TIPS FOR BUYING A TEEN’S FIRST VEHICLE
Prioritize safety. According to Honda, motor vehicles are the leading cause of teenage death, so it is vital to find a reliable and safe car or truck. Vehicle size, crash test performance and safety features are the most important factors to consider when looking at cars for teens. A car with a high safety rating also may translate to discounted auto insurance, which can be a big help considering teens typically pay more out of pocket for insurance.

Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.

PLANNING AHEAD IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION
Determine your motivation for renovating: Renovation projects often involve balancing needs and wants, and determining if a project is a necessity or a luxury can set the timeline and course of the project. Is the roof leaking? If so, immediate action is necessary. Could the kitchen be a bit more functional? If the kitchen is still manageable, a homeowner may be able to wait a little bit to get better prices on appliances or contracting services.
Separating needs from wants helps homeowners map out a viable timeline that maximizes productivity and affordability.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. HOW TO FIND A HOBBY
Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways.
A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people.
Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette.
Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch.
Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money.
Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time.
Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.

Leveling Up: Walking with multiple dogs
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I walk my neighbors’ dogs every day a er school. It takes time because I have to walk one dog at a time, then go to the next house, and then the third one. I’d like to make this job a little more efficient by walking all three dogs at the same time. What’s the best way to do this? -- Colin R., Smyrna, Georgia
Hairball is the most energetic and personable kitty. In her youth, she did gymnastics on my clothes drying rack! Now she’s content to sit on the towels.
Send us a photo and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com Share With Us. Or, Mail to: PO Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES
How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours.
Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.
DEAR COLIN: I can see your dilemma! Walking three dogs separately takes at least one hour, probably two, when you add in the time spent accessing each home, leashing up the dogs and unleashing.
It is possible to walk all three dogs at once, but you have to do two important things first: One, get permission from each neighbor to walk the dogs together, and two, make sure the dogs will get along before you commit.
You may be able to only walk two of them together and the third one alone. And if the neighbors don’t agree, then you’re stuck walking all three separately.
If you do get permission to walk them together, do it on a trial basis. Here are a few tips from professional dog walkers:
• Don’t use retractable leashes when walking multiple dogs. You need full control at all times.
• Leashes can easily get tangled; hold two in one hand and one in the other, or buy a 3-way leash coupler to minimize tangles.
•If one or more dogs gets aggressive or bullying, walk them separately to prevent the problem from getting worse.
•Avoid walking them in areas where a lot of other dogs are present. If all three bolt toward another dog, you may not be able to hang on to them.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Treatment Given for Dry Eyes Fails to Improve Condition
DEAR DR. ROACH: I developed chronic dry eyes after having cataract surgery on both eyes. I consulted an ophthalmologist who specialized in treating dry eyes. She prescribed Restasis, but my condition didn’t improve after three months of use. She then switched me to Xiidra and instructed me to use it for two more refills, which lasted for nine months.
At the end of my conversation with the dry eye specialist, she said that she had done everything she could for me. I inquired about the Miebo drug that was recently approved or the LipiFlow procedure. She mumbled something, then said “goodbye” and “good luck.” Was she openly admitting her incompetence?
-- K.J.W.
ANSWER: It’s hard for me to believe that a dry eye specialist wouldn’t know about the new treatments available in their area of expertise, and I can only guess that there was some kind of miscommunication. As a generalist, I have to know at least a little bit about a whole lot of conditions, rather than a specialist who knows a whole lot about just a few conditions.
For most people with dry eyes, starting with artificial tears is usual and effective, but I certainly have had patients use artificial tears many times daily and still have unpleasant symptoms. I also recommend trying to avoid dry areas, especially with high airflow.
Most people with dry eyes have blockages in the meibomian glands, which secrete an oily substance that helps prevent the eye fluid from drying. It also forces the lacrimal glands to make more tears. (This leads to the paradox of people having red, watery eyes when they really have dry eye disease.) Trying to unblock the meibomian glands with baby shampoo and warm water is another treatment generalists like me often try. But when these therapies aren’t working, an ophthalmologist is essential. An ophthalmologist can do an exam to be sure if the meibomian glands are blocked. Among the treatments they have available are the ones you tried: cyclosporine (Restasis), which works well for a minority of people; lifitegrast (Xiidra), which decreases inflammation; varenicline (Tyrvaya), which increases tear production; and Miebo (perfluorohexyloctane), which works by reducing evaporation.
If the problem really is the blocked glands, doctors can also consider more powerful treatments to unblock them. One of these, Lipiflow, is a heat-based treatment. My colleagues in ophthalmology, to whom I refer, tell me that this is often successful, although the process may need to be repeated -- sometimes every six months and sometimes longer. Ophthalmologists can also place plugs to reduce the loss of tears through drainage.

