Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.
HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR Look for EV-friendly lodging: Many hotels now feature charging stations exclusively for guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be charged overnight while guests are asleep, leaving more time to travel in a vehicle that’s fully charged each morning.

When tuning up your car, set the gap on spark plugs using the widest gap that the manufacturer recommends. Your car will run better, idle better, and will give you better gas mileage.

GVPS HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas. Page 4

Reborn Find a Fresh Start this Easter BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
• Seek professional health care help if necessary. Putting in the work but still struggling? Contact a health care professional. Hundreds of millions of people across the globe have had to confront issues affecting their mental health during the past two years, and health care professionals are prepared and ready to help individuals overcome those issues as the world returns to normalcy.
f grocery store shelves are any indication, Easter is here once again. After two pandemic Easters, it is hard not to feel a bit apprehensive at the prospect of a more “normal” holiday. Yet, despite lingering concerns, I believe many of you, like me, are doing your best to prepare for celebration and time together with friends and family. In many ways, new beginnings are what Easter is all about: new life and renewal. Even nature presents a spring slate wiped clean by winter. Still, starting fresh can be hard, especially after negative events and experiences in our lives. The past two years have brought isolation, unexpected loss, and general upheaval. It will take courage, hope, and a heaping dose of optimism to both recover from the last two years and to leave fear in the past, reborn with perhaps a heightened appreciation of everyone and everything we love most.
Struggling to enjoy this festive season? Try these 9 tips! • Recognize healing can’t be rushed. Give yourself time to adjust, noting that it will take time before a sense of safety and security returns. It could be a while before you feel like yourself again, and that’s not only acceptable, but normal. • Ask for help. The pandemic was proof that it’s impossible to go it alone through difficult situations. Don’t hesitate to rely on loved ones as you recover. The MHA notes that social support is crucial when healing from trauma and touts the value of sharing one’s story. Such sharing enables individuals to process their thoughts and feelings.
• Dealing with loss? Discuss the death of your loved one. The American Psychological Association (APA) notes that avoiding talking about a deceased loved one can lead to isolation and a disruption in the healing process. Speaking about the death of a loved one can help you understand what happened, and that understanding can facilitate the healing process. • Accept your feelings. The APA notes that it’s normal for grieving individuals to experience a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, and exhaustion. Consider speaking with a licensed mental health professional. Such professionals can recommend various strategies to cope with emotions that can sometimes feel overwhelming. • Celebrate your loved one. The APA recognizes that many people find the anniversaries of a loved one’s death to be especially difficult. The APA recommends individuals use such anniversaries as opportunities to celebrate their loved one’s life. Plant a garden in a loved one’s memory or honor them with a donation to a charity they supported. Such gestures can add some positivity to the anniversary and help in the healing process. • Take part in an activity that meant something to you and your deceased loved one. Doing something in memory of a loved one can help people cope. For example, plant flowers in honor of a deceased parent with whom you shared a love of gardening.
• Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establish old routines to restore a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.
Have a safe, happy, and healthy Easter!

LAWN & LANDSCAPING
KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Install motion detecting lights around gardens. Motion detection technology might be enough to deter nocturnal wildlife from trampling or eating gardens. Animals might be spooked and run away when lights suddenly turn on. A similar approach can be taken using noise instead of lights. Gardeners who hope to avoid erecting barriers around their gardens can put up posts instead, attaching aluminum cans or wind chimes to the posts that will make noise when animals come near. Much like light, noise can be enough to deter animals.

DID YOU KNOW? Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * It’s illegal in Vermont to prohibit anyone from putting up a clothesline.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * A great idea for mini ice packs: Freeze ketchup packets you get from takeout food. They are great for icing small bumps or bug bites. * Spread a teaspoon of peanut butter thinly on a paper plate. Then when the dog is busy with its treat, you can trim its nails. Or sometimes just having it nearby as a promised treat can do the trick to distract your pet. Good luck! * “One of the things I do each spring (and fall) is to go through my makeup and toss the old items. I also restock my first-aid kit and get new bottles of sunscreen and bug spray to keep in my car kit, so I will always have it around.” -- E.A. in California

