Celebrating
Spa treatment: If Mom is still as active as ever, then a day of pampering at a nearby spa is sure to please. Many luxury spas offer packages, especially around Mother’s Day, that make a full-on spa treatment a more affordable gift. Men and women can even accompany Mom on her trip and reap the rewards of being such a thoughtful son or daughter.
MOMENTS IN TIME
The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.
MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS
The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.
Now that... my kids are grown, I understand how much work and love it takes to raise and to keep a family together. The example of your strength, devotion, and patience is now rippling through the generations. Thank you! ~Forest Houtenschil, c.1980
Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family.
Shop Smart for Mother’s Day
Check expiration dates. Gift certificates and cards for particular stores or services are popular come Mother’s Day. But it is essential to check expiration dates on the certificates or find gifts, as there is a good chance Mom will put off pampering herself and you would not want the gift to expire before she has a chance to use it.

Lawrence Berger Crafts Poetry Built from the Title Out
BY SUZIE WELLS
Lawrence Berger’s poetic journey began in 1996, evolving into a professional pursuit by September 1999. Berger credits James Everet Jones, his first poetry teacher in Hollywood, CA, as a pivotal influence, his mentorship laying the foundation for Berger’s enduring passion for poetry.
Berger adeptly navigates couplets, free verse, and narrative poetry. Drawing inspiration from everyday encounters, Berger’s creative process is spontaneous and o en audience-driven, cra ing poems within seconds on stage from audience-suggested titles. Berger describes his style as “part stream-of-consciousness, partimprovisation, all Poetry!” He builds poems from the title out and prefers topics that motivate and inspire readers / listeners, aiming to leave a lasting impression on his audience.
Despite occasional self-doubt, his track record of publications and awards attests to his skill and dedication. Engaged in various writing communities, including Just Poets in Rochester, NY, Saturday A ernoon Poets from Alhambra, CA, and the Cobalt Poets global zoom network, Berger finds camaraderie and support among fellow wordsmiths.
Berger’s resilience extends beyond poetry; surviving ten car accidents that should have killed him throughout the years, he is tenacious. With a diverse literary portfolio spanning ten books, five movies, two shorts, a one-act play, seven seminars, and a CD, his impact reverberates far. He even won our 2023 Pen a Poem contest for his “Hungry Hungry Hearing Aids.”
Advocating for the therapeutic benefits of creative expression, Berger says, “Creative writing is an outlet for imagination. Everyone shouldspendtimegettingtheirideasout. Creativewritingisanoutlet for stress at low costs.” He also explains that poetic advertisements have been running for generations, and people o en forget that the lyrics of favorite songs are poetry, and “every time you sing along with the [songs] you are reciting poetry and that is a good thing!”
Berger encourages aspiring writers to find their voice by speaking their work aloud. He says, “When you say your work out loud, it helps you find your ‘voice.’” Upcoming engagements, such as the Literary Partners reading at the Writer’s and Books Foundation this June, highlight Berger’s ongoing commitment to sharing his cra with the world.
In Lawrence Berger’s poetry, readers find reflection of life’s tapestry – a blend of resilience, creativity, and the enduring power of words. He lives his signature phrase, “Always keep ideas brewing!” Connect with Berger at linkedin.com/in/lawrenceberger/
Listen for the Rhythm of the Music Man
Hey dude, you ready? Are you ready daddy O? is train is about to leave the station. C’mon y’all, Let’s go!
I first met him in the land where west meets east He dropped his eye in the middle of a midnight pearl and told us of the magic of just enough.
I next saw him in the land that advertises at there are no prostitutes within its borders whatsoever!
He was cooking up a pot of that Hobo Soup and told us that even bank presidents rode the rails.
I haven’t seen him in a while, I heard maybe he’s passed on Perhaps we’ll see each other again One day.
SH!
Wish upon a star and listen for the rhythm of the music man!

DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Labor and data from the U.S. Census Bureau, registered nurse is the most common occupation for women in the United States labor force. Slightly less than 2.1 million women worked as registered nurses in 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Such figures are harder to come by in regard to Canada, but Statista reports that the labor participation rate among women in Canada in 2018 was right around 64 percent. That rate marks a slight decrease from its 21st century peak in 2005, when 66.7 percent of women were active members of the Canadian workforce. In the United States, more than two million women worked as secretaries or administrative assistants in 2017, making these professions the second most common occupation among female workers. Elementary and middle school teachers was the third most common occupation for female professionals, employing more than 1.9 million women in 2017. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau also indicates that women have the lion’s share of jobs in an assortment of professions, including preschool and kindergarten teachers, secretaries and administrative assistants, childcare workers, and dental assistants. Women hold at least 92 percent of the jobs in each of those professions in the United States.

SIGNS OF WINTER LAWN DAMAGE
Brown patches: The National Association of Landscape Professionals notes that brown patches in a lawn often develop after heavy snowfall. Such patches tend to develop where large piles of shoveled snow were deposited, so homeowners can inspect alongside driveways and walkways. The NALP advises homeowners to rake away part of the brown patches first. If green tissue is emerging beneath, then the lawn will likely be fine in due time. However, if the area beneath is not green and surrounding areas are already turning green, homeowners may need to rake up dead tissue before applying topsoil to the affected spots. Once topsoil is spread, some grass seed can be spread and the grass should regain its green glory.

LOW-COST WAYS TO REVAMP LIVING AREAS
Establish the budget. Homeowners should figure out how many dollars they can designate to a living room makeover before purchasing supplies or hiring out the work. Figure out the scope of the remodel, visit stores or suppliers to price out materials, get estimates from contractors, and then plan for some unforeseen circumstances along the way to determine if this type of renovation is affordable. If not, scale things back until the project more closely aligns with your budget.
HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR
Establish a bar setup
Home bars can range from rolling carts to built-in wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt.
A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appliances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE
Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.
DID YOU KNOW? If the 1927 song “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream” by Howard Johnson, Billy Moll and Robert A. King is correct, then the world has been a noisy place for quite some time. Though the exact origins of ice cream are unknown, historians agree this popular treat has been around for a very, very long time. The International Dairy Foods Association says the origins of ice cream may reach as far back as the second century B.C. Though he wasn’t around back then, the fifth Roman Emperor Nero, who ruled from 54 to 68 A.D., might have been so fond of iced treats that he routinely sent runners into the Apennine Mountains to retrieve snow that he would then flavor with fruits and juices. That tale might be apocryphal, but there’s no denying ice treats have been enjoyed for a long time. And based on a 2018 report from Grand View Research, Inc. that projected the global ice cream market would reach roughly $79 billion by 2025, it’s fair to say ice cream will remain popular for a long time to come as well.

* On May 12, 1925, a Philadelphia radio station broadcasts the first all-star radio program featuring film actors and actresses. Sound films had not yet debuted, and it marked the first time that most listeners had heard the voices of film stars like Lillian Gish and Marion Davies.
* On May 13, 1956, Gene Autry’s musical variety show, “Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch,” airs its final broadcast after 16 years. The show featured short skits about cowboys and rustlers, along with musical numbers by Autry, “America’s singing cowboy.”
* On May 17, 1792, a group of 24 traders gather in lower Manhattan to work out the regulations of the speculative market. The result was the Buttonwood Agreement, a two-sentence contract that gave birth to the New York Stock Exchange.

Diabetics Receive Great Results From a Plant-Based Diet
DEAR DR. ROACH: Your recent column about treating diabetes left me wondering. Diabetes, as I understand it, is usually a result of too much sugar being consumed. But consuming carbohydrates is not that different because they are quickly converted to sugar through the human chemical processes. So, why are you promoting a plant-based diet that is high in carbohydrates?
Consuming protein, which is easily obtained by eating meat, seems to be the answer to reducing the consumption of simple and complex carbohydrates that are quickly converted to sugar in our body. I’ve switched to a high-protein diet (both plant and animal protein), and my blood sugar has been very well-controlled for a couple of years. -- F.B.
ANSWER: Diabetes is not a result of consuming too much sugar. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder where the cells that make insulin are destroyed by the body. Type 2 diabetes is a disease of insulin resistance and a relative inability to secrete insulin in response to a sugar load. In a person with Type 2 diabetes, consuming too much sugar in a short time overloads the body’s ability to respond, so their blood sugar goes up. It is persistent high blood sugar that is responsible for most of the damage to the kidneys, eyes, blood vessels and nerves.
I am careful about what I mean by a plant-based diet. While it’s true that a diet consisting entirely of maple syrup and orange juice would be extremely bad for a person with diabetes because of the concerns about blood sugar that you raised, a plant-based diet that is mostly vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fatty fish and nuts/seeds with moderate amounts of whole fruits does not raise blood sugar more than a standard Western diet.
The high fiber content of the legumes, whole grains and vegetables prevents rapid absorption, and the protein and healthy fat in nuts and fatty fish likewise slow stomachemptying. Finally, there is good evidence that people with diabetes have excellent results with this kind of diet.
You are right that protein is important for a person with diabetes, but many high-protein diets based on meat also have high amounts of saturated fat, which increase the risk for heart blockages. In addition, saturated fat is a major cause of disease and death in people with diabetes. However, it is possible to have a healthy, high-protein diet with care.

