PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE

Protect outside

Drain birdbaths, clean out downspouts and remove water from other items where water can freeze and cause damage. Inspect roofing prior to the snowy season, but stay off roofs during freezing weather.

Remove snow shovels and other winter gear from storage and make sure the items are easily accessible during snowstorms.

The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicate textures while we slept. How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upon their leaves....

But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer.

~John Burroughs, “The Falling Leaves,” Under the Maples

Wood firepit: As their name suggests, wood firepits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fireplaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood firepits are generally easy to set up and install, and many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and flames that’s synonymous with wood firepits.

One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME

Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxingsanctuary.

There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room.Insulatingproperlywillallow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort.

Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help controlfirebylimitingitsspread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity andpropagationofnoise.

What Prompted the Discontinuation of Fen-Phen?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 71-year-old healthy female who has struggled with my weight all my life. In the ‘90s, I thought I had finally found the solution in fen-phen. It was like a miracle! It took all the nagging thoughts of food out of my brain. My question is, with all the drug ads on TV every day blithely showing the many side effects leading up to -- and including -death, why can’t we use fen-phen? I worked in a hospital where a very large number of employees were taking it with great results. I never heard a hint about anything that could affect someone’s health.

Also, I talked to many of the other patients at the doctor’s office where I was receiving it. Everyone was overjoyed with the results. I had no temptations and no constant yammering in my brain to eat something. As I said, it was a miracle. I felt like a normal person. So, why are all of these drug companies allowed to advertise their products, but one drug that truly worked had to get snatched away from us? -- M.H.

ANSWER: Fen-phen was a combination of fenfluramine and phentermine, which was approved for use in 1986.

Approximately 18 million prescriptions were written for this medicine until 1987, when an association was made between the use of fen-phen and valve diseases of the heart. These cases were reported with fenfluramine or with the related dexfenfluramine alone, but never with phentermine alone. (Phentermine remains on the market.) Approximately 150 cases were reported.

Subsequent studies estimated that seven out of 10,000 people who took fenfluramine or fen-phen for less than four months developed valve disease, while 35 in 10,000 people who took fenfluramine or fen-phen for more than four months developed valve disease. They were compared to people who either took phentermine alone or did not use a weight-loss medicine. The U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration determined that the risk of valve disease (some being severe enough to prompt valve replacement surgery) was too high, so the FDA asked manufacturers to remove these drugs from the market. I fully understand your perspective. Some people are willing to take the risk of a side effect because the benefit of the medicine is so great. In my opinion, people should have the option of making their own decision, but in this case, the FDA felt that the risk was too high.

I have not seen a medicine for weight loss as effective as fenphen until recently, when semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, not yet approved for weight loss) became available. Just as you say, many of my patients report that they were able to easily control their eating while on these medicines, and as of the time I am writing, there have not been any serious adverse effects of taking these drugs, although there are plenty of milder effects.

However, these medicines only work when you continue to take them, and stopping them generally results in rapid regain of the weight that was lost. It’s important to realize that if you take a weight-loss drug, you’re making a commitment to a long-term treatment.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE

Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life.

People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs.

The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility.

Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

Here’s a tip

• Two tips for sewing buttons: First, for pants buttons, use unwaxed dental floss. It’s incredibly strong and can take a lot of abuse. Second, slip a pin between the button and the fabric before sewing on. When you’re finished, remove the pin. e button has some room behind it, and it will last longer.

• is is a tip for us singletons. I love whipped topping on my hot chocolate, but it doesn’t always last in my fridge. I buy a tub of it, and spoon it into mug-size dollops on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. When the sheet is full, I freeze them. ey can be peeled off easily and slipped in a container or plastic bag. When I make my hot chocolate, I plop one in straight from the freezer. It takes only minutes to so en and melt. And it’s delicious!

We are putting a healthy and yummy spin on caramel sauce for dipping your apples! We are using dates in this SUPER EASY recipe. Ask an adult to help you make this.

What are dates?

