Aug. 30, 1963, a “hot line” between Moscow and Washington goes into effect to speed communication between U.S. and the Soviet Union and help prevent the possibility of an accidental war. Although never used, it did provide a useful prop for movies about nuclear disaster, such as “Fail Safe” and “Dr. Strangelove.”

Makes about 45 50 thin square eggless wonton wrappers (around 4 inches in size)
Vegetable oil, for frying
Filling:
5 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and finely chopped
1 tablespoon roasted sesame oil
1 pound, 2 ounces cooked, shredded beef short ribs
11 ounces cabbage kimchi, drained and finely chopped
3 1/2 ounces spring onions, finely chopped
3 ounces pickled jalapeños, finely chopped
1 pound, 2 ounces mature cheddar cheese, grated
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
To serve:
Silgochu (dried chilli threads)
1 spring onion, julienned and soaked in ice water until curled, then drained Sriracha
For the filling, first sauté the mushrooms in the sesame oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-low heat until just softened. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a large bowl, combine the rest of the filling ingredients with the mushrooms. Mix together using your hands, really breaking up the short rib meat to make a uniform texture.
For the dumplings, line a couple of baking sheets with parchment and set aside. Fill a small bowl with water. Unwrap the wonton wrappers and cover lightly with a piece of clingfilm to keep them moist. Lay a wrapper on a clean work surface and put 1 ounce of the meat filling in the center. Dip a forefinger into the water and run it along the edges of the wrapper to moisten the surface. Now bring the open edges to the center, and pinch where the edges meet each other, creating four seams in a cross shape. Set aside and cover with clingfilm or a damp tea towel while you shape the rest. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling, making sure the dumplings are not touching on the baking sheets.
To a medium saucepan, add the vegetable oil and heat to 340 F (170 C). Working in batches, place the dumplings on their sides in the pan in a single layer without crowding. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown. Transfer the fried dumplings to a wire rack or kitchen paper-lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining dumplings. If you don’t plan on cooking them straight away, you can freeze them on the baking sheets, then bag them up and store in the freezer.
Top with some of the silgochu and curly spring onion and serve immediately with the sriracha.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE
Add a pop of color with planters. Awe-inspiring colors can make a landscape stand out from surrounding properties. Flowers, bushes and plants may be the first thing homeowners consider when trying to add color to their lawns, but planters can provide a more immediate way to give exterior grounds some color. Bold planters won’t lose their color in a matter of weeks like many flowers do, and homeowners can switch planters so the colors align with the season. For example, some pastel planters can evoke the spirit of spring, while orange planters can be filled with mums to give a landscape an autumnal feel.
SEALING
WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER
Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs.
Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.
USE LESS ENERGY
Put that backyard grill to good use. Plan meals around outdoor cooking so the ambient heat will stay outside and you will not have to turn on the oven or the stovetop. Include side dishes, such as salads, fresh vegetables and fruits or gazpacho, that can be served cold. If you must heat something indoors, try doing so in the microwave.

Keeping vehicles looking pristine requires care and diligent cleaning. So many day-to-day activities and environmental materials have the potential to damage the finish on cars and trucks. While winter weather and chemicals used to keep roadways passable are often blamed for affecting the appearance of cars and trucks, winter is not the only time of year when substances can cause damage to vehicles.
Spring and summer are prime seasons for sap, birds and insects. These times of year tend to see an uptick in road work as well, and such projects can contribute to damage caused by loose asphalt, gravel and tar. Addressing problems resulting from tree sap, insect and bird droppings and tar may not be something to look forward to, but it is necessary to keep cars looking pristine.
Prevent bugs, sap and other substances from ruining a vehicle Tar
Soap and water will do little to remove tar and other petroleum-based products from vehicles. Commercial tar removal products use a strong solvent or detergent to loosen the tar. This may include kerosene, mineral spirits or another item mixed with lubricants. Go slowly and use caution so that you remove the tar and not the paint.
Q&A Master Gardeners with the
Why are you supposed to take off the “suckers” on tomato plants if they still produce fruit?
You do not need to take the suckers off but if you do not, you will end up with a lot of branches and probably a lot of small tomatoes if you are lucky.. The added branches will shade other parts of the plant and encourage mold and bacteria to grow since rainwater would not evaporate off the leaves as quickly compared to one that you prune. The extra branches also take up energy that could be used in producing larger fruit. So, depending on what you want from
your tomatoes, pruning off branches might be something you will want to do.
You could try an experiment in your garden to see for yourself what happens with and without pruning. Just a side, at the beginning, if you root some of the suckers, you could get a few more plants that will produce tomatoes for you before frost kills them.

