ground, spilling some of its precious contents! I sprang into action as quickly as I could (I ain’t no spring chicken myself!) and saved what I could for this hungry patron. As I helped wrangle her meal, I noticed her plate was lacking the integral diced onions. How serendipitous! I promptly pulled my snack size baggie of diced onions from my pocket and handed it to her with a slight bow. She departed, bounty in tow, off to enjoy her sumptuous GP with diced onions. It made my day to make her day. Bon appetit! Thank you! I’d like to thank the parents of TE for raising an honest young man. Last week I lost my purse while running errands. I went home and couldn’t find it, so I went to the last place I remember stopping - my local dollar store. When I went back, T was the first person to greet me with my purse - what a relief! There was an older gentleman who said, “Lady, you’re lucky to get your purse back!” and he was right. I was so thankful, not for the $10 left in it but my license, DPA, credit cards, pictures, and more were all there. I’m 88 years old and the only thing I could remember was that I lost my bag. This is a tip for older ones: make a list of everything in your wallet and leave it in a safe place at home. Then if you lose it, you’ll be able to know what exactly you’re missing. T - it would be a better world if everyone was honest like you. Thank you!

SHARE WITH US Junk and More I cannot believe how the village is OK with a business using a historical area for junk/storage. This has been brought up to the village office and code enforcement. It seems like they are more concerned about a single vehicle in a remote location than the center of the village. Why? It makes me wonder about the special privileges some people/owners receive. It wasn’t that long ago the village was all over a business in the same area to clean up, so why does this place get a free pass? I know NOTHING was said because MORE junk is being piled up. Boats, vehicles, trailers, vans, lawn mowers, appliances, plows, A-Verdi boxes, lawn furniture, toys, etc. Visitors are seeing this area and the village should be ashamed. STOP THE SMOKERS Please stop the people taking over some of the senior apartment buildings by smoking inside every day for years. It is putting others’ health at risk. Get them out! They do it because they can. What are you afraid of? You’re not very good at your job. Do your job or find another one that you’re good at. You don’t take away one’s right and give it to another. QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW

Pressure-free: Regardless of what retirees did for a living prior to calling it a career, chances are they dealt with work-related stress. In fact, the American Stress Institute reports that 83 percent of workers in the United States suffer from work-related stress, while Statistics Canada reports that 62 percent of Canadian workers say work is their main source of stress. After a lifetime of confronting work-related stress, individuals who want to work in retirement should look for pressure-free opportunities. This is an important quality, as the ASI indicates that stress has been linked to increased rates of heart attack, hypertension and other disorders.

Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
