1212 Rochester St., Honeoye Falls (585) 624-2301 • www.corbyscollisionhfl.com Prevent bugs, sap and other substances from ruining a vehicle Insects and bird droppings Splattered bugs and avian surprises dropped from above can be a messy, unsightly nuisance. Their acidic composition also may cause them to damage paint over time. Bugs and droppings can be sticky, so you will need to work with something that will remove the splatter without removing the paint in the process. A product like WD-40 may help. This oily product is normally used on rust and hinges. When applied with a cloth and allowed to penetrate the stain, it can loosen difficult-to-remove sticky substances. Always test any product you use in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it doesn’t damage or discolor your the paint. Insects or droppings that are fresh may come off relatively easily with a good washing or hosing off of the car. Retailers also sell specialty insect sponges to remove bugs and other debris.

Fu n Fac t What is the meaning of ‘take a penny/leave a penny?’ The words ‘take a penny, leave a penny’ refer to the tray, dish, cup, or other container found in local stores, gas stations, and other places, where customers can leave or take coins for cash transactions, as required. ‘Take a Penny/Leave a Penny' can also be applied to a bigger picture, with 'penny' representing kind deeds and words. A person 'leaving a penny' is spreading good vibes all around, while someone 'taking a penny' is benefiting from another's goodwill. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Yesterday, our beloved corgi mix, Shemp, was laid to rest. I feel so guilty. He passed from heatstroke after being out in the backyard for just one hour. I never realized that just the heat outdoors could be deadly to dogs. I always was conscientious about dangerous situations; I never once left Shemp in a hot car or walked him on hot sidewalks. Yet a few minutes of inattention, and my Shemp was suddenly in great distress. I rushed him to the veterinarian, but he just didn’t make it. Please warn your readers to keep their dogs inside on hot days and to monitor them closely for signs of heat stress. -- Devastated in Houston Dear Devastated: I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Shemp. Thank you for warning other readers of the dangers of summer heat. Being outdoors during the extreme temperatures that we’ve experienced this summer, often passing 100 degrees in many states, is dangerous for dogs and other pets. Here are a few ways to keep them safe from heat injury. -- Walk dogs before sunrise and after sunset. Under a hot sun, sidewalks can quickly burn a dog’s paws, and heat and humidity can take a toll on their health. -- Do not leave pets outside unsupervised. Even if they’re just in the backyard, you might not notice their distress until it’s too late. -- Provide a shelter from the sun. A shelter with open sides and a solid top allows airflow and protects from the sun when your dog is outside. -- Make water available all day, everywhere. Carry water on walks, keep their indoor bowl full and provide a water bowl outside. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
Feral Cat Colony Getting Out of Hand DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a number of feral cats living in the wooded area behind our house. I know that these cats normally can’t be acclimated to indoor living, but watching their colony expand isn’t desirable, either. So I’d like to get them to a vet and have them spayed or neutered, and either rehome them somehow or release them again. Any tips on doing this? — Sharon in Atlanta DEAR SHARON: The most common and probably most effective way to catch feral cats is to trap them one at a time using a live trap. They are available at hardware and home-improvement stores, at some pet stores or online. Before starting, find out if there is a feral cat rescue organization in your area. In Atlanta, the nonprofit LifeLine Animal Project may be able to loan you traps, as well as provide sterilization services. Otherwise, contact the veterinarian you plan to work with and make sure he or she is OK with treating, spaying and neutering the cats, and find out the prices in advance. Depending on laws in your area and on who owns the woods behind your property, you may only be able to set the traps on your property. If the feral cats don’t visit regularly, you’ll first need to lure them using food they’re attracted to. When they come around looking for this food, set up the live trap. Trap, neuter and release (TNR) programs typically release the treated cats back into their home territory, as relocation often doesn’t work. Expect the cats you trap to continue their lives in the woods — with the realization that the colony likely won’t grow over time. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