According to Age in Place, nearly 60 percent of available senior income is being spent on housing and healthcare, and those expenditures do not include transportation or food. The rising costs of many necessities can make it difficult for seniors to make ends meet and, as a result, certain money-saving measures are often necessary.

Pet Allergies Blossom in Spring
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 7-year-old cat, “Sunbeam,” has a tough time in the spring when the pollen starts to fly. He sneezes frequently, his eyes water and he scratches hot spots on his skin. I’ve tried many things to reduce the allergens in the home: I vacuum every other day, run an air purifier near where he sleeps and I brush his coat daily. TITLE: None of that seems to help. What else can I try? -- Harry in Pittsburgh
Send us a photo and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com Share With Us.
Or, Mail to: PO Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation
One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.
DEAR HARRY: You’re doing your best to reduce airborne allergens, and that’s great. However, because it doesn’t seem to be helping, it’s time to enlist the help of your cat’s veterinarian.
e vet can suggest some other ways to reduce allergens in the home, and will consider that Sunbeam is reacting to more than one issue -- not just pollen, but indoor dust or even the food he’s eating. ey will also check for any secondary issues that may be contributing to Sunbeam’s discomfort, like an ear infection or yeast infection.
Short-term treatment with a prescription medication, like a steroid or an antihistamine, may be necessary during the worst part of the season. ese will help reduce the intense itching and eye irritation, and should help clear up hot spots on his skin.
At home, try adding fish oil and probiotics to your cat’s food -- these supplements can help with itchy, flaky skin conditions. (I give my cat a teaspoon of plain yogurt daily to balance his gut bacteria.) An occasional bath, twice a month or so, using a pet shampoo that contains oatmeal will soothe his skin and wash away any lingering allergens on his coat.

Library Etiquette
While shopping at the Geneseo Dollar Store, I had to go back out to the car because I had forgotten my money. A woman inside paid for my laundry detergent when I got back. I want to thank her. Her kindness is appreciated. I will pay it forward.
A Sincere Heartfelt Thank You
My pregnant granddaughter was visiting April 28th from Michigan. She had a problem with a front tire and the tire shop was hesitant about only doing 1 tire on a four wheel drive. My granddaughter was not able to afford 2 tires and a front end alignment. A female customer graciously paid for both tires and the alignment. This lady will never know how very much her generous gift was appreciated. May God bless you. Thank you so much.
Please teach your children how to act in a library! School age children are coming in, talking loudly, watching/listening to rude videos/music on high, leaving trash and being very disruptive! The library is a public space for all, not a playground or circus.

Sidewalk Falls
I moved from the city to this lovely small village. I am handicapped and need a walker to get around. Several times I have tripped over uneven slabs of pavement. I took a tumble twice this past Winter. Complete slabs are crushed. Who is responsible for the sidewalk?

DID YOU KNOW?
Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise.Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.
Should you encounter a critter or ailing foliage, take swift and strategic action. Remove infected plants promptly, preventing the spread of disease to their companions. Embrace organic pest control methods, utilizing the powerof naturetorestorebalance. Remember, knowledgeisyourally.

A new year often sparks change. Many people aspire to change jobs at the dawn of a new year, and such changes are more frequent than one might think.
WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK
Write things down. A to-do list floating around in your head can become overwhelming. The physical task of writing things down and crossing items off the list one-by-one can help you sail through tasks effectively. If you’re a mobile person, jot the list down on the notes function of a smartphone or use a task app that syncs with calendar functions.