Most Common Cause Behind Teary Eyes Are Dry Eyes
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 74-year-old woman who loves to read the newspaper every morning. I have a problem that’s not serious, just annoying. My eyes tear up frequently while I read, causing me to wipe them. After I’m done reading, the problem stops. I see my ophthalmologist every year and have my vision glasses updated as needed. I am not yet a candidate for cataract surgery. Could you enlighten me about a probable cause for this irritating problem? -- A.H.G.
ANSWER: By all means, ask your ophthalmologist at your next visit, but the most common cause I see for watery, tearing eyes are ... dry eyes! This apparent paradox is caused by the fact that your eyes have three different fluids.
One of them, called meibum, is a long-lasting, oily material secreted by the meibomian glands, found around the edges of the eyelids near the eyelashes. This covers the eye and prevents fluid from evaporating quickly. Without this fluid, the lacrimal gland (near the temple above each eye) then has to make a lot of its watery secretions, which cause symptoms of tearing. Most commonly, the meibomian glands get clogged up by secretions becoming dry. Gently cleansing the eyelash area with warm water and baby shampoo helps many people unclog these glands. Artificial tears lubricate the eye and will reduce the symptoms of watery eyes (and maybe some eye irritation, too, which you might not have mentioned).
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Great Job!
A big thanks to our the Village of Geneseo workers who pick up our lawn bags and tree branches so regularly. They are always neat and careful to get all of the trimmings that we leave by the curb. We appreciate your service.
Best Win Ever!
This past weekend I was at Batavia Downs Gaming, hoping to win some money, yet gained much more in the end! I absent mindedly set my wallet on the stool next to me and eventually Ieft the casino, only to realize I did not have my wallet. A HUGE SHOUT OUT to the great samaritan that turned my wallet in to lost and found, and to Batavia Downs staff, Mary, Maya, and Maggie! When I realized I left it, I called and left a message, Mary tried to call me back three times. When we finally connected, Mary and Maya kindly told me it was locked in the safe. The next morning I went to pick it up, and Mary directed me to Lost & Found where I met Maggie, who pleasantly helped me retrieve my wallet, with some great conversation too! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH, my mishap truly turned out to be a blessing in disguise & the best win ever -
Strolling Downtown
Due to COVID, restaurants understandably added outside sidewalk seating. Our village downtown restaurants have done so, and we have enjoyed their service. Unfortunately, some of the tables are too large and have seating that spills out almost to the curb. Pedestrians should not be forced to step down into the street and around parked cars to get past those seated at tables. This is especially difficult for parents pushing strollers, wheelchair users and senior citizens. Restaurant managers, please use smaller tables or push them up against the building, limiting the number of chairs at the tables. This would provide a wider path for pedestrian use.
Keep it in your car
People! Stop throwing trash out of your car! The amount of garbage in the roads, on the side of highways, and in the grass is pure disrespect and laziness. If you’re picking up fast food, the paper bag and your wrappers do not belong in the road. Your plastic cup that had your soda in it from the convenient store does not belong in the road. Have some respect for the environment. The animals do not deserve to have their habitats polluted because you don’t want the trash in your car. YOUR GARBAGE=YOUR PROBLEM. We should be able to drive around and see the beauty in Rochester, not all the garbage that needs to get picked up. Show some respect. It’s not other people’s job to clean up after your mess. Wait until you get home to throw it out properly. In YOUR own trash can.