Dates are the fruit of the date palm tree, which is grown in many tropical regions of the world. They are chewy with a sweet flavor and are a good source of fiber, potassium, iron, and antioxidants. Eating dates can help improve digestive health, lower cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and support healthy brain function.

Fun Facts recipe

The first cookbook written in English was “The Forme Of Cury,” compiled by chefs of King Richard II in 1390.

1950s: Invention of the caramel apple

A Kraft Foods employee, Dan Walker, was credited with this delicious caramel dunked apple treat.

16 Medjool Dates, pitted

¾ cup unsweetened plant-based milk

1 tsp sea salt

1 tsp vanilla extract

Add all ingredients (starting with the milk) into a high powered blender or food processor and blend until mixture is smooth and no date chunks are detectable. Add more milk, 1–2 tablespoons at a time, if needed to help the blending process or to thin the caramel to your liking. Use immediately or store in the fridge for later.

CougarTech FIRST Robotics Team Pushes the Boundaries of Innovation and Education

In the heart of Honeoye Falls, a group of young minds is blazing a trail of innovation and engineering excellence. e HF-L CougarTech FIRST Robotics Team, a dynamic and dedicated group of students from both RushHenrietta Senior High School and Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, is making waves in the world of robotics and STEM education. eir journey is a testament to the power of teamwork, creativity, and perseverance.

Founded by inventor Dean Kamen in 1989, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)

Robotics is an international organization that aims to inspire young people to become science and technology leaders. eyarededicatedtofosteringaglobalcommunity including values of teamwork, creativity, and lifelong learning, ensuring every student has the opportunity to become a leader and make a positive impact on our world. e HF-L CougarTech team, under the guidance of dedicated mentors and teachers, fully embraces this mission.

for future careers but also help them develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Giles, the electrical team lead, says, “Robotics helped me gain an interest in something I never knew I enjoyed, electrical. Along with that, it has furthered my experience in STEM and gave me a place to share my interests.”

Beyond engineering, Team 2228 has a vital operations side, focusing on marketing, safety, and finance. ey promote the team’s image, using creativity to create posters and social media content to attract members and support. A safety team ensures the well-being of members and observers through protocols, training, and workspace vigilance. Finally, managing budgets, securing sponsorships, and fundraising falls to the finance team. Each year, they face the challenge of designing a robot that not only fulfills the competition’s tasks but also stands out in terms of innovation and aesthetics. Additionally, this group creates unique team merchandise such as t-shirts and buttons that embody the competition theme, fostering team identity and community engagement.

e HF-L CougarTech team is not content with just building robots; they are also committed to giving back to districts. ey regularly participate in demonstrations and other events - such as parades - to inspire and educate the next generation of innovators. eir impact extends beyond the school walls, making a positive mark on the wider community.

Team 2228 was officially established in 2006 by residential members who wanted to boost STEM engagement among students, giving them more opportunities. Originally, the team represented Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, but in 2009, CougarTech merged with the FRC team from neighboring Rush-Henrietta. Since then, they have proudly represented both schools.

e team competes in the annual FIRST Robotics Competition, where they are challenged to design, build, and program a robot to complete a specific set of tasks. However, their journey goes far beyond building robots: it’s about problem-solving, collaboration, and learning valuable life skills. Over the last few years, CougarTech has won multiple awards at competitions and traveled for competitions, most recently venturing to Cleveland.

Members of the HF-L CougarTech team come from diverse backgrounds and interests, but they all share a passion for science and technology. As they work together on the robot, they learn valuable skills such as mechanical engineering, so ware programming, electrical wiring, and project management. ese skills not only prepare them

Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of parents, teachers, mentors, and sponsors. Mentors help guide participants in the right direction toward success while also allowing collaboration among student members. e HF-L CougarTech team is grateful for the support they receive, which allows them to pursue their dreams and inspire others. ey primarily partner with a 501(c)(3) non-profit - Rochester Community Robotics - which provides tax benefits to both sponsors and individual donors.

