Help plants survive sizzling summer heat Lay down mulch. Mulch helps insulate and protect soil during summer, when soil can quickly dry out. When applied correctly (ideally before summer temperatures get too hot), mulch helps the soil conserve moisture and prevents weed growth. Weeds can rob soil of the water it needs to promote strong root systems, which can help plants get the nutrients they need to withstand summer heat. Mulched soils also do not experience the fluctuations in temperature that non-mulched soils can experience during summer heat waves, helping plants to grow evenly.

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Gardening is widely considered as relaxing a hobby as it is rewarding. Although gardening when temperatures are mild, such as in spring and fall, can be relaxing, gardening can be much more physically taxing and even dangerous when temperatures rise during the dog days of summer. Gardens need tending even when temperatures outside are especially hot, so gardeners must take steps to protect their health when working in their gardens during the summer.

Dansville’s Beloved Star Theatre Turns 100 BY AMANDA DUDEK
F
ew places have captured our imaginations like the theatre with its bright lights, entertaining stories, and tasty treats. They create memories that last a lifetime and experiences that span generations. For businesses like Star Theatre in Dansville, this is especially true. Built in 1921, Star Theatre was always intended to be a theatre. Its original plaster designs, brass balcony rails and the spectacular crystal chandelier–gifted to it in 1921 by The Dansville Lutheran Church–are still there along with the painted screen and early ice block air conditioning unit. Designed for sound with its single screen, movie goers still enjoy a movie experience without distraction from other films. While it was updated to today’s surround sound, modern air conditioning, and Dolby Digital Projection System, Star Theatre has never lost its historic charm and beauty, thanks in large part to a local family’s vision. Charles Schmidt bought the theatre in 1994, after the building had been vacant for nearly 9 years. He and his whole family worked hard to save and restore the structure, giving his community back the theatre it loved. Charles’ daughter Lois reflected, “I have been a part of Star Theatre since I was 28! Now a grandma at 55, what I enjoy most is the feeling of ‘coming home’ when you walk in the Star Theatre doors. So much more than movies on the screen, the theatre has been the home of many celebrations and firsts from first movie to first date.” Many share Lois’ sentiments, including her brother, the late and much-loved Edgar Schmidt, who ran Star Theatre until his passing in October 2019. Edgar loved Star Theatre and the community, supporting as many local businesses as he could. Said Jennifer Howe, “Edgar was very involved and supportive of the local communities in the area as is the whole Schmidt family. As a Dansville Rotary Club member and former president, he took pride in Main Street, helping to stain front stoops, tending flower beds, keeping sidewalks tidy, and even just popping his head in to say hello! He was more than happy to support worthy fundraisers, even if the funds came from his own pocket.” Today, Lois and her husband, David Furioso, continue to bring a fun and affordable movie-going experience to Dansville

area communities, “a family-friendly night out that doesn’t break the bank!” While the venue and atmosphere are certainly the main attraction, the theatre snack shop has to be a close second. Added by the Schmidt Family, the theatre’s candy case offers over 50 kinds of candy and treats priced so that even the smallest child or the smallest budget can enjoy a snack with their movie. The star attraction? Popcorn! “We like to say it’s Edgar’s secret recipe and the best popcorn this side of the Mississippi. People even come in during a movie just to get popcorn to take home!” Howe shared. After facing the challenging restrictions of the pandemic, Star Theatre is pleased to be open once again, showing first-run movies on weekends. It hopes to resume its regular 7-days-a-week schedule soon. Its patrons are thankful to see it reopen its doors. A huge part of Dansville history, losing the 100-year-old landmark would be more than a loss of a favorite local tradition, it would close the book on so many memories. “We hear stories of movie dates, of sitting in the balcony, of when the attendant would shine a flashlight at them for being too chatty,” said Howe. “We like to think Star Theatre plays a special part in people’s lives.” Lois agrees as she concludes, “The wonder and joy of watching movies, as well as hosting other events and celebrations, is why Star Theatre is a little bit of ‘home’ for everyone in our community and will continue to be so for many years to come.” 100 years ago, venues like Star Theatre brought local entertainment to our communities. It’s a privilege to bring our communities back to local entertainment. For more information and show times, visit the Star Theatre website at www.startheatredansville.com or call (585) 335-6950. SIMPLE WAYS TO BE MORE CHARITABLE Being charitable is rewarding, not only to those on the receiving end of others’ good deeds but also for those doing the giving.

