How to Get a Pet Cleanup Station in Your Neighborhood

Body & Mind _____________________8

Corn Muffin! She is one of my Grammie’s favorite chickens. My favorite too! She’s so sweet!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The sidewalks of my small town are often littered with dog waste. There is a town ordinance requiring owners to pick up after their dogs, but it’s clearly not being enforced. I read that installing pet waste stations throughout the community can greatly reduce this problem. How do I convince the town to do this? -- Gloria G. in Ohio

Classifieds ____________________26 Employment ____________________23 Garage Sales ____________________19

Home Services ____________________14

DEAR GLORIA: Dog waste stations, which provide small plastic or compostable waste pickup bags and a covered can to dispose of poo, can not only improve the sidewalks in your town, it can improve water quality in local streams and lakes. Runoff from piles of dog poop add nitrogen and phosphorus to nearby water systems, depleting oxygen and endangering aquatic life.

Hometown Events ____________________20

You can help fix this by calling attention to the problem and getting community support for pet pickup stations.

Give & Take ____________________17

1. Contact your local municipality. Find out how to put forward a pet waste proposal. Sometimes one is on the table already; learn how you can join an ongoing effort to get approval for pet waste stations. 2. Install a pet pickup bag dispenser. If local ordinances allow it, set up a waste bag dispenser at the edge of your yard or driveway. 3. Enlist others in the cause. The best allies in this initiative are other responsible dog owners who you meet walking their dogs. Start a conversation, then a Facebook group, then an in-person meeting. The more stakeholders in the initiative, the faster it can happen. 4. Be prepared for pushback. You’ll have to answer questions like: How will the town pay for these stations? Who will maintain them? Are there other property or HOA issues to consider?

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

It may take time, but with a little research and some positive conversations with neighbors, your town’s dog poo problem could soon be a thing of the past. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK Day camp: Day camps provide much of the structure of school without all the homework or time spent indoors. Many parks and recreation departments run summer day camps for kids. Camps can be generalized or specialized. For example, some may offer an array of activities, including sports and nature walks, in a given day, while others may focus on a single activity, like musical lessons or science-based programs. Camps run by local parks and rec departments do not typically last all summer long, which parents should keep in mind when enrolling youngsters.

Keeping Our Promise: More than a Mission Part II BY AMANDA DUDEK

K

eeping Our Promise (KOP), the most comprehensive resettlement program for Afghan, Iraqi and Kurdish interpreters and support personnel in the United States today, is a Rochester-based program which assists with initial visa applications under the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) Program. KOP Executive Director Ellen Smith and KOP Assistant Executive Director Laurel Prothero continue the struggle to not only bring these individuals and families to safety, but also to help them resettle with a solid foundation on which to successfully rebuild their lives. After all the families have endured, it cannot be easy. The work they did, even being associated with the United States or the former Afghan government, put them in danger. When American troops were withdrawn, the more progressive government fell. “The pace at which everything happened was very quick,” said Laurel. “The families didn’t have time to adjust or make other arrangements.” Ellen agreed. “All the sudden, the president left,” she explained. “Those associated with his government knew they had to try to get out.” Muzafar* worked with the Afghan Supreme Court, creating a docket system and working for women’s and children’s legal rights in Afghanistan. For this, of course, he would be targeted by the Taliban. His wife was educated, as well. She went to dental school in Turkey and came back as a dentist. If they had stayed, he probably would have lost his life, both because of his job with the Afghan government and because he was fighting the very things the Taliban supported. KOP helped bring Muzafar and his wife to safety in the United States. KOP first connected with Vares* in 2019. On the day Kabul fell, Vares was still at work. “He messaged me and said, ‘I am being left behind,’” said Ellen. “I told him, ‘I need all of your American contacts immediately.’ I called this retired army colonel, and I said, ‘You don’t know me, and this might sound crazy, but I need a letter of recommendation to get this man out of the country.’” Vares had worked with the United States, then for Mercy Corps before going to work for the Afghan government. He had 17 ex-military people supporting him, and it was clear how much his service meant to them. Thanks to KOP, Vares and his family have been welcomed to safety. Dalir* was a TV anchor. When KOP brought him safely to the United States, his goal was to continue to work in media. He took a job indirectly related to media at first and continued to work towards his dream. “He was very focused; one of the most persistent people I’ve met in a lot of ways, and he just really made it happen,” said Laurel. Now, Dalir is working for a local TV station. “His coworkers seem to love him, and he is very passionate about his work,” she continued. “It is amazing to see someone’s dream come true, to see how the supports we provide set them up to achieve.” Unfortunately, there are still thousands of individuals and families waiting to leave Afghanistan. Tareq* worked for an army captain who was from south of Rochester. Tareq was a journalist and was present during an airport bombing. The army captain called Ellen. “I had to get clothing descriptions for everyone in his family because I had to describe everything to identify them,” she recalled. “I even had them wave a brightly colored piece of