RAVES Big Thank You A big thank you to the civic minded person who gave money for a new American flag! We are looking good at Little Lakes Community Center! Thanks to the person who donated money for our new flag and the landscape volunteers who spread 75 bags of mulch and cleaned up the flower beds! Thanks for the dog bags! Thank you to the person that put dog poop bags on my porch with a note. I must’ve missed one while walking more than one dog! Sorry if my pup ruined your green grass. I know how much you love dogs! Livingston Murals Not only do I enjoy seeing all the new murals when driving into work, but love the uniqueness behind each design and that they are all painted by local aspiring muralists. I hope to stop by them all sometime soon.
Pedestrian Crosswalks I think it’s time for some driver education. Drivers don’t seem to know that pedestrians have the right of way at these crosswalks. I watched a little boy on [local road] trying to cross at a marked crosswalk at this intersection. Nobody stopped to let him cross. I was waiting to make a right turn onto [local road], waiting until this little boy safely crossed. The driver behind me was honking angrily. Finally, an adult male came to his rescue and made sure he crossed safely. I see this law being broken all the time. Disrespect I do not understand the disrespect in today’s world. My husband was not a Veteran, but he was always very patriotic. He passed away a few years ago. He loved pinwheels, seeing them blowing in the wind. I found a large 16” red, white, and blue pinwheel with white polka dots, which was 36” tall and placed it at his grave for the last two years. It did not cost a lot of money but was worth millions in memories to my family. It disappeared! There was no windstorm to pull it 10” out of the ground and blow it away. And nothing else in the whole cemetery was disturbed. So, I know someone took it! I hope every time you look at it you remember where you got it and how you got it. Such disrespect stealing from a grave! We all share the Canal! We always love seeing other boats enjoying the Canal when we kayak from [local town] to [local town] and back, but we would appreciate it if power boaters slowed down when passing smaller boats and when approaching wildlife, like groups of ducks and geese, and especially those with young. What’s the rush? Slow down, enjoy the scenery, and you’ll be surprised at all of the amazing things you’ll see. We all share the Canal. Please be respectful.
Festivals are back! I love seeing all the festivals and events happening again! Of course, I understand the risk of covid-19 is still here and we should take precautions. Even if I don’t go to the events I love that we are getting back to fun this summer! From the Oatka Festival in LeRoy, to the Dansville Balloon Festival to the West Sparta OldFashioned Day and everything in-between! Disc Golf Course A few years back, the town I live in installed in a disc golf course and I cannot tell you how much we enjoy it and use it. Thank you to everyone that had a part in that. I know my family appreciates it!

How To Avoid Growing Bored In Retirement • Embrace a new hobby. Whether it’s perfecting your golf game, writing that novel, learning to cook like a gourmet chef or whatever else you might have always wanted to do, retirement is a great time to do it. • Volunteer. If a part-time job is not up your alley, then consider volunteering in your community. Volunteers are always in demand, and volunteering with a local charity can provide a sense of purpose and provide opportunities to meet likeminded fellow retirees, all while helping to quell your boredom.
HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Obey the rules. The opportunity to explore is a great reason to visit parks, but it’s important that park visitors adhere to park rules by hiking and camping in only those areas designated as hikerand camper-friendly. By veering off course, park visitors may inadvertently disturb local plant and wildlife.

