FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE To flip or not to flip: Flipping properties gained popularity in the second decade of this century, but figures from the property database curator ATTOM Data Solutions indicates that returns on investments in flipped properties declined for the third straight year in 2020. Though flipping can still yield a strong return, investors may not realize the returns on flipped properties that they might have realized as recently as five years ago. Potential investors should conduct some research regarding real estate market trends, including flipping data where available, to make the most informed decision possible.

MOST POPULAR ETHNIC CUISINES ACROSS THE COUNTRY
Tuesday, 2/20 • 4-6 pm: Spaghetti Dinner. A hearty portion of spaghetti with meatballs and/or sausage, a roll and includes a house salad. $10.00
What constitutes “ethnic” food differs from person to person. Someone of Italian descent may dine regularly on garlic-infused pasta dishes, while a person from another area of the world may find such foods exotic.

In the cultural melting pot of North America, various cuisines representing countries that span the globe are within arm’s length for many people. According to Technomic, a Chicago-based research firm, 77 percent of Americans enjoy ethnic foods while dining out once a month. Around 38 percent order ethnic food weekly. In addition, many more people prepare ethnic cuisine at home.

A growing interest in ethnic foods is fueled by young people. Technomic notes that millennials are more apt to want to try various cuisines and then incorporate them into their regular dining experiences. The National Restaurant Association found that 60 percent of people are likely to “tie their favorite ethnic food to their family history.” Interest in ethnic foods tends to be highest in urban areas where restaurants and ingredients may be more readily available.
$2 OFF
When it comes to the top ethnic cuisines enjoyed throughout the states or provinces and territories, Chinese, Mexican and Italian rally for the top spots on diners’ plates. While the NRA has Italian cuisine as earning topbilling, Technomic’s list says that Chinese food, at 76 percent, followed by Mexican food (74 percent) and Italian (71 percent) comprise the biggest ethnic draws. Japanese or sushi comes in a distant fourth at 32 percent in the United States.

The statistics portal Statista indicates that, as of January 2015, Chinese, American and Italian foods are quite popular in Canada. However, the percentage of people who cook these foods as opposed to eating them out at a restaurant varies. Chinese food is most widely enjoyed in a restaurant setting, while Italian food is frequently whipped up at home. As immigration tides change, ethnic cuisine may change with them. However, interest in experiencing ethnic dining is likely to remain consistent.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Upgrade walkways. Though it’s more expensive than adding planters and planting perennials, upgrading old and cracked walkways is a great way to give a property a whole new look. According to the renovation experts at HomeAdvisor, homeowners typically pay between $6 and $12 per square foot for new concrete walkway installation. Homeowners working on a budget can target spots where walkways have already cracked and fix those areas first before continuing the project piecemeal until all the old walkways have been replaced.

Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home. • A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

