DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

IDEAS FOR FAST AND EASY ENTERTAINING Make fast snacks. Grilled cheese is not only a delicious comfort food that can be transformed into gourmet fare depending on the cheese used, but it’s also a relatively easy appetizer to make. Bake grilled cheese between two baking sheets in the oven. The bread will turn out crispy, the cheese perfectly melted, and you can make several at the same time. Cut into bitesized pieces and serve.

CELEBRATE ENERGY STAR DAY - EVERY DAY (NAPSI)—Every Fall, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) celebrates ENERGY STAR Day to raise awareness about the benefits of saving energy today, tomorrow, and for good. The typical household spends about $2,000 a year on energy bills. American consumers interested in saving money on their utility bills can look for the blue ENERGY STAR label to identify products—in categories such as electronics, appliances, smart thermostats, and lighting-that have been independently certified to use less energy. According to the EPA, outfitting your home with these products could save you 30 percent—or about $575—on your household energy bills, while avoiding more than 5,500 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Utilities, product manufacturers, and retailers around the country join the celebration and offer special deals that help make energy efficiency accessible and affordable for everyone. In some communities, manufacturers of ENERGY STAR certified light bulbs work with electric utilities to provide low-cost LED bulbs at major discount and DIY retailers. For more information visit www.energystar.gov/SaveForGood. Since 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped American families and businesses save nearly 4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity and achieve over 3 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions.

Gardeners What small flowering shrubs will grow in my clay soil? Here are a few to consider for clay soils: Aronia, Diervilla, Dogwood, Elderberry, Flower Quince, Lilac, Potentilla, Rose of Sharon, Annabelle Hydrangea, and Weigela. Some of these have many varieties that are small in size.

Once we have the right plant in the right place planting begins with digging a hole twice as large as the root ball of the plant and to a depth that will be just deep enough to allow the current soil level in the pot or if it is bare root to the level of the root flare or collar. Place the plant in the center of the hole with root exposed. Finish with adding a 3 inch layer of mulch to the disturbed area making sure the mulch doesn’t cover the trunk(s) of the plant no higher than mentioned above. Therefore I suggested leaving the soil slightly below the root flare when backfilling. How do you tell when a lilac bush is dead? When there are no visible green or healthy buds, when the branches break rather than flexing when bent, and when no leaves begin to grow. These are all indications the plant likely is dead.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR

According to the Energy Star program, a refrigerator that is at least 15 years old may be consuming twice as much energy as a newer Energy Star-rated refrigerator. Even though purchasing new appliances will require a financial commitment, such items may help save money while benefitting the environment at the same time.

Establish a bar setup Home bars can range from rolling carts to built-in wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt. A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appliances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements.

Thanks, Livonia! A HUGE shoutout and thank you to PJ Livonia Highway Superintendent for a great cleanup job from the residents of Tuxedo Park...very much appreciated by all!

Walkers on State Routes Why you would expect people traveling at 55 mph on a busy State Route to move into the other lane so that you could walk two abreast in the road is beyond me. And to make absolutely no effort to move onto the shoulder single file in the face of oncoming traffic is unbelievable! Wake up and smell the roses before they become part of your funeral arrangement!

Medical Last week, I got very sick and called an ambulance in order to be taken a hospital. When medical people arrived and tests were done, I was informed that an ambulance would not transport me to a VA hospital as it is not considered a full working hospital. I had to have my wife run me to VA hospital...very painful. After lots of testing, I was told I had a deep vein thrombosis in my groin at the top of right leg. I would think if a person were in that much trouble, you should be rushed. My legs were three times the size of normal.

Thoughtless People Someone was cruel and thoughtless enough to steal 4 decorative rocks off a grave in [local town]. They were obviously not just rocks; they were part of the “landscaping” of the grave. They had been there for 23 years! I can’t understand how someone can be so heartless and uncaring! If you have any conscience at all, please return them! Karma!

