A BRIEF GLIMPSE INTO THE MIND AND INSPIRATION THAT IS HENRIETTA POET, KAREN FARIS
BY SUZIE WELLSWhat inspires you to write (poetry and otherwise)?
Inspiration is a tricky concept because while you can have ashes of ideas and sometimes things pour out of you, the truth is that you have to write, create, and be creative for that inspiration to nd you. Inspiration is about connections. It’s about your brain being ready to nd new forms and see things in a di erent way. It comes from hard work. If you are sitting around waiting for inspiration to hit before you even start, you will never start. What inspires me in my poetry is the absurdity of modern-day existence. Needless to say, I have a lot to work with right now.
How would you describe your writing habits?
Writing is a muscle. e more you write, the easier it is to write and think in whatever form your creativity takes, whether it be poetry, prose, non ction–anything, really. e actual form isn’t as relevant as the practice of it. is applies to all art practices. Because I am also a visual artist, I don’t necessarily write every day, but I do practice my art every single day and there were many, many years where I wrote every single day.
What are your favorite topics or themes to write about?
e absurdity of modern existence. I mean really. ere is lots of fodder there for my performance poems. Also, I am fairly political in my poetry with an eye towards environmentalism, social justice, and “women’s issues,” which o en, if not always, intersect. e world we hand down to our children is a mess and grownups refuse to do anything about it except ght about it, so I write about that. Do you ever worry or overthink about anything in particular when you write?
Overthink. Overwrite. All the time. Wreck a poem by trying to do too much or too little with it. at’s why I save every version so I can backtrack if I veer too far from a poem’s charted course. You hear writers talk about spending days taking commas in and out or changing an opening line back and forth. Don’t do that. Write it and move on. en come back a week, month, or year later to look at it. Writing is a long game. Some things need time to complete. What writing groups/networks do you connect with?
I sort of bop around because I practice many di erent kinds of art. Artist Breakfast Group is one of my favorite inclusive Greater Rochester groups. ey meet every Tuesday morning at 8:15am. See their website or FB page. Various groups and events operate out of Before Your Quiet Eyes Bookstore on Monroe Ave. and at Books ETC out in Macedon. Ken and John both o er supportive places for writers and artists at any stage in their careers.
What are your favorite/greatest accomplishments as a writer/poet/ human being?
One of the great things about being an artist is the ability to touch people’s hearts and to spread compassion and kindness by sharing one’s humanity because we don’t practice this enough in our competitive, capitalistic world. e world and its resources are nite, which is not something we are willing to deal with and yet we must. Being able to bring people into a world of dialogue and conversation rather than divisiveness is always gratifying.
What role does creative writing and/or poetry play in everyday life?
Being creative in some way is part of the human existence. Whether you write or garden, we bene t from exercising our creativity. Don’t feel like you can only do one thing either. Write. Play music. Learn how to do bonsai. It’s all from the same creative well and is important for daily existence. In our hectic, chaotic world, the practice of an art form gives your mind space to expand and relax, gives it an opportunity
to learn and be renewed as well as feel satisfaction that you did something that inspired you. What advice would you give an aspiring writer?
My advice for a beginning writer is that every sentence you write prepares you for the next sentence, so just write. Do not be afraid of your delete button and use it o en. A poem doesn’t have to be great for it to exist. In fact, most writing isn’t good, but you won’t get to the stu that matters without crumpling up a lot of paper. Equally important is to read everything! Go out to see other writers when they read. Go hear music. Go to the theatre. Street art. Whatever interests you. Just get out there and see what’s happening. And nd a critique group to read your work. If people just say “oh, that’s nice” or “I liked it,” you will never get better. Being open to seeing what other people see in your work will help you grow as an artist and will help you not only to learn your cra , but how to cra a piece aligned with your intentions.

* On April 15, 1912, the British ocean liner Titanic sinks into the North Atlantic Ocean about 400 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada, two hours after hitting an iceberg. With 16 watertight compartments, the Titanic was considered unsinkable.

