STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There have been more than 300 different Kit Kat flavors in Japan, including soy sauce, “European cheese” and wasabi. Some of them are limited or regional editions. Because the candy bar’s name coincidentally sounds like the Japanese expression “Kitto Katsu,” which translates to “You will surely win,” it is a popular good-luck gift for students ahead of their university exams.

Poor installation and orders of standard rather than custom sized windows could result in poor fitting and seals. STORING TOOLS PROPERLY REDUCES INJURY RISK AND PROMOTES ORGANIZATION Whether homeowners have a handful of tools or an entire collection of equipment, proper storage of these items means the difference between staying organized and safe or having to waste time looking for tools and running the risk of injury. Tools often gravitate to other rooms of the house or become misplaced. When they’re brought out for use, tools may not be returned to the toolbox or shed, taking up residence in drawers or closets or just being left out in the open. Improper storage of tools also may create safety risks for the persons doing the renovation and other members of the household. The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that hundreds of thousands of injuries treated at emergency rooms are related to power tools and workshop equipment. While the majority of these injuries occur while using the tools, improper tool storage can still cause injury. By taking care of tools and keeping them orderly, homeowners can lengthen the life expectancy of their tools and reduce the likelihood of tool-related injury. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Social Security Benefit for 2023 It’s official: Our Social Security increase for 2023 will be 8.7%. They say it’s the largest increase in 40 years. For the average senior, that’s going to mean a $146 monthly increase. Plus we’re getting a small “rebate” on that massive Medicare Part B increase we faced last year when the cost went to $170.10 to pay for Aduhelm, an Alzheimer’s disease drug that was said to cost $56,000 per year. (After facing criticism, manufacturers had to cut the cost in half, down to $28,200.) We’ll now save $5.20 on our Part B premium, with the average monthly deduction being $164.90. The Part B annual deductible will drop to $226, a $7 savings. What’s disturbing is that only a few months ago the financial gurus were expecting we’d receive a 10.2% increase on Social Security, based on all the high prices we’ve been seeing this year and will likely see into 2023. Instead, they’ve lowered that to the 8.7% ... while prices have continued to rise. The problem is how those annual increases are calculated. They use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners And Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which calculates the prices of goods and services for things those urban workers care about: clothing, education, electronics and so on. That CPI-W covers 29% of the population. Instead, they should use the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E), which focuses on goods and services that seniors spend money on: medical, drugs, food, housing and so on. The next time you call your senators and representatives, be sure to ask why the Elderly index isn’t being used. After all, they’ve been thinking about it since the 1980s. Meanwhile, don’t let the Medicare open enrollment period pass you by. Until Dec. 7 you have the option to make changes to your original Medicare Advantage plan, supplemental plan and prescription drug plan.

MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES
CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Plant a tree. Trees have long symbolized life and wisdom. Trees can live for dozens of years, growing larger and more vibrant with each year that passes. Planting a tree in a loved one’s name will create a beautiful respite that people can visit and enjoy. A small plaque or another type of sign can feature the name of the person being memorialized.
he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Helping a “Found” Cat Get Home DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My friend found an orange cat matching the description on a paper flyer posted on a nearby telephone pole. However, the email address listed on the flyer keeps coming back as “invalid,” so she has no way to contact the owner. What else can she do to return the cat to its rightful owner? -- Jimmy V., via email DEAR JIMMY: Kudos to you and your friend for caring for the lost cat and trying to get it back to the owner! The first thing to do is to contact nearby shelters and veterinarian’s offices and tell them that you’ve found a lost cat but cannot contact the owner. They may have you bring in the cat to scan for a microchip -- the best way to identify pets and reunite them with their owners when a collar and tag are lost. Or they may ask for a description and have you email a photo of the cat so they can put up a “found” flyer in their lobby. Chances are, if the owner has already put up flyers, they have probably been checking with shelters regularly to see if their cat has been reported found or has turned up there. Next, get the word out. Paws.org has a downloadable PDF flyer (www.paws.org/resources/reunitea-found-pet/) that you can use to post your own found sign and add a contact email or number for the owner to call. Post a found notice on Facebook groups like Lost and Pound (www.facebook.com/lostandpound), which focus on lost pets. Chances are, you’ll locate the owner locally, but getting the word out as far and as wide as possible will help reunite that cat with its owner. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Taking a Tetanus Vaccine With an Allergy Requires Careful Monitoring ---
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
Accepting New Patients.
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was told by my doctor that I need a tetanus booster shot, but when I was 17, I cut my foot and needed stitches. I was told then that I was allergic to the tetanus shot, so they gave me penicillin instead. Of course, that was a long time ago, since I’m now 81 years old. How could they have determined I was allergic to the shot, and is that even reliable? Can I be tested now? Or do I even need to be tested? -- M.N. ANSWER: Reactions to vaccines are common, but they were much more common 64 years ago, when the purity of vaccines was far less than what it is now. One reaction that was common in the 1950s is called an Arthus reaction, which causes painful swelling at the injection site within a few hours -- the worst swelling usually occuring around 24 hours later, and then slowly decreasing. You are unlikely to get that type of allergic reaction because of better vaccines, and because it has been so many years since you’ve taken the vaccine. Very few people get anaphylactic reactions. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening condition, which often starts with skin symptoms such as hives or swelling; respiratory symptoms such as nasal congestion, discharge or the sensation of the throat closing; gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain; and cardiovascular symptoms such as dizziness and fainting. Any history of anaphylaxis prevents you from getting the same trigger (vaccine or medication) again, if it can be helped. Only a careful history of your symptoms at the time of the allergic reaction you had can provide an answer on which type of reaction it was. Blood testing for allergic reactions is not 100% reliable. If you haven’t had a tetanus vaccine in over 60 years, the decision to get one now really is a judgment call based on your likelihood of exposures. If you do a lot of gardening or hiking, it may be worthwhile to give you a vaccine with careful monitoring. If you were to develop a tetanus-prone wound, such as a deep wound that comes into contact with soil or manure, you would be recommended tetanus immunoglobulin as well as a tetanus vaccine. Penicillin alone is not effective in preventing tetanus: Meticulous wound cleaning is critical, in addition to the shots.

