MAKE HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXCURSIONS SPECIAL As they fulfill the social obligations of the holiday season, many people find themselves spending less time at home. Consumer Reports notes that individuals spend a great deal of time shopping for gifts come the holiday season. Americans engage in 15 hours of shopping on average, with women spending twice as long as their male counterparts (20 hours versus 10). In addition, the average person devotes 10 or more hours to wrapping and returning gifts. Holiday shopping can monopolize people’s time away from home during the months of November and December, and some shoppers wonder how they become so disconnected from other activities, including family time, that they cherish throughout the rest of the year. One way to tackle holiday shopping without sacrificing time with family and friends is to make holiday shopping a social event.

Popovers make a great addition to any brunch menu. Home cooks who want to get a little creative with their popovers can whip up a batch of “Popovers With Goat Cheese & Chile” from Linda Collister’s “Quick Breads” (Ryland, Peters & Small). Popovers With Goat Cheese & Chile Serves 4 to 6 1 cup milk (not fat-free) 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon wheat germ 3 extra-large eggs 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 5 to 6 ounces goat cheese 1 medium-hot chile (or to taste), finely chopped 12-cup muffin tin, or flexible molds set on a baking sheet, well buttered - Preheat the oven to 425 F. - Put the milk, flour, salt, wheat germ, eggs, and melted butter in a food processor and run the machine until you get a smooth batter. - Cut the goat cheese into 12 fairly even pieces. - Pour the batter into the cups in the muffin tin so each cup is about half full. Add a piece of cheese to each and a little of the chopped chile. - Bake immediately for 25 minutes. Then, without opening the door, turn down the heat to 350 F and bake for an additional 15 minutes. Serve straight from the oven.

National Award Winning Paper

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

The Best Leash-Collar Combo for Your Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’d like to upgrade my Lab’s collar and leash, because he’s pretty powerful and tugs against his collar all the time until he starts to choke. What do you recommend? Sara B., via email DEAR SARA: I’m a fan of harnesses, especially for dogs that like to pull at the leash. A harness fits around a dog’s front legs and torso, and has a top strap with a clip ring for the leash located between the dog’s shoulders. It’s secure and sturdy, it stays on your dog, and he won’t injure himself trying to pull away from you. (You can also keep his collar on, mainly so his license tag is always visible.) Some dog harnesses come with a sturdy handle sewn onto the top strap. It’s not so much for picking up the dog but is an additional point of control if you’re worried about your dog bolting or jumping up on other people. For the long term, of course, your Lab needs to improve his basic obedience skills. He should never tug at his leash, but should walk next to you. Putting him into a harness will give you more control. Dogs tend to respond more often to a tug on the harness, which applies pressure at several points rather than just around the neck. Those multiple contact points disperse pressure around the dog’s torso so that he remains comfortable and uninjured, reducing anxiety and hopefully making him more receptive to training commands. Harnesses are not as cheap as collars, but they’re well worth the investment, especially when dealing with a strong, independent thinker like your Lab. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

These services are joyful expressions of faith, music and community spirit. But Christmas mass is not the only time to head to church. During Advent, the four-week period preceding Christmas, Catholics prepare and repent. Advent calendars help count down the days until Christmas.

585-548-7329 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Racing greyhounds aren’t predators; many just love to chase things. As The Greyhound Project notes, retired racing greyhounds have been trained to chase lures. That love of the chase may lead some to believe greyhounds are natural predators, but that’s not the case. Many greyhounds just love to run, and some retired racing greyhounds really love to run. However, when they’re no longer racing and have fully adapted to a new home, many greyhounds become disinterested in chasing.

CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history. Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits.

Los Flamboyanes High Rise Apartments, Townhouses & Studios • 1, 2, 3 & 4 bedrooms • Community room & laundry facility

While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.

Puzzle Answers This Week DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky.

S E V RA Pavilion girls volleyball A great Pavilion Central School community and alumni has supported and contributed to our Pavilion Girls Volleyball Team! A big thank you to the Pavilion Central School administration, teachers, staff, and students that came and cheered us on. While winning the Class D Sectional Title and the Far West Regional, we had the largest crowd, always giving the team a standing ovation at match point. They also followed the team to Glens Falls for the State Tournament. Even though we had to travel the furthest of the Class D teams, we had the largest crowd with the loudest and proudest fans. Everyone in the Pavilion Central Community made an amazing experience even better. Thank you!