Thank you DePaul Rosa's Villas and Roberts Wesleyan University of Chili, NY
I am an elderly, 78 years young woman who lives at DePaul Rosa’s Villas in LeRoy, currently attending sessions of Occupational Therapy training presented by students from Roberts Wesleyan University. Each of these students have added value to my life with their refreshing outlook on the future of their careers. I am so thankful for these sessions and appreciate the students’ willingness to interact with the tenants of this facility. When the students depart from the sessions, I feel good as if I had a hug. The students brought happiness and joy to my day. There are a few tenants who are not from this area who feel isolated with their medical issues. The students bring hope, optimism and give inner strength to the elderly. The students are an inspiration to all of us attending the sessions, as they go above and beyond with care and consideration. The future lies before them and God bless these young students.
Thank You Honeoye Falls Lima Students
My friends and I went to the Senior lunch and preview of Guys & Dolls. We were amazed. The lunch was excellent! The student servers were polite and they did a wonderful job making people feel welcomed. The play was so much fun. The students, actors, musicians and behind the scene workers were very professional and the play was perfection. My friends were so happy to come for the afternoon and had a great time. We are all looking forward to next year. We had so much fun from the time we walked in the school until we left.
Great Service!
Throughout the winter the folks working at Kwik Fill in Lima always did their jobs with smiles on their faces and a nice greeting and thank you, so thank you all for your good work attitude!
Junk Area
I am writing this with the concern that a recently appointed Historical Area of the village has turned into a junk yard. There are now 2-3 containers filled with junk, 2-3 RVs (not running) filled with junk. 2 full sized boats. Busses filled with junk. Non-running car, 2 plows, multiple lawn mowers and even more junk. This has become an eye sore not only for the residents and the entire village, but is this what we want people to see as they visit our village? THIS IS ALLOWED IN A HISTORICAL AREA? Why has the village board or the mayor not said anything? I have a good idea why not. This has brought feral cats, mice, rats, raccoons, and even skunks to the area. It has become a hoarding area. This needs to be cleaned up. Very sad for an area that even when it was empty added character to the village. Now it has become a junk yard!!
Donating
Why do multibillion dollar corporations have their employees solicit at the checkout for donations? Whether you’re put on the spot for an answer or the computer’s check out screen has a button to donate money for whatever the charity of the week is, do corporations really need tax write offs? Major corporations are notorious for avoiding taxes. If you like to donate, please send it directly to the charity or cause. You’ll feel much better for your participation.
NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK APRIL 16–22
Most often unpaid, volunteers generously donate a part of their lives to do the work that nobody else likes to do — cleaning up after the event, fostering shelter dogs, chaperoning field trips, or helping the librarian; there are so many areas requiring volunteers. This month, we salute them for their unwavering services to businesses and communities and hold aloft their examples to inspire young and adults towards volunteerism.

Without volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to host events or held programs as easily as we do today. Since most of these events are extremely important for communities and businesses, volunteers fill a critical gap in service.

Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, butagoodruleofthumbistomark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distantsecond.
Q&A Master Gardeners with the
When is too early to plant directly outside? How do I protect my early plants from the frost we may very well still have?
There are at least three reasons for waiting until at least mid-May for planting young plants outdoors unprotected: you want to avoid too cold weather, you want the soil to be warm enough, and you want your plants to be big and tough enough to survive. A covering like a cloth sheet can prevent frost from damaging plants if the soil is warm, but if the temperature falls below freezing, the plants are still likely to die.
The average freeze date is the end of April. Soil temperature at planting time should
be at least 50°. Your young plants should have at least three sets of leaves, and they need to get “hardened off” with gradual exposure to outdoor conditions of sun, wind, and changing temperatures. Often there is no frost after mid-May, but you need to check the long-range weather forecast before planting: the nighttime low temperature should be above 40°; 50° is even better for most young plants. Plants including broccoli, lettuce, and other greens and root vegetables can be planted outside in late April, while warm weather plants like tomatoes and squash need to wait.
A cold frame could enable you to start your plants outdoors. You could buy one, or some people build their own. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.Complex Jargon Prevents Patient From Understanding Diagnosis
DEAR DR. ROACH: After many bouts of pain in my left leg, I was referred for an MRI. They diagnosed me with left lumbar radiculitis, spondylolisthesis and lumbar spondylosis. There are many people in my independent living facility who have gotten similar diagnoses. As an RN with a master’s in nursing education, I have a question: When the diagnoses are made, do doctors not explain the problem in layman’s terms? I only found out what my list of diagnoses were from a physical therapist, to whom I was referred. -- N.F.P.
ANSWER: Doctors certainly should explain their diagnoses in language appropriate for their patients. We can forget that the language we use is sometimes incomprehensible, but that’s not an excuse. A patient should always feel comfortable in saying they don’t understand a diagnosis, or any other word or phrase their doctor uses, and ask for more explanation. Many of the most effective communicators I have seen not only ask the patient whether they understood, but have made sure their patient can explain it back to them. In your case, these specific diagnoses are generally not well-known by nonexperts, and I am disappointed that they did not give you an explanation. Lumbar radiculitis is essentially sciatica -- it’s an inflammation of the large bundle of nerve roots, which usually causes pain down the leg into particular locations, based on which nerves are being affected. It is not a specific diagnosis, as it doesn’t say what is causing the damage to the nerves. Spondylolisthesis is a condition where one vertebra overlaps another one below it (front to back, not side to side). Very mild spondylolisthesis will not cause any symptoms, but more severe cases can cause damage to the nerve roots. Spondylosis of the lumbar vertebrae is a nonspecific term signifying degeneration of the spine, usually due to osteoarthritis and often including degeneration of the disks in between the vertebrae. So, these diagnoses together suggest that you have osteoarthritis of the spine, along with a displacement of one vertebra over another, causing damage to the nerve roots of the spine. These conditions would be likely to cause the back and leg pain you have on your left side.

