Look for EV-friendly lodging: Many hotels now feature charging stations exclusively for guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be charged overnight while guests are asleep, leaving more time to travel in a vehicle that’s fully charged each morning.

The Reader A 2017 survey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that women read more than men. Women read an average of 19.8 minutes per day, which can make a Mother’s Day focused on Mom’s love of books an ideal and unique way to spend the day. Kids can write Mom their own books, and Dad can help put them together. Dads can visit rare bookstores and look for original copies of Mom’s favorite books that she might not find elsewhere.
Created just for your big day, we've put together sets of stunning wedding invitations to perfectly match your style.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Dog Bitten in Snout Keeps Licking Wound DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Jesse” was bitten on the face by another dog, injuring his snout and nose so badly that it required several stitches. I can’t get Jesse to stop licking and pawing at the wound, and now he’s tearing out the stitches. The wound looks infected. What should I do? -Kamo M. DEAR KAMO: Head straight back to the veterinarian to get the wound treated for infection and closed up again. This time, have Jesse fitted for a cone-shaped E-collar. It’s jokingly called the “cone of shame,” but is an important medical device for helping to heal just such an injury. Dogs really don’t like E-collars, and they can cause stress, but if he’s able to paw at the wound, it must be worn. You can take it off Jesse at mealtimes so he can access his food, but it must go right back on. There are a few other protective collars available that are more comfortable, like padded rings, but these may not stop the pawing. Jesse’s also licking his nose, which is understandable since it probably feels weird and swollen and itchy. This can be a problem area because dogs naturally lick their nose throughout the day. The vet may give you medicine to help it heal or may recommend an overthe-counter antibiotic ointment. Put the medicine on as directed. Help reduce the chance of infection by having clean, fresh water for Jesse to drink (to clean his tongue before licking his nose) and replacing any manky old dog toys (which have a lot of germs) with clean chew toys. Don’t let Jesse sniff at or eat nasty stuff (dogs love roadkill and other animals’ poo) until the wounds heal. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

S E V RA Earth Day thanks! For the past 10 years, Riga Recreation has participated in the Monroe County Park's Earth Day celebration by holding an annual Pick Up the Parks event at all Monroe County Parks. This year's initiative at Churchville Park was an overwhelming success with 58 community members volunteering their time to pick up trash and tree damage due to recent high winds. We even had two bins filled with pharmaceutical waste products brought in. Many thanks to the following organizations that participated this year: Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Waste management, Churchville Lions and LEO Clubs, Newman-Riga Library, Chili Soccer Assn. and students from Churchville and Chestnut Ridge Elementary Schools. Many thanks to all! - David Thomas, Recreational Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you! Thank you to Bob Thompson for organizing and running the 5th annual Take Pride in Hemlock Litter Pick Up. Additionally, we would like to thank all the volunteers who came out to assist in this yearly project. We had all kinds of volunteers from Livonia school's National Honor society to a local business owner to several residents as well as Little Lakes volunteers all pitching in to make a difference. This year, it was noticeable that there was much less garbage. We feel that the "Take Pride in Hemlock" is spreading through this hamlet year-round. Keep up the great work! Grateful! What an amazing outpouring of folks who came to the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock for the free trees, shrubs, and plants giveaway on April 23rd! (Perhaps 100+ came early.) A big thank you to Tawn Feeney for purchasing the seedlings and handing them out in celebration of Earth Day. A number of people who didn't receive the giveaway came inside the Center for the first time and learned about what is offered here for them. Even if we ran short on trees, we hope you'll come back and take part in our many other events and classes. Thank you to all community members for their support of our activities.

Shameful It is a shame that the ship named after the Sullivan’s war heroes is in the disarray that it is. I can’t understand how a ship of one of the most powerful nations in the world could be let go to the point of sinking at the Navel Yard. This is a slap in the face to all Veterans and moreover the heroes it was named after and the ones who served on this ship. I am a Vietnam Vet, and I am appalled that this could happen. It is bad enough that Veterans have to wait 40 years to get a disability rating when pushed out of the service. Someone should be [held accountable] for the way this ship has ended up. Forgetfulness It appears to me that many people have forgotten how production all over the world seemed to come to a halt because of the COVID pandemic. These shutdowns caused shortages in many products, and thus prices for those products rose. These people also seem to have forgotten the backup in the ports that prevented shipments from getting to the marketplace, which also helped to cause shortages. I believe most of our economic problems can be traced directly to COVID. Be patient. Things will get better, hopefully sooner rather than later. Sensitivity please! To the woman who saw my father’s work van at my house and called his employer to try to report him for “goofing off.” His employer is very aware of his whereabouts and the fact that, unlike someone like you who always has access to bathroom facilities and a kitchen, he may be entitled to a break. May your husband and children always be entitled to the same considerations. In addition, my dad had just completed a messy job around the block from you. (Yes, we know you called!) He was unable to clean himself up thoroughly afterwards, as you would have been able to do in a home or office building. So, a convenient quick stop at his daughter’s house to use her facilities allowed him to, among other things, make himself more presentable before his next call and get water to go. I hope that if your loved ones have blue collar jobs one day, you will have gained more sensitivity to these issues. I would have addressed you in person, but I am much too angry, and I want others to be aware, as well.

