(585) 624-2301 • www.corbyscollisionhfl.com ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced. AUTOMOTIVE

DID YOU KNOW? Traffic can be bad for your health and also bad for your car. According to a University of Surrey study published in Science Daily, pollution levels inside of cars were found to be 40 percent higher while sitting in traffic jams or at red lights compared to levels in free-flowing traffic. The World Health Organization considers interior car pollution one of the top 10 health risks faced by humans. Health implications are not the only hazard posed by traffic jams. Stop-and-go traffic also takes its toll on vehicles. When idling, engine ventilation systems are at their weakest, warns Road and Travel. As a result, acidic combustion products and incompletely burned fuel in the engine can start to form engine deposits. Over time, such deposits may clog fuel injectors and interfere with the flow of fuel to the combustion chamber. Traffic can age vehicle engines and their braking systems. Using brake fluid and oils for extreme driving conditions may help prevent some damage. Avoiding rush hour is another way to improve personal health and safeguard the condition of the vehicle.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Leave work behind. The United States is one of the few countries that does not guarantee paid days off. The Center for Economic and Policy Research says one in four working Americans do not get paid time off. The employment site Glassdoor notes that among those who do get paid vacations, 75 percent of employees chose not to use all of their time in 2013. By comparison, Canadians get an average of 19 days of vacation time per year. Stress about making up work or falling behind makes some professionals worry about using their vacation time, and those who do travel may stay connected to the office in some shape or form. Splitting time between leisure and work responsibilities on a vacation can be taxing and take away from the time you need to relax and recharge. Cut work ties and immerse yourself in the vacation experience.

S E V RA Lovely cemetery A big Thank You goes out to whomever lovingly cares for the Union Hill Cemetery. The monuments are trimmed around and the grounds are mowed regularly. There are no tall weeds to wade through when visiting deceased friends and family. Your efforts are very much appreciated and deserve recognition!

Updated commandment Thou shalt not steal, whilst thou hath not to giveth back. Common courtesy We’re in obvious unchartered waters these days, but for those of you who bother to apply to the many open positions and agree to an in-person interview, not show up without so much as a phone call for explanation is beyond bad manners. Please have the common courtesy and decency to at least call and say you’ve decided not to waste the would-be employer’s valuable time!

Thanks to so many! On Sunday, August 8th, I was involved in a rollover accident on 5&20 at Bragg Street. Thanks to so many that stopped to assist: Harley rider Bill and his girlfriend; Nurse Meredith and her son; EMT Mary and others that I didn’t get their names. Your help was greatly appreciated and has renewed my faith that people are kind and good. I owe you all a beer! - Sharon K.

A new stadium As I looked at the rendering of the new multi-billion dollar stadium, I found it hard to see any difference from the present stadium. A field, seats, luxury boxes, etc., are pretty much what we already have and have paid for. They’re even going to build the new stadium in [local town] where the team has been for years. I’m a fan, just not a fan of this new stadium when the old one is just fine.

Living with Atrial Fibrillation? TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Reader Seeks Alternative to Rx Antidepressant ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffer from depression. It comes and goes, but I’ve been feeling sad, worried and angry, as well as irritable, for the past four months or so. I force myself to function. My family doctor prescribed a 37.5 mg dose of Effexor once a day to start and after one week, twice a day. I looked up the side effects and what I read scared me. Instead, I’ve been taking 1,000 mg of St. John’s wort daily for almost three weeks, and I have noticed no discernible effect. I told my doctor I would take the Effexor after three weeks if the St. John’s wort hasn’t helped. Should I take his advice? Are there better alternatives? I am middle age and take zero prescription drugs. -- S.M. ANSWER: St. John’s wort, Hypericum perforatum, is a yellow flower that has been medicinally used for centuries. Initial studies suggested benefit in people with mild to moderate depression, and several substances in the flower have been shown to have pharmacologic effects on serotonin receptors, among other effects. However, other trials have shown it to be no better than placebo. It does have important drug interactions, fortunately not an issue for you (as long as you let the St. John’s wort wear off before starting Effexor), but for some people the potential interactions are dangerous. Side effects are not common, but include gastrointestinal upset, dizziness and confusion, fatigue, dry mouth and sexual side effects. It can make people more sensitive to sunlight, and may decrease fertility. The studies that did show a benefit lasted four to 12 weeks. It is possible you might not have had benefit from it yet, and waiting a little longer -- say another week -- wouldn’t be unreasonable to really give the St. John’s wort a chance. However, I seldom recommend this herb due to lack of consistent benefit in trials, the potential for drug interactions and a concern about poor regulation of supplements in terms of amount and purity of the ingredients. For people who want to avoid prescription medicine, I have often recommended S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe). The evidence is better and the side effects and drug interactions fewer. Effexor may be a good choice for you. Prescription antidepressants have been shown to be better than placebo, but they certainly do not work for everybody. If Effexor isn’t a good choice, there are several others. However, I would strongly recommend you consider nonpharmacologic treatment for depression whether or not you decide to take additional medication treatment. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury. Page 11