The Air Pollution Control District of Santa Barbara County in California notes that gasoline vapors include a variety of toxic substances, including benzene. Benzene is an air pollutant that adversely affects the central nervous system, the respiratory tract and the immune system. Modern automobiles now click when the gas tank is full and it’s vital that drivers avoid adding any more gas after they hear that click. Drivers may be accustomed to topping off after the click, but doing so can affect the vapor recovery system in a car. That system is designed to keep toxic chemicals like benzene out of the air. Topping off can needlessly expose drivers and their passengers to benzene, which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services considers a carcinogen, or cancer-causing chemical.

S E V RA Thank You I just want to thank the sweet little girl who presented me with a delicious box of cookies and beautiful card in the Wegman’s parking lot on Rte 31. That was such a surprise and genuine act of love. It was such a perfect gift as our car wouldn’t start and I was experiencing a bit of nausea from the chemo I have been receiving. Not only did she give me the lovely box of cookies, but she and her mother found someone who could help us get our car started. I hope they read this because it meant so very much to me. I was kind of in shock at the time and didn’t get to express how much it meant. I just went home and cried! There are many good people in this world and that sweet little girl and her mom are a shining example of God’s love. Thank you for renewing my faith. I will definitely pass on the love you gave me. Trunk or treat at the Elks A shout out to the Elks Lodge #24! In this day and age when we adults have to teach our children to be wary of others, you showed up big time! You did an awesome job for the kids on Saturday, Oct.22. Each car, with their thought out decorations and friendly greetings from the adults, made my grandchildren feel so welcome! You were so in the spirit of what Halloween is about; the children! Thank you! What have I missed I grew up many years ago, married and raised a family. I taught my children to love God, treat people with kindness and respect and not to judge others because you do not walk in their shoes, even if you disagree with their opinions. I rode behind a car with a bumper sticker which stated, “I vote my faith ----- ----“. What have I missed in all these years? What religion teaches ridiculing others who disagree with your opinion? Verbally or physically attacking others? And that infidelity is OK? What have I missed?
Thank you, Officer I recently went to Krown Undercoating in East Rochester to have my car undercoated. I met a younger man waiting for work on his truck in the lounge room. He commented on my Navy veteran hat and thanked me for my service. I asked him where he worked and he said he worked for the city of Rochester. I asked if it was inside or outside work. He said he was a cop and he was going in for the afternoon shift. After further discussions he said that he worked in the Clinton Ave. area of Rochester. After a few minutes, he was called away because his truck was finished. A few minutes later I was also called to get my car. When I got to the front desk they said that the last gentleman paid my $150 bill. I was blown away because I am used to paying my own way. I ended up paying it forward for another person having a truck undercoated. I really appreciated this very kind gesture from this officer and thought that it was worthy of a public thank you because police are getting a lot of negative publicity. A shout out! My local village did a trunk or treat for the first time this year and I heard it was pretty successful. I love hearing all the positivity coming from small town's activities and upgrades!
Ignoring a 4 way stop sign On the morning of Oct. 25 at 6:50 am I left my parked car across from my cousin’s house to babysit. Before I could get across the road, a car came to the stop sign, never stopped, sped up around the corner and nearly hit me. He quickly veered around me but was too close for comfort and never slowed down.