SHOPPERS SAVE BIG ON GROCERIES WITH HEALTHY SAVINGS® POWERED BY AARP FOUNDATION (NAPSI) — Good nutrition is important at any age. But for older adults on a tight budget, regular access to nutritious foods can be limited—and expensive. A new program aims to change that by making it easier to get healthy foods at the local grocery store for an affordable price. With Healthy Savings® powered by AARP Foundation, shoppers pay a small fee of $4.99 per calendar year for a card that can save them up to $200 a month on groceries.
9. FAMOUS QUOTES: Which 19thcentury author and philosopher once said, “One must maintain a little bit of summer, even in the middle of winter”?
The program is part of AARP Foundation’s work to help people over 50 with limited income eat more nutritious foods, ultimately improving their well-being. Research shows that more than 10 million older adults don’t get enough nutritious food on a daily basis, most often because they can’t afford it.
10. AD SLOGANS: Which product’s advertising slogan is “Obey your thirst”?
Eating healthy is about more than affordability, however. Not only does Healthy Savings reduce costs, it also identifies healthy options in the store. All products available through Healthy Savings are scored against the USDA’s Healthy Eating Index to make sure they qualify as nutritious. The index makes it convenient to choose the healthiest foods, which include lean meats, eggs, yogurt, whole grains, and a wide range of other options.
Answers 1. Baffin Island. 2. Sid. 3. Someone who designs or enjoys solving crossword puzzles. 4. Archie Bunker, “All in the Family.” 5. It was invented in his honor after he refused to kill a bear on a hunting trip. 8. About 1 inch. 9. Henry David Thoreau. 10. Sprite.
The typical over-50 diet scores low in key food groups like whole grains and dairy. By encouraging the purchase of more of these nutrients through coupon discounts, Healthy Savings can help older adults: • Lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. • Reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. • More easily manage a chronic disease. • Increase or maintain energy levels. Shoppers who sign up for Healthy Savings receive a card in the mail and can download a mobile app, both of which can be used at 22,000 grocery stores across the U.S. for instant savings at checkout. The savings come on top of any from store loyalty cards and manufacturers’ coupons (so long as coupons don’t add up to more than the price of the item). Each week, new coupons are automatically loaded onto the card and app—no coupon clipping required. Over the course of a year, Healthy Savings can save shoppers as much as $2,400. More information, including recipes and tips for shopping smart, is at aarpfoundation.org/save. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Discounts on Phone and Internet Have you heard of Lifeline? Started many years ago to help low-income individuals with their phone costs, it’s been expanded to include internet at home, offering a $9.25 monthly discount. That $9.25 savings doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re like me, nowadays, you’re converting every dollar saved into food. That $9.25, for example, could turn into a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk, or even a pound of ground beef, a package of hamburgers buns and most of a can of beans. You’ll need to qualify for Lifeline. One way you do that is if you (or anyone in your household) receive benefits from Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, veterans pensions, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid and others, or through having verifiable low income. (You’ll need paperwork to prove it.) You can sign up in a number of ways, such as by mail or online at nv.fcc. gov/lifeline. Scroll through the information on that page. Call 800-2349473 for more information or to ask that an application be sent to you by mail. But there’s more. In addition, if you qualify for Lifeline, you likely also qualify for an even bigger assistance: the Affordable Connectivity Program. ACP is new and can give you a $30 monthly discount on your internet. Once you’re in the Lifeline program, call your internet provider and enroll in ACP with them. There’s no need to fill out another application. There are hundreds of internet providers that are part of the program, including some big names like Xfinity, AT&T and Spectrum. In some cases, that $30 gets you internet without you having to pay anything additional. In other words, free internet. Get the details from your internet provider. For a list of providers by state, go to www.fcc.gov/affordable-connectivity-program-providers. Get more information on the Affordable Connectivity Program at www.fcc.gov/acp or call 877-384-2575. ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD Host your own welcome party Rather than waiting around for others to welcome you to the neighborhood, take the bull by the horns and introduce yourself to your neighbors in a fun way. Host an open house party and invite your new neighbors. What better way to converse with others than with food, beverages and a festive atmosphere? SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.
The luxury of all summer’s sweet sensation is to be found when one lies at length in the warm, fragrant grass, soaked with sunshine, aware of regions of blossoming clover and of a high heaven filled with the hum of innumerous bees. ~Harriet E. Prescott, The Atlantic Monthly, August 1865 REAL ESTATE

They work well initially; then the deer get used to

If you are at the point of giving up, build a deer fence or choose plants that they don’t prefer like daffodils. Both are methods gardeners choose to protect their plants from deer.

