2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon red food coloring heart-shaped pancake cutters or cookie cutters (optional) butter, for garnish (optional) powdered sugar, for garnish (optional) maple syrup, for garnish (optional) fresh berries, for garnish (optional)

In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir well. In separate large bowl, whisk together egg, buttermilk, unsalted butter, vanilla extract and food coloring. Add to flour mixture; stir to combine. Allow mixture to sit 5 minutes. Heat nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Brush with oil or butter. Add about 1/4 cup batter to skillet. Cook about 2 minutes, or until bubbles start to form on top. Flip and cook 1-2 minutes, or until bottom is lightly browned. Serve immediately with butter, powdered sugar, syrup and berries, if desired. Tip: If using pancake or cookie cutters, be sure to coat with oil so pancakes don’t stick. Place cutters in skillet and pour batter into cutters. Remove cutters before flipping. 2ND ANNUAL SUMMER BASH

at Farmer’s Creekside a Huge Success! BY AMANDA DUDEK As rays from the descending sun danced on the nearby banks of the Oatka, the 2nd annual Summer Bash was just getting into full swing. Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn in LeRoy once again hosted this funfilled celebration to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of WNY (CFF). Genesee Valley Publications staff were joined by several friends, family members, and advertising partners to help make this event even bigger than it was last year.

The Summer Bash was indeed a terrific success. Not only did this stunning local eatery provide the perfect atmosphere for celebration, but they also went above and beyond in their generosity. Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn donated three huge gift baskets to our silent auction which garnered over $600 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of WNY. On behalf of GVP and CFF, we would like to thank Creekside for donating so much in support of such a worthy cause!

The Summer Bash was open to the public, and guests gathered along the tavern’s creek level patio, enjoying the outdoor bar and moving to the live music—thanks to Encore Events—flowing from the outdoor stage. On this patio as well as on one of its deck areas, guests strolled between vendors for select wine, brews, and spirits tastings.

Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) has been working hard to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives. CFF funds research and drug development, advocates treatment tailored to the individual, and works to guarantee access to specialized care based on ever-developing best practices.

Sarah Christ and Kara Ivison of Home magazine produced by Genesee Valley Publications (GVP), joined Sarah Farmer and Maria Valencia of Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn to make this possible. These vendors brought some of their finest and most popular selections. All were enthusiastic and gracious as they shared their specialties. Among these were such vendors as Thin Man Brewery, Opici Wine & Spirits, Ziobaffa Wine, Blue Nectar, Lockhouse Distillery, Ravines Wine Cellars, Rohrbach Brewing Co., Hercules Mulligan, Black Button Distilling, Genesee Brewery, BeerPass, Deep Eddy Vodka, Monsieur Touton, Norwhey Nordic Seltzers, and Iron Smoke Distillery.

Rochester’s Finest works with CFF in their mission to find a cure for all people living with CF. Thanks to the cystic fibrosis drug therapies now available, and thanks to the Foundation and its supporters, many people with CF are living into their 40’s and beyond! As always, every possible item was made from scratch, right down to some of the simple syrups in the cocktails. Guests could simply could not get enough! “The Summer Bash at Creekside was awesome!” said guest and LeRoy resident Chuck Flynn. “The food, friends, food, music, & drink were superb! If you missed it, put it on your calendar next year, like, right now.” The Summer Bash was also part of GVP’s MacKenzie McGrain’s efforts as one of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Rochester’s Finest. “I would like to thank everyone who participated in the silent auction to help raise over $2,000 in funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,” said McGrain. “I am so grateful to my mentor, Christine White, for nominating me as one of Rochester’s Finest honorees this year, as well as to Patty Schwarzweller the director of CFF of Western New York. I would like to also thank Laurie Abbott, Sarah Christ, and Kara Ivison for guiding me to success before, during, and after the event. HI! I am . I am a Happy, Silly 4-yr old golden retriever, lab mix. How can you not love this face?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I live in hot, humid Florida and have the opportunity to adopt two kittens. My home has no air conditioning -- only ceiling and floor fans. When I return home during the summer, the indoor temperature can reach 95 degrees with high humidity. Can a kitten handle such high indoor temperatures and high humidity for nine hours a day? If there is any possibility of harm, I will not obtain the kittens. -- Ann T., via email DEAR ANN: If there’s doubt in your mind, you already know the answer. I commend you for thinking of the welfare of the kittens first. Now, I’ll tell you a similar story. During my first years out of college, I rented a small apartment in sunny, humid Orlando that had no air conditioning either. However, the first thing I purchased was a window unit air conditioner. Not for me, but for my cat. It was a significant expense, and it boosted my electric bill dramatically, but I didn’t think twice about it. Pets rely on us to keep them safe, fed and comfortable. An indoor cat doesn’t have control over the temperature and humidity in the home. As the temperature rises, they have few options to cool off -- no breezy, shady spots to lounge in, not much fresh air. At 95 degrees, even with a full bowl of water nearby, pets can suffer a heat injury. Kittens are even more vulnerable. If you’d like to adopt the kittens, first work out a way to keep your home’s temperature below 80 degrees. Pets are an investment in happiness. Their comfort and safety are part of that investment. DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