HOW CHOCOLATE BECAME TIED TO VALENTINE’S DAY Heart-shaped boxes filled with decadent treats are coveted gifts on Valentine’s Day. Chocolate lovers typically have a favorite type of chocolate, whether it’s creamy filled truffles or chocolate pieces with fruit or nut fillings. The tradition of gifting chocolate is anything but new. Chocolate and other sweet treats have been offered for centuries as prized gifts. Even ancient Aztecs and Mayans celebrated chocolate and saw it as a hot commodity. Drinks made of cacao beans would be given as presents to people of high status. Chocolate also would be offered to the gods as a token of appreciation. Cacao beans were even used as a form of currency at one point. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Sudden Foot Pain After a Concert Becomes Debilitating
Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester
Patient Focused • Family Friendly • Restorative Dentistry www.JillNikasDDS.com
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter and her friend went to a concert and had to climb stairs. They ended up walking about 2.5 miles in total. After returning home, my daughter had severe pain in both of her feet and was unable to stand or walk on them. She said it felt like someone was crushing them. The pain did not get better, so she went to the emergency room a few days later. A doctor there performed an X-ray and said that the pain was due to bunions, although they did not even look at her feet. She also saw a foot specialist who told her that the diagnosis was neuropathy of the feet and recommended Neurontin for pain. He asked her if she has diabetes, but she does not. They told my daughter that she will have to live in pain for the rest of her life. The doctor recommended getting some tests done on her nerves at the hospital, but she doesn’t have money to pay for these tests. What can be done to help her? How is it possible that the pain started so suddenly? She is in constant pain and is unable to walk. -- K.B. ANSWER: “Neuropathy” is not a diagnosis; it’s a name for a diverse group of diseases that cause damage to the nerves, specifically signifying the nerves in the brain and spinal cord or those outside of them. The recommendation of getting nerve testing done is correct. This does sound like neuropathy from the little bit of information I have, although neuropathies do not typically begin with exercise the way you described. I have seen several cases where muscles have become terribly inflamed and even break down after a period of unusually strenuous exertion (this usually gets better with time), but I would have expected the doctors to make that diagnosis. There is a compressive neuropathy in the foot (tarsal tunnel syndrome) where the nerve is damaged by pressure from muscles, bones and connective tissue, but this happening to both feet at the same time would be surprising. Metabolic neuropathies, like B12 deficiency, cause symptoms on both sides but do not begin suddenly. I’d be worried about her lower spine. I don’t know what your daughter’s financial situation is, whether she might be eligible for Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act, or whether there is a free medical clinic near you. I have had many patients make just enough money that they don’t qualify for Medicaid, but are unable to afford commercial insurance and don’t get it through work *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories. I always stand to the side and then look in to see if anyone’s in there and when it’s clear, I get in. It’s not a pretty sight when you’ve got people trying to get in as people are trying to get out. Please use common sense.
Thank you I was in the Wegmans parking lot on Feb 2nd and this gentleman informed me that I had a flat tire. While I was sitting there trying to figure out what I was going to do, he came back with a machine to blow up my tire right there. I’m 88 years old, so this was a blessing from God. Thank you! Winter is so beautiful Winter is so beautiful around here. I’m so glad to see so many people using the Erie Canal towpath and the county park trails in all seasons (we’re from upstate NY after all; if we shelter inside whenever it’s under 40º, we’d miss so much of winter).
Use your phone To the people who complained about a restaurant being closed despite checking their website for the hours of operation, do not blame the restaurant. I’m sure the restaurant had a phone number. Did you think to call the restaurant? Folks, have you noticed people developing a communication phobia to the point of paralysis? With all the technology today there is less communication going on than there was 100 years ago. This couple probably pays over $100 a month to have their cellphone, yet they don’t use it for what it was originally designed to do.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN PASSOVER AND EASTER To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not to seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a moment in history that helped free slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance of Pesach, or Passover. During this time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays.

