I’ve banished Winter, saith the Spring, Awake! arise, ye flowers! Brisk breezes blow, Bright sunshine glow, And rouse the young Year’s powers. ~ Henry James Slack (1818–1896), The Ministry of the Beautiful, “Conversation IV: Spring-time on the Western Coast,” 1850

WHAT IS COMMUNION? Christians believe that Holy Communion is the receiving of Jesus Christ through the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is comprised of bread and wine, although some denominations believe that it is not necessary to receive the Lord’s body and blood in each, instead feeling that Christ is present fully in either the bread or wine. Catholics believe that through the process of transubstantiation the bread and wine before the priest becomes the body and blood of Christ. According to catechism and the liturgy, as soon as the Institution Narrative begins, the Lord is present in the elements of bread and wine. The institution of Holy Eucharist occurred during the Last Supper. As stated in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Jesus instructed His followers to use bread and wine to remember the sacrifice He was going to make when He died on the cross for people’s sins. While much fanfare is understandably afforded to First Holy Communion, Christians receive the Eucharist every day at church services all over the world. Receiving communion is not a singular act. People recognized that every time they gathered around a table to eat and drink, it provided an opportunity to recognize and thank Jesus. Adults can reinforce this concept to children by explaining that receiving Communion each week at Mass is just as special as receiving it that first time in spring. Holy Communion is an opportunity to enter into an intimate union with Jesus Christ, who Christians believe provides holiness and grace to all who are willing to receive Him.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

Hello I am Pixie. My mom usually just calls me a freeloader. She’s all mad she had to go to Wegmans to buy eggs this winter. I’m not a machine, lady. Sheesh. I like to spend my days rolling in a sunny dirt pile, eating bugs, snacking on my moms vegetable gardens, and pretending I’m tough to my friends. I may be the smallest but I’m a boss! I’m sick of all this white stuff and looking forward for some greenery to snack on. Happy Spring!

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Roommate Stuck With Unwanted Kitten DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The local shelter in our college town does not allow college students to adopt pets. However, my roommate managed to get around the rule by using her boyfriend’s address, and she brought a kitten into our dorm. I told her to take it back, as pets are not allowed in the dorm (except for service animals). She ignored me. Two weeks later, she dropped out of school and moved in with her boyfriend, leaving behind most of her stuff -- and the kitten! If I tell our R.A. I could get in trouble. What can I do? I don’t want anyone to know what college I’m at, so sign me -- Beth in Boston DEAR BETH: Honesty is the best policy here, and the welfare of the kitten is at stake. Contact the shelter right away. Explain what happened with your roommate, that you’re caring for the kitten as she’s abandoned it, but that you aren’t allowed to keep it. Next, tell your R.A. what happened. Call your parents, too, so they’re aware of the problem and will support you if there’s an issue with the school. Your roommate used either her name or her boyfriend’s name and his address. The shelter will have this on file, so they can verify that you’re not the one who’s responsible for the kitten. They’ll give you instructions on how to bring the kitten back and surrender it to them. If there’s a surrender fee, they should bill the boyfriend and your ex-roommate. Likewise, any penalties assessed by the college should fall on your ex-roommate. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

(585) 533-1530 STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Donkey Kong got his curious moniker because his creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, believed “donkey” meant “stupid” in English and wanted to convey the impression that the character was a “stupid ape.”

Adopting a Shelter Dog

DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply.

Here are some important questions you should ask:

• If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)? Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

* Research says that the best time of day to exercise is in the morning, but the truth is that the best time for YOU to exercise is when you will go through with it. So, try out different times of the day, and when you find one that fits, schedule it in your daily planner and block the time out at least three times per week. * Making your own flavored yogurt is cheap and much better for you. You can avoid a lot of added sugar. Start with plain, unflavored yogurt and add: pureed fruits, toasted oats, honey, vanilla or almond extract, or plumped-up raisins (add enough hot water to cover a tablespoon of raisins and let sit for a minute or two). Yummy.

SIGNS YOUR PET HAS FLEAS Restlessness: Fleas are uncomfortable and can upset pets. If your dog or cat is acting out of sorts, fleas could be to blame.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT CAT REPRODUCTION

• Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet?

* After your dishwasher has run its course, open up the door and let the dishes air dry. On cold days, there’s the added bonus of humidifying the house with the steam that escapes.