MAKE FLOORS SHINE LIKE NEW
Restoring shine to flooring involves making sure the floor is clean. Dirt and grime can diminish the color and look of flooring. Homeowners are urged to use products designed for their particular flooring material, such as wood, laminate, stone, or vinyl. Products oftentimes are not interchangeable. Begin by thoroughly sweeping or vacuuming the floor. Clean along all surfaces of the floor, including under furniture where dust and dirt tends to accumulate. Use the hard-floor setting on a vacuum to avoid having the brush rolls scratch or damage the flooring. Laminate can scratch easily and hardwood flooring is not impervious to dings and scratches. Quite often a dry mop or a static-charged mopping cloth effectively picks up debris left behind on many flooring surfaces.
Although many commercial cleaners can clean flooring, homemade mopping solutions are sometimes just as effective. Keep in mind that wood, laminate and vinyl should not be soaked in water. A little liquid can go a long way on these surfaces. Water and other liquids can seep between laminate and wood boards, potentially contributing to swelling and damage over time. Also, resist the urge to use too much soap. Soap can leave behind a residue that dulls the finish of the floor.
Vinegar-based solutions can work well on a wide variety of flooring types and help cut through any sticky residue left behind from cooking, cleaning and the activities of daily life. Many wood-flooring cleaners and polishes are oil-based to condition the wood in the process. Whenever making one’s own solution, test a small amount in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it will not damage the flooring.

WHAT IS A SMART HOME?
Refrigerators that inform their owners when it’s time to buy more eggs and thermostats that learn homeowners’ heating and cooling preferences may once have seemed like futuristic ideas straight out of a sci-fi movie. However, such products are no longeradreambutareality.
The term “smart home” refers to a residence that has appliances, HVAC, lighting, entertainment systems, security, and many more devices that communicate with oneanother.Suchdevicescanbe controlled remotely, according to SmartHomeUSA, an automation product retailer. Proponents of smart home technology say features can help people save money on utilities and conserve natural resources, all the while providing peace of mind to homeowners.
In 2016, 80 million smart home devices were delivered worldwide. That marks a 64 percent increase from 2015, according to the research data firm IHS Markit. The smart home trend is only expected to grow in comingyears.
Although there’s interest in smart home technology, the industry remains fragmented. Consumers are trying to figure out which devices are simply fun and which provide practical benefits. Furthermore, the range of smart devices is expanding rapidly, making potential compatability issues a concern. Companies that plan to educate consumers further about the advantages of smarthomefeaturesandareopen to standardization may have the bestchancesofsurvival.

Wilted grass: Many things can cause grass to wilt over the course of winter, so homeowners may have to put on their sleuth’s cap to determine why grass that was healthy as recently as late fall is now wilted as the spring bloom begins. Grass that’s adjacent to walkways and driveways might have wilted due to the application of deicing solutions. Such products can prevent the formation of ice on driveways and walkways. However, when they’re tracked onto the grass by people or animals or blown there by winter winds, grass can wilt. A deep watering in spring can flush any lingering solution from the lawn. In future winters, homeowners can be as careful as possible when applying de-icing solutions, making a concerted effort to avoid spreading any onto the grass and limited applications to areas of the driveway and walkways that are not close to the grass.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR
A new home bar requires barware and glassware. Various drinks are best served in requisite glassware and prepared with the right equipment. A home bar will benefit from a muddler, jigger, cocktail shaker, strainer, ice cube trays, and bar spoon. Glassware can include short glasses, tall glasses and wine glasses with stems. Martini glasses provide a chic look and are practical for those who prefer cosmopolitans and martinis.

IDEAS FOR FAST AND EASY ENTERTAINING
Serve breakfast without breaking a sweat. Treat overnight guests to a hearty breakfast without breaking a sweat in the morning. Put pancake batter in a squeeze bottle (like a well-rinsed ketchup container) and use it to easily pour batter onto the griddle. Experiment with shapes if you want something even more special.

