MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 4, 1928, “Dapper Dan” Hogan, a St. Paul, Minnesota, saloonkeeper and mob boss, is killed when someone plants a car bomb under the floorboards of his new Paige coupe. The first car bomb was a horse-drawn-wagon bomb that exploded in 1920 outside the J.P. Morgan Company’s offices in New York City. Tis the Season ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There actually aren’t “57 varieties” of Heinz ketchup, and never were. Company founder H.J. Heinz thought his product should have a number, and he just happened to like 57. * Cataract surgery was possible as early as the 6th century B.C. * Barbie’s physical appearance was inspired by a German doll named Bild Lilli, created in 1952 and based on a high-end call girl named Lilli who was featured in the comic strip “Bild-Zeitung.” She was sold as an adult novelty in bars and tobacco shops -- definitely not as a children’s toy. Barbie inventor Ruth Handler saw the doll while vacationing in Europe and brought it home. * Sunsets on Mars are blue. * Mob boss Vincent Gigante would wander around New York in his bathrobe to convince the police he was insane, and thus avoid capture.

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor. HANDYMEN/WOMEN
WAYS TO REPURPOSE DRESSERS One of the benefits to becoming a skilled do-it-yourselfer is the chance to embrace projects that can breathe new life into objects that others might designate for the trash or donation pile. Renovating such items can save money and provide an entirely different purpose for the object. After upgrading design styles or moving, there’s a good chance the average homeowner has a spare dresser or chest of drawers he or she may no longer use. Repurposing such furniture can make for an enjoyable weekend DIY project. With a change of color, removal of drawers or a few minor modifications, dressers can be transformed in many different ways. Before discarding an old dresser, think of all the ways it can be transformed into another useful piece of furniture.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago. Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.
Commercial/Residential • Best Rates WHAT SMALL BUSINESSES CAN DO TO ENGAGE THEIR COMMUNITIES Offer your space. Another way business owners can engage their communities is by offering their spaces for community-based events. For example, business owners with ample parking lots can offer those lots as registration sites for charity 5Ks or other events that can utilize large and open outdoor spaces. This approach addresses a community need and draws a crowd of locals to your establishment, thus increasing the chances they will patronize the business during and after the event.

The transparent haze which rests upon the mountain-top at noon,— the calmness in the air, and the clearness of the sky, now have a most mysterious influence upon the heart. The “still small voice” of nature makes us thoughtful; and seems to invite us to think upon the swiftness with which our days are passing away. How often at such an hour, have I been startled by the beating of my own heart! And the sunsets of Autumn,—are they not gorgeous beyond description? more so than the brightest dreams of poetry? ~Charles Lanman, “The Dying Year,” 1840

WHY SHOP SMALL & LOCAL? The money you spend has a greater impact on your community, and ultimately you, when you spend it locally. For every $100 you spend, $68 recirculates and remains local, versus $43 when you spend online or at a national chain.* A local business is able to provide a product or service that is backed by care, concern, hard work and dedication that you just can’t always get from a corporation.

DOWN HOME APPLE PIE POPCORN Yield: 10 cups 3 tablespoons melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 8 cups popped popcorn 1 cup dried apple chips, broken into large pieces 1/4 cup toffee bits
585-406-1842 INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.
Heat oven to 300 F. Whisk melted butter with vanilla. Toss brown sugar with cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. Toss popcorn with butter mixture. Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar mixture. Stir. Transfer to baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle apple chips and toffee bits over top. Bake 15 minutes, or until toffee bits start to melt. Cool before serving. Tip: Add chopped pecans for extra crunch. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Here’s a Tip On internet memes, they call them “life hacks,” simple tricks to save you perhaps time, money or simply frustration. Here’s mine: Place a bowl near your entryway. Place your keys in the bowl when you come home. They stay there until you leave. No more lost keys. Now more life hacks for your tip file. -- JoAnn Put a dryer fabric softener sheet on the back of a fan. It sticks and will distribute a fresh scent through your room. -- T.I. via email Put an apple in the potato bag to keep them from growing buds. Check often. -- E.W. in Oregon Sharpen your scissors by cutting through aluminum foil. All you have to do is fold a piece over on itself and use your dull scissors to cut strips. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
ppy Jumping puppy sing is embarassing his owner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time someone comes to visit or says hello at the park, my puppy, Jake, jumps up and tries to lick their face. It’s embarrassing, and I don’t know how to stop it. Can you help? -- Sean in Providence, Rhode Island DEAR SEAN: Jumping up is a common problem for dog owners (for dogs, not so much; they love it). So much so that it’s one of the first things a trainer addresses with an owner. What you’ll need to do is to improve Jake’s overall response to commands as well as train him not to jump on people. Here’s how you do it, step by step: 1. Train the “sit,” “stay” and “come here” commands every day, at home and at the park. Teach him to walk on the leash calmly at your side. 2. Work with a companion who will ring the doorbell from outside, while you command Jake to sit after the bell sounds. 3. Put Jake on a leash. Answer the door to the companion; when Jake tries to jump up, tug the leash once and command him to sit. Remember to use positive reinforcement during training -- lots of praise, with a treat when he follows a command correctly. Avoid negative enforcement like scolding, yelling or hauling on the leash. Jake will not be perfectly behaved for some time; you should keep his leash attached at home when you expect visitors. If he gets overexcited when a visitor arrives and he won’t sit, take him to his crate or another room until he calms down. Even after he masters the training and is better behaved at home and on the leash, you’ll need to train him regularly so that he doesn’t slip back into his jumping-up habit.