* Metal shower hooks can be used in the sewing basket to hold safety pins. They can be used in a jewelry box to corral costume rings as well.

• Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown?

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* When you make a meringue, be sure to spread it all the way to the crust on all sides. If you do, it will not shrink.

* “If you stick the end of your celery stalks in a cup of water and rocks (or in some very damp dirt), they will begin to regrow. This is a great way to have a never-ending supply of celery. You also can regrow scallions from the root end.” -- Y.L.J. in Missouri

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog? — Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana

There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies.

By JoAnn Derson

Cat pet parents must be especially diligent in their quest to squelch reproduction to help control cat populations. According to The Spruce: Pets, female cats that are not spayed will come into estrus (heat) as early as age four months. The animal health resource BondVet says a cat can go into heat as often as every two to three weeks. Generally, though, cats are seasonal breeders, indicates the United Kingdom-based RSPCA, which means heat cycles slow down in autumn. Another thing to note is that cats do not enter menopause like people and other animals. That means a female cat can continue to reproduce well into her senior years.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

CORBY’S COLLISION

Look for EV-friendly lodging: Many hotels now feature charging stations exclusively for guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be charged overnight while guests are asleep, leaving more time to travel in a vehicle that’s fully charged each morning.

SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER Keep cargo off the roof. Rooftop cargo boxes can be convenient when traveling on vacations. However, researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory report that such boxes can reduce fuel economy by a significant percentage depending on where drivers are driving. City drivers with rooftop cargo boxes may experience a 2 to 8 percent decline in fuel economy, while vacationers traveling at interstate speeds may notice a decline as high as 25 percent. Cargo boxes are convenient, but they’re not very aerodynamic, so it’s best to remove them after returning home from vacation.

AUTO SECTION

FACTORS THAT IMPACT AUTO INSURANCE PREMIUMS Auto insurance rates vary from person to person, even though it may seem like the offerings are the same. But no two drivers are the same, and certain factors may be affecting drivers’ auto insurance premiums without the motorists even realizing it. Recognizing which situations can increase or lower costs can help drivers get the best rates and coverage needed. Although it can be tempting to reduce the price of insurance by choosing lower amounts of coverage, there are other ways to make insurance more affordable. • Move. Insurers typically look at where a person lives when calculating rates. Those people who live in highly populated, urban areas likely will have higher premiums than others who live in more rural towns. That’s because greater population density often translates into more people on the road - and a greater chance for insurance claims due to fender benders or theft. By moving, a person may be able to cut rates. • Gender and age are factors. One can’t step into a time machine, but it’s helpful to know that growing a little older can lower insurance premiums. The financial advice source Money Crashers say that young men usually incur higher rates than young women because statistically men get into more accidents. However, as a person moves into his or her senior years, the roles reverse. Older women may see higher rates than men the same age. • Keep make and model in mind. The type of vehicle driven can affect insurance premiums. Certain insurance carriers will increase premiums on vehicles that are more susceptible to damage. Flashy sports cars or those that do not score as highly on vehicle safety ratings calculated by industry experts may result in high premiums. Vehicles that are desirable to car thieves also may cost more to insure. Researching vehicles prior to purchase and checking the rates for those cars or trucks with insurance companies can help keep costs low. • Commuters may pay more. Individuals who use a car for business or frequent commuting may pay more than people who drive less because statistically there is a greater risk for an accident, says State Farm. Reducing commute times can lower premiums. • Tie the knot. Insure.com says married couples have been found to be less of a risk to insurance providers statistically than those who are single. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that single drivers were twice as likely to be in an auto accident as married drivers. Combining policies also can help married people save. • Follow the rules of the road. Drivers who have moving violations, drink and drive or engage in otherwise risky behavior behind the wheel may see their rates soar. Insurance companies weigh factors such as driving record, age, locality, and more when assessing premium costs. Drivers have some room to get lower rates by knowing the factors that determine their premiums.

