Purslane is a vigorous weed that can be difficult to kill. Since it is close to your vegetables, you could carefully apply a weed killing product using a paint brush. Read the product label to make sure it is effective with this plant and follow all label instructions for your personal safety. A product that contains glyphosate will be absorbed into the roots and probably most effective, though repeated applications may be needed. If this weed is still growing after you have harvested your vegetables, you could use a tarp to cover the area and smother them where they are growing over the winter. - Julie Brocklehurst-Woods, Master GardenerVolunteer Should I prune my sour cherry tree in the spring orinthefall? The short answer is prune your sour cherry in the spring. For most fruit trees, spring (before the buds open into flowers and leaves) is the best time to prune unwanted limbs and branches.Growth and healing of live wood cuts begin right away and limit exposure of open wounds to insects and disease. One exception to that rule is sweet cherries. Since they are more susceptible to fungal and bacterial diseases, they should be pruned in late summer to minimize exposure.

Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

When working with chemicals and other products that have strong odors and/or emit particulates into the air, make sure you do so in well-ventilated areas. This will help dissipate the smell and prevent inhalation of concentrated chemical substances. Masks guard against dust, pollen and some other microscopic particles and may not provide enough protection, depending on the job. The Home Depot suggests using particulate or filtration respirators when performing tasks, such as sanding, where you might be exposed to particles. Gas and vapor respirators offer protection against additional substances.
Salvage: Removing debris and items that will no longer be needed once the renovation is complete is another way homeowners can pitch in. Homeowners remodeling their kitchens may be replacing their existing stoves and refrigerators and hoping to donate these items. In such instances, driving the items to the donation site or arranging for them to be picked up rather than taken off the premises by the contractor or his employees can cut labor costs, as it allows laborers to keep working toward the end goal rather than requiring them to leave the work site to drop unwanted items off.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Stripe smut The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought. 585.202.6794 ALL MAJOR EXCAVATION&GRADING LAKEVIEWCONSTRUCTION.NET Take advantage of placing wood orders before the fuel prices increase. • Additions • Decks • Windows • Garages • Siding • Pole Barns • Septic System Installation & Repair • Land Clearing • Site Development SEASONED FIREWOOD • Log Loads Available • We Buy Standing Timber 585.721.3770 WeDeliver&LargeQuantitiesAvailable • Asphalt paving and resurfacing • New driveway/parking lot construction • Reworking/re-grading stone driveways • Commercial/Residential (585) 303-9020 Fully Insured Free Estimates ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY

POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE
Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. The National Alliance for Youth Sports, Inc., reports that sponsorship costs vary from organization to organization, though they may cost as little as $100 to around $5,000 for the season. In return for that investment, businesses gain exposure to athletes, athletes’ families and friends, volunteers, and countless others who may see players in uniform on game day. ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.

It is important to look for clinics like the Lexus “Introduction to Golf” events that start simple and focus on basics like putting and chipping. The Use of Bactrim TreatmentResistanceCreatesin
DEAR DR. ROACH: As a 90-year-old man in mostly good health, I have been taking one Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) pill per day for several years now, preventatively for recurrent urinary tract infections. I am very pleased with this successful treatment. However, my urologist has mentioned that I might have to relinquish the Bactrim at some point without a full explanation of why. Is there any danger in the habitual use of Bactrim? -J.M.

The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs.

ANSWER: Both men and women who get recurrent urinary infections are sometimes treated with prophylactic antibiotics, such as the sulfa-based antibiotic you are taking. The main risk is not toxicity of the medicine, it is that you might acquire a bacterial strain that is resistant to the antibiotic treatment. You are fortunate that you have gone several years without this developing, and you may go many more successfully, but other people periodically need to change the antibiotic they are Prophylactictaking.
antibiotics are not the first-line treatment to prevent recurrent infection.