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

clothing.” Unfortunately, Tareq’s passport was expired, and his father and youngest child did not have a passport. Now, finally, Tareq’s family all have their passports so they can travel to Qatar. They are still waiting in Afghanistan. “Our Afghan families are stuck,” said Ellen. One Afghan gentleman told KOP, “It is really bad, worse than you can imagine. My family is fine, but the Taliban is now ordering young women to marry their fighters.” “I found the news article,” confirmed Ellen. “What do you say to that?” KOP plans to continue its efforts. “We rely on private donors to do what we are doing,” said Ellen. “The goal is to give these people a foundation through caring circles, a phone, a computer, eventually Wheels to Work. The issues are complicated. We can’t turn back time, but we can help these families.” “Our next steps will continue to be helping these people to come to this resettlement project in Rochester, creating continued support through community and policy, and to continue to bring the Afghans into our volunteering process,” added Laurel.

“They lost their families, their country, and risked their lives.”

There are many ways to support KOP, from helping with donation pickups to fixing furniture to participating in Caring Circles to donating funds or necessary home furnishings. KOP also encourages readers to call their Congress members, asking them to support the Afghan Adjustment Act which would allow certain Afghan evacuees to apply for permanent status after one year of being paroled into the U.S. Supporting these evacuees is the least we can do. “They are good people,” said Ellen. “They are coming in with skill sets and ready to work. They are running the clock all the way around, trying to rebuild their lives and take care of their families.” “They lost their families, their country, and risked their lives,” said Laurel, noting that U. S. military members are KOP’s biggest allies. “These people kept the United States safe, informed, and engaged. There is nothing more patriotic than helping them.” *Names have been changed for privacy.

Signs Wouldn’t it be nice/safe/perhaps lifesaving, if all 2-way intersections (like the one pictured) had this signage below the stop sign? “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” would be so helpful for so many 2-way intersections everywhere, and sadly, lives have been lost because a driver unfortunately deemed it a 4-way stop, and proceeds into oncoming traffic. May not be the complete answer, but a very valid attempt at one. Let’s see more of these signs!

Dangerous Driver To the older lady driving the blue Mercedes SUV on 6/28. Turning left at the intersection between [local business] and [local business], you did not have the right of way! You completely cut me off. I had to come to a complete stop to avoid hitting you. But trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, it looked like you didn't even see me (scary). You then proceeded to not even go the speed limit. I was then starting to get more irritated with you, so I turned on my headlights, hoping then you would see me. You then turned in to [local business]. The icing on the cake: you attempted to flip me off, but your arthritic hand looked more like an eagle's claws. So, I blew my horn as to draw attention to you with the other patrons, not that you'd actually tell them the truth. My hope is that someone in your family will see this and maybe re-evaluate your driving ability. I was able to stop in time, saving my son and myself. The next person may not be able to. Stop being so selfish and arrogant.

Interesting As a grocery store employee, I find it ironic that customers will come into the store and be outright abusive over rising prices, but will not bat an eye over spending money on enough fireworks to last three consecutive nights. Move your car! Be a good neighbor and stop parking directly across the street from the end of my driveway so that I don’t have to struggle to get out. We already live on a narrow street. Have some consideration.