533-1396 MOTHER’S MOTHER S DA DAY AY
The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served. Page 7

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Mental side effects Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
Senior Wishes
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Can Prilosec be Taken for More than 14 Days? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s the story with Prilosec? Doctors routinely tell people with GERD or acid stomach to take this forever. Yet it clearly describes only a 14-day treatment on the box. A physician assistant told me that because of a rare infrequent condition some users have that the manufacturer is legally bound to post the 14-day limit, but that the general population can safely ignore it. Can you enlighten and reassure those of us whose physicians have said to take it long term? -- C.D.C. ANSWER: The patient instructions in the over-the-counter versions of proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole (Prilosec), do recommend a 14-day course. However, longer courses may indeed be prescribed by a licensed prescriber, such as a PA. Even so, there are relatively few people who need lifelong medication. Those who do may have a condition such as Barrett’s esophagus, in which PPIs -- the most potent medical treatment to suppress stomach acid -- are necessary. They not only relieve symptoms, they are also prescribed in hopes of reducing the risk of developing cancer of the esophagus. The data on this are still not clear. For people with acid reflux (also called gastroesophageal reflux disease), PPIs are usually not needed lifelong. However, it may still be reasonable to use these drugs long term if the prescriber feels the benefit outweighs the risk. There are several risks of long-term use of PPIs. Stomach acids are important in protecting against bacteria, and two kinds of bacterial infections are more common in PPI users. The first is in the colon, especially of Clostridium difficile, where PPI users are about 30% more likely to be infected and may do so even without the antibiotic use that is the most common risk factor for C. diff. The second is pneumonia, although the apparent association may not be as strong as formerly thought. Low stomach acid may decrease absorption of vitamins and minerals, especially magnesium, iron and vitamin B12. PPIs were thought to increase the risk of a rare tumor, gastric carcinoid, based on data from rats, and of colon cancer. Those risks have not been seen in humans. Early data suggest increased risk of kidney disease and dementia. That risk appears to be small, if it even exists. Long-term PPI use has some risk of side effects and should be used only when there are benefits to PPIs that can’t be obtained with other treatments, including other medications and lifestyle changes. This especially includes better diet, weight loss when appropriate and not eating right before bed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE Don’t interrupt a conversation to text or answer a phone call. Many people now have no reservations about interrupting an ongoing conversation to text someone else or answer an incoming phone call. Such behavior is disrespectful to the person you’re speaking with and can have an adverse effect on your relationship with that person going forward.
* “If you add a teaspoon of sugar to your biscuit mix or to the dough for rolls, it will help them to brown well, and they will come out of the oven with golden tops.” -- J.R. in Michigan * Two ways to save money on laundry expenses: First, spring and summer are an excellent time to get into line-drying clothes -- especially towels and jeans that take longer to dry thoroughly in a dryer. Then, clean out and shorten your dryer’s vent hose to make your machine more energy efficient. It cuts down on drying time, too, saving you time AND money. * “Got an odd job coming up? Before you go out and purchase an expensive limited-use tool, check with friends and neighbors to see if you can borrow instead of buying. Check with local hardware stores to see if it’s cheaper to rent, too.” -- S.L. in Kentucky * “I have pets that leave hair and dirt on the couch. When I wash my cushion covers, one thing I always do is put them back on the pillows when they are not quite dry. They stretch better when they’re a little bit damp. I had a terrible time a few years ago when I let them dry all the way and couldn’t get them back on!” -- H.P. in Arizona * “To clean burned-on bits from your cast-iron skillet, scrub with a plastic scrubbie and salt as an abrasive. Dry immediately and rub with oil to keep moist.” -- R.T. in Ohio