* Love beans but trying to save a little money? Don’t be intimidated by dry beans; just rinse them and chuck them in the slow cooker. Add water according to package directions and cook on low for up to eight hours. After they cool, you can bag them in freezer-safe, zipper-top bags and freeze them for easy use later. * “On a health kick: Step one is to keep a food and activity diary for a week. You can get an idea of what you eat, what times of the day you are overeating and the areas where you can make improvements. Knowledge is power!” -- V.R. in Oregon * J.D. of Massachusetts writes: Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and a chamomile tea bag in a pan of medium hot water. Let cool slightly and soak feet for up to 10 minutes. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles COVID Phone Scams Thieves and scammers will do nearly anything to help us part with our dollars. In the latest one, as I write this, the thieves want to help me get the free COVID tests the government is sending out. I signed up months ago and received my shipment of four tests. The scammers, however, think I should have more on hand and have offered to help me order them ... for a small handling fee. That handling fee for the free tests? Thirty dollars, and giving them my banking information. No, I don’t think so. We need to be on our toes with these thieves. No matter what topic is on the news, they’ll find a way to turn it into a scam. You might get a call supposedly from a COVID contact tracer who asks too many personal questions, such as for your banking information. You might get a call saying we’re now supposed to get an additional booster and you can be put at the head of the wait list for a small fee. Or you might get a call saying you’re due to get another government relief check, but you have to pay the taxes first out of your checking account. Why, oh why do they target seniors? The answer is that we are perceived to have lots of money and that we’re not likely to report fraud. We’re also, unfortunately, too trusting and too polite. If you don’t recognize the phone number when someone calls, don’t answer. If someone hasn’t left a message, don’t call them back. If someone does get you on the phone and the conversation involves any pressure, time-limited offers or questions about your personal information, hang up. Remember, you are not obligated to be polite! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

When a person has a TIA, the symptoms are just like those of a stroke, but they last less than 24 hours before disappearing. However, that disappearance does not mean a person is in the clear, as a TIA is a serious warning sign of stroke.

Congratulations! Congratulations to the Village of Lima for earning the top Clean Energy award (one of only two in the Finger Lakes Region, the other being Canandaigua)! Not only can these clean energy achievements save village residents money, but the changes will also benefit the environment, helping to move the country into a sustainable future. I believe this was accomplished through bi-partisan efforts of the village board, which shows that beneficial things can happen when people work together. I hope other towns will be encouraged to do the same. Grateful A sincere “Thank you” to the gentleman who helped my 88-year-old husband when he fell in the Dansville Franklin Plaza Parking lot on Friday, April 8th. Your kindness was so very much appreciated. May God bless you abundantly. - His Grateful Wife & Family Honest People Thank you so much to the Geneseo Wal-Mart employee who turned my purse in at Customer Service. It had been a long and busy day. I left it in my cart without even noticing and was panicked at not finding it when I arrived home. Your honesty was a breath of fresh air. God bless you! Riga Rec Easter Egg Parade On Saturday, April 9th, Riga Recreation held its annual Easter Egg Hunt. It looked a bit different this year as a parade was held instead. The egg hunters met at the Churchville Commons and, led by the Easter Bunny, went up Main Street to Buffalo Road before they proceeded to the Village of Churchville’s Steedman Gazebo. They were then given Goodie Bags, could get an airbrush tattoo, and could guess how many jelly beans were in a gigantic water bottle. Huge thanks to: Churchville Lions and LEO clubs, Arlene’s Costumes, the Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Sue, Lily, and Addison (stuffing Easter eggs!) and, of course, the Easter Bunny! - David Thomas, Supervisor of Recreation ●

We live near the local town fire station. The siren is still activated and blows on average of 10 times each month. It seems that in this day and age of digital devices to be unnecessary noise pollution. We understand that firefighters and police receive alert messages on their phones or devices. The siren can only be heard in the neighborhood of the fire station and no longer serves a purpose. The siren is extremely loud, disturbing neighbors, sleeping babies, animals, and patrons eating at a nextdoor restaurant. It is especially disturbing to those with hearing aids, auditory sensitivity and other medical disorders such as those on the autism spectrum. To some, it is physically painful. Please consider shutting this down. Dear Shopping Fear, While it is sad that you didn’t feel safe enough to speak up when you witnessed something that was wrong, you are focused on the wrong issues. Perhaps instead of focusing on your fear of fellow citizens, you should ask why they needed to steal? Perhaps the cashier decided to keep quiet because she works a full-time job and still can barely afford to feed her family? Between inflation and stagnant wages, the ability to cover basic needs has become impossible for some fellow citizens. On the other end of the spectrum, there are business owners with steadily rising overhead and restrictions that are making it hard to justify remaining in business. Instead of allowing your fear to paralyze you and complaining, perhaps it’s time to pick a side: report the people stealing or ask if you can help cover their tab. Either one of these actions could have a potential ripple effect of positive change in your community.