WEIGHING IN ON EXERCISE VS. DIETING FOR BETTER WEIGHT LOSS RESULTS
Statistics indicate more and more men, women and children are overweight or obese. The National Institutes of Health state that more than 35 percent of adults in the United States are obese and more than 34 percent are overweight, while 17 percent of children and adolescents in the United States are obese. Obesity rates are three times as high among today’s children than they were among youngsters just one generation ago.
As individuals attempt to lose weight, they may wonder what is the most effective way to accomplish that objective. Some argue that the secret to weight loss is lots of exercise, while others insist that calorie control is the key. When it comes to slimming down, some may be surprised by what the experts have to say.
The Mayo Clinic advises that cutting calories through dietary changes appears to promote weight loss more effectively than physical exercise alone. According to Shawn M. Talbott, Ph.D., a nutritional biochemist and former director of the University of Utah Nutrition Clinic, weight loss is about 75 percent diet and 25 percent exercise. People generally see the largest short-term results when they eat healthy foods and healthy portions.
Poor diets can be difficult to overcome, as it takes a lot of exercise to spur dramatic weight loss, whereas a low-calorie, healthy diet can be a simple and effective means to losing weight. Nutritionists often point to a balanced diet that focuses on fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole-grain carbohydrates over fad diets or ones that require the adherence to strict guidelines that are difficult to follow for lengthy periods of time.
But exercise should not be abandoned in favor of a low-calorie diet. Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, who runs one of the largest obesity clinics in Canada, says that weight loss occurs from what’s created in the kitchen, but health is gained in the gym. Dr. Freedhoff often advises his clients to make smart changes to the foods they eat to spur weight loss, and then incorporate exercise into their lifestyles as a way to keep the body in top form. Regular physical exercise is necessary to maintain strong bones, build muscle, improve flexibility, and keep the cardiovascular system working efficiently. Exercise also releases endorphins, which can improve mental alertness and feelings of well-being.
The Mayo Clinic notes that studies have shown that people who lose weight and keep it off over the long haul are those who get regular physical activity.
When it comes to losing weight, the foods a person eats play a bigger role than exercise. But it is the combination of both diet and exercise that can lead to greater overall health and sustained weight loss.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS
Roller coasters are a staple of amusement parks, and even though the first patent for a roller coaster was issued to LaMarcus Thompson in 1885, it’s believed modern roller coasters descended from winter sled rides made popular in the 17th century in St. Petersburg, Russia. Called “Russian Mountains,” these thrill rides took place on icy hills that may have reached as high as 200 feet in the air.

College is the first taste of true independence many young students experience. Whereas mom and dad were always around to make sure kids were out the door on time and homework was done, that safety blanket is no longer there once kids move into their dorm rooms.
The transition from high school to college can be both exciting and difficult. But parents can get a head start on that transition by encouraging their youngsters to be more independent during their final year of high school.

DID YOU KNOW?
DatafromtheUnitedStatesDepartment of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

PAW’S CORNER
Dog’s Food Guarding Aggression Is Getting Worse
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted an energetic, bouncy little Terrier mix a few months ago from a friend who had found him abandoned and wandering near his farm. Eddie is around 1 year old, and according to the vet he was likely abused or in a puppy mill situation. He’s now caught up on his shots, neutered, has put on weight and is pretty happy. However, he is an absolute terror if anyone, including me, approaches him while he’s eating. He snarls and snaps. And he’s gotten worse. He even nipped my hand once, and ran o in fear when I yelled. How can I stop this behavior? -- Jack H. in Newton, Massachusetts
DEAR JACK: Resource guarding is certainly an undesirable behavior, and it is sadly a common one in dogs coming from stressful, overpopulated or abusive situations. Because Eddie is really aggressive, even toward you, consider contacting a professional trainer and working with the vet to develop a long-term solution. Training along with a prescribed anti-anxiety medicine can work wonders, but it will take time.

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED
• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.
• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go.
• Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery.
• Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized.
• Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates.
• Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.
• Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion.
• Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.
In the short term, you’ll need to make sure Eddie won’t bite you or anyone else. Feed him in a location away from foot tra c and other pets. If you use a kennel cage, you can feed him in the cage. Feed him at consistent times each day. Don’t let anyone else attempt to feed him, even with treats.
e ASPCA has a helpful article with training exercises to start helping Eddie relax when you’re near him during feeding time. Find it here: www.aspca.org/ pet-care/dog-care/common-dog-behavior-issues/food-guarding
However, they also recommend working with a trainer. Resolving a resource guarding behavior can be tricky, but the long-term bene t is a happy, healthy companion.