Where did respect go? When mowing the grass, if you have neighbors and want to be respectful, the right thing to do is now three passes, blowing grass away from the neighbor's property. Come on! Please use common sense.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Don’t Disregard AARP

Starting when we reach age 50, our mailbox becomes flooded with frequent invitations to join AARP. At that age, we don’t want to hear about anything for seniors because, in our eyes, we aren’t seniors yet. We don’t even qualify for a senior discount at local stores. So maybe we don’t even look at the piles of literature and ads AARP sends. But maybe we should. There’s more to AARP than meets the eye. For a mere $16 per year, we get a whole list of benefits and information. The discounts themselves are impressive, in over a dozen categories. Want to send flowers or a gourmet fruit basket? Get a 20% discount. Traveling and need a rental car? Get a 30% discount. Save on RV insurance, prescriptions at Walmart, restaurants, hearing aids (20%), Ancestry.com (30%), Norton computer security (25%) and much more. There is a jobs board (315 jobs in my ZIP code alone), an auto-buying program to help with dealer pricing, online games, local chapters and podcasts, a government watch ... everything designed to help seniors. And then there is the AARP Bulletin monthly magazine that is sent by mail to members. If there’s one thing you don’t want to leave lying around unread, it’s this. I just picked up a recent copy and discovered three must-read articles: Identifying phone scams when you get a call, cutting the cost of online groceries and, most important of all, an article on drug interactions. Imagine my surprise to see two of my drugs listed with information about contraindications no one ever told me about. And what do they do with our membership fees? They advocate for us all over the country, especially with Social Security and Medicare. If you’re not signed up for AARP, it’s something you should consider. If in doubt, go to www.aarp.org and scroll down the page to see what’s new. If you have questions, call AARP at 888-687-2277 (Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. EST) (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or clubbased fundraisers.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Got lots of fresh herbs from your summer garden? Hang bunches upside down in a cool place for a week or so. Crumble the leaves into small jars. You’ve made your own dried herbs. * “Want super-crunchy fries at home? Soak potato pieces in very cold water for an hour (fridge is best, or add ice often); dry and fry. Drain fries well, dust LIGHTLY with flour and quickfry one more time for only a minute or so.” -- T.C. in Idaho * If you want to cool your canned drinks quickly, add water to the cooler with a lot of ice, submerge all drinks under the ice line, and wait about 20 minutes. Without the water, it takes much longer. The water extends the surface contact of the ice. * To keep your ladder from sinking into soft sand or dirt, put each leg into a can or bucket. It creates a much larger surface area, thereby stabilizing the legs. * If you run out of bleach, add 4 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to a small load of white laundry. * Be certain to use only distilled water in your iron. The water from the tap can leave mineral stains on clothing, and will kill your iron if you do it all the time. -- R.E. in Louisiana

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Snooping Out a Mystery Pooper DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, a new neighbor with a big dog moved into one of the apartments next door. Since then, every morning there’s a fresh deposit of dog poo on my front lawn. And not on the edge -- right in the middle of the lawn. Because it happens before sunrise each day, I suspect the new neighbor is letting their dog out, unleashed and unsupervised, to do its business wherever it pleases. How should I deal with this problem? I don’t have clear proof that it’s the new neighbor, but it sure smells like it. -- Disgusted in Dallas Dear Disgusted: I’m with you. Owners need to be responsible for their pets, and they need to be good neighbors by keeping their dogs on a leash and picking up after them. There are a couple of ways to discover the culprit. The low-cost way is to wake up well before dawn and watch your front lawn. Snap a photo of the dog when it comes onto your property, but don’t try to shoo it away -- you’re gathering evidence. The high-cost way is to install a security camera with a motion sensor. Aim it so that it has a good view of your property but not other yards (it’s a privacy issue). Set it to record when the motion sensor is triggered. With or without proof, contact the property manager of the apartment building. Calmly explain the situation and your suspicions, and ask them to remind residents in writing about leash laws. Most property managers have a vested interest in keeping the neighbors happy and will cooperate to solve the problem. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. Keeping our Promise: More than a Mission Part I BY AMANDA DUDEK

Welcoming a young refugee to safety! (l-r: Laurel Prothero, Ellen Smith & Mohammad Ullah)

W

hen the United States military evacuated from Afghanistan in August 2021, the plight of those left behind was thrown into the spotlight; however, passionate, selfless men and women had been working throughout the war to secure the safety of the interpreters and support personnel who risked their lives working with the United States. Keeping Our Promise, Inc. (KOP), originally the initial chapter of No One Left Behind (NOLB), is one such program, and the impact of last year’s evacuation cannot be overstated. KOP is the most comprehensive resettlement program for Afghan, Iraqi and Kurdish interpreters and support personnel in the United States today. This Rochester-based program assists with initial visa applications under the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) Program. In 2021 74 Afghan families totaling 219 individuals were resettled in the greater Rochester, NY area. The majority – 195 individuals – arrived since July 4, 2021, a record for the program, straining its volunteer capacity. Pashtuns, Uzbeks, Tajiks, Hazara, Turkmen and Nuristanis from Afghanistan, Sunni and Shia Iraqis, as well as Kurdish allies, who served the U.S. have received help from KOP to come to Rochester under the SIV program for their faithful and honorable service to the United States in a warzone. KOP provides such assistance as: •

