STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * “Scotch” used to be a synonym for “thrifty” or “frugal.” When cellophane tape was first invented, it was marketed during the Great Depression as “Scotch tape” since it could extend the life of objects and save you money. * A grizzly bear has enough bite strength to crush a bowling ball. * A man sued Warner Bros. -- and won -- after he was injured while fainting during a 1974 screening of “The Exorcist.” * A 19th-century costume designer invented the horned Viking helmet. * Chocolate milk was originally sold as medicine.

Thanksgiving Dinner Thanks I wish to praise the fantastic job the Dansville Rotary Club did with their Thanksgiving Dinner Program! I was a happy recipient of one of their delicious dinners, and it REALLY was delicious! My dinner arrived nicely HOT and was arranged beautifully. You really made my day! Thank you all, and I hope your Thanksgiving Day was as special as mine! ~ A senior citizen in Dansville Tribute to a Kind Neighbor Today Donna Cochrane from Honeoye came to pick up items for a Sunday school service project a mutual friend is leading, and mentioned that a fall earlier in the day landed the lady at urgent care with broken bones in her hand. Donna had already picked up our friend’s prescriptions and was likely on her way to provide dinner as well. This kindness reminded me of the many times Donna has recognized and quietly provided for people in the community. After a long career in the classroom, she is especially attuned to helping children in need - and I only know of the few I have helped her accomplish. She is a shining example of living the Golden Rule, and I am blessed to call her my friend.
Business Attitudes I tried to purchase a product locally and have it installed. The item was not in stock and it would take a couple weeks to have them order my particular item. I went online and ordered it, and it came in 3 days. Went to have it installed for just an installation fee and got an attitude for not purchasing it from them. Waiting a couple weeks or taking a substitute was not what I wanted. My suggestion is to call them first of your intentions; if you get an attitude, go elsewhere. No one cares about us We senior citizens are lonesome and left alone. Holidays are very depressing. Some of us are handicap in nursing homes. In today’s society, our kids, family, and supposed friends always say, “If you need us, call.” Well, this isn’t the case. Some of us need outside help: leaves to rake, a quick roof job... I could go on and on. All of today’s generations don’t care. The generations have to remember we raised them, put them through college, but they don’t think of all this. Why can’t you help us? Remember, we are still alive. Wake up, children, someday you will regret this and say “I wish Mom and Dad were here.” Too late. People in today’s society need to wake up and help each other like in the olden days. Where did the good old days go besides down the tube? - Sincerely, Senior Citizens

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf • 2 cups half-and-half • 4 egg yolks • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar • 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) 1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Should an owner punish puppy after accident? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I bought a puppy a few weeks ago who was between 2 to 3 months old. Star is wonderful, and housetraining has been OK. But yesterday, he pooed in the hallway while we were out. My boyfriend says I need to push his nose into the mess and punish him. I don’t think that’s the right way to train a puppy. What do you think? -- Daria in St. Louis, Missouri DEAR DARIA: Your instinct is spot on, and you should trust it more. That’s the wrong way to train a puppy. It’s aggressive, negative and doesn’t teach the puppy anything -- except to be afraid. Young puppies are learning machines, picking up habits quickly -- both good and bad. They need to be constantly supervised to keep them safe and to correct them (not punish them) on the spot so they learn what they can and can’t do in the household. When they’re not supervised, I recommend placing them in a properly sized kennel crate. Think of it as a den for your puppy, a safe spot. Again, not a place to punish him. Furthermore, puppies need to pee and poo more frequently than adult dogs -- about four times daily at Star’s age, but sometimes more. It’s up to you to make sure their elimination schedule is adequate and that you are there to supervise them. Star couldn’t wait for you to get home, so he went in the hallway. That’s on you, not on Star. Clean up the mess (spray with an odor eliminator) and continue your training schedu

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Fatal Episodes of VFib Require an AICD Implant ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m an 88-year-old female who has been diagnosed with ventricular fibrillation (VFib). My cardiac electrophysiologist, who implanted a conventional pacemaker four years ago, has noticed several episodes of VFib (up to 30 seconds, read via a bedside monitor). They recommend replacing the current pacemaker with a combo pacemaker and defibrillator. I wonder about the history/success of this device. -- C.R. ANSWER: Most people have heard about atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is a common, chaotic electrical condition of the top chambers of the heart. Without regular electrical input from the atria to the ventricles, the ventricles beat irregularly, but blood flow from the heart still remains adequate. By contrast, VFib is a chaotic movement of the lower chambers, and the heart does not pump blood during VFib. Within a short time, 10 to 30 seconds at most, the brain will not have enough oxygen to keep you conscious. Unless VFib is rapidly treated or stops by itself (which is rare, but happened to you), VFib is fatal. A survivor of VFib definitely benefits from an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD). Nowadays, they also have the ability to act as a pacemaker; they recognize and immediately provide a shock during episodes of VFib. AICDs first became available when I was in medical school during the 1980s, but current models are a huge improvement since they are smaller and last longer. The evidence is strong that people at a high risk for a “malignant” arrythmia like VFib live longer with an AICD than those who are only treated with anti-arrhythmic drugs. The rate of sudden cardiac death is reduced by about 50%. You are very lucky and should get this recommended device as soon as possible. They are common and effective.

