New Jersey restaurant is implementing a no kids under 10 policy because of loud, unruly, messy children. What do you think of this policy?

• I agree with it. Not all restaurants are a good fit for children

• I welcome a restaurant which won’t have the distraction of small children

• They should have a section dedicated to families with young kids

• Kids should be welcome no matter what

• My kids are well behaved, would they make an exception?

FACTS ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON

Few Americans would be hard pressed to identify George Washington’s visage, which is depicted on some American currency, including the $1 bill. Born in 1732 to Virginia planters, Washington’s interests included western expansion, which he was able to take part as a teenager, helping to survey the Shenandoah lands at the age of 16. Washington was also interested in military arts, and he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in 1754, eventually playing a role in what became the French and Indian War.

In 1759, Washington was serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses, an assembly of elected representatives of the English colonies in North America.GrowingfrustratedwithandfeelingexploitedbyBritishregulations, Washington voiced his resistance to restrictions placed on colonists, who were moving toward what would become the American Revolution.

At the Second Continental Congress, which assembled in 1775, Washington was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, taking command of troops at Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 3, 1775. Under Washington’s command, the Continental Army would ultimately succeed, winning the colonists their independence from British rule.

In 1787, Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, where the new Constitution was ratified. Within two years Washington was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States.

Though the current two-term limit was not law at the end of Washington’s second term, he chose to retire from the Presidency anyway, leaving office in 1797. He would retire to his Virginia home at Mount Vernon, where he still engaged in various business dealings. Within three years of his retirement, however, Washington would fall ill of a throat infection that ultimately took his life on December 14, 1799.

In addition to providing the inspiration for Presidents’ Day, Washington’s legacy is that of a hero who led an army of colonists to a victory over a dominant empire.

The Washington Monument and Mount Rushmore are two of the more notable monuments honoring the first President of the United States. In addition, the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. is so named in honor of George Washington.

FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING

Manyhomeownerslovewoodfencingbecauseofitsversatilitywithregard to design and color. The options are endless when it comes to crafting wood fencing, which also can be stained in any color homeowners prefer. Wood fencing can be designed not only for homeowners who prioritize privacy, but it also can be crafted for homeowners for whom privacy is not a significant concern. Wood is a relatively inexpensive fencing material, but the maintenance required to keep wood fencing looking great can sometimes be costly and time-consuming.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* “It can be tricky to add new keys to a key ring, especially if you don’t have much of a fingernail. I have found a foolproof way to get the key started. Just use a staple remover. It works wonders!” -- T.R. in Indiana

* If you find that you have small scratches in your wood furniture, try this old trick: Rub a walnut over dings to cover them up. Or find a matching brown crayon, rub it lightly into the scratch, and finish with a hair dryer held 10 inches away for about 10-15 seconds. It melts the wax of the crayon, and then you can buff it with a soft rag. Any excess is swept away and the color remains.

* Got small kids? If your little one keeps rolling out of his bed, here’s a tip: Use a pool noodle tucked under the fitted sheet, lengthwise along the edge of the bed. It’s just enough of a bumper to send a sleeping child back to the center of the mattress.

* “If you have many mismatched frames that you would like to use, you can try spray painting them all the same color. I had several that were different colors and a little bit beat up, but I wanted to use them in one big group. I painted them all glossy black, and they look great!”

-- W.F. in Arkansas

* Hanging shoe racks are a wonderful organizational tool, especially the ones made of plastic that have see-through pockets. You can use them on the back of your bathroom door for small towels and toiletries, or how about on the back of baby’s door as a diaper organizer? My favorite use is on the back of my garage door to hold all the cleaning bottles and solutions with other supplies. They are nice and high, and out of reach of little hands.

DEAR CURTIS: e short answer is, don’t. It’s unlikely that what you saw was an approved ad, because most social media companies do not allow pet sales or advertising for the sale of pets. Probably, someone created a post and made it public.

Avoid responding to the post, even if you think you know the person who posted it or think you know the location. Chances are it’s either a scam to part you from your hardearned money, or you will receive a puppy that is not the one advertised or is very ill and needs a lot of medical care. I’ve heard too many stories from owners who got scammed from such online transactions.

If you just want a cute animal companion, adopt a pet through your local shelter. You’ll be able to see and interact with a potential pet, and the shelter will help you evaluate whether you’re ready for a dog at this point. ere is a cost involved with adoption, but those fees are upfront. And I guarantee it is substantially less than what you will pay a shady pet dealer (or pay out in medical bills later on).

If you absolutely want a speci c breed of dog, do the homework required. Find nearby breeders who specialize in the breed you’re interested in. Read up on the breed. Find out the nancial requirements to match with, purchase, train and care for that dog.