Keeping vehicles looking pristine requires care and diligent cleaning. So many day-to-day activities and environmental materials have the potential to damage the finish on cars and trucks. While winter weather and chemicals used to keep roadways passable are often blamed for affecting the appearance of cars and trucks, winter is not the only time of year when substances can cause damage to vehicles. Spring and summer are prime seasons for sap, birds and insects. These times of year tend to see an uptick in road work as well, and such projects can contribute to damage caused by loose asphalt, gravel and tar. Addressing problems resulting from tree sap, insect and bird droppings and tar may not be something to look forward to, but it is necessary to keep cars looking pristine.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

EKG Test Result May Be a Sign of Heart Block

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Lakeville

---

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently had an EKG that showed first degree heart block and “inferior infarct, age undetermined.” What does that mean? What should I do to make sure it doesn’t get worse? I will be seeing a cardiologist in a few months to get an exercise stress echo. What is that? -- C.P. ANSWER: The EKG uses the electrical activity in the heart to give important information about the structure and function of the heart. Although it is a very useful test, it isn’t perfect. “First degree heart block” just means that the electrical impulse in the heart is a little slow. By itself, it is not concerning, but it does suggest there is a risk of other heart problems, such as second or third degree heart block. These sometimes do need treatment (a pacemaker). It’s something to keep an eye on, but it’s possible to have first degree heart block for decades without progression. An “infarct” is a heart attack. The EKG has characteristic findings of heart attack, which can be localized to a particular part of the heart. In your case, that is the bottom part of the heart, which is supplied by the right coronary artery. This type of heart attack is often complicated by first degree heart block, which may explain why you have that result. A stress test looks for damage to the heart, and especially looks to see if part of the heart is at risk for another heart attack. With a stress echocardiogram, the heart is “stressed” by exercise or by medication to speed it up, and the movement of the heart is carefully examined by sound waves. This test can help determine whether you really did have a heart attack and whether you need treatment to help prevent another one. Many people who have had a heart attack never knew it. Either they had no symptoms, or they thought it was something else, such as stomach upset (heart attacks in the inferior part of the heart often feel like stomach problems). But if you have had a heart attack, then certain medicines, such as aspirin, beta blockers and statin drugs, are very helpful in preventing another. If the stress echo is worrisome, the cardiologist may recommend an angiogram, which is the best test we have at identifying parts of the heart at risk for heart attack. It also allows the doctors sometimes to open up blockages in the arteries. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

Started many years ago to help low-income individuals with their phone costs, it’s been expanded to include internet at home, offering a $9.25 monthly discount. That $9.25 savings doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re like me, nowadays, you’re converting every dollar saved into food. That $9.25, for example, could turn into a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk, or even a pound of ground beef, a package of hamburgers buns and most of a can of beans. You’ll need to qualify for Lifeline. One way you do that is if you (or anyone in your household) receive benefits from Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, veterans pensions, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid and others, or through having verifiable low income. (You’ll need paperwork to prove it.) You can sign up in a number of ways, such as by mail or online at nv.fcc.gov/ lifeline. Scroll through the information on that page. Call 800-234-9473 for more information or to ask that an application be sent to you by mail. But there’s more. In addition, if you qualify for Lifeline, you likely also qualify for an even bigger assistance: the Affordable Connectivity Program. ACP is new and can give you a $30 monthly discount on your internet. Once you’re in the Lifeline program, call your internet provider and enroll in ACP with them. There’s no need to fill out another application. There are hundreds of internet providers that are part of the program, including some big names like Xfinity, AT&T and Spectrum. In some cases, that $30 gets you internet without you having to pay anything additional. In other words, free internet. Get the details from your internet provider. For a list of providers by state, go to www.fcc.gov/affordable-connectivity-program-providers. Get more information on the Affordable Connectivity Program at www.fcc.gov/acp or call 877-384-2575. HOW TO KEEP OUTDOOR LIVING AREAS SAFE Consider fencing. Fencing can make an outdoor living space more private and safe. Local laws may mandate that pools be enclosed with fencing, but even living spaces without pools can be made safer with the installation of a fence. Firepits are wildly popular, as more than 35 percent of homeowners who responded to the ICFA survey acknowledged their intention to purchase new firepits in 2021. Adding fencing around areas with firepits establishes boundaries, which is a must for homeowners with small children. Fencing also makes it harder for local wildlife to gain access to a property, which can decrease residents’ risk for tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease.