Honoring our Community’s Military Veterans Display at East Bloomfield Historical Society BY K A I T L I N D O N N A N
W
alking along the display case and exhibits of the East Bloomfield Historical Society places its visitors back in time, with a focus on local individuals and their hand in history. Dating back to World War II, the displays feature uniforms, photos, and more, allowing visitors to work their way through the years and various conflicts local servicemen and women were involved in, just in time for Veterans Day. “We have uniforms, flags, photos, a WAV uniform, and more,” said Judi Stewart, a historian at the East Bloomfield Historical Society. “We also have two sealed trunks and are opening them some 60 years later to a treasure trove of artifacts.” Cheryl Walters, an East Bloomfield History Society Trustee, is spearheading the exhibit, and through a series of interviews and compiling biographies of military experience, stories will put visitors in Pearl Harbor on boats, sitting in Hyde Park with Winston Churchill, and even delve into moments in Vietnam. “When you can put their biographies with the uniforms of individual people, suddenly visitors can really see what their family members did, and that is such a rich, wonderful experience,” Stewart said. “Cheryl has been in contact with families who have members who fought in or went to war. People really want their family members represented here.”
Another artifact recently acquired by the East Bloomfield History Society is an unpublished book entitled A Promise Kept, written by Sgt. Wayne Raulerson and his niece, Dr. Melissa Call, by Sgt. Henry “Hank” Trickey. Written about the Battle of Hamburger Hill in Vietnam from May 10th-20th, 1969, A Promise Kept documents a platoon’s experience in combat and a promise that whoever survived would visit their fallen brothers’ graves. Sgt. Raulerson did just that, seeking out his camrades’ families and leaving a quarter on each of his fallen brothers’ headstones. “A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldier’s family know someone stopped by to pay their respects,” said Stewart. “If you leave a penny, it means you visited. A nickel means you trained at boot camp together and a dime means you served together. A quarter is significant because it means you were there when that solider was killed.” A Promise Kept tells the story of soldiers killed in action or MIA, sharing their last words and giving them closure. Sgt. Raulerson wrote his story at the behest of his niece and, through Sgt. Trickey, donated a copy of his book to the East Bloomfield Historical Society in honor of Army Specialist Four Joseph Williams of West Bloomfield, NY, who was killed in action at Hamburger Hill on May 18, 1969.

Sgt. Trickey, a Bloomfield native and good friend of Sgt. Raulerson, is a former member of the 101st Airborne Division, the “Screaming Eagles”, and Second Battalion-502nd Infantry and was stationed in the A Shau Valley during the Vietnam War. “I remember when the Vietnam War was taking place,” said Stewart. “The conflicts we’ve had tend to feel far away and abstract, but physically being able to see what took place in the past connects it more with reality. The exhibit tells a story, and that is important.” Today, many veterans still do not wish to discuss their experiences in combat and what they’ve endured. “We still have people coming back without the support they need. We do not always pay tribute to these people and thank them like we should.” “We have so many Veterans who have never talked about their experiences with their family members,” Walters said. “We need to reach out to them, and the younger generation needs to know what happened. More people thank Veterans now than they did when they came back from Vietnam.” Walters also states people need to learn more about all service members involved. “We do not know a lot about the women in service; they (and medics) were right out there in the combat area with the soldiers. They saved numerous lives. What they did was not for nothing.” “Honoring our Community’s Military” will run between now and Veterans Day, showcasing over 40 uniforms from WWII to present, over 70 biographies of community soldiers, military artifacts including service medals, helmets, field and personal gear, letters to home, photographs, and other memorabilia. The East Bloomfield Historical Society will be hosting a luncheon on November 10th for all local Veterans free of charge. Sgt. Henry “Hank” Trickey will also host a speech at the Bloomfield Central School auditorium on November 10th at 7:00pm with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend. For question or more info. on the East Bloomfield Historical Society, call (585) 657-7244 or visit www.ebhs1838.org.

Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.

DID YOU KNOW? According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
