Embrace a “Secret Santa” exchange. Large families can save money by engaging in a Secret Santa exchange. Rather than asking each member of the family to buy gifts for one another, a Secret Santa exchange asks each participant to pick a name out of a hat and then only buy gifts for that person. This is a great way to save both money and time, and it saves participants from the potential hassle of returning gifts after the season.

DID YOU KNOW? As holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, retailers who use apps and mobile responsive websites to reach more customers may benefit by making a concerted effort to reach older shoppers. According to Nielsen’s Mobile Measurement, 26 percent of the more than 100 million mobile shoppers are 55 and older, while an additional 40 percent are between the ages of 25 and 44. Those figures might surprise some retailers who are quick to associate mobile shopping with digital-native Millennials. Nielsen’s Fourth-Quarter 2014 Mobile Multicultural Insights report even noted that Hispanics are more inclined to shop via mobile than non-Hispanic, white smartphone owners. Retailers may also be interested to know that more and more shoppers are turning to apps instead of websites to do their shopping. Between the fourth quarter of 2013 and the fourth quarter of 2014, Nielsen reports that 101.4 million smartphone users accessed a shopping app. By the fourth quarter of 2015, that figure had risen to 109.9 million users.

HOW TO MAKE GIFT WRAPPING EASIER Draw on plain gift boxes. Make your own “wrapped gifts” by drawing or stenciling on plain gift boxes if you’re short on time.

Holiday shopping season typically begins the day after Thanksgiving and extends all the way to Christmas Eve. While that’s a considerable amount of time for shoppers to find gifts for everyone on their shopping list, many people will still find themselves putting holiday shopping off until the last minute. In certain ways, last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever. Thanks to online retailers who can ship products overnight, men and women who delay their holiday shopping have more options at their disposal than they did before the arrival of the Internet. And unlike the days of yore when the best deals were largely exclusive to Black Friday, some shoppers find that competition between online retailers and traditional brick-and-mortar stores is so great that deals can be found regardless of when they begin shopping. But while waiting until the last minute to begin holiday shopping may not be as risky as it used to be, shoppers may still benefit by sticking to certain strategies so they can find the perfect gifts without breaking the bank.

A Visit from St. Nicholas BY CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave a lustre of midday to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer, With a little old driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the housetop the coursers they flew With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack. His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight— “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

a festive table on a dime

YOU

C AN

DO

IT!

Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.

Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.

Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.

Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.

Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat.

Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Experiment Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Take a stab at different napkin folding techniques and see what suits your fancy.

Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

Dogs mature at faster rates than human beings. While many have heard the rule that every human year equals seven dog years, the reality isn’t so cut and dry. Size and breed play roles in determining a dog’s age equivalent. According to the pets division of WebMD, the first year of life for a dog may be roughly equivalent to 15 years for a human. Dog food manufacturer Purina says that by its tenth year alive, a small, medium and large dog is 56, 60 and 66 in human years, respectively.

WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE Always use appropriate language. When using a mobile phone in public, refrain from peppering conversations with expletives or graphic language. Children may be nearby without your knowledge, but even if there are no young people in the immediate vicinity, your fellow adults likely don’t want to hear foul or graphic language.

Holiday celebrants employ holiday lights in various ways. Certain individuals may be content to hang lights on their Christmas trees and call their decorating complete. Others may get their holiday jollies by making sure each square inch of their home is covered in twinkling lights. Still, other people prefer the more subdued effect of lights framing one picture window of the house.

O’Neill’s NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Save the peel on oranges and grapefruits. You can toss them on a fire for a nice smell.

BENEFITS OF LED HOLIDAY LIGHTS Sturdiness: Because they’re made with epoxy lenses and not glass like traditional incandescent bulbs, LED holiday lights are less likely to break. That can be especially beneficial to people with pets who might bump into the family Christmas tree.

