To the couple in a [local town] convenience store who were concerned that a dog was left alone inside a car: you looked as you walked by, but with shaded windows you couldn’t see inside. You even went into the store, and an employee asked around about who owns the car. My wife told her I was inside. I was sitting in the back seat with our pet. THANK YOU, to the couple and the store employee, for taking the initiative.
Stupid Idea On this morning’s news was the report of another mass shooting in a school in Texas. It was suggested by someone, who I believe must have stock in one of the gun-producing companies, that teachers carry guns. Great. That means that there would be more guns that can fall into the hands of someone who should never have access to a gun, such as the young man who killed all those children and teachers in Texas. I wish that there would never be another incident like what was on the news, but if it should happen again, it might prove to be best if all the victims were family members of those who are against gun control. Maybe that would change their thinking on the need for even greater gun control measures than have ever yet been presented to Congress. Public Obscenity The 1st Amendment states that obscenity is not protected under the rights to free speech. No one has a right to tell everyone in society, regardless of age, to f*** off! Little children are being forced to believe this is acceptable? Come on, folks. Speak up! Call your town’s supervisor and demand action. It is a community that sets the standard according to the federal obscenity laws, so let’s unite and set a better standard for our community. Our town has an ordinance against marijuana sales. We can do the same thing for vulgar, profane displays in yards. Remember the frog in the frying pan? We are not so desensitized that we accept being told [this] every time we drive down our main road, are we? The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing, but you can do something. Please speak up!

Change it back! “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” That is the Second Amendment in our Constitution. It exists not because of hunting, or defending against foreign attack. The founders feared a standing army would present a clear and present danger to individual liberty: in other words, government tyranny. Guns are a necessary fabric to the security of a free state. Stereotyping I was taught stereotyping is morally and ethically wrong. I still believe that. Why is stereotyping in the media acceptable, and nobody seems to speak out? With a population of 300 million plus, Police Officers nationwide are “walking on eggshells” because of a few bad cops. Now, because one individual carrying out a horrific hate crime, [many] across our country are being stereotyped as racist and supremacist. In both examples, these crimes have been horrific and carried out by bad individuals. We need to stop the stereotyping all around. Stereotyping makes relations worse.

Holley’s Geometry in Construction Class Installs Classroom Barn at Homesteads for Hope BY B E T H N A S H
A
few weeks ago, the Holley Middle School/High School Geometry in Construction class installed the classroom barn they built for Homesteads for Hope (H4H). They transported their “work in progress” to H4H located at 2185 Manitou Road in Rochester and completed the installation of the barn to be used as a Social Garden Classroom. Holley math teacher Russ Albright and technology teacher Dylan Sharpe co-teach Geometry in Construction, with students rotating between math days and building days each week. There are 19 students in this year’s class, with the majority in 10th grade. The class helps students learn how math concepts can be applied to real-world problems to create solutions. Students combined their math and construction skills to build a 16’ x 32’ classroom barn for H4H this year.
Holley students are still working to complete the 2022 Geometry in Construction barn on site.
In the fall, students went on a field trip to the H4H farm so they could better understand how this organization operates and where the barn would be placed on the property. Building this additional classroom space enables H4H to expand their Social Garden Program, summer camps, and field trips. H4H is a non-profit community farm that is all-inclusive and provides a place where young adults of all abilities can learn, work, live, and grow. Students planned for the project by working on a scale model of the barn. The barn was staged on a specially built platform at school before it was dismantled and transported to H4H to be installed permanently. This is the third barn that Holley students have built on the H4H property in the last few years. Students will carry the skills learned in this class with them beyond high school to be used in future jobs or to make home repairs. “Students enjoy this class because they can see the realworld application of math,” said Albright. “Many students who don’t traditionally perform well in math class are performing much better in this class.” The scores from previous year’s Regents Exams continue to show that Geometry in Construction students score better than traditional Geometry class students. Regardless of how students perform on any Geometry test, they leave class feeling proud of completing a community service project that helps others.

That’s because the residual heat can make it easier to remove any leftover buildup from barbecue sauce or seasoning that stuck to the grill after you removed your food. Use a wire brush to clean the cooking grates. Wire brushes are ideal for cleaning cooking grates. Such brushes can quickly remove grease and food particles, saving grill owners the trouble of scrubbing away with traditional sponges. Once the wire brush’s work is done, you can then clean the grill with a soapy sponge. Remove food that fell into the well. Food inevitably falls into the well of a grill no matter how skilled a grillmaster might be. If left to fester in the well, such foods can pose a safety risk and promote the growth of bacteria. DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that high blood pressure is 140/90, but I thought 120/70 was optimal. Has the standard number increased? – D.M.I. ANSWER: The “pressure” in “blood pressure” is given in millimeters of mercury. It is a measurement of the pressure inside large blood vessels, first at its peak during the left ventricle squeezing (the systolic, or top number) and then at its lowest, right before the ventricle starts squeezing again (diastolic, or bottom number). Both of these numbers are important, and they provide important information about the physiology of the heart and blood vessels, as well as provide prognostic information about the risk of heart attack and stroke. In general, for healthy people, the higher the numbers, the greater the risk. The optimum blood pressure for health is about 110/70, but there are some people with lower values who are also very healthy and who have very low risk for vascular disease. Risk for heart disease starts to go up more significantly at about 140/90, but above a systolic number of 160, the risk goes up even more dramatically. The trend in blood pressure control over recent years has been toward making the blood pressure closer to the optimum, as long as treatment is well-tolerated. Having a slightly lower risk of heart attack may not be worth it to a person who has significant symptoms from blood pressure medicines. Fortunately, blood pressure is much easier to control than it used to be with better medications and with non-drug treatments, such as stress reduction, healthy diet, regular moderate exercise and, for some people, salt restriction. ***