Spring Yard Clean Up & Gutter Cleanings

Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas. In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil. For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. STORING TOOLS PROPERLY REDUCES INJURY RISK AND PROMOTES ORGANIZATION

REMODELING

Whether homeowners have a handful of tools or an entire collection of equipment, proper storage of these items means the difference between staying organized and safe or having to waste time looking for tools and running the risk of injury. Tools often gravitate to other rooms of the house or become misplaced. When they’re brought out for use, tools may not be returned to the toolbox or shed, taking up residence in drawers or closets or just being left out in the open. Improper storage of tools also may create safety risks for the persons doing the renovation and other members of the household. The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that hundreds of thousands of injuries treated at emergency rooms are related to power tools and workshop equipment. While the majority of these injuries occur while using the tools, improper tool storage can still cause injury. By taking care of tools and keeping them orderly, homeowners can lengthen the life expectancy of their tools and reduce the likelihood of tool-related injury.

The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Bessie Smith (1894-1937): While there are female instrumentalists in the genre of jazz, in the early days many, such as Bessie Smith, were vocalists. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith would come to be known as “Empress of the Blues” thanks to her powerful voice. By the 1920s, Smith was among the highest paid black performers. Tragically, Smith’s life was cut short when she died from injuries sustained in a car crash on her way to a show in Memphis in 1937.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Diet Is a Powerful Tool to Improve Heart Health

Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a strong history of premature heart disease in my family, and I have been having some unpleasant side effects of blood pressure medicine. I decided to try a completely plant-based diet: grains, vegetables, legumes, fruit, seeds and nuts. After about a month on the new diet, my total cholesterol dropped 44 points to 159, and the other numbers went from borderline to normal, as measured by my cardiologist. My blood pressure, which was often high in the mornings (typically 150+/90), was 118/68 this morning. I’ve only lost about 5 pounds in the past couple of months, and I’m probably still 8-10 pounds overweight. I am pleased with the results, but why didn’t any of my doctors recommend this? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: Diet is a powerful tool for improving overall health, especially heart health. I believe it is underemphasized by most physicians. Changing from a meat-based diet to a mostly plant-based diet often prompts improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. Your results are better than most, but by no means unheard of. You haven’t said how you feel, but many people feel more energetic as well. Many others are able to come off of some (occasionally all) of their medications, which of course reduces side effects. Why don’t physicians recommend it? I think it’s a combination of reasons. Some doctors don’t realize how powerful the effects of dietary change can be. A good deal of patients are highly resistant to making changes, so physicians are used to their dietary advice failing. Also, taking the time to get an accurate diet history is hard, personalizing dietary advice is harder, and writing a prescription is easy. It is not necessary to have a 100% vegan diet like yours to experience a benefit. A mostly plant-based diet has substantial benefits. It’s easier for some people to make incremental changes. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Promote Healthy Kidneys Healthy kidneys are som ething m any people take for granted. But those w ho w ant to do everything they can to keep their kidneys healthy can consider the follow ing tips. • Stay hydrated, but avoid overhydration. Adequate hydration definitely prom otes healthy kidneys. But overhydrating has not been proven to enhance kidney function. Adults should drink betw een four and six glasses of w ater per day. • Exercise. Regular exercise benefits various parts of the hum an body, including the kidneys. High blood pressure and diabetes are tw o of the biggest risk factors for kidney disease, and regular exercise can reduce a person’s risk of both conditions. How ever, overexertion can strain the kidneys, so avoid going too hard. • Speak w ith a physician before taking vitamin supplements or herbal remedies. Excessive supplem entation can harm the kidneys. Discuss any supplem ents or herbals rem edies w ith a physician before taking them . • Quit smoking. Sm oking decreases the blood flow in the kidneys, decreasing their ability to function at optim al capacity. Sm oking also increases a person’s risk of high blood pressure and cancer of the kidneys. • Eat healthy. A healthy diet decreases a person’s risk for high blood pressure and diabetes. Adhering to a healthy diet and controlling portion sizes can help control w eight and blood pressure and contribute to healthy kidneys as w ell. • Get screened. Adults w ho have been diagnosed w ith high blood pressure or diabetes should m ake sure their physicians screen for kidney dysfunction during routine appointm ents. Page 13

Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

HOW TO INVOLVE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE IN AGRICULTURE Emphasize technological advancements in the field. Modern young people are growing up with technology all around them, but few may be aware of the vital role technology plays in the agricultural sector. Young people’s ears may perk up upon hearing terms like “robotics” technologies are now a big part of life on the farm. Recognition of that may compel more young people to pursue careers in agriculture.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Living on Social Security