Magic Maze WHITE ––

* “When planning to visit my hometown for the holidays, I set aside a few hours to take the kids to the park or a nice playground. I message all my old friends and classmates with kids (Facebook is great for this) a few weeks ahead of time and let them know when I’ll be there. It’s great to catch up while the kids play, and even if no one shows up, we still have a fun break.” -- F.L. in California

* Make a holiday cheese ball simply: Combine a package of cream cheese with a cup of finely shredded cheese (your choice) and 1/3 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt. Form into a ball, roll in coating of your choice (dried fruit pieces, chopped nuts, spices, etc.) and chill. Wrap in a pretty cellophane bag and bring with pita chips, crackers or pretzels as a hostess gift. * “Wax drippings from candles can be scraped off of most hard surfaces with the side of a credit card.” -- T.E. in Kansas ●

* “When there are big family jobs to be done (like getting ready for the holidays), we write all the tasks down on slips of paper and put them in a hat. We take turns choosing tasks until all the paper is divvied out. Sometimes we trade, but we all get a fair chore list.” -V.O. in Oregon

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Dumping Syndrome and Obesity

Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.

Celebrating 20 Years

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend was given a test to see how long food stayed in her stomach after eating. She was told that it stayed only a short time before continuing its journey, a much shorter time than the average person. This was given as a reason for her obesity, that she experienced hunger sooner than most people. Does this really happen, and is there a way for her to manage it so that she can lose weight? -- G.J. ANSWER: A gastric emptying study is usually used to look for delayed gastric emptying, also called gastroparesis. It can be the result of several different types of nerve diseases, but especially diabetes. An abnormally rapid gastric emptying is also called dumping syndrome, and is often a problem after some types of gastric bypass surgeries. I did find a paper from the 1980s suggesting that obese people have shorter gastric emptying times. This was confirmed in a trial from 2015 looking at the diabetes drug exenatide (Byetta), which is sometimes used to help people lose weight, even if they do not have diabetes. Interestingly, exenatide was more likely to cause people to lose weight if they had faster gastric emptying times. I do not mean to suggest that fast gastric emptying is the only reason for your friend’s (or anyone else’s) weight problems. Obesity is a complex problem with no single cause or solution in most people. I am glad you wrote. I did not know about this research before, and it may be worth it for your friend to discuss a trial of exenatide with her doctor.

Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

MICROCEPHALY BROUGHT INTO THE LIMELIGHT Conception and childbirth are miracles of life. While parents experience many joys during pregnancy and delivery, they must discuss potentially uncomfortable conversations that need to be addressed. This includes the potential that babies will born with birth defects. Over the last year, microcephaly, a rare but serious disability, has garnered substantial attention. Microcephaly is a neurological condition in which an infant’s head is significantly smaller than the heads of other children of the same age and sex, advises The Mayo Clinic. The condition is typically the result of the brain developing abnormally in the womb or not growing as it is supposed to after birth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says microcephaly can be an isolated condition, or it can occur in combination with other major birth defects. Depending on the severity of the condition, children with microcephaly can face any number of symptoms. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, symptoms of microcephaly include impaired cognitive development, delayed motor functions, dwarfism, seizures, difficulties with balance, and other neurological abnormalities. Although microcephaly is rare, according to the National Birth Defects Prevention Network, it may become more common. That’s because microcephaly has been linked to mothers who were exposed to the Zika virus while pregnant. Exposure to in utero substance abuse, as well as genetic or chromosomal issues, also can lead to microcephaly. Dr. Nassim Zecavati, an assistant professor of pediatrics and neurology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, says essentially anything that slows down brain growth in the womb or causes a severe deprivation of oxygen and blood flow before, during or after delivery can be problematic. Unfortunately, no treatment exists to return a child’s head and brain to normal size. Instead, treatment focuses on reducing the impact associated with neurological disabilities and subsequent physical disabilities. Early childhood intervention programs that include speech, physical and occupational therapy may be part of a child’s course of treatment. Certain medications can be prescribed to help with seizures or hyperactivity. Thanks to its link to the Zika virus, microcephaly has garnered considerable attention over the last year-plus. Though still rare, microcephaly is something expecting parents and couples planning to have children should familiarize themselves with.

DID YOU KNOW? Men have a small amount of breast tissue, and that means they can be affected by breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, men’s breast tissue has ducts, but only few, if any, lobules. That’s because men do not have enough female hormones to promote the growth of breast cells. Breast cancer can be separated into several types based on what the cancer cells look like under the microscope. They can be in-situ, meaning noninvasive or pre-invasive. They also may be invasive types that have spread to the ducts in the breast tissue. Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among men than among women. Only about 2,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men this year. But men who feel lumps or other anomalies in the area around the nipple should consult their physicians.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS

HANDY MAN HOME REPAIR

Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road.