No matter which path you pick, know that pets are an investment of money and time. e dividend is a healthy, happy pet that adores you. Don’t take a shortcut.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

A pop of pink amidst bland sky

Something sweet, which brightens the eye

As I stare at my bleak ceiling

Restitution from bitter weather

Your taste unique, your purpose romantic

Healing me, I am once more organic

FOODLINK ENSURES THE COMMUNITY GETS FED

for students without access to school meals over breaks, remote learning, weekends, and more.

To date, 8.4 million pounds of food have been sorted by Foodlink volunteers, and they only plan to grow their e orts in the future, reaching even more people in need.

ose interested in supporting Foodlink should visit foodlinkny.org to nd many ways community members can get involved. Even donating one dollar can help provide three meals for someone in need. Foodlink o ers options for onetime donations as well as monthly subscriptions. ere is also the option to donate “in honor” or “in memory” of someone.

Most people may think a small thing cannot signi cantly change the world. However, when Tom Ferraro received a request for a food donation from the omas’ English Mu ns warehouse manager in 1978, he tooktheseeminglyinsigni cantmu nsandcreatedsomething incredible: the organization now known as Foodlink.

Using the power of food to eradicate hunger and create healthy communities is the goal of the organization whose main headquarters is in Rochester, New York. Ferraro helped transform Foodlink from its modest beginnings into one of the most cutting-edge food banks in the country because of his early dedication to addressing both the symptoms and causes of food insecurity and his conviction that charity alone cannot eradicate hunger.

e typical associations with food nonpro ts are those of food drives or pop-up pantries, but Foodlink does much more than that. is nonpro t focuses on more than just giving food to those in need. ey aim to end hunger before it starts through food access, food literacy, and career empowerment classes. For example, the Foodlink Career Fellowship provides a yearlong culinary curriculum that combines classroom instruction with hands-on training in Foodlink’s cutting-edge commercial kitchen. Alongside the Foodlink Community Kitchen team, fellows produce tens of thousands of nutritious meals every day for Rochester children while developing the fundamental skills required to work in a busy kitchen.

e Fellowship is the rst cook apprenticeship in the state and is a New York State Registered Apprenticeship Training program. It received almost $1 million in NYS Workforce funding in 2020. e Class of 2021 Fellows helped launch the Foodlink Community Cafe, a nonpro t, pay-it-forward cafe at the Central Library in downtown Rochester. is cafe relies on donations put toward causes to help feed the community. Open at 115 South Ave. from 11:00am to 3:00pm every weekday, the Café’s meals are both a ordable and delicious.

Foodlink also coordinates a Backpack Program, which provides healthy food based on MyPlate national guidelines

Foodlink is also making a splash with its Check Out Hunger campaign in local grocery stores. Shoppers can add a little extra, $1, $2, $3, or $5, to their grocery bill to support foodinsecure families in the region. Foodlink plans to run several

Foodlink always seeks volunteers to help sort donated food in the distribution center, to assist Curbside Market customers, to help maintain the Lexington Ave. Community Farm, and more. ere is an opportunity for any individual, family, or group to give back to the community through Foodlink. STAY SAFE AND WARM DURING WINTER WORKOUTS

30-50%

Wear appropriate headgear. For years, many people subscribed to the conventional wisdom that suggested people lose 40 to 45 percent of their body heat through their heads. But in 2008, researchers at Indiana University debunked that myth, suggesting that if humans lost that much heat through their heads, then they would be just as cold when going outside without a hat on as they would be if they left home without wearing any pants. But wearing headgear when exercising outdoors is still a good idea, as the head is more sensitive to changes in temperature than many other areas of the body. A wool hat you can pull down over your ears can protect them from getting too cold. Athletes may also want to consider ski masks or other facial covers that can protect their faces when winter winds are howling.

Gas Station Thanks

Thank you so very much for the young man and his daughter who paid for my gas on Thursday, February 3rd in Bloomfield. My sister and I started out to meet another sister for coffee when I realized my car was on empty. I stopped at the next gas station but was having difficulty getting my credit card to register when this gentleman put gas in my tank from his host. A very large amount of gas! Can you imagine such thoughtfulness! And I didn’t even get his name. Thank you again and bless your kindness.

Thank You Naples!

I was pleasantly surprised to find beautiful Valentines posted all along Main St. in Naples. Thank you to the organizations, businesses and individuals responsible. Made my day! Happy Valentine's Day!

