Kevetta Farms Named Livingston County Farm
of the Year
Farm to be honored and agriculture industry celebrated August 15th at the Farmer Neighbor Event BY THE LIVINGSTON COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
T
ucked back in the hills of Sparta, Kevin and Annetta Herrington, along with their children Jessica and Tyler, farm a 50-cow dairy operation, milking both Holsteins and Jersey cows. They also sell both high protein and butterfat milk, and breed and sell calves with superior genetics throughout the northeast. The Livingston County Area Chamber of Commerce and Livingston County Farm Bureau are pleased to announce that Kevetta Farms has been named the Livingston County Farm of the Year. The farm will be recognized and the agriculture industry celebrated at the annual Farmer Neighbor Event scheduled for Sunday, August 15th and being held at Deer Run Winery. Kevetta Farm was selected in large part due to the unique nature of this small rotational grazing super herd operation. Many of the strategic and calculated operational decisions have helped to advance the Herrington’s herd and led to it being recognized as a Super Milk producer for 15 years running.
When they first started milking, they had about 17 cows in the string, including Holsteins, Ayrshires, Jerseys and even a couple of AngusHolstein crosses. Today, they’re milking about 50 individuals, giving Kevetta Farms the time with the population being close to 2/3 Jersey and 1/3 Holstein. The farm is an intensive grazing operation with the intent of the overall operation being very efficient. Their ration is supplemented with free-choice bailage and they purchase TMR during the winter months, fed at 50% and top dressed grain according to milk production. Milking occurs in a flat-barn parlor and cows are housed in a compost pack barn which was constructed in 2011.
The farm that Kevetta Farms sits on today was purchased by Annetta’s grandfather back in the 1950s. It acted primarily as the heifer raising facilities for her family’s Holstein dairy farm located three miles down the road. Kevetta Farms was established in April 1988 when Kevin and Annetta were married, primarily consisting of Holsteins. They had returned to Annetta’s home farm and were working towards a partnership with Annetta’s parents. But unfortunately, a small 60-cow dairy could not sustain four families, so shortly after Jessica was born, their small herd was dispersed in 1991. Someday, they had hoped to return to the farm when Annetta’s father was ready to retire.
Over the years, Kevetta Farms has made a name for itself and has received many awards and accolades, from being a 15-year Super Milk producer, to the Jerseys being ranked nationally for their milk and protein production and their Holsteins being ranked in the top 200 BAA (breed age average) in the United States, along with being a recipient of the Holstein Associations Progressive Breeder Award.
When their daughter, Jessica, was very young, she loved to go to Grandma and Grandpa’s farm to help feed the calves. They gave Jessica her first calf when she was five years old and she started showing at the fair. The kids enjoyed going to the fairs and taking care of their calves during the summer. Annetta’s father sold his dairy herd on December 31, 1999. After that, Kevin and Annetta took over the old heifer facilities with the intention to purchase the 110-acre farm to raise dairy animals for their children, Jessica and Tyler, to show throughout their time as youth, as well as raise beef. At that time, they did not intend on getting back into milking cows.
FARM NEIGHBOR DINNER Sunday, August 15, 2021 • 5:00pm-9:00pm Deer Run Winery- 3772 West Lake Road, Geneseo Tickets are $30pp
On January 1, 2000, Annetta’s father passed away from pancreatic cancer, and once the estate was settled, they officially purchased the farm. Since the kids no longer had someone to supply them with calves, Kevin and Annetta encouraged them to apply for scholarships and other grants to use to purchase calves. The first Jersey came to Kevetta Farms in 2001 after Jessica won the Herbert Wheeler Scholarship put on by the Niagara Frontier Jersey Club.

Not too long after, longtime friend, Bob Hill, asked if they would raise his three Jersey heifers for him. They agreed and those individuals eventually became the foundation for the Kevetta Jersey herd. The pair started milking cows when Jessica’s first Jersey calved in. Then they milked Bob’s Jersey heifers, feeding the milk to calves. With the kids and Bob’s heifers calving in, everything fell into place and they made the decision to get back into the dairy business and officially started shipping milk in 2005.