585-802-1544 UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES

Raymond G. Cragle Sr.

Call or text today for a free quote!

(NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task.

585-478-3561

Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money. How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment. You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut • Noncombustible

To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Adult mayflies have no functional mouth. Because of this, they die of malnutrition. This is an evolutionary occurrence that happens so aging mayflies don’t pass on genetic defects to the next generation. * If you do a Google search on the word “askew,” the resulting content will tilt slightly to the right. * The color of Facebook is blue because Mark Zuckerberg is red-green colorblind. * Ever noticed how some mass-produced ballpoint pens, such as the Bic Cristal, have a hole in the cap? No? Well, in case you someday do, now you’ll know why -- it’s not just to prevent leaks, but choking as well. Lots of folks like to chew on pen lids, and in the event they accidentally swallow the cap, the hole ensures it won’t completely block their airway.

Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

Gingerbread is a broad term that can describe anything from a firm and crispy cookie to a moist, soft cake. Traditionally, gingerbread is seasoned with ginger, cloves, nutmeg, and other aromatic spices. Molasses and brown sugar counteract the spice with sweetness. North Americans have been baking gingerbread in various shapes or forms for more than 200 years, and the recipes even pre-date the American revolution. However, gingerbread dates back even further to the Shakespearean era, with The Bard having mentioned it in one of his plays. Gingerbread’s name can be trace to medieval England and once referred to any kind of preserved ginger. The term went on to reference ginger-flavored cakes in the 15th century, and gingerbread eventually became popular throughout the world. Even though gingerbread cakes and cookies have been made for centuries, Germans are often credited with creating gingerbread houses, according to Smithsonian. They were probably modeled after the witch’s candy cottage in the German fairy tale, “Hansel and Gretel.” Even though gingerbread can be made any time of year, it is particularly associated with the Christmas season, with gingerbread men and other fanciful shapes turning up on cookie platters.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “A well-educated mind will always have more questions than answers.” -- Helen Keller TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! REAL ESTATE

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Visiting Yap Dog Ruins Holidays DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My sisterin-law insists on bringing her yappy, ill-tempered lap dog, “Mitsi,” to our house every Christmas through New Year’s. Mitsi gets along with no one but her owner, frightens our two cats and barks at everyone in the house during dinner, nonstop. I love having my brother and his wife over, but Mitsi is making things hellish. How can I politely ask her to leave Mitsi in a kennel during visits? -- Barked Out in Birmingham DEAR BARKED OUT: I don’t know that there’s a way to tell your sisterin-law to leave her dog at home that would be taken well. Mitsi clearly is a full member of their family and travels with her. Can a compromise be reached instead? Ask her if Mitsi can be placed in a separate room during mealtimes while they are visiting. She’ll probably still bark, but at least it won’t be right in your ear. You also need to discuss how Mitsi is stressing out the cats. Sometimes people think it’s funny when a visiting dog chases the family pets around, but it’s not fun for those pets. It’s like having a schoolyard bully walk right into your home. Try to keep the discussion civil. Ultimately, you’ll have to decide what level of compromise to ask for in order to keep peace in your house, and you’ll have to be firm. Your sister-in-law takes her relationship with her dog seriously; she should respect your concerns as well. That discussion probably won’t be comfortable, but if Mitsi’s barking and bullying are making the holidays a living hell, you need to speak up. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Christmas Dinner Happens on the Sly The annual Christmas dinner at the senior center was a wonderful event, mostly because it didn’t happen at all. The original plan -- seniors sitting in a cold parking lot outside the center to eat food that would stay hot for maybe one minute -- was ditched by means of a petition to board members. That petition mentioned the absolute folly of the whole outdoor dining idea. The board’s second plan was to host the dinner indoors, but for only one-third the number of guests, with clear Plexiglas shields on the tables, which would interfere with conversation. There was a snap, an awakening, an audible collective click -- and the seniors said NO. The former recreation-center supervisor, who had quit after too many snarling meetings about yoga classes masked versus unmasked, was brought back to open the rec center. He’d fled to his cabin in the woods, tossing the keys to others, to sit out the insanity, at which point the town changed the locks. Once brought back, he quickly jimmied open the rec center door and installed a new lock, smiling the whole time. Organizers came together in secret with not a word said to senior-center board members (or the town council). Tables and chairs were borrowed. One of the town’s finer restaurants (the owner himself a senior) was coaxed into providing finger foods and drinks and two bartenders. A half dozen seniors who were in a band years ago regrouped to provide the music and play songs we actually knew. The annual Christmas dinner turned dance party was a major hit, and just what we needed after this long pandemic lockdown. We ate and we mingled and we drank and we laughed and we danced. And long after what should have been bedtime for most of us, we were still there dancing. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