Rural Road Rager

Last week I was sitting at the stop sign at the bottom of our rural and partial seasonal road, waiting for you, an oncoming car, to pass by before entering the County Rd. You decided to put on your blinker at the last minute, pull in front of me, stop, and roll down your window. You then proceeded to yell, claiming I am in your lane (not true) and ask "what am I doing?"! I said "I am turning" and sweetly said goodbye and drove off. This enraged you as you shouted expletives and laid on your horn. I thought you would come after me next, but didn't. Wow, what an angry and aggressive young man you are, triggered by something that was so nothing!

Mind My Own Business?

According to the CDC, obesity costs the Healthcare System $173 billion dollars each year. A cost we all pay in the form of higher insurance premiums. So your daily garbage plate is taking money out of my pocket. I'd say that makes it my business.

To The Anti Dog Woman

To the woman who lives on my street and hates dogs, STOP harassing me every time I simply walk by your house with my dogs. They’re NOT going to the bathroom in your yard. We are allowed to utilize the PUBLIC sidewalk. If you don’t stop I will call the police on you just like you do to everyone else on the street. Get a taste of your own medicine.

Thanks

I would like to thank all the folks who stopped and made sure I was alright on Friday morning when my Ford truck went off the road and into a ditch on Rt. 46 just before Rt. 21. I was pinned in the truck in the ditch. AAA got there three hours after it happened. I want to thank ALL who stopped to make sure I was ok. Kudos to the state trooper who also stopped.

SENIOR NEWS

Are ere Recalled Foods in Your Freezer?

How many food items in your freezer, refrigerator or kitchen cabinet are on recall lists?

I spotted a food recall alert on the news, but I only heard part of the announcement. On to the internet I went, looking for the information. And sure enough, for the rst time ever, I actually had a recalled food item. It was a bit unnerving to realize that I hadn’t been reading all the recall alerts I get in my email inbox.

While looking for more sites that provide alerts, I came across one I hadn’t known about: FoodManufacturing.com. Just in the past few weeks, they’ve put out alerts for a certain soup because of an error on the label, several brands of Vienna sausages, hot chocolate K-cups (it might contain peanut products), a pot roast meal, sprouts, frozen chicken entrees, popcorn, frozen manicotti, diced beef ... and more.

To look at their list, go to the site and click on the “Recalls/Alerts” tab. e Food Safety and Inspection Service arm of the Department of Agriculture issues alerts as well at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls. Note the advanced search feature on the le side of the screen where you can lter by cause, risk level, states and more.

Food Safety (www.foodsafety.gov) provides information on the safe handling and storage of food.

Recalls.gov is another good site for recall notices. Click on the “Food” tab to see your online choices.

And what should I do with that recalled product I found in my freezer? I’m going to take it back to the store for a refund, of course.

On a sad note, did you see the Consumer Reports research on the amount of lead and cadmium in our favorite dark chocolate bars? Go to ConsumerReports.org and put “Lead and Cadmium Could Be in Your Dark Chocolate” in the search box.

WINTERTIME CAN BE ‘SNOW’ MUCH FUN TO DISCOVER

Winter storms are on the way. While many people are anxious to see landscapes covered in white, others already are counting down the days to spring blooms. Weather can be awe-inspiring and interesting, and learning the secrets about snow is no exception.

Snow forms when water vapor in the atmosphere freezes into ice crystals. Snow falls as snowflakes, which come in a variety of shapes. However, according to Mental Floss, snow also can precipitate as graupel or sleet. Graupel are pellets of opaque ice particles that fall through freezing cloud droplets. They are not the same as sleet, which are drops of rain that freeze into small, translucent balls of ice.

Snowflakes are generally small and accumulate to form visible snow coverings. However, snowflakes can be large. The largest snowflake on record was reported to be 15 inches across and eight inches thick. According to “The Guinness Book of World Records,” this giant snowflake was discovered at Fort Keogh, Montana, on January 28, 1887.

Although it appears white, snow is actually clear and colorless. The National Snow and Ice Data Center says the complex structure and many facets of snow crystals results in visible light being reflected. Light is absorbed uniformly over the wavelengths of visible light, which gives snow its white appearance.

Eventhoughsnowismorecommoninnorthernelevationsandcoldregions, snowfall is not exclusive to frigid climates. In the United States, snow has fallen in cities most often associated with sun and warmth, such as San Diego, Miami and Hawaii. The southern Italy town of Capracotta received 100 inches of snow in 18 hours on March 5, 2015. In spite of its location, Capracotta has been known to receive enormous one-day snowfalls. While snow can fall even in warm climates, the world record holder for the most snow belongs to a northern area. Mt. Baker ski resort in Washington state experienced 1,140 inches in the 1998/1999 winter season.