Lifeguards at Deep Run Beach Thank you to the Deep Run Beach lifeguards who safeguarded my Border Collie who had run across Rt. 364 to the beach to take a swim in the lake. They secured her with a rope; they had and tried to find her owner in a nearby neighborhood with no success. Without knowing if anyone would show up, they held on to her, saving her from traffic, until I showed up in my car to bring her back to our home on the other side of Rt. 364. Thank you so much for preventing her from getting hit by a car. You went above and beyond, and I am so very grateful! We are reinstalling our electric fence to keep her in the yard.

S T N RA Social Security not doubled Self employed people don’t pay double. They are confusing themselves with their company. They are two different entities. The company pays half, and they pay half. Their company gets all the legal deductions a company gets, and they get a paycheck. They get all the extra perks that come with owning a company: a company car / truck, business trips, etc. If they don’t want to pay, don’t take a paycheck. Simple solution.

Can Lyme Disease Lead to Parkinson’s
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2
Henrietta
---
20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: Can Lyme disease send a person into Parkinson’s disease? I tested positive for Lyme -- I had the bulls-eye rash, fever and terrible headaches. After a month on doxycycline, my left arm started shaking and my neurologist diagnosed me with Parkinson’s. The doctor said it had nothing to do with the Lyme disease. What is your opinion? -- S.M. ANSWER: I can absolutely understand why you might suspect that the neurologist could be wrong. The coincidence seems too much to believe. However, I think your neurologist is probably correct. The different types of neurological complications of Lyme disease are many and varied. The most common are any combination of meningitis symptoms (inflammation of the lining of the brain, with headache, fever, stiff neck and light sensitivity); disorders of the cranial nerves (especially the facial nerve, so people with neurological Lyme disease can look like they have Bell’s palsy); and damage to peripheral nerves, causing pain and weakness or numbness, often resembling sciatica (but may include other parts of the body). A detailed neurological exam by a neurologist would look for signs of Parkinson’s disease -- not just the tremor you describe, but also muscle rigidity and changes in gait. These would be very unusual in Lyme disease. I did find cases resembling some aspects of Parkinson’s disease, but they improved with treatment. It is possible that the stress of the Lyme disease hastened the onset of Parkinson’s disease you were destined to get. I say your neurologist is “probably correct” because what I found -- absence of data to support a correlation -- does not mean that there is no correlation, and it is possible that time may prove Lyme disease is connected to Parkinson’s. However, I think it’s unlikely. ***

FOUR IDEAS FOR HEALTH CARE PLANNING IN RETIREMENT (NAPSI)—The Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates that a typical 65-year-old couple will spend a total of $265,000 in health care costs over the remainder of their lives. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans. Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas: 1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts. 2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential long-term care options, such as unpaid care from family and less-expensive available facilities. 3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses. 4. Forecast costs in annual spending. There are so many variables involved in estimating health care costs in retirement that trying to plan around a total lifetime budget can be overwhelming. Experts recommend that you focus on annual spending plans instead, provided that you understand costs will rise as you age. For seniors who are struggling to find cash in their retirement budgets to offset unexpected health care expenses, it may be a good idea to take stock right now of all your assets. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. You should review your life insurance policy from time to time and determine whether or not it’s still needed. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. If you own a life insurance policy you no longer need or can afford, you may be able to generate immediate cash to pay your health care expenses by selling that policy for immediate cash. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office today at 888-921-3793.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Exercise Can Reduce Risk of Alzheimer’s Can we do this? Exercise twice a week for 10 minutes each time to prevent Alzheimer’s disease? Of course we can. Researchers examined the records and followed the progress of 250,000 patients who had mild cognitive impairment. They concluded that moderate physical activity more than once a week reduced the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 18%. We need to do more for our brain health than work the daily crossword puzzle or brush up on our chess skills. Physical exercise protects the brain, too, per the study. The key is that it should be moderate to vigorous exercise. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, examples of moderate exercise include walking 3-4 mph (a brisk walk while you’re still able to hold a conversation), vacuuming and washing windows, mowing the lawn and doubles tennis. Other sources are more specific: water aerobics for 30 minutes and raking leaves for 30 minutes. For comparison, examples of light exercise include washing dishes and using a computer. Vigorous exercises are things like shoveling, singles tennis and playing basketball or soccer. Having said that, there are more parts of our bodies that need exercise than just our brains. That’s where more time in an activity comes into play. Instead of a mere 10 minutes per day, we’re told to shoot for 150 minutes of exercise per week, or 30 minutes onr five days. One place to start developing an exercise plan is Mayoclinic.org. Type “moderate exercise” in the search box and scroll down the results until you find something interesting. Among the 600 choices are frequency of workout, using weighted hula hoops, Zumba, secrets to a healthy heart and so much more. The earlier in life we start exercising for our brains and bodies, the longer we’ll stay healthy as we age. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS Many farmers’ markets offer foods that are organically grown and are produced without GMOs. Farmers’ market retailers also tend to give firsthand accounts of where their foods come from and how they are grown or raised.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