* “I finally got a new car, and there’s no cassette player in it. I have a pretty large library of music on tapes, so I was a little bummed. My wife got me a little device that looks like an old Walkman, and it hooks up to the computer. I can convert my cassettes to digital songs, which I can burn onto CDs. It would cost hundreds of dollars to re-buy all that music, and there are some tapes that I couldn’t replace even if I had the money, so this is great.” -- C.C. in Ohio * “I love old books, and there are always a few I am looking for that are out of print. It seems like when I get inside a used-book store, I forget everything. So I made a card that I keep in my wallet and on it I list all the authors or titles I am after. This way, I have it handy all the time.” -- C.D. in Florida * Apricots are a relative of the peach, and they can be ripened just like a peach can -- in a paper bag on the counter. They should be refrigerated when ripe. * “I went to a tag sale and purchased a set of really cute flowerpots for barely anything. I like them so much that I am using them inside my house. They are holding utensils in the kitchen, and remotes and other odds and ends in the living room. They are great!” -- S.I. in Texas * Laundry baskets can be your best friends when decluttering the house. Go from room to room collecting the clutter in a laundry basket, then bring it to a central location to sort and redistribute items that belong in each room.

The word “Hammock” originated from a Taino culture Arwakan word meaning “fishnet”. The name is also derived from the Hamack tree because hammocks used to be woven from their bark.

title symbols summarize skimming main idea inference annotations setting re-read

It was invented by the native-born people of Middle and South America, who called them "hamacas," in the Taino language. Columbus first encountered the hammock in the Bahamas. He observed in 1492 that “people were sleeping in nets between the trees." He brought the hammock back to Europe where sailors started using them extensively because swinging while suspended in the air led to better sleep than they were previously experiencing on the dirty ship floor.

TURN YOUR YARD INTO A VACATION-WORTHY OASIS Hang a hammock: Few things evoke feelings of relaxation better than a hammock. Fitted between two trees (or two posts if trees are sparse), a hammock is an ideal place to grab a nap or read a book.

Save money and stay cool as temperatures rise Excessive energy bills can be a concern in spring and summer, just as much as they are in the winter. So how can you save money while keeping your home cool? The solution is simple: Top up your attic insulation. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary over the warmer months. Most attics are insulated, but oftentimes the amount of insulation present is inadequate - especially in older homes. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay a fire- and moisture-resistant batt insulation on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first layer. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists; cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather-stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. When a house is insulated properly, energy savings can add up over time. Remember, insulation starts working the moment it is installed and can last for the life of the building. MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER

2. GEOGRAPHY: What is the largest desert in Africa?

Maintaining the proper chemical balance of pool water will help keep it clean and protect system components from damage. The pH level of pool water measures its acidity or alkalinity. The pH level should be between 7.4 and 7.6 for best results. Latham Pool Products says water that is too acidic can cause eye and skin irritation and damage liners or equipment with corrosion. High pH may cause cloudy water and make chlorine less active. Again, frequent testing helps pool owners understand their water chemistry better and make adjustments.

One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of falls is to improve lighting around the home. The National Institutes of Health state that adequate lighting is important at entrances to the home, stairways, hallways, and other frequently traversed areas. Make sure lighting fixtures are using the highest wattage light bulb allowed. Artificial lighting sources become even more vital in fall and autumn, when natural light is less abundant in a home. In addition, install lighting outdoors by the front door, over the garage and where garbage pails are stored to facilitate safe passage.

DID YOU KNOW? The American Association of Poison Control Centers says that fatal and nonfatal poisonings overwhelmingly occur among adults. This is largely attributed to the opioid epidemic in the United States and overdoses linked to prescription medications. The National Safety Council says more than 90 percent of nonfatal poisonings and 99 percent of fatalities attributed to poisonings occur in adults older than 19. The NSC says that, in 2019, the most recent year for data, there were 65,773 preventable poisoning deaths in the United States.

Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings. EMPLOYMENT