MAKE THE MOST OF LIMITED SPACE Put paint to work. Paint is another way to make the most of a limited space. Painting certain pieces of furniture the same color as the wall can make the furniture blend in and feel less imposing. The result is a room that feels calm and open, even if there is less space to move around than homeowners might have grown accustomed to in their larger homes.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* Add these to the list of items to eliminate the odor of cooking cabbage: a heel of bread, a whole walnut or a pinch of baking soda. * To travel with pleated skirts, use this packing trick: Turn the skirt inside out and straighten all the pleats. Then tape the bottom so that all the pleats are held together. Next, feed the skirt into a leg of pantyhose with the foot cut off. You end up with a nice tube, which you can tuck into the sides of your luggage. * When traveling for more than a few days, stick your plants into the bathtub with a little bit of water. They soak it up, and you don’t have to have someone come over and water your plants. This will only work for a week or less, though. -- John McF. of Baton Rouge, Louisiana * I keep grocery lists on my computer. When I am going to go shopping, I print out the list and fold the paper in half. Then I slip my coupons into the fold. Keeps them handy when I am shopping. -- Reader in Maryland
WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE Always use appropriate language. When using a mobile phone in public, refrain from peppering conversations with expletives or graphic language. Children may be nearby without your knowledge, but even if there are no young people in the immediate vicinity, your fellow adults likely don’t want to hear foul or graphic language.

Volunteering benefits people of all ages, but can be especially beneficial to children. Studies have indicated that teenagers who volunteer are less likely to become pregnant or use drugs. In addition, in a review of 60 studies on child engagement, Child Trends found that children who participate in civic engagement programs are likely to be more involved in school, to graduate from high school and to hold more positive civic attitudes than those who do not get involved in such programs. Getting kids to volunteer as they progress through adolescence may not be so difficult. In its 2014 analysis of volunteering trends, Child Trends found that 39 percent of twelfth grade students volunteered at least once a month in 2014 compared to just 27 percent of eighth graders. Older students might feel compelled to volunteer to improve their college admissions applications, but parents can take steps to get their younger children excited at the prospect of volunteering. Set a positive example. Young children want to emulate their parents, so moms and dads who volunteer may find ready and willing partners in their children. Parents can inform their children when they volunteer and why they do so before bringing kids along to join them. Don’t forget fun. Young children may be more likely to embrace volunteering if the activity is fun. Kids might not find it too fun to sit next to their parents while mom and dad balance a soup kitchen’s books, but a beach cleanup excursion or a trip to refurbish an inner city park may inspire kids to spend a lifetime giving back to their communities and helping the less fortunate. Keep it simple. Kids may not enjoy volunteering activities that consume too much time or make them feel exhausted. As kids grow older, parents can encourage them to embrace more challenging activities and/or commit more time to volunteering. But keep things simple with especially young children or older children who have never before volunteered. Try and try again. It might take some trial and error before parents find volunteering opportunities their children truly enjoy. When volunteering with children for the first time, be careful not to commit to more than one day. If children enjoy themselves, then parents can commit more time. If kids do not seem excited by an activity, parents won’t feel guilty or let the charity down by not returning. Children can benefit greatly by volunteering, and parents can get their youngsters involved at an early age.