Here’s a Tip Zip-top bags are essential when our family packs for holiday visiting. We use gallon-size bags for the kids’ outfits -- top, bottoms, underclothes, etc. -- and each bag holds one complete set. There is no suitcase chaos, as the bag comes out, and yesterday’s clothing goes in, ready for laundry day when we get home. Happy traveling. -- JoAnn After Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decoration, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up. A great storage container for fancy ornaments is a liquor box, which you can get for free outside of package stores. They have cardboard separators that make it easy to store glass bulbs. -- W.F. in New Mexico (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

27 Years of Winter Magic: Dansville’s Annual Celebration of Community and Cheer S U B M I T T E D BY SA LO M E FA R R A RO, E V E N TS CO M M I T T E E CO C H AI R
D
ansville’s Winter in the Village started in 1996 by Alice Burdick and Susan DeMuth with the Dansville Business Association, assisted by Randy DeMuth, Dawn Didas, and Dorothy Hotchkiss in the early years. The original concept was to fill all store fronts on Main Street with community organizations, musicians, and vendors to create a vintage holiday feel in downtown Dansville. The ensuing community attendance generated hustle and bustle on Main Street and throughout downtown, akin to decades’ earlier experiences. Santa has played a pivotal role every year, visiting with children (now a staple at Dansville Public Library) and being the star of the parade, riding in one of our fire trucks. Vendors, school groups (particularly musical), and local organizations’ activities have always featured prominently. The entire event is by the community, for the community. More than 100 individuals, businesses and organizations currently participate. Attendance easily surpassed 1,000 people. The Dansville Chamber of Commerce became the organizing group after a few years. Its Events Committee takes the lead for the Santa Parade, Wine and Spirits Walk, ice sculptures, a window decorating contest (Congratulations to the 2023 window decorating contest winners in this year’s theme: The Twelve Days of Christmas! 1st Place - Marleen Mark, 2nd Place Mill Creek Optical, 3rd Place - R’Meraki Hair Salon, Honorable Mention - Empire Realty Group), and a costume contest (added in 2022), as well as vendors and nonprofits at the Town Hall, Genesee Community College, and outdoors throughout downtown. The committee gathers details from participants (much easier with technology today) and creates cohesive marketing for the event, notably Facebook and Instagram (Dansville’s Winter in the Village). The committee works closely and gratefully with local fire and police departments for safety considerations. The Lions Club Fantasy of Lights Christmas tree Costume contest winner - eight maids a extravaganza in Church Park milking; Photo credit Caleb J Miller was incorporated into Winter in the Village, becoming the end point for the Santa Parade. This allowed the parade to grow, notably with the help of parade coordinator Kaylee Walker Lohrmann. The 2023 parade included our High School Drum Line, K’s Canines on parade, WNY Side Saddle Group, floats, and our wonderful Dansville Ambulance and Fire Departments.

and organizations. This year, 18 sculptures were placed downtown (6 more than 2022), 12 of them carved in the 2023 theme: The Twelve Days of Christmas. Winter in the Village is always held on the first Saturday of December regardless of the weather! It is an all day, communitywide event, starting with the Jingle Bells 5K, school music groups at Star Theatre and ending with the Wine and Spirits Walk as well as free horse and wagon rides. People of all ages come together to celebrate a day filled with holiday happiness, fun, family, and friendship. 2023 marked the event’s 27th year, and co-chairs of the Events Committee, Julee Acomb and Salome Farraro, say Winter in the Village Ice carving demo finished; continues and improves photo credit Salome Farraro every year because the Dansville community values it. Thank you to the many people who step up and contribute in ways big and small. Susan DeMuth, owner of Dogwood Trading Company with her husband Randy, reflects that the children she saw at early events now attend Winter in the Village with children of their own.
Ice sculptures have been added in recent years, along with a live ice carving demo, organized by Lorri Welch. The popular sculptures are generously sponsored by businesses, individuals,

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Use social media to give your recommendations on small businesses that go above and beyond in quality and service.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 10, 1690, a near-mutiny forces the Massachusetts Bay Colony to issue the first paper currency in the Western Hemisphere. Soldiers were typically paid in coins, but shortages forced armies to temporarily issue IOUs -- in one case, in the form of cut-up playing cards. * On Dec. 11, 1978, a half dozen masked robbers raid the Lufthansa Airlines cargo building at JFK Airport in New York, making off with more than $5 million in cash ($20 million in today’s dollars) and almost $1 million in jewelry. * On Dec. 12, 1989, Leona Helmsley, nicknamed the “Queen of Mean,” is sentenced to four years in prison, 750 hours of community service and a $7.1 million tax-fraud fine in New York. Helmsley once quipped that “only the little people pay taxes.” * On Dec. 13, 2003, in Seattle, the iconic Hat ‘n’ Boots Tex Gas Station is hauled away from the spot where it had stood for almost 50 years. The 44-foot-wide Stetson hat had perched atop the filling station’s office, while the 22-foot-tall cowboy boots housed the men’s and the women’s restrooms.