Snow can fall at temperatures well above freezing. According to ScienceBits.com, snow can still fall at temperatures as warm as 46 F. For snow to fall when temperatures are warm, humidity has to be very low. Even though there’s a common perception that no two snowflakes are alike, this isn’t completely accurate. A scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research found two identical snow crystals in 1988. Also, similar results have been produced in laboratories.

Snow is an interesting form of precipitation. It can be scarce or plentiful, and may feature tiny snowflakes or extremely large ones. Snow also may take on the color of its surrounding environment.

Statins Do Not Increase Risk of Death by Suicide in Men Over 60

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read that there is a correlation between the use of statins and suicide in men over 60, especially if they have suffered from chronic depression. Can you tell me if this has been studied more? -- K.M.

ANSWER: This concern has been studied extensively. An older class of cholesterol medication, the fibrates, was associated with a small increased risk of suicide and violent deaths, in several large studies. However, a very large study published in 2020 showed no increase in risk of death by suicide among those taking statin drugs. In fact, that study, as well as several others, have shown a decrease in depression risk among statin users. Statins have even been found to be (modestly) effective in treatment of drug-resistant depression.

Men over 60 are certainly at a higher risk from death by suicide, but statin drugs do not appear to increase that risk. Anyone with thoughts of hurting themselves should seek care from their doctor, a mental health professional, or the suicide and crisis lifeline at 988 in the U.S. and 833-456-4566 in most Canadian provinces. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 74. I have always been described as small-boned. I am on a statin, but otherwise, I’m healthy. I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia. I do not eat dairy, but I do take vitamin D. I am vegetarian and eat lots of tofu. I am very concerned about taking any additional medicines. Suggestions, please? -- F.M.D.

ANSWER: Osteopenia, or low bone density, is analogous to borderline diabetes or elevated blood pressure. It’s not a disease in itself, but it puts you in a range between the healthiest condition and one that can put you at risk. In the case of osteopenia, you are at a higher risk for developing osteoporosis, which, in turn, puts you at a high risk for a fracture, especially one of the spine or the hip. We do not normally treat low bone density with medicine. Lifestyle interventions to help slow loss of bone density include not only the calcium and vitamin D you are taking, but I especially recommend exercise. Weight-bearing, musclestrengthening and posture exercises are proven to help. Smokers should quit.

You should have gotten a T-score on your report, which compares your bone density for a given bone to a healthy young adult. The worse the T-score, the closer you are to osteoporosis, which is a T score below -2.5. Depending on how close you are to osteoporosis, the sooner your bone density test should be repeated. People with osteoporosis should be considered for medication. I understand your concern about taking more medicine than you need, but you really don’t want a hip fracture to occur.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. ©

WHAT THE NUTRIENTS FOUND IN MANY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES DO FOR YOUR BODY

Magnesium: The Mayo Clinic reports that magnesium supports muscle and nerve function and energy production. Individuals with chronically low levels of magnesium could be at increased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. The NIH notes that magnesium is widely distributed in plants. That means it can be found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including spinach, edamame, black beans, bananas, and broccoli. Magnesium levels vary significantly in these foods, so anyone concerned about magnesium deficiency can speak with their physicians about the best and healthiest ways to include more in their diets.

DID YOU KNOW? Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Many people face the challenge of balancing work and family. Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal.

Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack.

The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.

RECOVERING FROM STROKE

(NAPSI)—Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability—in fact, it’s even more disabling than it is fatal. The period following a stroke can be difficult for patients and their loved ones, as they grapple with the uncertainties of recovery.

For example, Sabrina Warren-White was a busy professional when a stroke in left her unable to speak or use her right side. She quickly began a rigorous rehabilitation program and can now speak, walk and use her right arm.

Doctor’s Advice

Once acute medical issues are resolved, focusing on rehabilitation is paramount to helping people build their strength, capabilities and confidence, said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and ChairmanfortheDepartmentofNeurologyandCo-directorfortheKentucky Neuroscience Institute and KY Clinic at the University of Kentucky.

“Most patients will recover to some degree, but a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation is crucial because it has been shown to result in better outcomes for patients,” Dr. Goldstein added. Access to coordinated and intense therapies after a stroke is important because the greatest amount of recovery tends to occur in the first 30 days, Dr. Goldstein said.

“Intensity of rehabilitation therapy matters,” he pointed out. “Patients need access to good rehabilitation services and should continue to work at it, even after that initial recovery period.”

Where To Turn

To help, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Kindred Rehabilitation Services, raises awareness that stroke is largely beatable through high-quality rehabilitation, patient support, and implementation of Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Guidelines.

Patients and caregivers can access more information about recovery and how to make informed decisions at www.StrokeAssociation.org/recovery.