Cat Owner Defends Free-Range Felines
--DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As an owner of six indoor cats, I would like to respond to your recent article (“Cats shouldn’t get free pass to poop”). In the past two years we have had to pay over $300 for damage done by chipmunks to our car. We cannot have a raised garden here due to rabbits, groundhogs, deer and chipmunks. When my cats used to be outdoors, I saw very few birds killed by them. Generally, it was mice and moles. My cats would kill snakes and scare off the squirrels. I brought my cats indoors because of coyotes in the area. Also, one of my cats was attacked by a neighbor and had to be put to sleep. If there were no cats, you would be totally overrun by mice and rats. How would you like that? I suggest that you print this letter, that you do not shorten it, that you apologize for what you said about cats and that you think twice before you put something like this in writing again. Thank you. -- Debra in West Virginia DEAR DEBRA: I will apologize ... for shortening your letter, as we have limited space. You raise many good points based on your personal experience. Cats do keep many rodents at bay, because they are incredibly good hunters. But they are at grave risk being outdoors, from coyotes, from feral cats carrying diseases and from humans who do evil, foul things. The article that offended you raised many good points about the damage that outdoor cats can do to neighbors’ property, and the danger they pose to small creatures. I’m glad you’re keeping your cats safe indoors. Doesn’t your experience prove the point that cats are safer inside? Send your comments, questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. Research conducted by the National Institutes of Health found participants who chose to donate a portion of money they were provided activated pleasure centers in the brain. Doing something positive can be uplifting, and being charitable helps others in need. Quite often people who engage in charitable works find inspiration through their efforts. That’s because working with a nonprofit group can create opportunities to meet new people, socialize and be surrounded with like-minded individuals. It also may help adults serve as role models to youngsters. Children who see their parents or other adults being charitable may be more likely to be philanthropic when they grow up. Every little bit counts when being charitable. Philanthropy doesn’t mean donating thousands of dollars or lots of hours volunteering. The following are some relatively easy ways to incorporate charity into one’s life. • Collect change: Place a coin jar near where you put your keys or wallet when entering the house. Empty loose change into the jar and watch it fill up. Use the collected funds to donate to a charitable group. • Round up: When the grocery store checkout clerk asks if you want to round up your purchase to the nearest dollar for charity, opt in.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Dill planted near tomatoes will draw caterpillars away from the fruits. And it’s delicious. * Potato salad will have more flavor if you whisk together all the dressing ingredients and add it to the potatoes when they are warm. The potatoes will absorb the ingredients better, and the flavor will develop even more during refrigeration.
• Become a leader: Volunteer your time as a scout troop leader, coach a sports team or offer free tutoring for students. You’ll be making an immediate difference in the lives of young people. • Charitable consumption: Buy from companies that are involved with cause-related products. Many products are tied to charitable efforts, with a portion of money going directly to nonprofits. • Throw a party: Host a party with a philanthropic theme. Guests can arrive and make a donation or bring a gift that will go to a charitable cause. • Use your hobby: Participate in charity fundraisers that incorporate some of your favorite hobbies. For those who knit or craft, donate or sell your creations for the good of those in need. Being charitable is easier than one might think, and even the smallest efforts can produce big results.
* “I love to grill, and when it’s nice out, we grill every weekend. I always put on extra and use the leftovers through the week. Chicken in salad, a nice flank steak for fajitas, etc. And it means less cooking for me!” -- Y.L. in Maryland * Here’s a great recipe for an icy treat: Freeze orange juice or apple juice in ice trays. Throw a handful in the blender for a fruit slush that can’t be beat on a hot day.

WORDS MADE OF CELLS
* “A lot of smoke was coming off our grill, and our patio doors were wide open. Long story short: It swamped the living room with smoke. The smell was a little overwhelming. After we closed the door, my neighbor doused a kitchen towel with white vinegar, wrung it out and waved it around the room. It cleared out the smoke smell right away, and the vinegar smell went away just as quickly. What a miracle!” -- F.F. in South Carolina * Got poison ivy? The maddening itch might find relief from coffee grounds or a cooled cuppa. It contains anti-inflammatories.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself.

Future of Social Security I feel very sorry for the generation of young people who think that they won’t have to worry about a shortage of nursing homes, assisted living facilities and sky-high insurance premiums. Your grandchildren and greatgrandchildren are all going to have to pay through the nose. Good luck to you! I will be fortunate enough to be dead and gone hopefully before this day comes. I have been working and paying into this honey pot since age 14. Get off your butts and get a job.
Thank you, Pat Privatera! In LeRoy, we are blessed to have a multi-faceted health facility. Available is a certified Physical Therapy Program with great equipment and space for this program; something for everyone. It is available for those needing medical Physical Therapy, people, especially handicap individuals who benefit from water exercises, people who want group exercise, like Medicare Silver Sneakers, water aerobics, access to personal trainers, etc. Children can have birthday parties with use of the gym and pool and group activities thought up by community groups are welcomed. The staff, from the Certified Physical Therapist, to office and other staff are pleasant, helpful, and accommodating. This all came about because of a wonderful Physical Therapist, Pat Privatera. I believe that my participating in water exercises in the heated pool over the last 12 to 15 years has kept me from becoming bedridden.
To the 85-year-old woman To the 85-year-old woman complaining that her memory is telling her in the last month the administration borrowed from Social Security. Then, she said it was stolen again. So, she’s saying it was stolen twice since January. Here’s some information for you. [Some] say the Social Security program has to borrow money to stay afloat, making it a key part of the national debt crisis. [Others] say Social Security is fully funded with a huge surplus. (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars.
DID YOU KNOW?
“The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern.

Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.
One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

Celebrating 20 Years Serving Our Community! Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the difference between chronic pain and acute pain? How can I best describe my chronic pain when it is variable in intensity but negatively impacts so much of my life and my activities? Are there things my doctor should consider or suggest in my treatment or in communicating with me? -- P.P.C. ANSWER: Acute pain is usually due to an injury or infection, and we expect healing to occur relatively quickly. Chronic pain is expected to go on for at least six months. In some people, acute pain is not treated adequately at the time of injury, and the brain and body learn to be in pain chronically. The reason for pain is perfectly obvious in some cases, but in others, it is not possible to identify the exact cause of pain. Most times, pain is due to damaged nerves (neuropathic pain); injury or degeneration in the musculoskeletal system (osteoarthritis and many kinds of back pain); inflammatory pain (due to infection or inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis); and compressive pain (such as kidney stones or cancer). Chronic pain affects many parts of your life, as you correctly note, and an experienced doctor will ask about the effect of pain on your social life, mood (depression is very common), relationships, sleep, exercise and occupation. People with more severe problems will have limitations in their activities of daily living. Many people with chronic pain have almost given up communicating the scope of the problems they have, as they don’t like “complaining” all the time, or they feel their loved ones are tired of hearing about it. However, getting a thorough history of the effect of all these dimensions of pain is important for your doctor. Questionnaires like the Brief Pain Inventory address more areas of function than a typical 1-10 pain scale, and may be useful to monitor response to treatment. Experts in pain management are more likely to have the knowledge and experience to communicate about pain effectively, and truly effective treatment for chronic pain requires understanding it. There can be pain without suffering. Suffering is the emotional component brought on by fear: “How bad am I going to hurt today? Will I ever be able to work again? All of my relationships are suffering.” Learning to live a function-centered life is key in the treatment of chronic pain. It isn’t easy and requires a multidisciplinary approach. The time of prescribing pain medications, especially opiates, without a comprehensive plan for long-term pain management, should be over. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Are You a Victim of Elder Abuse? Do you suspect, or know, that somebody has been stealing from you? Maybe it’s items from your home? Or maybe it’s your money? Or perhaps you’re being pressured by someone to keep giving them cash. If so, you are not alone. It’s called elder abuse. The biggest problem is that these thefts are often not reported, typically because the one doing the abusing is a family member. Or maybe it’s after the fact, and we’re not certain. Or maybe we don’t know where we should report it. Finances and theft aren’t the only forms of elder abuse. Others include emotional, sexual and physical abuse, neglect and exploitation. Emotional abuse, for example, can include threats, belittling and verbal attacks -- anything that causes mental distress and pain. Exploitation can be fraud, undue influence over your cash or property and being pressured to sign papers you don’t understand. Do you see yourself in any of those categories? The National Center on Elder Abuse website (ncea.acl.gov) is a good place to start. Notice the red banner at the bottom of the page with “Safe Exit” in white letters. If you’re looking at the site and fear that someone will come up behind you and read what you’re looking at, quickly click that red banner and it will take you to an innocent-looking webpage. If you are being abused in some way, help is available. In all states, there are professionals who are required to report suspicions of maltreatment. It’s called mandatory reporting, and in some states the list of professions is very long and varied: chiropractor, occupational therapist, member of the clergy, attorney, animal control officer, bank employee and many others. To get a referral for help, call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-6771116. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Recognize your strengths. Today’s professionals are less likely than their predecessors to stick with one company or line of work for their entire working lives. But just because you change jobs or career paths does not mean your past experience is useless. Successful women know what they do best, whether it’s public speaking, writing or making sales pitches. Apply those strengths when looking for a new job or career.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, women in the United States are entitled to 12 weeks maternity leave. Women can choose to use a portion of that maternity leave even before their children are born if physical limitations are making it challenging for them to continue working. Women should put their health and the safety of their unborn children ahead of their responsibilities at work. In addition, women should not hesitate to speak with their employers about their comfort levels while pregnant. If an issue arises, speak with your boss, who deserves the benefit of the doubt. In some instances, breastfeeding also is protected by law at job sites or at the office. It is best for women to familiarize themselves with breastfeeding policies ahead of time so they can make the proper accommodations. Pregnant women should discuss with their doctors which work activities are permissable and which should be avoided at particular times in the pregnancy. Every effort should be made to avoid toxic substances, and pregnant women should not lift heavy items or engage in any potentially risky physical activity. For more information about workplace rights, visit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at www.eeoc.gov.