SISTERS TOGETHER: MOVE MORE, EAT BETTER (NAPSI)—Obesity is a serious health problem in the United States. More than one in three U.S. adults have obesity and that number increases to more than half—57 percent—among U.S. black women. Research has shown that excess weight may contribute to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and certain kinds of cancer. To help address the problem of obesity, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has updated the program guide for the popular Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better national health awareness program. It encourages black women to reach and maintain a healthy weight by being more physically active and making healthier food choices. The NIDDK updated the Sisters Together program guide to include: • Recent data regarding African American obesity rates • Evidence-based strategies to promote regular physical activity and healthy food choices among black women • Highlights from Sisters Together programs developed by different groups around the country • Tips to create a budget to fund a program • Information on how to grow and manage program interest using social media • Steps to help evaluate and sustain a program • A sample in-kind donation request letter and other forms. The NIDDK encourages anyone who sees a need in his or her community to consider starting a Sisters Together program. The program guide is a free digital resource, available from the NIDDK website, that offers information on how to develop, promote, fund, evaluate and sustain a program. The guide includes sample forms, e-mails and social media posts that users can copy and modify to suit their specific needs. While the resources are aimed at black women ages 18 and older, they can be adapted to promote the “move more, eat better” message among women, youths or men of any age, race, ethnicity or community. Sisters Together began in 1994 as a pilot program conducted by the NIDDK’s Weight-control Information Network (WIN) and several partners in Boston. Based on the success of the pilot program, WIN created the program guide and other resources to support the development of local Sisters Together programs nationwide. Over the past 20 years, local groups across the country have formed partnerships with health centers, local media, recreation centers and other groups to start new Sisters Together programs. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles The Local Food Bank Needs Your Help If you’re on the other side of the fence -- able to donate to the food bank rather than visiting to use its services -- your local pantry can surely use your help. Running them is more complicated and expensive than it might seem! The food bank in my town gets most of its food from the main supplier in the state, which gets its support from philanthropists, business partners, manufacturers, producers, farmers and donors of both food and money. It then distributes food and supplies to the local food banks. The local food bank has to pay for what it receives, of course, with its own supply of cash donors and town support. In addition, there are local businesses that donate leftover breads and bakery items, farmers that bring in fresh produce and frozen meat, and folks in town who donate both cash and food. What food banks typically need: canned vegetables, fruit, soup, stews and beans; pasta, peanut butter and jelly; tuna, cereals and personal-care items like toothpaste and soap. But there are specialty items they need as well, things that are hard for the food banks to get: pet food and lactose-free milk, for example, that are very important to those who need them. (I’ve made it my goal to try to provide some of these items to the food bank each month.) If you’re in a position to help, search online for your local food bank to see what it currently needs, or make a phone call. Ask if it posts on a website or Facebook page. Your best bet, however, might be to donate money. Most food banks have more purchasing power at the store than we do; their dollar goes much further because they don’t pay retail. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My wife likes to pick up our dog’s hind legs to help him stretch; that is, she holds Cheerio by the hips so his hind legs are up off the ground while he stands on his front legs. I thought I read once that this is not good and strains the dog’s joints or back or something. Your advice would be appreciated. -- Zina J. DEAR ZINA: The “hip hold” is a safety grip to pull your dog away from a fight with another dog. It’s not a hold that should be forced or held for long periods. Stretching should be performed by owners when the dog’s joints are not weighted -- meaning the dog should not be standing or leaning on the leg being stretched. Holding Cheerio up by his hindquarters and forcing him to brace on his front legs puts him at greater risk for injury. It can cause great pain in older dogs with arthritis. If your wife would truly like to keep Cheerio’s joints healthy and improve his overall circulation and well-being, there are some great safe stretching methods, and safe massage techniques as well. Here’s a YouTube video of safe dog stretching exercises by a veterinary therapist: tinyurl.com/4ay7sfjc. Notice that at no point does the therapist stretch a joint that the dog is standing on -- they are all unweighted stretches. Dogs also stretch themselves frequently, especially when getting up after a long nap. Don’t try to assist their natural stretching -- dogs stretch in a way that’s comfortable for them. Therapeutic stretching and massage are designed to help facilitate a dog’s natural movement without placing stress on the joints. DID YOU KNOW? Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise. Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death. Bank, a clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, technicians are trained to recognize possible fungus and other infections within the nails. Depending on his profession, a man’s hands may be on display and the appearance of those hands can help close deals or present a more professional look. Manicures can help men achieve that. They’re also ideal for special occasions like weddings, when guys want to be groomed to perfection. GQ magazine advises that the occasional professional manicure can offer nice, even nails without out-of-control cuticles - no polish or gel tips necessary. First-timers may be hesitant to give manicures a try. While salon services can differ, here’s what a typical manicure will entail. • Nails are cut and filed. • Hands will be soaked in warm water and/or oil to soften skin and cuticles. • Cuticles are pushed back or trimmed. • Moisturizer may be applied, and hands are given a brief massage. • Clear polish can be used if desired. However, a thorough buffing also can create a healthy shine to the nail. Men may want to visit nail salons during off-peak times if they are shy about requesting services.