GREAT GIFTS FOR SENIORS: TRAVEL GIFTS Many retirees love to travel, but not every senior has the means to take off for parts unknown. A 2013 survey from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® found that 25 percent of retirees admitted they wished they would have saved more for retirement travel. Holiday shoppers can light up seniors’ smiles by gifting travel gifts this holiday season. One idea is to transfer airline miles to an elderly loved one so he or she can get a free or discounted flight. If that’s not a possibility, consider some new luggage. ●

D id You Know ? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, w hich causes stiffness, sw elling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people w ith psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. W hile psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people betw een the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slow ly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Be careful, little eyes I love President Trump. You know what I hate? All the Biden flags and signs with FOUL language on them. I have a 9-yearold son and 6-year-old daughter who we are raising to be America-loving patriots. But when my daughter questions the meaning of the words on these flags, my blood boils. You do no service to our party or our innocent kids. You look uncouth and, yes, ignorant. Being a mom of kids in this insane world is hard enough without my own party letting me down. Please think of the little kids. Put yourself in the shoes of parents trying to protect innocence and decency.

S E V RA CMBB Raiders Coming from a “rival” school, I’ve just got to say how nice the people at the Football game in October were. They have an awesome facility. Lots of kids running around having fun and even the crew working in concessions were great. I’ve been to many schools we were playing against, and this one by far was the friendliest. You should be proud of your school and community.

Foreign aid correction To the person ranting about foreign aid to Israel at $10 million a day, your information is incorrect. The correct amount is approximately $3 million. I agree, still a lot of money, but my point is that if you are going to rant, please have your information correct.

Above & beyond The Humane Society of Livingston County would like to thank Dr. Ken Bedell and his staff at the Lima Veterinary Center for their outstanding service to us. He and his staff have gone above and beyond in their dealings with us. Whether it’s been dealing with an emergency or fitting in one more cat or kitten into their schedule, they are always friendly and willing to work with us for the betterment of Livingston County cats. We would not be able to do what we do without them, and we appreciate them tremendously.

Almost true The person who was lecturing on global warming started out okay, but then made the same mistake common to all the global warming believers including AOC and began blaming weather on global warming which meteorologists will tell you is not the case. They will know that the earth often goes through periods of temperature fluctuation. Previous to 50 years ago, how would we know if a polar cap melted? CA wildfires are the result of not doing proper forest management. Unlike global warming doomsayers, I am open to listening to ALL the science. We should work on things that are proven to cause global warming but not at the expense of our standard of living. Trust American ingenuity. Study carbon trapping instead of getting rid of gasoline engines with no real plan to replace them. Electric cars? CA’s power grid can’t meet the demands of their electric needs now, so how will they be able to charge the 14,894,912 cars currently registered in that state? Together we can find the answers! Pickup Spaces Why do stores place their pickup spaces as close to the store as possible? One [local store] in [local town] eliminated some handicap spots to install pickup spaces. If you are having your items delivered to your car, does it matter that the pickup spaces are close to the store? The pickup area could be at the back of the lot, and it wouldn’t matter to the customer. It is unfair to shoppers who need handicap spaces to have them moved so that people who stay in their cars can wait closer to the store.

“Yuletide” celebrates the birth of the Sun and also celebrates the “Mother” at the height of her “Greatness.” Pagans celebrate Yuletide in many ways; most will decorate a “Yuletide” tree, keep it in their homes until most of the leaves fall off, then burn the Yule log. In ancient Rome, the winter solstice was celebrated at the Feast of Saturnalia to honor Saturn, the god of agricultural bounty.