(585) 813-9758 • (585) 599-3563 www.reebfamilymoving.com HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE (NAPSI)—If your family is like most, there are a few things about your home that really annoy you. Fortunately, ingenious solutions are available for four of the most common pet peeves when it comes to lighting and electronics: 1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs. 2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection.

Do what we can, summer will have its flies. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights.

Fair Housing Statement

Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces. A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics. While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Do Cats, Goldfish Mix? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My daughter received a goldfish for her last birthday, and true to her word, she has kept the fish healthy and happy. Now, for her 9th birthday, she wants a kitten. I feel that she’s old enough to care for a cat, but am worried that the cat will stress her goldfish. What are your thoughts? -- Judy G., Seattle DEAR JUDY: As a parent, your instincts are important and this one is worth thinking about. Cats are fascinated with fish tanks and can often be found watching the fish inside with rapt attention -- if not actively trying to get a paw into the water. Discuss your concerns with your daughter. At age 9, she’s old enough to consider this problem as well. Is there a way for her goldfish to remain healthy and stress-free while bringing a kitten into your home? There are strategies for doing this successfully, including training that diverts a cat’s attention from the tank and placing the tank out of sight or reach of the cat. Caring for pets is a way to help children develop empathy for all living things. It can help them learn about responsibility, too -- but only when parents are actively involved in the process. You’re doing a great job of helping your daughter understand the importance of caring for pets of all kinds. Having second thoughts about bringing another pet into the house is exactly the kind of thinking parents should do. But you also have the opportunity to guide your daughter and have her be part of the decision as to whether a kitten is a good idea at this point, or whether she should wait another year. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER

Roof Leaks?

Stay hydrated. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is something gardeners must do to stay safe when gardening in summer. Water carries heat away from internal organs, helping to prevent heat stroke along the way. Water takes heat through the bloodstream to the skin, resulting in sweat. Gardeners who notice they are not sweating despite the heat should drink more water and even head indoors to cool down. In addition, the American Heart Association notes that keeping the body hydrated helps the heart pump blood more easily, making gardening less taxing on the heart on hot days.

Why does my maple tree have black spots on its leaves, and they are progresses. Small, black, tar-like raised dropping all over my yard? structures form on the upper surface It is called maple tree tar spot disease or within these yellow spots. The black spots Rhytismataceae. Coccomyces dentatus continue to grow in diameter and thickness is a species of fungus in the family to the point where it looks like someone Rhytismataceae. A widespread species, splashed tar on the leaves. Symptoms tend particularly in temperate areas, it colonizes to be more common on trees growing in the dead fallen leaves of vascular plants moist, sheltered locations. Impact: This and is commonly found on oaks, chestnut disease is usually a cosmetic problem and maples. Symptoms: Tar spot is one and does not affect the long-term health of the most readily visible and easiest of the tree. Heavy infections can cause maple diseases to diagnose. It’s also one premature leaf drop – a circumstance of the least damaging ailments on its that causes great consternation to host. The first tar spot symptoms usually homeowners because lawns are littered show up in early summer as small, light- and must be raked before autumn green to yellowish-green spots. The spots typically arrives. Management: Since tar enlarge and color intensifies as summer spot fungi overwinter in fallen leaves, the

most effective management technique is to rake and destroy leaves in the fall. This will reduce the number of overwintering “spots” that can infect new leaves the following spring. Neighbors should also rake and destroy infected leaves to be effective. Mulching leaves will destroy many of the spots before they mature, but the mulch pile should be covered or turned before new leaves begin to emerge in the spring. Applications of fungicides