334-2993 TIPS TO FIND THE RIGHT LAWYER
Recognize what you need. Lawyers specialize in many different areas of the law, so finding the right lawyer is not a one-size-fits-all venture. Someone who needs help with estate planning will be looking for a different lawyer than someone seeking a personal injury specialist. Individuals are urged to identify which services they need and then narrow their search to include only those lawyers who specialize in providing them.

Colony Lane Circle of Lights: A Tradition of Peace, Love, and Joy BY SUZIE WELLS
I
n the quiet neighborhood of Colony Lane, a festive spectacle has been lighting winter nights for nearly three decades. The Colony Lane Circle of Lights, a dazzling display of Christmas and Hanukkah decorations, has become a beloved tradition for both residents and visitors. Nancy Sullivan Flynn, a long-time resident and one of the enthusiastic participants, shares insights into the history, inspiration, and community spirit behind this radiant celebration. For about 30 years, the six homes in the Colony Lane Circle have been participating in the holiday extravaganza. What started as simple decorations evolved into a “bit of a friendly neighborly contest” and “a light circus,” as more families joined in the merriment. Nancy, having lived in the neighborhood off and on for 60 years, reminisces about the early days and the evolution of this vibrant tradition. All six homes in the circle currently participate, with each family illuminating their homes and the five tall maple trees in the center of the circle. The process begins in early December, Nancy says, with every house aglow by mid-December. Even the one home that initially hesitated eventually joined the radiant circle, contributing to the brilliance that defines Colony Lane during the holiday season. When asked about the motivation behind the elaborate displays, Nancy’s response is simple yet profound: “To bring peace, love, and joy.” The inspiration for the beautiful arrays comes from the joy of driving around and admiring Christmas lights. Last year, Nancy says a family trip to Rahway Drive left a lasting impression, inspiring her daughter to gift Nancy’s husband, Rob, Light-o-Rama gift cards so they could acquire five of the snowflakes, a new addition to their ever-growing display. The decorations may change from year to year, but some elements remain constant. Gary Smith’s carousel continues to be a fan favorite. Nancy says, “If that were not put out, I think we would have protests.” This year, Flynn Power Washing professionally wrapped the five trees within the circle, adding a touch of elegance. Technological advancements, such as a projector and a movie screen, have replaced a 20-foot-tall Santa and snowman lost to high wind rips and motor malfunctions. “There’s always something new,” Nancy says. The motivation behind this dazzling display is purely communitydriven, especially for children of all ages. Despite Nancy (aka selfproclaimed Grinch)’s suggestions to scale back, her husband, Rob (aka Mr. Christmas, obsessed with new technology and computer-driven displays) as well as the neighbors persist in making the display bigger and better each year. The joy on the faces of visitors, especially when they reminisce about visiting the Circle of Lights as children, is the greatest reward for their efforts, Nancy admits.
decided to support RHAFT each December, accepting non-perishable donations for the pantry to help channel the community’s generosity towards those facing food insecurity, embodying the true spirit of the season. The neighborhood’s goal is simple: to be a conduit for good. Whether people donate or not, the essence lies in spreading joy and goodwill. The holiday season, for Nancy and her neighbors, is about coming together as a community to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Amidst the twinkling lights and festive displays, one of Nancy’s favorite parts is the arrival of the Calogeros, friends who come each Friday and Saturday evening as Mr. and Mrs. Santa, along with an elf (neighbor Lynnie Smith), who helps park folks in the driveways when the families want to visit with Santa. This year, Buzz (Rob Flynn) and Woody (Michael Calogero), Elf (Sean McCormick) Mickey, Minnie, and Elmo are also available for pictures with visitors. Nancy explains that when these volunteers finish in the circle at 8pm, they come in and Nancy has a hot dinner ready for them. They share moments of warmth and camaraderie, “debate the best Christmas movies ever, and just spend time together because the BEST part of the holidays is spending time with family and friends.” As the Colony Lane Circle of Lights brightens the neighborhood, Nancy sends a heartfelt message to the community: “We wish you peace, love, and joy!” The tradition, fueled by the passion of neighbors such as Nancy and Rob, serves as a reminder that the true magic of the holiday season lies in coming together, spreading happiness, and creating lasting memories for generations to come.
This year, the Colony Lane Circle of Lights is not just about illuminating the night; it’s also about illuminating lives. Nancy says every year, folks would knock on their doors and offer money to help with electric bills, but the neighbors all declined. As a Girl Scout leader, Nancy says her troops annually adopt a family through RHAFT, the Rush-Henrietta Area Food Terminal, so the neighborhood has