By Sam MazzottaAdopting an Older Cat Can Bring Unexpected Issues
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We recently adopted a 12-year-old orange tomcat. Abel is neutered and well behaved, but he has some health issues that we didn’t bargain for. He’s overweight (we’re working on it) and recently needed a tooth pulled. He gets ear and eye infections frequently. I’m not about to give him up, but I wanted others to know that a senior cat o en has more medical needs than younger cats.
e tradeo is that he’s a sweet, gentle cat, well adapted to humans, and seems less inclined to escape from the house than a younger cat might. -- Kelly B., Salt
Lake CityDEAR KELLY: ank you for sharing your experience! Abel sounds like a wonderful cat.
Senior cats, age 11 to 14, do need extra monitoring. ey o en have health issues speci c to older cats, and can be more susceptible to infections, bad teeth, etc. Pretty much all the same issues humans face as we grow old!
As you’ve noted, Abel’s diet is really important. Not just to lose weight and keep it o , but to make sure he’s getting the right nutrition for a senior cat. A cat food formulated for older cats is helpful, but owners should work with the veterinarian to determine the amount and type of food to give their cat each day. Lots of protein is a must, as this article by VCA points out: vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/ feeding-mature-senior-and-geriatric-cats
Dehydration is another factor for older cats. Empty and re ll your cat’s water bowl each morning and monitor how much the amount decreases throughout the day to determine how much he drinks.
Finally, monitor your cat’s litter box habits. Write them down and take them to the next vet checkup to make sure there are no hidden health problems cropping up.
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET
Spring cleaning is an annual tradition in many households. After a winter spent cooped up indoors, spring cleaning can rejuvenate a household and provide a great chance to rid a home of a season’s worth of clutter.
Donating old clothes and cleaning out the garage are popular spring cleaning projects, but there are a host of additional tasks homeowners can tackle to freshen up their homes this spring.
I Invite You!
If you’re hated by religious church people, have tattoos, piercings, must drink beer, have to smoke, only wear jeans/ sweatpants/work boots/slippers, have no food or moneyI want you. God wanted me to invite you.
If you need a meal or ride money or just a friend, come. Let me kick religion out of the room and simply tell you the story of the Gospel and that Jesus loves you. Don’t worry one bit about churches, snobby Christians, phoney pastors, rules or membership. Look: the only people that Jesus ever got mad at were the religious people, not the messed up sinners. Truth!
See you April 30th at 1:00pm at the big huge Marriage Celebration room at the RIT Conference Center. Look for the sign “Mis ts Sinners Church” or under it the “Hippy Church.”
- ere is nothing religious here, I promise. All people, all religions, all denominations, are all invited. No restrictions. Come as messed up as you are or want to be. Sit in a chair, lay down on the oor, put your feet up on the chairs, I just don’t care.
Bring no money. A smoking area and alcohol bar is near the room. If nobody likes you, I will like you. If nobody will treat you nice - I will give you the best seat in the room and the best food. And if you need, I will give you a ride or money. All with a free Bible, all secretly. It’s God’s anyways.
- ere is no sign-up sheet. ere are no name tags. Nobody will call or bother you. Freely you come & freely you can go - at anytime.
Just simply come as a regular hurting person & simply hear about how crazy God is about you and the greatest gi to you of His love: Jesus.
So if you’re reading this and you’re the most rejected, hated, disgusted, sick, hopeless, poor, unwanted sinner there is - I want you!
Come freely. See me at the Conference Center, or the next month at the bar, or Friday nights at Happy Hour.
I will be the fat pastor guy wearing a Hawaiian shirt and carrying a falling apart, electric and duct tapped up, torn Bible. WWW.jesusisawesomeministries.COM
SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda CharlesLiving Long Lives in the Blue Zones
In several parts of the world there are large populations that regularly live into their 90s and even pass 100 years. ey’re called Blue Zones, those parts of the world where seniors live longer, healthier lives. It started as a National Geographic project to look for the secrets to longevity. ey were able to identify ve locations: Loma Linda, California; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; and Okinawa, Japan.
Fascinated scientists began to study these over-100 people and concluded that they had nine commonalities. ey are:
• e Blue Zoners move and exercise naturally, working in gardens and going about their lives with frequent walks.
• ey have a purpose to each day.
• ey do what they must to avoid stress. Some pray, some have happy hour, some take naps, but they intentionally do something.
• ey follow Confucius’ rule to stop eating when they’re 80% full, and don’t eat late at night.
• ey belong to a faith-based community of some kind.
• ey put loved ones rst and o en live with or near family members.
• e people around them are engaged in similar healthy behaviors.
To read the study about the Blue Zones, go online to www.ncbi. nlm.nih.gov, select PubMed from the dropdown menu and put “Blue Zones” in the search box. Look for the authors Buettner D, Skemp S. e heading includes “Lessons from the World’s Longest Lived.”
ere is hope for all of us to extend our lives if we incorporate some of what those in the Blue Zones have to teach us.