* On March 8, 1971, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier meet for the “Fight of the Century” at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The bout marked Ali’s return after the boxing commission revoked his license over his refusal to fight in the Vietnam War. Frazier won by a unanimous decision.

By then, radioactive levels of seaweed in the area were found to be 10 times greater than normal.

Here’s a Tip
* Use a muffin pan to make cookie cups for ice cream or fruit. Just flip your muffin pan over, and press dough over the upturned wells. It will puff up a little, but once it settles, they make very nice bowls. I do this with pizza dough as well. Prebake for a few minutes to form the bowl, then fill with ingredients and complete baking.
* If you can put a tension rod in the cabinet under your sink, you can use it to hang spray bottles for extra storage. It’s amazing how much space clears up, and it’s easy to find the bottle you need.
* Travel a lot? Make use of those shower caps by pairing up shoes and using the shower cap to hold them together while simultaneously protecting your clothes from the shoe bottoms. Smart!

Did You Know? Baby Boomers make up the largest generation of Americans born in United States history. Boomers include anyone born between the years 1946 and 1964, as the number of births began to rise as World War II veterans returned home from battle. The greatest number of Baby Boomers were born in 1957, when numbers peaked at 4,300,00. That equates to roughly 8 children born per minute throughout the year. By 2019, the last of the Baby Boomers, or those born in 1964, will be eligible for many senior benefits offered to people age 55 and up. Ten years later, most will be eligible for retirement.

Welcome
William Melvin Kelley (1937-2017)
BY SUZIE WELLS
Born November 1, 1937 at Seaview Hospital on Staten Island, son of an editor of the Amsterdam News, one of the oldest and most influential African American newspapers, William Melvin Kelley made a name for himself in the mid-20th century, and notably spent time during his career as visiting professor at SUNY Geneseo.
According to the Livingston County Historian’s office, William Kelley’s death and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement has renewed interest in his books, which are frequently included on recommended reading lists during Black History Month. Kelley is o en deemed the first to use the term “woke” in print a er his 1962 New York Times op-ed, in which he credits a lot of what Americans called “beatnik slang” as originating with African Americans.
Growing up in a working-class Italian American community in the Bronx, Kelley attended Fieldston, a nearly all-white prep school, where he was student-council president, captain of the track team, and “all-around ‘golden boy.’” He attended Harvard, aiming for a career as a civil rights lawyer. ere, mentored by some of the great experimental novelists and poets of the time, Kelley found his passion, “[abandoning] all his illustrious career plans” to focus on writing.
In his fiction, Kelley explores “the destructiveness of racial categories” as well as “the primacy of sound.” Kelley’s groundbreaking, award-winning debut novel, A Different Drummer, was published in 1962, propelling him into the spotlight. SUNY Geneseo professors Paul Schacht and Walter Harding particularly connected Kelley and Henry David oreau’s alternative views of existence and presence of mind through life.
Kelley served as author-in-residence at SUNY Geneseo during the tumultuous 1965, when civil unrest across the country escalated dramatically as thousands marched against the mistreatment of African Americans and to protest the Vietnam War. e Geneseo campus, with a predominately white student body and faculty, embraced the changing times, but was quiet in comparison to other places as the social counterculture of the 1960s took hold.
While at Geneseo, Kelley taught courses on creative writing and published his second novel, A Drop of Patience. His wife, artist Karen Gibson (now known as Karen “Aiki” Kelley), and newborn daughter, Jesi, accompanied Kelley during his residency. In addition to hosting lectures and book signings for Kelley’s new book, Aiki had her first one-woman art show at the college. She has continued working as an artist to the present day.
A erleavingGeneseo, theKelleysmovedabroadandWilliam published several more works, most unique in their narration and techniques, though usually portrayed people and themes of significant moral seriousness. Kelley was fascinated by language and its variations between speakers. He also came to doubt the
capacity of the English language “to adequately express African-American life,” sometimes blending Black vernacular with puns, regional dialects, and linguistic techniques “thatmostreadersstruggle to identify” as e New Yorker’s Kathryn Shulz wrote in 2018.
Schulz says Kelley was “the lost giant of American literature,” “notably woke,” turning “his considerable intellect and imagination to the question of what it is like to be white in this country, and what it is like, for all Americans, to live under the conditions of white supremacy – not just the dramatic cross-burning, neo-Nazi manifestations of it common to his time and our own but also the everyday forms endemic to our national culture.”
However, when covering the Malcolm X murder trial for e Saturday Evening Post, Kelley became so disgusted with perceived biases in the US judicial system he moved the family to Paris and then to Jamaica, where William focused on his writing and Aiki on her art, as they raised and homeschooled their daughters, Jesi and Cira.
e family eventually returned to New York City. He continued to write and taught fiction at Sarah Lawrence College for almost 30 years starting in 1989. ough Kelley “wrote constantly” for his last 47 years, he never published another book and passed away in 2017.
Aiki says William’s career obscurity was a casualty of the African American revolution’s defeat: “As the momentum of the civil rights movement ebbed, those with the power to make publishing decisions turned their attention elsewhere.” Some propose that Kelley’s unique narrative style was to blame, as readers of both races disconnected from his experimental prose.
William Kelley’s family maintains an artists’ lifestyle in the Bronx, even as life has taken them on different paths outside creative life. His legacy never dies. May we all speak our truths and respect each other enough to hear them.