What is wrong with people? I help a neighbor who runs a consignment shop outside of [local town]. It has clothing bins for donations of clothing and shoes outside in her parking lot. People keep leaving items like glassware, children’s toys, old furniture, etc. The truck only picks up the clothing donations in the bins. The store owner must then pay to dispose of all the stuff people leave there. We even left a note out there asking people to please donate [those items] elsewhere or to put it at the end of their own driveway with a “free” sign. If it’s junk, please dispose of it yourself. It has been costly for the shop owner, who runs a small business, and hurtful (to say the least) to find a new pile of stuff there every week!

Great Job! Great job to the crews, RG&E, Frontier, Spectrum and the multiple tree service companies and anyone else for cleaning up the mess after the big storm. They worked nonstop, and I appreciate it. Thanks! The Gnomes did it! We have a back shade garden in our yard. There are gnome houses, and gnomes running rampant through the garden. Someone added to our Gnome Village. Thank you to whoever installed the three little gnomes to Summers Street. They are a great addition! Very thoughtful of you!

Time to End This is a touchy subject, but I’ll say it anyways. When will we start considering impeachment of all our leaders in Washington? I’m not taking sides in politics, but at what point do we all realize what’s happening across America? If I don’t do my job at work, I get fired. I see no difference here.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Henrietta Public Library: Event title: Rochester Craft Beer: The History and Future of the Scene Details: Will Cleveland, a Rochester native and former investigative reporter for the Democrat and Chronicle, has been covering the western New York beer scene since 2014 first at the D&C and now through a weekly newsletter. During his time chronicling beer, the Rochester scene has grown to nearly 25 breweries in Monroe County, including 13 in the city of Rochester. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Study: the Second Half of Our Lives Sometimes the results of research and studies are suspect if we don’t trust the sources, but AARP and National Geographic recently published a joint study on the realities of the second half of life, and it doesn’t get any better than that. Their study covered the big topics as we age: health, relationships, financial security, housing, independent living, end of life, retirement and more. Here are some highlights: • We care most about our brain health, our independence and our relationships, in that order, as we move into our 70s. By the time we reach our 80s, it’s relationships that spike to the top of our list of concerns. • Guess what plunges by the time we reach our 70s? Work, and it’s no surprise. We’ve been there and done that, and the idea of climbing the ladder of success at work no longer appeals to us. • Health is a curious category, but it makes sense once you think about it. It seems that those who are the healthiest are the ones who are most concerned about their health, likely because they’d like to stay that way and remain active. They’re into walking and exercising and taking flu shots, whereas the ones who have a serious medical condition are less concerned, perhaps having accepted the reality of less-than-stellar health. But age plays a part in that: We’re most concerned about health in our 60s, much less concerned in our 70s, and very concerned again in our 80s, mostly about stamina, strength and flexibility. There’s something to be said for picking a form of exercise and sticking with it, especially if it helps with those three concerns. At the end of the day, the older we get, the more we care about meaningful relationships. As AARP noted, “Friends, family and community are the hallmarks of finding happiness. Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college.