Treat Leg Swelling With Horse Chestnuts?
Serving Our Community for over 20 years. Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
Accepting New Patients.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old male who was diagnosed two years ago with superficial venous insufficiency. Venous ablation was considered, but my cardiologist informed me that it most likely would not improve my condition. Therefore, the best treatment is to wear compression socks and elevate my legs as much as possible. I am following my cardiologist’s advice. I recently read a recommendation to take horse chestnut seed extract (Aesculus hippocastanum) and to look for products that have had the toxic substance esculin removed. I discussed this with my cardiologist’s physician assistant, and she saw no reason not to try it. What do you think? -- M.P. ANSWER: Some years ago, I saw a well-done study showing that horse chestnut extract is an effective treatment for the swelling associated with venous insufficiency. The dose usually studied has been 300 mg of the extract, standardized to 50 mg of escin, twice daily. The side effects noted in studies have been both infrequent and mild, and I have had several patients try it. Unfortunately, my patients’ experiences have not been successful. I don’t know whether that was just bad luck that I had patients who didn’t respond, or whether they did not get an effective medication. One big problem with herbal treatments in the U.S., which are sold as dietary supplements, is that the purity and standardization cannot be guaranteed. They are not well regulated, as compared with pharmaceuticals. I am sure there are ethical manufacturers who follow good practices, but the literature on supplements in general has shown that some products for sale do not contain the amount of the substance they purport to. There is no brand I feel comfortable recommending. Nonetheless, I think it is reasonable to try, especially in combination with standard therapy, which includes compression stockings during the day and at least three sessions of raising the legs above the heart for 30 minutes at a time.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Behavioral side effects Behavior also can be affected by stress, which may cause some people to abuse drugs or alcohol. Some may even turn to tobacco, either becoming a smoker or smoking more if they’re already smokers. Smoking has been linked to a host of negative physical side effects, including an increased risk of developing cancer. Angry outbursts, social withdrawal and overeating or undereating are some additional potential side effects of stress on the body.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.
Comfortable, Cozy Care given by pet-loving people!

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Social Media a Bad Idea When Rehoming Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read about Sherrie’s dilemma in trying to rehome her grandmother’s cats. Should she maybe put a notice on Facebook that the cats need a good home? -Gerry O., via email DEAR GERRY: On the surface, it seems like a good idea. But there are some dangers involved in rehoming cats using these routes. In fact, many publications and some social media sites -- most notably, Facebook -- do not allow posts about pets being available for free or for sale. The danger for pets is that they could go to a home that’s not going to meet their needs, where they may be abused. They may not even go to a home -dogs, puppies and even kittens have been obtained this way by promoters of illegal dog fights, or by others with bad intentions, where they meet a terrible end. For humans, the danger with rehoming via the internet is that the person they’re meeting may be setting them up as a target. Whether to rob them directly or initiate a con job to get even more money out of them, the danger is real. The best ways for Sherrie to get the word out about needing to rehome the cats is to talk directly to friends and relatives, let the veterinarian know and contact the local shelter. More information can be found by searching for “rehoming your pet” at the national Humane Society website (www.humanesociety.org). Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com. HOMETOWN Penny Saver
Hello, My name is
Maisie
(formerly Ani). I was found outside in the winter snow when I was a tiny kitten. My “mom” adopted me through Lollypop Farm four years ago, and now I’m a beautiful, healthy, and happy cat. I love to play and am very inquisitive. I have to know what’s going on in every room of the house. I have a stuffed kitten toy that I love. I often carry her upstairs to the bedroom at night and bring her back down in the morning. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

MAKE MEALTIME MORE ECO-FRIENDLY An eco-friendly lifestyle is anything but selfless, as such a way of life can pay both immediate and long-term dividends, helping men and women in the present day while also contributing to healthier futures for generations to come. As environmentalists and eco-friendly ordinary Joes no doubt already know, there are myriad ways to go green. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably more eco-friendly with relatively little effort. Stop handwashing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it’s full so even less water is wasted. Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals. According to EnergyStar®, toaster ovens consume between onethird to one-half the amount of energy as conventional electric ovens when cooking small meals, making them a far more eco-friendly option for men and women accustomed who typically cook small meals for one or two people. Shop with reusable shopping bags. Cooks know that great meals begin at the grocery store, so there’s no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Estimates suggest that as many as 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year. EnvironmentMassachusetts reports that such bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, even though their life expectancy is as high as 1,000 years. By relying on reusable cloth shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, shoppers can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cooking their own meals.

Recycle materials. Glass jars, plastic butter tubs, milk cartons, and other items necessary to prepare meals at home are all recyclable. Many local governments have weekly if not biweekly pickups of recyclable materials, making it easier than ever to ensure these items are given new life after being used. Men and women who reside in areas without such pickups can go it alone, collecting recyclable materials and periodically transporting them to nearby recycling centers. Mealtime provides a host of opportunities for eco-conscious men and women to embrace practices that protect the planet. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