Vitamins for Macular Degeneration Coincide With New Cramps ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been told at the age of 70 that I am in the early stages of the eye disease macular degeneration. The doctor told me to take PreserVision AREDS 2 vitamins. He said that I will be taking them for the rest of my life. I started them immediately, and a few nights later, I started having severe left leg cramps to the point where I woke out of a sound sleep to jump out of bed and shake off the cramp. Is this typical? -- C.L. ANSWER: For the dry form of age-related macular degeneration, the AREDS and AREDS2 vitamins are the usual treatment. Although they are not a cure, they do slow progression of the disease. My experience with these has been that they almost never cause side effects, and muscle cramping is not a reported side effect by the manufacturer. The timing, however, certainly is suspicious. You can try stopping them for a few days, then restarting them to see if the cramps are truly affected by the vitamins. If they are, you have two choices. The first is to deal with cramps the same way that people who get them at night for no particular reason deal with it, which is by getting regular moderate exercise and stretching the calf and hamstring muscles before bed. Having weight on the toes is a trigger for many people, so very light bed covers that aren’t tucked in can be surprisingly helpful. I’ve had a few readers come up with devices to keep all weight off of their toes in bed. Your second option is to discuss an alternative with your eye professional. The AREDS and AREDS2 formulas were shown to be helpful, but some eye professionals only choose a few components of the formula.
RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.

Seasonal Tree A big thank you to the person(s) who decorate the evergreen tree at the corner of Cheese Factory and Quaker Meetinghouse Roads in Honeoye Falls. We always look forward to seeing the latest decorations as they change to celebrate the current holiday/season. You have consistently brightened this corner for years and have brought a smile to many faces. Please know your hard work is appreciated very much!
Merr Christma!
Don’t Eat Then To the person who felt the need to bash your local farmers over….. mud…. you reamed out farmers over mud. Farmers are under more than enough pressure already, with an alarming percentage of American farms going out of business year after year after year. Only a small percentage consistently make a profit. If you want them to get out and pick up dirt, expect to pay them more for it. If you still don’t get it, grow your own. Quit being entitled, eat the food they grew for you, and be grateful. More Being Added I see more junk and vehicles are being added to the Historical Area? I am not sure why this is OK. I know of many people that have contacted the village about this area. Is anything being done? As some residents are afraid to say anything because of the connections involved. When people are driving thru the area this is what they are seeing. Do we want this to be seen as a junk area? Are there any regulations regarding storing vehicles, boats, RV’s, containers? When the village board is asked, they say they will look into it, but never give a response on why this area is OK to be treated as a junkyard. Some residents take pride in their surroundings and village, while others say they do, but take advantage of their so-called liberties. Can we please clean up the historical site? Garbage is garbage no matter who or what it is!!

GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished. Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity. Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed. Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week.

Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks. Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time. Page 25