Kicking Hunger in Rush-Henrietta: Food Pantry Serves Community Thanks to Community Partners and Donations
BY SUZIE WELLS
As summer ends and families prepare for the upcoming school year, the importance of food pantries becomes even more pronounced. For many households, the transition from summer vacation to school routines can cause additional nancial strain. e costs of school supplies, clothing, and other related expenses can stretch already limited budgets, making it challenging for families to provide an adequate and consistent supply of nutritious meals.
Food pantries during this period serve as a critical resource to ensure that children and their families have access to the sustenance they need to thrive academically and emotionally. By o ering a variety of food options, including nutritious snacks and meals that children can take to school, these pantries play a role in promoting equitable educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their economic circumstances. Food pantries’ support re ects a community’s commitment to upli its members and foster an environment of compassion and solidarity.
In November 2020, the Rush-Henrietta School District unveiled the Kicking Hunger School Food Pantry initiative in conjunction with the Town of Henrietta, RHEA, RH Rotary, RHAA, FISH/RHAFT, Foodlink, and the Kicking Hunger 5k. is pantry helps address individuals’ and families’ food insecurity within district borders, and helps families meet nutritional needs. In this way, the Food Pantry helps contribute to a stronger and more resilient community, in which each individual has the chance to succeed and ourish.
Evolving beyond the backpack program of years past, in which students took home extra food for their families over breaks and summers, the Kicking Hunger School Food Pantry now serves residents with and without school-aged students from their facility within the Good Shepherd building on East Henrietta Rd. ey provide dry foods,
the community for donations during October’s Make a Di erence Day each year, as well as area churches who run donation drives especially around the winter holidays. Coddington says one school runs a Souper Bowl Drive for canned soups and other goods each winter. To sweeten the pot, area organizations make birthday bags of cake mix, frosting, candles, a game, and a decoration to help Food Pantry families celebrate the special days.
Coddington says a few families bring extra food each week a er their weekly grocery shopping trips. All these donations immediately go toward families and individuals, and Coddington says, “Every little bit helps.”
To receive food, visitors must be Rush-Henrietta district residents and ll out an attestation form saying they qualify by receiving other services (SNAP, SSI, Medicaid, etc.) or maintaining a family income less than a certain threshold depending on family size. When visitors come the rst time, volunteers walk them through the process and then bring
Coddington says the pantry is currently well-stocked with school supplies, ready for the new school year, but they welcome donations year-round. Please visit their website at www.rhnet.org/foodpantry for a donation list of needs. At this printing, that includes: rice, tomatoes, hearty soups, canned chicken/tuna, beans, peanut butter, preserves, mac & cheese, pasta, juice, canned fruit and veggies, applesauce, cold cereal, oatmeal, snack bars, and crackers.
Coddington says the food pantry uses its monetary donations toward food but gives away personal care and cleaning products to families whenever they have donations, so they always seek: deodorant, shampoo, diapers, wipes, toilet paper, toothpaste, bar soap, feminine products, laundry detergent, pods, dish soap, and paper towels.
Coddington says the food pantry’s goal is simple: “Feed as many hungry people in the R-H community as possible.” She explains that food pantries across the region are short on supplies, so if you have the means and would like to donate what you can, they appreciate it. Let’s work together to help Kick Hunger.
Coddington says the pantry is a Foodlink partner, receiving free, reduced cost, or full-price food to stock the pantry’s shelves. ey also rely upon donation drives from community organizations such as the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts in the district, a wide variety of high school clubs, and the RH Rotary, all of whom regularly coordinate donation drives. e volunteers and coordinators of the pantry thank

WHAT IS A WILL?
The online financial resource Investopedia notes that wills are legally enforceable documents that dictate how people want their affairs handled and assets allocated in the wake of their deaths.
Wills should include a host of information, including who a person wants to assume guardianship of their minor-aged children should they pass away. This is especially important information to include in a will, as surviving relatives may have to go to court to contest guardianship if parents do not dictate who they want to serve as guardians in their wills.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN
Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS
Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school.
Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift.
A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY
Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished.
Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity.
Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once.
Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed.
Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week.
Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too.
Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks.
Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.