Wallet return On November 9th, my wallet dropped out of my car when I went to go into Target in Batavia. I didn't realize I had dropped it. A man saw it had been dropped and brought it to the desk intact. A relative working at the desk knew me and brought it to me. I appreciate your integrity more than you know, and I am very grateful! - A very thankful neighbor

School violence I have been hearing rumors of [local] school district having a bullying problem again. My two great grand children, plus other kids are being bullied, as well. My one great grandson was pushed into a "pond." Why are these bullies being tolerated again? My granddaughter went through this school district in the 1980s, and she was beaten on her head. Why? If you have surveillance cameras, please review them. Stop the violence. This behavior is not acceptable! Manchin makes sense Joe Manchin stood up against his own Democratic party. This new bill will cost a lot, although [some] say it costs nothing. The biggest polluters in the world did not attend the Climate Summit, and Sleepy Joe lived up to his name. Shutting down America's coal, natural gas and oil industries kills our jobs and our independence from other countries. If we don't produce it for ourselves, other countries will produce it for us. This does not help America or the climate. Hope you enjoy the price of gas and your upcoming heating bills. Pull together If there were ever a time in the history of our world that everyone needs to be pulling together, it is now. But it seems that instead of pulling together, we in the United States seem to be finding more reasons to find fault with one another. Neither the far right nor the far left are where we should be. With all the problems Covid has caused because of businesses having to temporarily close down all over the world, we are experiencing major supply shortages. Many companies find themselves forced to raise their prices to stay in business. Things will eventually get better, and if we all work together, it will happen sooner rather than later.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

It was one of those perfect English autumnal days which occur more frequently in memory than in life. The rich colours of grass and earth were intensified by the mellow light of a sun almost warm enough for spring... ~P.D. James, A Taste for Death

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Christmas Dinner Moves Indoors Those in power at the senior center have now decreed that we will have the annual Christmas dinner indoors instead of out in the parking lot. This flash of brilliance came after they received a number of responses that were more along the lines of “Are you crazy?” rather than the expected RSVPs. The original plan was to spread tables across the asphalt outside, with culinary arts students bringing food and drink out from the kitchen in the center, and to park a bunch of senior citizens outside in the cold in the middle of December in New England to eat that dinner. Saner heads prevailed, I hear, when a retired nurse posed the question: “And just how many of our members do you suppose are going to end up in the hospital after two hours of exposure to outdoor December temperatures?” The student chef, I also hear, claimed that he’d been asked to provide a “hot dinner” and wasn’t thrilled about having to work for hours over hot stoves only to have his creations subjected to icy temperatures. As of now, the dinner will be indoors with fewer tables. Santa will still arrive via limo, and the high-school chorus will still sing (although they’ll be out in the hall as there is no place for all of them in the actual room). Watch this space, however, because I hear there is a movement afoot (as well as a petition from members) to ditch the sit-down dinner completely and instead have a standup event with finger foods arrayed on tables and a cash bar over in the corner. “We want to see our friends and mingle” has been the cry (as well as what is written on the petition). “We want some good dance music” penciled in one signer. In a perfect world, the powers-that-be would have asked the members first. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The Season was waning to its close. The gardens showed but little of the ravages of autumn as yet. The noble avenues of trees were still in their glory of fulness and expansive verdure; although here and there a few fallen leaves seemed to have fluttered down to earth as premature heralds of decay. The later flowers were gorgeous in their many-coloured splendour, though their earlier sisters had already lived the best of their lives, and now drooped their heads, as if to hide their blighted charms.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

It works! * For every side dish that requires extra preparation time, plan for one or two that don’t. For instance, if you are preparing a casserole with many ingredients and complicated instructions, serve a package of vegetables that require nothing more than steaming. * Wine buyers tip: Experts say to multiply the number of adult guests by a half bottle to determine how many bottles of wine to buy for your holiday gathering. Add an additional glass of wine per guest for every hour after dinner you expect guests to linger. * How to peel potatoes: Boil whole potatoes with skin on for 20-30 minutes (depending on the size of your potatoes). Twisted Colon Is a Surgical Emergency