Finding & furnishing apartments for newly arrived families

Offering Caring Circles for each family to navigate the necessities of their new lives in Rochester

Exploring skilled-trades training & helping find employment

Offering modest car grants so SIVs can get to work, and much more.

“Keeping Our Promise started in my head in 2013 when I just signed a petition to get a military captain’s interpreter a visa into the U.S. after he was targeted by the Taliban,” said KOP Executive Director Ellen Smith. Having assisted over 600 SIV refugees and their families, Ellen was a credentialed journalist for 29 years, won 37 top journalism awards, and was recently honored with the 2019 Hannah G. Solomon Humanitarian Award, as well.

Starting to hear the stories, and in some cases to see the physical wounds from battle, seeing what it meant for these soldiers to get their interpreters to safety has made me so passionate about this. These people believe in American ideals.” - Ellen Smith

“It took off from there. People were bringing furniture to my house, and I used to house families at our farm,” said the Mendon resident. “It is a very stressful time for these families, especially when you have kids involved; they usually cry for the first two weeks. They are tired, off time by about 9 hours. Also, all of these families are used to living in extended family units, so it is the first time they are away from their aunts, cousins, grandparents…it is a learning experience for everyone all the time.” When No One Left Behind was discontinued in 2018, KOP was born, becoming an independent 501(c)3. “We still work with NOLB,” said Ellen. “In fact, they gave us the grant money to hire Laurel because I was so overwhelmed with families last year. We have already helped 43 families from January to June of this year.” Assistant Executive Director Laurel Prothero couldn’t have been more pleased. “A friend of mine had worked with KOP,” she said when explaining how she first heard of the organization. “He had worked with an organization called Skateistan, teaching youth in Afghanistan how to skateboard. I started in September 2021 as a volunteer, was a part of the caring circles, and adopted a few families. I was pretty much volunteering full-time when they asked me to work for them. It evolved from there.” Almost all of the Skateistan program families were able to be resettled into one community. The need of these KOP families could not be clearer. “We know that if these people don’t get out of Afghanistan, they could be beheaded or tortured by the Taliban or Isil (Islamic State),” explained Ellen. “Starting to hear the stories, and in some cases to see the physical wounds from battle, seeing what it meant for these soldiers to get their interpreters to safety has made me so passionate about this. These people believed in American ideals.” “These men and women have risked so much because of their hope for their country,” said Laurel. “They didn’t want to see an authoritarian system. Many of them want more rights for women. They risked a lot to work with Americans, to work beside us. They have lost so much, and it is really an honor to be able to be there to welcome them, to give them a safe place, a respite, a community…a chance to make it here.” Want to learn more about Keeping Our Promise? Come back next week for harrowing refugee experiences, resettlement, what’s next for KOP, and how you can help! Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great story online at www. gvpennysaver.com:

The KOP ball really started rolling when a military captain in Syracuse , Michael Chapel, reached out to Ellen to help his interpreter. “Michael got him an apartment, and we worked together to furnish it,” said Ellen. “I helped this second interpreter, and I thought I was done. Then, when I was on vacation in 2015, I received a call about another interpreter in a bad situation in Rochester. The interpreter asked if I could help his neighbor as well.” That neighbor turned out to be Javayd Samadie, a current member of the KOP Board, responsible for helping to formulate the best practices for taking care of newly arrived SIV refugee families, helping with insurance for our Wheels for