To improve one’s odds of getting a scholarship, consider the following tips. • Get involved with the community. Many scholarship sponsors seek individuals who are committed to volunteerism. Plus, volunteering for various groups puts students in the path of information about scholarships from these organizations. • Use scholarship search engines. Those who search for scholarship sponsors should find plenty of results if they peruse scholarship search engines such as Scholarships. com, CollegeBoard.com and FastWeb.com. • Check the local newspaper. The coupon section of the Sunday newspaper may feature scholarships, as might the classified section. This is a great resource for finding locally based scholarships. • Use networking contacts. Students should ask anyone they know if they are aware of any scholarship opportunities. Students who develop a rapport with guidance counselors or the financial aid department at their prospective colleges or universities may learn about scholarship opportunities that are not highly publicized. These people may have the inside track on scholarship information. • Apply for all available scholarships. Now is not the time for students to become lazy. Students should apply for as any scholarships for which they meet the eligibility requirements.

* Stuck zippers can be loosened with graphite powder, or simply by tracing a pencil lead over the zipper. * “The best way to get a bloodstain out of clothing is by dousing the stain with hydrogen peroxide and washing as usual. For clay stains, you absolutely must have a Fels-Naptha bar. It looks like a bar of soap, and you wet the material and rub in the soap. It’s magical. This, coming from a softball mom whose daughter loves to slide.” -- A.A. in Florida * Clear bins make it easy to group like items in your pantry. You can remove the bin, get what you need and replace it, rather than digging through cans and boxes on a shelf and having to straighten it back up when you’re done. * A better use for soda: Use it to scrub your pots and pans. If you have grime and slime, try letting the acids in soda pop work it out for you. Pour enough soda to cover the bottom of the pots or pans and let soak for 5-10 minutes. Then scrub away. * “If you have a retractable cord on your vacuum, try this trick. Clip a clothespin at the optimum length, and the cord will not retract past that point. So, no more snapping right out of the outlet, which used to happen to me.” -- P.L. in Tennessee * Use rubbing alcohol to clean window frames. It evaporates quickly with no residue left behind.