Genesee Vaey Plein Air Painters Show f Final Weekend in Caledonia T BY AMANDA DUDEK
his weekend marks the final opportunity to view and purchase works in the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters Annual Show and Sale held at the Village Gallery in Caledonia. Opening with 60 oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings as well as pastels, this exhibition showcases many eye-catching scenes across the Genesee Valley. Produced by the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters, these select, high-quality works, featuring local outdoor spaces, were chosen, reviewed digitally, and juried by Master Level Artist, Kenn Erroll Backhaus. Plein Air painting is, essentially, painting in the outdoors, producing works which‚ “have been painted on site of the subject in the open air‚ (natural light).” Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters, Inc, established in 2005, is comprised of a group of artists who reside throughout the Greater Rochester, Genesee Valley, and Finger Lakes regions, and who‚“seek to capture the splendor of nature and the world around [them].” The Village Gallery owner and award-winning artist Bill White explains the attraction of Plein Air painting. “Plein Air painting has its origins with Impressionism with artists like Monet who would go and paint live from a subject as opposed to painting them in a studio,” he explained. Although White has been Plein Air Painting since the 1990s, he and his wife, Linda, did not move from Virginia to Caledonia until 2016. “I joined the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters,” he said. “I have been pleased to continue with artists of like interests. Sometimes, the group will schedule a painting event at a location, such as Mendon Ponds, and members are free to join in. Members can also paint on their own, which many of us do, also.” Having spent 39 years as a Professor of Painting at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia; having received grants from the Cabell, Mellon & Ford Foundations, and having been honored with the Kendig Individual Artist Award, Bill White not only owns and operates The Village Gallery, but he offers classes and lectures throughout the year, as well. White says it is important to artists‚“including those artists whose work is currently on display in the show‚ “to have people experience their work. “One of the qualities of our gallery is that we provide a venue for local and regional artists to display their work,” White said. “Painters, sculptors, photographers and other artists put their heart and soul into the art they make, and it is important for

people to come, experience, and appreciate the range and the quality of their work. Artists need an appreciative audience.” White notes that many of the shows sponsored by his gallery offer a People’s Choice Award to encourage visitors to look carefully at the artwork before them in order to vote for their favorite. What wonderful variety to appreciate with Plein Air painting! “The Genesee Valley, Greater Rochester area, and Finger Lakes Region offers a wide variety of landscape qualities, including farmland and barns and certainly the lakes which provide many waterways, creeks, and so on,” White observed. “There is a lot of variety and places to go and paint. In our show here, it is interesting to see how different kinds of scenes are attractive to particular painters. Some like wooded areas; others boats and docks and friezes along the water. I think it creates in the individual works a quality of expression unique to that artist because they like to work from it.” White notes that The Village Gallery will have additional shows throughout the year. “Our next show will have the theme of any work that is done in black and white (to include grays), nothing with colors,” he explained. “Drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture. It is open to anyone within a 25-mile radius. It is not juried or reviewed, so whatever comes in will be accepted. The Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters Annual Show and Sale will hold its final showings on Friday & Saturday, April 29th-30th from 11am until 5pm. Appointments are also available. On Saturday afternoon, April 30th, the artists will hold a paint out group event in Caledonia. “People will be Plein Air painting in one of our neighbor’s backyards on Main Street, in Tennent Park, and anywhere else they may find an interesting scene, anywhere in Caledonia that day,” said White, inviting everyone who can to stop by.

GENERAL CONTRACTING
HANDYMEN/WOMEN
BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Inspiration: One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING REASONS TO PLANT A TREE There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Surviving Inflation
Recent government figures outlined food price increases for one month. The numbers are grim. Fruits and vegetables went up 2.3%, the highest since 2010. Dairy went up 1.9%, the highest since 2011. Cereals and bakery items went up 1.1%. Averaged over the past 12 months, food prices have risen 8.6% (the highest increase since 1981), with poultry and fish climbing 13% and beef soaring 16%. Wow! We knew it was bad because each time we go to the grocery store, we’re spending more to get less. But to see the figures laid out in print just brings home how bad things have gotten. Bloomberg (www.bloomberg.com), whose economists we need to keep an eye on, predicts that this year we’ll pay an additional $5,200 for all household items (including gas, heating fuel and everything else) and services, which it calculates at $433 per month. We need to reconsider how we feel about food banks. We seniors generally don’t want to do that, saying, “Oh, others need it more.” Well, at this point, maybe we are those others? In a few days, I’ll be driving three of my senior neighbors to the food bank for the weekly pickup. It will be their first time, and they are nervous. But I made a scouting trip last week, parking across the street from the line of cars and walking over to talk to the person in charge. I was able to report back: No, they don’t take your name or ask questions (except maybe to ask if you’d prefer apple or orange juice). No, they’re not judgmental. No, it’s not leftover expired food, and the fruits and vegetables were fresh and lovely. The people were friendly and welcoming, happy to do what they were doing. Just go to the food bank. You won’t be judged. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.
DID YOU KNOW? Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons.
–– ISLAND: ISLANDS OF IRELAND
Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