And so by degrees the winter wore away... and the chill, bitter, windy, early spring came round. The comic almanacks give us dreadful pictures of January and February; but, in truth, the months which should be made to look gloomy in England are March and April. Let no man boast himself that he has got through the perils of winter till at least the seventh of May.

Small Town Shoutout
I wanted to give a small shout out to my small town that in the past few years has done many things for their residents and visitors. From updating/paving the park walkway to adding a disc golf course to new events to redoing a building to a small venue spot, the work hasn’t gone unnoticed by your residents. Kudos!
Wine Sales in Grocery Stores
The grocery stores don’t need to sell wine. They are already dominating the local revenue streams of our communities. Why jeopardize the small wine & liquor stores that help make up our local commercial sectors. It’s just greed on the part of the grocery chains. Write your legislators and say “no” to grocery store wine sales.
Breakfast on a Saturday Morning Brings Me Joy
Handicapped parking
After moving back to Webster 1 1/2 years ago from the Buffalo area, I resumed attending a restaurant in Webster to meet friends and acquaintances from 9:00AM to about 10:30AM to make garrulous conversation. The conversation is all over the place, and it is made up of people in their 70s to early 80s. The number of attendees can vary from 6–12 people. However, adding to this happy merriment is my engaging with a lovely 7 year disabled girl named Delilah. She is brought there by her mom who puts her in a high chair cause she can’t walk and can’t talk too well, but she understands. They sit in a booth about 10 feet down the aisle from our group. That sweet blonde haired little girl has stolen my heart and the others in my group. I wave to her and blow kisses from where I sit and call her name. She then exhibits a smile that enthralls my heart. For the past 3-4 weeks I have brought her candy and dolls. Her mom brings her to our table to interact. Yes, Delilah and friends bring joy to me to start the weekend.
AGAIN, this must be addressed! Monday, a red SUV sped up and quickly pulled in front of me, cutting me off. Then they pulled in the [Department store] (same one as me) and sat in the vehicle for 5 minutes before getting out. My point? In such a hurry to cut me off then sat 5 minutes before getting out. He had parked in a handicapped spot, literally jumped out, bent over, pulled a young child out of a car seat, carried the toddler and briskly walked into the store. PHYSICIANS!! Please do a better job of passing out tags! Seriously, the abuse must stop! This man’s strength did not warrant that close spot by any means. His walking was fantastic. If disabled mentally? Seizures?…he had a young child with him while driving. The excuses must stop, these people know they are abusing this! There must be more spots for the true ambulatory disabled.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear.Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS
Do your research: Chances are business owners can find a number of festival or marketplace opportunities in or around their communities each month. Some of these festivals may be large scale events like annual Christmas bazaars, while others might be more toned down affairs that occur each week. Business owners can research local festivals, paying particular attention to how communities market the events and which businesses attend them. Community turnout is another significant factor to consider. Such research can help business owners determine which festivals best suit their businesses and what they’re hoping to accomplish.

THE GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR
If
According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.