Bowling Thanks
A huge Thank You to the person who found my purse at the Webster Goodwill store and turned it in to a cashier on Sunday, August 14th. I was panicked, and you saved the day. Bless you for your good deed and honesty. Our world needs more folks like you!
Trash Thrown in Hayfield Today at 5:30 AM, I saw a vehicle stop so that the driver could toss a pile of filthy trash into our hayfield on (local road, local town), of mostly cigarette packs, many receipts identified with their debit card number, and a quantity of hard seltzer cans. I just picked it all up; metal fragments, in particular, can kill animals ingesting the baled hay. Be aware that your vehicle’s lights illuminated you! Fair warning: Next time, you will be reported to the sheriff’s office, because we become weary of picking up after pigs. The numerous convenience stores from which your garbage originated all have trash cans!
Riga Recreation's annual Summer Camp was a smashing success these past seven weeks! This summer experience for our youngsters could not have taken place if not for the following individuals/organizations: Camp Director Dave Childs, along with his counselor staff that included counselor Gladys, the Churchville Elementary School custodial staff, the CCCSD Continuing Ed. Dept., Bauer Karate, CCMS Gardening, Rose Garden Bowling, The Magic Guy, Air Affair Bounce House, Arlene's Air Brush Tattoos, and Pizza 151 for making this summer a special one! - David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you!
Private Property, Indeed! I’m responding to the rant regarding the person troubled by a family posing their children for a photo in front of their farmland. “Personal boundaries” have become quite ridiculous in our country. Unless it’s a public park or state land, every piece of land is off limits and usually filled with those all-too-familiar posted signs. When my family traveled to Scotland a few years back, I quickly noticed the utter lack of those nasty posted signs. When I inquired with the host of the place we stayed at about the absence of Keep Out signs, we were told that there was a mutual respect of property there and that people were free to hike or roam on any piece of open land. I took her up on that and enjoyed that great freedom while feeling uneasy as it was so unusual to me. How nice it would be to have that same attitude here! I know there are those that abuse the privilege, but a true form of “common decency” allowing such a harmless act would remind us that America IS the land of the free.
A huge thank you to Tom from the Rose Garden Bowl in Bergen for donating 20 used bowling pins for a NEW recreation program called FOWLING. This is a brand new game which combines "FO" (football) and "OWLING" (bowling). Without Tom's generous donation, we could not have made this possible! - David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Pet Peeves Store bought flowers now having color but no fragrance. I miss florists and markets selling fragrant flowers. - In a parking lot, my vehicle was hit by a driver pulling into the parking space in front of my car. Calling out to that driver, that person looked and simply responded, “Oh, it is just a little bit!” - Are we entering a new normal of really high heat and humidity summers? - It makes no sense that Medicare does not cover an emergency services home visit.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda Charles Exercise at the Rec Center
e senior center commandeered a large space at the rec center to use in an experiment. eir goal: to determine if we actually meant what we said about not coming in for exercise classes in a cramped senior center space where we’re all breathing on one another. Find more room, we’d said, room to spread out. Hence, the borrowed space at the rec center (which had to cancel the Tots and Mommy Workout Hour ... something about a stay-at-home father objecting to the name of the class). e rec center space was nicely decorated with blue painter’s tape X spots across the oor, 10 feet apart. en before we started, we got a little talk. “How many of you haven’t taken an exercise class in two years?” asked the too-young male exercise coach we’d never met before. Hands went up. ere was a knowing nod from the coach and the admonishment: “We’ll be taking this nice and easy. Do not push yourselves. If you need to stop and rest, then do that. Nobody will judge you.” He cast a erce look around the room as he said that. e routine the coach put us through was a perfect combination of nearly everything, starting with mild stretching, moving into a few minutes of yoga poses, some cha-cha steps, a few ballet moves, leg li s, toe touches andDuringmore.our cool down (although we hadn’t actually worked up a sweat) the coach inquired: “How many want to do this again? Twice a week, same time.”Hands went up, because, yes, we wanted more of this. We each took a handout at the door as we le , instructions for doing these exercises at home in case we didn’t like the rec center setup. But I have a feeling we’re all going to show up next week. It’s the rst bit of normal in two years. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc. This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. • Avoid the sudden jolt of a much earlier wake up. Set earlier times incrementally leading up to the rst day of school, dialing back both the bedtime and the wake-up time 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or even an hour earlier every 5-7 days, as necessary until you reach your desired school schedule bedtime and wake up time. A full 8+ hours of sleep improves health and focus.

• Children are o en aware of—and worried about—more than we think. Ask your child about any questions or concerns they have about back-to-school.

Prep like a Pro:
• We love it: Have your child leave his or her backpack out the night before the rst day of school so the “backpack fairy” can leave a fun surprise (like a cool new backpack decoration) by morning!
etting your child ready for the rst day of school hasn’t felt quite the same since the pandemic, but for the rst time in nearly three years, children are returning to the classroom with some semblance of what could be considered pre-pandemic normalcy. Need a little help getting back into the swing of things? Try our refreshed and updated tips for rst day success to help you hopefully stay healthy—all year long!

Ready Backpacks & Paperwork:
• Fill out all forms, i.e., immunization forms, permission slips by the week preceding the start of school. Find out what your school’s most updated policies are regarding vaccinations, masks, distancing, Covid testing, etc.
• Keep a planner with a separate folder for each child’s paperwork.

If you can pull it out easily, it’s likely that your seal is loose. Clean or replace door gaskets for a better *seal.Tokeep vinyl seats bearable in summer heat, keep a few towels in your car and lay them over the seat. This also keeps the plastic parts of baby seats from burning little legs and arms.
“Out of prewash and looking at a nasty grease stain? Grab your dishwashing liquid soap (not the one you would put in your automatic dishwasher). It’s designed to break down grease, and I just dab it on, scrub a bit, then let it set for about a quarter hour. After that, I launder in hot water. It’s usually successful.”

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

HARNESSING RESEARCH DISCOVERIES
“The unprecedented progress we are making against cancer has been made possible largely through basic research,” said Elizabeth M. Jaffee, M.D., president of the AACR and deputy director of The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
BESTSATELLITETV
Among the key advances outlined in the report are:
“A continued increase in federal funding for both basic and clinical research will allow us to make major headway moving forward.”
The full report, and all seven prior editions, are freely available at http:// cancerprogressreport.org.
• Decline in cigarette smoking rate among U.S. adults to its lowest— 14 percent—since the mid-1960s, thanks to public education and policy initiatives.
FOR PATIENT BENEFIT
• Decline in cancer death rate by 26 percent for U.S. adults, a reduction that translates into almost 2.4 million cancer deaths avoided, according to the latest data.
(NAPSI)—There’s encouraging news for people facing—or who may one day face—a cancer diagnosis: A new annual report highlights how federally funded research discoveries are fueling the development of new and even more effective ways to prevent, detect, diagnose and treat Ascancer.highlighted in the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Cancer Progress Report, one area of cancer treatment in which we are making extraordinary progress is immunotherapy. In the past decade, the number of immunotherapeutics has increased almost fivefold and the number of types of cancer that can be treated by at least one immunotherapeutic has more than tripled.
The report also highlights research areas where there are significant gaps in our knowledge, such as the underlying causes of cancer health disparities, and the need for all sectors of the biomedical research community to come together to address this critical issue. Notably, the report illustrates how unwavering, bipartisan support from Congress, in the form of increased funding for the NIH, NCI, FDA and CDC, is vital if we are to keep the momentum at which we make lifesaving progress for everyone.
• Twenty-two treatments for cancer newly approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or approved for new types of cancer between Aug. 1, 2017, and July 31, 2018.