Can you draw the Winter Solstice Night Sky and Stonehenge? Stonehenge is one of the major structures associated with the Solstice, the other two being Newgrange and Maeshowe. Make sure to add lots of snowflakes and stars to showcase the night sky. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Anderson and Holden Receive 2021 Albert W. Hawk Award for Distinguished School Board Service BY MAGGIE FITZGIBBON

E

ach year, the Genesee Valley School Board Association (GVSBA) presents the Albert W. Hawk Award for Distinguished School Board Service to a current or former Board of Education member who has displayed outstanding contributions to public education and children in their community. This award reflects their tireless efforts to improve and enhance public education and the lives that they impact daily through school board service. The award is named for Albert W. Hawk, a longtime advocate for rural schools, and a member of both the Dansville Central Schools and the Genesee Valley BOCES Board of Education. Hawk also chaired many state and national school board committees and served as President of the New York State School Boards Association. Hawk’s legacy and his support for public education is visible to this day. His service has greatly inspired others. This year the Board of Directors of the GVSBA has named Timothy Anderson and Mary Ann Holden as the recipients of the 2021 award. Anderson and Holden are true examples of service and dedication to their communities. Anderson served on the Board of Education for the CaledoniaMumford Central School District for 12 years. First elected in 2009, he was an outstanding advocate for his school, community, and students. Anderson was also a member of the Town of Caledonia Board, the Recreation Committee, and an umpire for youth sports, and was the statistician for the Caledonia-Mumford/ByronBergen Football and Girls Basketball Programs. A well-respected umpire, Anderson was inducted into the Genesee Valley Umpires Association Hall of Fame in 2020. He was also a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus which served the St. Martin De Porres Parish. Timothy Anderson Often seen at sporting events, awards ceremonies and theatrical performances, Anderson showed that he cared deeply about the students and staff in his school and community. He also served on many school board committees and attended many area meetings and events.

Sadly, after a courageous battle with cancer, Anderson passed away on April 4, 2021. His impact on the community he served has been greatly missed. Holden has been a tireless, dedicated Dansville citizen for many years as she has served on many community boards. Holden has been on the Dansville School Board since 2002 and for the past 16 years, she’s served as President. She is also a past Genesee Valley BOCES Board of Education Member. Her commitment to public education has led her to be involved in many board committees as well as GVSBA Programs. Holden’s expertise in district finances has led to the fiscal security of Dansville Mary Ann Holden Central Schools, as well as, the passage of a $9.6 million school budget and an $8.2 million capital project less than one year apart. Ms. Holden is a Trustee of the Dansville Public Library. She sits on the local Planning Board and is an active member of the Holy Family Catholic Community. A solid supporter of the families and children in Dansville, Holden has shown that she is always ready, willing, and able to make tough decisions for her community. Her leadership has provided a solid foundation for the district, proving that she is indeed a wellrespected, well-spoken and integral part of the total Dansville community. The Genesee Valley School Board Association represents 22 Boards of Education within the Genesee Valley BOCES region.

Certain holiday images have been ingrained in the minds of the public. Coca-Cola’s smiling bearded Santa Claus, in his now universally recognized red coat, helped create a model from which all other Santas evolved. And an early 20th century artist and illustrator helped to establish the feelings of the Christmas season for millions with portraits featured on the covers of The Saturday Evening Post. Norman Rockwell was born in New York City in 1894 and dreamt of becoming an artist when he was young. Rockwell received his first commission at age 17 and illustrated for Boy’s Life, the monthly magazine of the Boy Scouts of America. In 1916, Rockwell was hired by The Saturday Evening Post. When Rockwell began working for the Post, his humorous and deadpan depictions of American life tugged at the heartstrings of the public - even if they weren’t so adored by art critics. Rockwell spent 47 years working for this iconic magazine. Rockwell produced paintings for the Post and other publications that depicted key images in American history, including Charles Lindbergh’s crossing of the Atlantic, the Moon Landing and World War II. However, some of Rockwell’s most beloved work pertains to his holiday scenes. Rockwell used real people as his models, and every detail in his reproduction paintings of photographs was fastidiously planned, say biographers. Over time, Rockwell’s paintings helped define an idealized vision of American life and Christmas celebrations. Even now people seek to emulate the merriment and magic exemplified in Rockwell’s imagery - from tired toy store clerks to a boy discovering Santa kissing his mom to the great holiday dinner. Rockwell produced 29 Christmas covers as well as greeting cards and other holiday scenes. The holiday season would not be the same without the work of artist Norman Rockwell. His influential images helped reflect a glorified version of American life and have helped to make the holiday season even more special for millions of people.