Smoking, Symptoms Biggest Factors in COPD Prognosis
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
---
Accepting New Patients.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with COPD a year and a half ago. I seem to be unable to get answers from my pulmonary doctor, as he is always busy. How fast does COPD progress? I’m 78 years old, I’m in reasonably good health, and I exercise regularly. I have chronic bronchitis with a slight amount of emphysema. I had been coughing a little during the day, had mucus in the morning and coughed at night for two to three hours after bedtime -- to the extent of having to use a rescue inhaler to settle down and get back to sleep. After he put me on Trelegy, all of those symptoms disappeared, and I feel perfectly normal except for shortness of breath. My other question is, what is the life expectancy of a person diagnosed with COPD? I’ve read answers to this all over the map, from two or three years after diagnosis to 15 or more years. I would presume that it depends on other factors such as physical condition, exercise, weight, etc. I would like some kind of guideline for someone in my condition. -- T.J. ANSWER: There are two major types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: chronic bronchitis, where the primary problem is productive cough; and emphysema, which is destruction of the small airways. Shortness of breath is a common feature of all types of COPD. The most prevalent cause is smoking. I can’t answer your questions on rate of progression and overall prognosis without much more information, but it is certainly a good sign that many of your symptoms are well-controlled on treatment. The single biggest factor in rate of progression of COPD is whether you are a smoker, but not being able to exercise, being male and being very underweight are additional risk factors for faster progression. In someone with COPD, the decline over months to years can cause symptoms to occur first with exercise, and then when at rest. Once people have severe symptoms at rest, the prognosis becomes quite poor. No medication can reverse lung damage. Inhaled steroids reduce inflammation and can slow progression somewhat. Inhaled bronchodilators open airways and make breathing easier. Inhaled anticholinergics reduce secretions. Trelegy contains all of these medicines and is appropriate for people with severe COPD or those who do not have good symptom control with a less intensive regimen. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

COLD MEDICINE INGREDIENTS CAN RAISE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE (NAPSI)—There’s a reason it’s called the “common” cold: Adults have an average two to three colds per year and children even more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Problem Most people recover from a cold within a week to 10 days. But decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications, according to the American Heart Association. Read The Label Be sure to read labels on over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have high blood pressure (HBP). Some contain decongestants such as oxymetazoline, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine. You should also look for warnings related to high blood pressure or HBP medication and talk to your health care professional before taking OTC medications or supplements. And don’t stop taking prescribed medications without talking to your doctor. Some OTCs are also high in sodium, which can raise blood pressure. So look at the active and inactive ingredients lists for the words “sodium” or “soda.” If you have high blood pressure, you should consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium a day from all sources—and one dose of some OTCs can contain more than a whole day’s allowance. Be Careful With Supplements Or Natural (Naturopathic) Remedies Special pills, vitamins or drinks don’t substitute for prescription medications and lifestyle modifications. Talk to your health care provider before taking any OTC drug or supplement that claims to lower your blood pressure. They may not work as advertised and may interfere with other medications. Some, like natural licorice and diet pills, can even raise your blood pressure. What Else To Watch For Other drugs and substances that can raise your blood pressure include: • Alcohol • Amphetamines • Antidepressants • Atypical Antipsychotics (such as clozapine and olanzapine) • Caffeine • Oral Contraceptives • Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs: ibuprofen and naproxen sodium, for example) • Illicit Drugs • Systemic Corticosteroids (for example, prednisone and methylprednisolone) Learn More: For more information about keeping your heart healthy, go to www. heart.org/hbp. “I join with our County veteran population in thanking Jason for his support and advocacy for veterans’ issues,” stated Board of Supervisors Chairman David LeFeber. “He’s done amazing work during his time here. We’re sad to see him go, but wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
ivingston County Veteran Services Director Jason Skinner served his last day today after more than six years leading the County’s Veteran Services department. Skinner first began working with the County’s veterans in this role in September of 2015. During his time at the department’s helm, he’s worked tirelessly to improve the lives of area veterans by fighting for access to benefits, supporting the funding of life-saving mental health resources, and acting as an advocate for veterans as they interact with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Among his many accomplishments, Skinner said he’s most proud of the Veteran Services department’s paper-to-digital transition. The office is now 100 percent paperless, with all files being scanned and digitally uploaded directly to the VA, resulting in more efficient and accessible records. Technology upgrades have also given the office the ability to perform virtual appeals hearings directly from the Veterans Services office in Mount Morris. Skinner credits County leadership for his ability to accomplish so much while serving as director. “I am honored to have served the County in this role and would like to share credit with the Livingston County Board of Supervisors, County Administrator Ian Coyle, and Probation Director Lynne Mignemi for their continued support,” he said. “The military instills a sense of responsibility and prepares veterans to become stewards of their community. Public service is a great career path for veterans that want to continue serving honorably, especially with the support of a great employer like Livingston County.” Skinner worked to connect housebound veterans with the VA’s Home Based Primary Care team while director. The team provides patients experiencing complex, chronic, progressively disabling diseases with comprehensive, long-term home care. Skinner said this service is life-changing for veterans in need of it, especially in a rural community like Livingston County. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Livingston County Veteran’s Monument, a more than 8,000 square foot memorial in the shape of an American flag, dedicated to the veterans of Livingston County. The monument features 255 red metal poppies, hand crafted by local veterans, which adorn the red stripes of the flag. Skinner helped negotiate increased funding for the Joseph P. Dwyer Peer-to-Peer Veterans’ Support Program with state government during his time as director. His direct advocacy for life-saving peer-topeer support resources resulted in 150 percent more revenue allocated to each county Veteran Service Agency in New York.