NEW ENERGY STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES TO SUPPORT RENEWABLES POST COVID-19 (NAPSI) — Cleaner air can improve public health, maybe even save lives. Fortunately, renewable energy resources—wind, sun, hydropower and the like—are now producing more electricity than coal. That’s where innovative energy storage solutions come in. They help create a cleaner world, encouraging investment into clean, green, renewable energy. To help, engineers and policymakers are increasingly turning their attention to energy storage solutions. New bi-partisan efforts in states such as New York and the Trump administration are in alignment to support new energy storage technologies that drastically improve the economics of wind and solar projects. The global rise in electricity generation from renewable sources has led to increased demand for advanced batteries that can be used to firm up this intermittent supply. This requirement is particularly important in areas where grid connections may be tenuous, unreliable or even non-existent. Additional demand for advanced batteries is presented by grid applications such as peak-shifting and Transmission and Distribution (T&D) capital deferral. Energy storage systems provide many ways to manage the power supply for a more resilient energy infrastructure, and bring cost savings to utilities and consumers. Batteries allow the use of electricity whenever it’s needed, not only when it’s generated. However, traditional battery economics and performance have not proved helpful as utilities look to increase renewable penetration through long-duration energy storage. The Problem One of the challenges to growing a North American energy storage industry, however, has been a dependency on a supply chain of hardware components, metals and chemicals, many of which come from outside North America. As well, metals such as lithium and vanadium used in some batteries are impacted by price volatility and security of supply. An Answer Those same risks do not apply to zinc-air batteries. Zinc is abundant and inexpensive, with a significant North American supply. Its chemistry is robust and safe. A zinc-air battery has decoupled energy and power, making it one of the lowest-cost longduration battery storage solutions available. A safer, cleaner future requires less polluted air which means replacement of carbonbased power generation with renewable, sustainable sources of electricity. Longduration, low-cost energy storage systems such as zinc-air will be a key driver to a quicker path towards a greener future. A “bet” on energy storage is a wager that will deliver a cleaner planet that will thrive for current and future generations, suggests Ron MacDonald, president and CEO of Zinc8 Energy Solutions, the leader in zinc-air battery technology, a unique flow battery technology using zinc and air as fuel. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Heatstroke Almost Killed Her Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I never keep my dog “Alfie” in the car, even on cool days. Last Sunday, I took Alfie to the park to get some exercise. It was hot, and after a short while Alfie came back to me, panting heavily. He was still panting on the drive home and seemed lethargic, so I called his veterinarian, who said to take him to the emergency vet immediately. There, he was diagnosed with heatstroke! They treated him and he’s doing much better, but I was shocked at how quickly Alfie developed a heat injury from being outside. Please warn your readers that dogs are very vulnerable to summer heat. -Chris in Portland, Oregon DEAR CHRIS: You are so right! I’m glad Alfie is doing well and that tragedy was averted by your instinct to contact the vet. Just like humans, dogs need to acclimate to their environment. Sudden weather extremes like excessive heat or freezing cold are very difficult to adjust to. Dogs have far fewer sweat glands than humans; they manage their body temperature in other ways, such as panting when it’s hot. So if we’re feeling the heat, dogs are feeling it even more! It’s important to watch for signs of heat injury, especially when outdoors. Excessive panting is a key sign, as is lethargy and excessive drooling. Other symptoms include reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination and collapse. Immediate treatment is needed to prevent serious injury or death. Keep plenty of cool water on hand for your dog to drink, both indoors and out. Never leave them in the car, even for a minute. At home, keep the air moving with fans, and cool down the environment with an air conditioner. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Avoid caffeine in the late afternoon. Some professionals rely on caffeinated beverages such as coffee or energy drinks to combat afternoon drowsiness. While that afternoon caffeine fix might provide an immediate, if temporary, jolt of energy, it might also affect a person’s energy levels the following day. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that caffeine consumed as early as six hours before bedtime can significantly disrupt sleep. Professionals who reach for a cup of coffee in the late afternoon might get a sudden boost of energy, but their energy levels the following day might be lower due to a poor night’s sleep. The free booklet also contains helpful information about achieving monetary compensation for asbestos injuries, which hinges upon a timely filing of the claim and the ability to identify the specific asbestos products you used. People with multiple hobbies recognize there are many great ways to spend one’s time. But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * James Barry, the Inspector General of the British Army in 1858 during a period when women were not respected in the medical field, had a highly successful career in surgery for more than 50 years. During an autopsy after Barry’s death, he was discovered to be a woman in disguise. To avoid embarrassment, the war department and medical association arranged for the doctor to be interred as a man.