As the CougarTech FIRST Robotics team continues to push the boundaries of innovation and education, they remindusthefutureoftechnologyandscienceisincapable hands. eir journey is a testament to the power of passion, collaboration, and dedication, proving that with the right support, young minds can achieve remarkable feats.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS

Fleas: Fleas are parasitic blood-suckers that reside on the coats of pets. Scratching, hot spots, hair loss, and tapeworms (which are carried by fleas) can be symptomatic of flea infestation. Some people may notice actual fleas on their dogs, while others may identify the flea dirt against a dog’s skin. Flea prevention medicines and medicated shampoos can help keep fleas at bay.

PAW’S CORNER

How Long Will Dog’s Heatstroke Recovery Take?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Two weeks ago, my Golden Retriever Lollie suffered a heatstroke. I let him outside into the backyard around midmorning. When I checked on him a er about a half hour, he stumbled to me and collapsed. I rushed him to the veterinarian, where he was treated. Lollie is recovering, but I am terrified to let him outside again. Why did he have problems so fast? Will this episode affect his health long-term? -- Greg in Houston

DEAR GREG: I’m glad to hear that Lollie is recovering, because heatstroke can be deadly -- as you know. Your fear is normal, because you’re clearly a caring pet owner, and you don’t want Lollie to be injured again.

at care and attention is perhaps the biggest factor in Lollie recovering fully and having fewer long-term complications from his heatstroke.

e reasons why Lollie suffered heatstroke aren’t as clear, but there are so many factors that could have contributed to it. e morning may have been hotter than usual. Lollie may have had an underlying illness that made it harder for him to withstand the warmer temperature. He might not have drunk as much water as he needed to maintain his internal temperature.

You did all the right things: letting him outside earlier in the day; checking on him periodically; and immediately taking him to the vet as soon as you saw his symptoms were serious.

Keep following the vet’s instructions to support Lollie’s care as he recovers. It may be weeks or months before he can spend the same time in the heat. He’ll get tired more easily, so his daily walks should be kept short. Make sure he’s eating and drinking enough water. All these factors will improve his health for the long term.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

[T]hat old September feeling... of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air.... PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER

Keeping a car waxed and sealed can help maintain a durable exterior finish. This includes not only the paint, but the rubber and vinyl parts of the car’s exterior.

Winter is a good time to switch to a heavy-duty synthetic wax that can shield against water and road salts. High-quality sealants can be used on bumpers, trim and rubber door seals as added protection. Speak with an automotive retailer or even the car dealership if you are unsure which products will make your car’s parts most durable for winter weather. Do not stop washing your car just because the weather is cold. Slushy, wet roads and snow-melting salts can speed up the formation of rust or other decay on the undercarriage of the vehicle. These materials will need to be periodically cleaned off. Flush the underside of the vehicle whenever possible, taking advantage of any dry, slightly warmer days.

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED

• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.

• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go.

• Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery.

• Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized.

• Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates.

• Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.

• Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion.

• Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

I’d like to thank the hard working folks at NYSDOT.

I called the hot line and the pot holes that have been shaking my entire house and wrecking my car’s front end…. ARE GONE! I never saw the crew, but I can see that the pot holes have been repaired. Thank you NYSDOT!

We appreciate your thoughtfulness and kindness.

[Local

Park] Debacle

Can someone please explain why the pickleball and tennis courts at [local park] are LOCKED at noon/1pm on a beautiful Saturday in September!? It is baffling that these courts would not be open dawn to dusk when the weather is nice. What is the harm in people playing an outdoor sport on a public court?!

Sitting ducks

I live in a small community that is 62 and over and disabled. Recently our community has been taken over by a new company which no one within our facility has seen, met, or even heard about. We only know of the name, and yet that doesn’t even to seem to be the truth! Everyone here is a little scared because we don’t know what’s going on and from inside information everyone’s checks have not been cashed for rent. We have no one in the office and no maintenance! There are three communities that this supposed company bought and they too are in arms about the situation. Our grass is getting a little out of hand, and being a disabled community, people are a bit scared, and no one has any answers for us. Please help us!

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER

The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises.

According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB

Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ

Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.