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

---

Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

DEAR DR. ROACH: This past weekend, during my son’s wedding festivities, I experienced a sigmoid volvulus. Doctors recommended surgery, but I opted for a colonoscopy, which was performed successfully. Thank goodness. I was immediately a new woman, and no one would have dreamed I went through this emergency. The surgeons recommended I have my sigmoid colon removed in order to decrease the risk of recurrence. Ideally, this would happen as soon as possible. What could have prompted the sigmoid volvulus? Is it an absolute that I must have my sigmoid colon removed? What are the odds of it recurring? If I do need the surgery, how can I best prepare for it, and what are the side effects? -- M.B. ANSWER: A volvulus is the twisting of a hollow structure in the body around its long axis (imagine holding one end of a sock in each hand and flipping the middle so it twists on itself). The sigmoid colon is the most common location. It is a surgical emergency, as tissue death and gangrene may follow. The biggest risk factor for volvulus is chronic constipation, but some people just have anatomy that predisposes them to get a volvulus. Surgery is the definitive treatment, but colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy may be used to untwist the colon; medical professionals use the term “reduce.” However, your surgeon was right that you are at risk for this happening again. In those people with a history of volvulus, 50% to 60% will get another, and if you have two, the recurrence rate is even higher. For a person in generally good health, I would recommend definitive surgery to prevent recurrence of volvulus. There are no specific instructions to prepare for surgery, beyond taking good care of yourself and following your surgeon’s instructions about your medications (if any). Any abdominal surgery has the risk of bleeding, infection and adhesions (connections between loops of bowel that can lead to painful obstruction later); however, these risks are quite small.

Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.

Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley: Giving Back to the Community in a Unique Way B Y E L A H A H A S H M AT U L L A H

G

iving back to the community has long been a way of life for many. This includes helping those in need with food, clothing, housing, and even utility bills to coming up with a unique perspective on how to help families and individuals who are in need of aid. We all know that cleaning and stay hygienic is very important, but did you know that there are people in our community who cannot afford such luxury? Yes, it is a luxury that most of us take for granted. Thankfully, a local solution to this problem exists: the Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley. The Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley (HBB) is a program that helps local families in need with supplies for which they do not receive assistance from government programs such as SNAP (a federal program to help families in need with food) and HEAP (a federal program to help families in need with utility bills). These programs do not help families with paper products like paper towels and toilet paper, or other household cleaning products and personal hygiene products. That is where HBB steps in. HBB helps local families and individuals in need with household cleanliness and personal hygiene items.

program, particularly Faith Fellowship which has consistently partnered with Grace & Truth to hold these events. HBB exists to “meet a need,” said Dudek. It helps local families and individuals in need not to have to worry about how they are going to keep their house, themselves, and their children clean. This worry can affect a person’s will to move forward as well as their physical and mental health. So, the HBB is there to help.

Amanda Dudek, the founder of HBB, said she came across this program when she was on the hunt for a good article story. A hygiene bank, Community Hygiene Bank (CHB), also operates in Brockport. When Dudek wrote an article on them, she Amanda Dudek, HBB Founder realized that this program was something that was needed in her area: Livingston County. After this epiphany, Dudek visited CHB and volunteered at one of its events. She described it as a great experience, and after volunteering for the second time at one of the CHB events, she brought the idea home to the church to which she belongs.

HBB is a young program, and Dudek expressed her hope for its longevity. Two long-term goals for the program include making sure the families in the area have access to the hygiene and cleanliness products “to eliminate this need,” and providing families and individuals with connection or reconnection with faith in God. The latter goal is left to the discretion of the families and individuals who attend HBB events, and no one is at all pressured into doing so. In fact, many from the local community have expressed happiness with and gratitude for the services this program offers.

Her church, Grace & Truth Christian Fellowship, was very supportive of the idea, and shortly after, it approved starting a hygiene bank program of its own. This program is entirely staffed by volunteers and funded by donations and sponsorships by individuals and such businesses and organizations as Wegmans, the Livingston County Department of Health, and the Original Red Osier Restaurant in Stafford, NY. HBB was also awarded the Greater Rochester Health Foundation grant which helped them immensely through the pandemic.

The Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley celebrated its two-year anniversary in November, and it will hold its next event on January 8th, 2022. HBB strongly encourages anyone in need to attend and anyone willing to donate what they can.

The very first event of the local HBB program took place in November of 2019. According to Dudek, the core purpose of this program is “to put the love of Jesus into action; showing people that God loves them.” Another core principle of this program is that anyone in need can benefit from the services of HBB regardless of their income or the town in which they live. HBB also provides additional information about community resources and about other churches that have supported the

HBB works on a first come, first served basis, holding an event on the second Saturday of every other month (starting in January) from noon to 2 pm. The families are asked to bring a form of ID containing their address. Then, they are registered. Afterwards, they are shown around several tables of hygiene and cleanliness products by volunteers and select their own necessary items.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.