Work program, offering job search advice, and more. Mr. Samadie served the U.S. mission in Afghanistan for six years, has a degree in Business Administration, a Master’s Degree in Governance and Public Policy, and has done work for the United Nations.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 80-year-old female in good

health except for a diagnosis of osteopenia. My primary care doctor has prescribed medication for my osteopenia. I have periodontal disease and have been advised by my periodontal specialist not to take medication for osteopenia due to deterioration of the jawbone. I think I am in a loselose situation. I spoke to my internal medicine doctor, and he said he was concerned about a hip fracture if I don’t take the osteopenia medication. I don’t want to take a chance on the jaw deteriorating. Please give me your opinion on the best course of action. -- G.M. ANSWER: Osteopenia, also called low bone density, is a risk factor for osteoporosis. The risk of developing a fracture depends on a person’s age and sex, height and weight, results of their bone density test and presence of certain other medical risk factors, including previous fracture, use of glucocorticoid drugs like prednisone, smoking and rheumatoid arthritis. Fracture risk is commonly estimated by the FRAX tool (www.sheffield.ac.uk/FRAX/). If the estimated hip fracture risk is 3%, or the combined risk of any fracture is 20%, then medication treatment is usually recommended. Getting your FRAX result is a critical number to have to help make an informed decision. You will need the exact results of your bone density. If your risk is not so high that medication is recommended, there are many things you can do to help your bone density. These include adequate dietary calcium, supplemental vitamin D, regular exercise -- especially weight-bearing and strengthening exercises -- and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol. A home evaluation to reduce fall risk may be of benefit. If your fracture risk is already higher than the above threshold, medication would normally be prescribed in addition to lifestyle treatments. Antiresorptive treatments, such as alendronate (Fosamax) or other bisphosphonate drugs, do increase the risk for jawbone damage, and given what your periodontist has recommended, I would avoid not only these drugs but also denosumab (Prolia), which works similarly by decreasing bone resorption. Although I am not an expert, I would consider treatment with a medicine like teriparatide, which has been used as a treatment for people with jaw osteonecrosis. This medicine works by stimulating bone growth and has a good safety record. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DON’T LET SUNBURN DERAIL SUMMER FUN Many people find it impossible to think about summer without conjuring visions of spending endless hours outdoors from morning until evening, whether beachside, on the open water or even floating in a backyard pool. Although a certain measure of sun exposure is required for some natural functions of the body, it’s well documented that too much time in the sun can be hazardous to one’s health. That’s why summer frolickers need to exercise considerable caution each time they step outside. Taking sunburn for granted can be a big mistake. Many people wouldn’t risk burns from a hot stove or open fire, but they won’t think twice about being unprotected under the very hot rays of the sun. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than one-third of adults and nearly 70 percent of children admit to suffering from sunburn within the past year. Depending on the intensity of the sun and the amount of time spent outside, sunburn can be a first- or second-degree burn. In first-degree burns, damage affects the topmost layer of skin. However, sunburn can even affect deeper layers and cause blistering in addition to redness and pain. Sunburn also can cause some irreparable damage that goes unseen. According to WebMD, ultraviolet light from the sun can alter DNA, prematurely aging skin or even contributing to skin cancers. It can take years before symptoms become noticeable. Therefore, it is best for people of all ages to exercise caution when spending time in the sun. Sunburn is one of the most easily prevented summertime ailments. It’s also important to note that sunburns are not just limited to the hot weather or when it is sunny outside. Ultraviolet damage can occur at any time of the year, and also from artificial UV sources, such as tanning beds. Preventing sunburn is simple.

EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas. The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce. As the economy continues to improve, job prospects follow suit. According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects. Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, EMPLOYMENT

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

BE COOL AND SAVE MONEY (NAPSI) — Many Americans may be surprised to learn that almost half their utility bill goes toward heating and cooling their home. Fortunately, the U.S. EPA’s ENERGY STAR Program offers resources to help you beat the heat—all while saving a, saving money and protecting the climate. Here’s how: Maintain or Upgrade Your HVAC System Check your system’s air filters. A dirty air filter will make the system work harder to keep you cool, wasting energy. Filters should be inspected once a month during heavy use. If your heating and cooling equipment is more than 10 years old or it needs frequent repairs, it may be time to consider a replacement. The ENERGY STAR Heating and Cooling Guide helps you navigate an HVAC equipment upgrade that will keep you comfortable and help you save money, year round. Visit www.energystar.gov/HVACguide. Get a Smart Thermostat A WiFi-enabled smart thermostat automatically adjusts your home’s temperature settings for optimal performance. ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats are independently certified, based on actual field data, to deliver energy savings. Need a New Room AC? On average, ENERGY STAR certified room air conditioners use 10 percent less energy and cost less than $70 per year to run. Learn More: You can find other savings tips at www.energystar.gov/cooling.