We’ve now experienced our 2022 Social Security benefit amount for a couple of months, the 5.9% increase. How are you doing? The problem is that the COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) is calculated from July to September the year before. Yes, prices were inching up then, but by December, we were seeing the writing on the wall when the annual Consumer Price Index was already up 7%. Add to that the hefty Medicare Part B increase to cover the cost of Aduhelm, the Alzheimer’s drug most of us will never take. Even though the price was forced down (from $56,000 per patient per year to $28,200 per year), our increased Medicare cost per month won’t come down. Seniors, especially those who only have Social Security for income, are struggling, and not only at the grocery store. Heating costs, gas for our vehicles, furniture, clothing ... they’ve all gone up. The dilemma, some say, is that the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (which establishes the Cost of Living Adjustment) doesn’t take into consideration our spending patterns. We don’t have the same needs as wage earners and clerical workers, and spend much more on medical and housing, for example. If you haven’t retired yet or if you still have a paycheck coming in, reconsider any plans you have for retirement until your savings are substantial. When you think you have enough, do an experiment before you stop working: Calculate your expected Social Security benefit per month and live on that amount for a long time, at least several months. Six months would be better. What looks fine on paper might not actually be fine when it comes to living on those limited dollars. And remember that the longer you wait before claiming Social Security, the higher your benefit will be when you do. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

March 29th Proclaimed Vietnam War Veterans Day in Livingston County BY JULIE BARRY

T

he Livingston County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed March 29, 2022, as Vietnam War Veterans Day in Livingston County. This date marks the withdrawal of the last U.S. Troops from South Vietnam. The date honors those who served during the Vietnam War, one of the longest military conflicts in American history. In total, more than 3.4 million service members were deployed to Southeast Asia. 2.7 million served in the designated war zone, 153,000 were wounded, and over 58,000 were killed in the theater of operation during the war. The names of 4,120 fellow New Yorkers are among the deceased listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., said Livingston County Veteran Services Director Jason Skinner. “We mark this day to honor those who bravely fought for their country and to ensure we never forget their service and sacrifice,” explained Skinner. “Vietnam veterans endured unspeakable hardships and risked their lives fighting for the ideals of democracy.” Several people joined Skinner in commemorating the bravery of these soldiers on March 29th. Of the 58,318 names listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, 21 of them called Livingston County, N.Y., home. They are Gerald Dailey, Arnold Duryea, David T. Fellows, Paul R. Fusco, John W. Geary, Donald Graves, Robert C. Henderson, Irwin Knickerbocker, Gerald P. Metott, Raymond Miles, Robert Prete, James E. Pringle, Francis Rosebrugh, James Schulz, Robert P. Sickles, James N. Sweet, Patrick Tremblay, John Ugino, Edwin F. Upright, James Widener, and Charles D. Wilkie. The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 amended title 4 of the United States Code, Section 6(d) to include National Vietnam War Veterans Day as an important occasion on which the flag should be raised. STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING A will is an important component of estate planning. Without clearly and legally spelling out your wishes, there is no guarantee that those wishes will be honored. It will be up to a state or province to make potentially lifealtering decisions that can impact your surviving family members, and the only way to ensure your wishes will be carried out is to put them into a will. Although men and women can write their own wills, many people prefer to seek the assistance of an attorney, who can make sure all necessary details are included in the will.

John Wayne Sams March 12, 2022 John Wayne Sams, age 75, of Leicester, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, NY. He was born on Eglin Airforce base; he was a proud Marine following in his father’s footsteps by joining USMC. John served in the Vietnam War era as an aviator, flying F-4 fighter jets off of aircraft carriers, including Kennedy and Midway. After his military retirement, he spent 10 years with Gwinnett County Sheriff department in Georgia before retiring and moving to Western NYS. After moving to NYS, John drove tour buses for Niagara Scenic. Though John lived all over the world, including Hawaii and Alaska, he most loved living in western NYS. He would comment almost daily that there was no other place in the world even comparable to the people, scenery, and seasons of western NYS.

THE RIGHT WAY TO LEAVE A JOB Don’t shirk responsibilities. It can be tempting to slack off when another job awaits. The popular job-hunting site Monster.com says it can be human nature to do less when long-term accountability is removed. However, you never know when you might need a referral or even a new job. Leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of your employer at the end of your work history can put a black mark on your employee record.