Skinner is a veteran of the U.S. Army, which he joined in 2003. He served with the 3rd Squadron of the 17th Cavalry in Iraq, achieving the rank of corporal before his honorable discharge from the armed services. Skinner was recently inducted into the New York State Senate Veteran’s Hall of Fame for his efforts on behalf of the state’s veteran population. Beyond his work with the County, Skinner also serves as a New York State County Service Officer Association President, National Association of Counties Veterans and Military Families Vice Chairman, member of the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, and Finger Lakes Veterans Advocacy Council President. Livingston County has named Deputy Director of Veteran Services David Terry as the department’s Interim Director. Skinner offered words of high praise for Terry’s work with Veteran Services. “Without David Terry none of these achievements would have been possible,” said Skinner. “In many cases, David was the backbone of the office’s operations.” For more information on the Livingston County Veteran’s Services department, please visit https://www.livingstoncounty. us/275/Veterans-Services. About Livingston County: Founded in 1821, Livingston County, N.Y. is comprised of more than 61,000 residents in 17 towns located across 631 square miles of the Finger Lakes region. Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.

THE FLORIDA KEYS DELIVER EXPERIENCES UNLIKE ANYWHERE ELSE (NAPSI)—The most significant worldwide travel trend today is individuals’ desire for experiential travel. Gone is the era of ticking destinations off a “bucket list”; today’s traveler seeks personally transformative encounters with people and places that bring deeper meaning and lifelong memories to a vacation. The Florida Keys & Key West abound in unique experiences that can be found “Only in the Keys” throughout the 125-mile-long island chain.
Magic Maze UNITED STATES ATTORNEYS GENERAL
On a drive down the famed Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West you’ll enjoy the distinctive character of individual islands. In Key Largo, take a 90-minute canal cruise on the African Queen, the original vessel from the 1951 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. A registered national historic site, the boat looks much as it did on the silver screen. For a “hook and cook” experience in Islamorada, book a charter in the Sportfishing Capital of the World for exhilarating offshore, reef or backcountry fishing—then take your catch to a local restaurant to be prepared according to a signature local recipe. Encounter rescued sea turtles during a behind-the-scenes tour of the planet’s first licensed veterinary hospital for turtles. Located in Marathon, The Turtle Hospital rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured turtles and, whenever possible, releases them back into the ocean. West of Marathon, you’ll drive across the landmark Seven Mile Bridge, one of the world’s longest segmental bridges and the centerpiece of the iconic Florida Keys Overseas Highway. Discover tiny Key deer on Big Pine Key. Endangered Key deer live only in the Lower Keys and can be spotted grazing during early morning and at dusk. The 9,000-acre National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect the diminutive deer and other indigenous wildlife. In Key West, explore history with former President Harry Truman and author Ernest Hemingway. The Harry S. Truman Little White House Museum is Florida’s only presidential museum. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is where the writer lived and wrote masterpieces in the 1930s. Be sure to pet a descendant of Hemingway’s six-toed cat. Finally, take a selfie just 90 miles from Cuba at Key West’s red, black and yellow Southernmost Point marker that denotes the southernmost land mass in the continental United States.