Is Pet Sitting A ProfitableCareer?
Ruthy, a four-month-old Persian kitten, is a delightful companion with many playful ways.
Send us a photo and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com, Share With Us • Or mail to: PO Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m a high school student and I’m thinking about what kind of career I’d like to have after I graduate three years from now. I’m not sure college is for me, and I like being around pets -- my family has two dogs and a cat, and I have a flop-eared rabbit. I’ve heard that pet sitting is a good business to be in. Is this true? Can I do that instead of college? -- Caryn H., Fort Walton Beach, Florida DEAR CARYN: Pet sitting is a huge and growing market, because almost every owner is going to need someone to watch their pet at some point. So, it’s certainly worth considering as a career. You can start your own pet-sitting business or go to work for someone else. This is a job that requires responsibility and self-discipline, because people are entrusting you with their pets. You have to show up at the agreed-upon time, follow the owners’ instructions to the letter, and make sure their pets remain happy and healthy. If dog-walking is part of the job, you’ve got to keep them under control and away from conflicts with other dogs. You’ve got to stay healthy, because a sick day is not an option unless you have someone to cover for you. Start by visiting the websites of two major pet-sitting organizations: Pet Sitters International (petsit.com) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (petsitters.org). They offer resources, certifications and more. Talk to your parents and your school guidance counselor about your interest. They’ll support you and help you explore this career option. David Riddell: Guiding Venture Compassionate Ministries Towards Community Transformation BY SUZIE WELLS
I
n the heart of Henrietta, NY, David Riddell, Director of Venture Compassionate Ministries (VCM) at Calvary Community Church of the Nazarene, stands as a beacon of hope and compassion for the local community. Riddell sheds light on his inspiring journey, the challenges faced by VCM, and the organization’s unwavering commitment to serving its neighbors. David Riddell’s path to leading Venture Compassionate Ministries is rooted in a deep-seated passion for helping others. With a professional journey spanning 17 years, Riddell has dedicated his efforts to various nonprofit organizations, primarily those with religious affiliations. His educational background in Christian education and recreation management, followed by graduate work in business administration, has equipped him with a diverse skill set essential for leading impactful community organizations. Riddell also serves as Senior Director of Advancement and Communications at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester. The pivotal moment that ignited Riddell’s passion for service occurred during a mission trip to Guatemala at the age of 13. This transformative experience broadened his perspective and fueled his desire to serve individuals and families in need. Over the years, he has actively engaged in compassionate ministry programs and nonprofit work, leading and participating in mission trips to Guatemala. Riddell says his daily inspiration at VCM comes from the unwavering resilience and perseverance of the families they serve. The challenges these individuals face are profound, especially since the pandemic intensified difficulties for many. Equally inspiring, he says, are the dedicated volunteers within VCM who embody the spirit of community service. More than 80 individuals lend their time David Riddell and efforts to VCM’s outreach programs, showing the power of love and community support. Riddell says, “Their commitment to serving others in a nonjudgmental and caring capacity is a testament to the power of love and community support. I am inspired to continue fostering a community where neighbors come together, unconditionally supporting one another at their points of greatest need.” As Director of Venture Compassionate Ministries, Riddell finds great joy in witnessing the positive impact on the faces of the families they serve. Especially poignant was their Christmas food distribution event, where despite challenging weather conditions, volunteers came together to bring holiday cheer to the community. The smiles and expressions of gratitude from the families receiving personalized food boxes were particularly heartwarming, Riddell says, as “connecting with the families and sharing in their joy during a challenging time encapsulates the essence of what we do and reinforces the impact of our efforts.”
volunteer, giving back to the community that supported them during their greatest need. Riddell emphasizes that his core goal is to ensure that every person treated by VCM is recognized for their VCM Food Pantry Stockers worth, beyond being a statistic or a client, “irrespective of their past actions or the challenges they may be facing.” Riddell’s goal is to create opportunities to build genuine connections with families, guiding them towards holistic wellbeing, both physically and spiritually. Venture Compassionate Ministries operates on the principle of “loving our neighbors,” inspired by the biblical commandment to love one’s neighbor as oneself. The organization is committed to walking alongside community members through every phase of life, from newborns to working families to shut-ins, offering a range of outreach programs and services. The needs present today among the families served by VCM are challenging and diverse, from food insecurity, job instability, housing and domestic safety concerns, medical expenses, and a pervasive sense of isolation. The organization navigates these challenges by offering a comprehensive strategy that provides hope, creates opportunities, and builds meaningful partnerships. Venture Compassionate Ministries engages the community through weekly support groups, Divorce Recovery, Embrace Grace, Embrace Life, and addressing essential support for individuals navigating challenging life transitions. The Food Pantry program, their largest initiative, strategically partners with organizations like Foodlink to support those in need. Additional programs, such as their quilting program that creates baby quilts and hats to families at Highland Hospital, Lydia’s Closet (providing free children’s clothing), and special outreach initiatives such as their Easter Hygiene Baskets, Back to School Backpack and School Supplies, diaper and formula distribution, ensure that VCM’s support addresses various aspects of the community’s needs. David Riddell’s leadership at Venture Compassionate Ministries reflects a commitment to fostering a supportive community where love, compassion, and genuine connections prevail. Through VCM’s multifaceted programs and outreach initiatives, Riddell and his team are making a profound impact on the lives of those facing adversity in Henrietta and beyond.
VCM has witnessed an influx of new volunteers, affiliated or unaffiliated with Calvary or Venture. Riddell is inspired that individuals who were once assisted by VCM during the pandemic now