are possible when high levels of infection become unacceptable, but control of tar spot is challenging, especially on mature maples. In addition, if others in a neighborhood setting are not managing the disease on their trees with fungicides or proper sanitation, the act of spraying may be a waste of time and money. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Biggest Raise in Decades for Social Security? Don’t count your money before it’s in hand, of course. But word is that the Social Security increase we see in January could be as much as 6.1%, the largest since 1983. For the average benefit recipient, currently receiving $1,543, that could amount to $94 per month. It’s a few years too late for a serious increase, but certainly better than the 1.3% bump we saw for 2021 and the 1.6% the year before. Social Security is calculated by the cost-of-living adjustment in the third quarter each year. For 2021, they calculated that a 1.3% increase should be plenty. We know that was wrong, as prices of everything had climbed. It’s all in how and what they calculate. They use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which measures prices on certain goods and services. But we’re not wage earners, and we don’t work in offices. We spend our money on different things. We wonder why they don’t use the index for the elderly (CPI-E), which takes into consideration the things we do buy, such as medical care, medical services, housing and health insurance. (There’s a bill in the House of Representatives -- H.R.4315 -- to do that very thing.) We spend less than the CPI-W group on transportation, food, clothing, entertainment, education and communication. The Federal Reserve Bank did a midsummer survey on what consumers are expecting for the rest of 2021. The expectation of responders is that we’ll see a 4.8% increase on top of what we’ve already seen this year. Keep an eye on the news in October, when the rate of next year’s Social Security increase is finalized. Meanwhile start planning for next year as soon as you can. It does the same thing, keeping the wood from splitting.” -- P.K. in New Jersey * To prevent garbage cans from filling with water during rainstorms, drill several holes in the bottom, near the sides. Rosita’s Way… A Sanctuary for Senior and Special Needs Chihuahuas BY SCOTT WURTZEL

T

here is a reason dogs are referred to as “man’s best friend.” They are loving and social animals that, if trained and well cared for, will always be by your side. Unfortunately, a lot of dogs end up being abused and/or abandoned by their owners, left with no place to go, but thatís where rescue shelters and sanctuaries come in. Bonnie Mason runs Rosita’s Way, a sanctuary for senior and special needs chihuahuas located in the Canadice/Hemlock area. After her chihuahua, Rosita, passed away, Bonnie started the sanctuary to rescue and care for other chihuahuas, making sure that they can live out their lives in peace. The sanctuary officially started in 2015.

One might wonder what a chihuahua sanctuary would be like. “Our tagline is Where love and acceptance heal,” Mason explains. “It’s a true sanctuary for senior and special needs chihuahuas to come and live their lives out, where they get proper medical care and love for whatever time they have. We do get some hospice cases, so sometimes it’s not too long. We are just the true meaning of the word sanctuary.” These dogs do face a lot of issues due to their breed. According to Mason, chihuahuas are the second most euthanized dog breed, right behind pit bulls. They are also the second most common dog breed found in shelters. “The biggest issue is that people use them as accessories,” Mason states. “Unfortunately, as we all know, when movies come out about different kinds of dogs, those dogs suffer because everyone then wants one. The biggest problem is more out west. California at one point was receiving chihuahuas in their shelters at a rate of 200 a day. Most of them the median age is 10, because once they become seniors, then it’s not so cute to carry them around anymore because they have their medical issues.” Also, due to the high demand, there is a lot of overbreeding, and this is the cause for an increase in chihuahuas with special needs.

Despite the many issues involved with these dogs, there are still ways for those who wish to help to get involved. To Mason, the best way to get involved is to volunteer at different rescues, even if they aren’t specifically for chihuahuas. “Volunteer for the things not everyone wants to do,” Mason explains. “A lot of fundraising happens at yard sales; I can’t for the life of me to get anyone to volunteer to help with a yard sale. It’s the harder things that everybody needs more help with, it’s the get-yourhands-dirty, do-some-work things.” Mason also says that there are plenty of people willing to come play with the dogs, and that helps, but “there needs to be hands-on in the other areas, too. There is a lot to what we do.” If you can’t find the time to help out with a handson approach, you can donate to one of many dog rescue charities. Mason says that you just need to do your research, and in terms of local charities, she has “worked handin-hand with Suzy Q Dog Rescue.” She worked with them to foster a dog, but the dog remains in their care. Mason has also worked with out-of-state organizations such as Long Way Home Adoptables out of Texas and Pink Heart Rescue in Indianapolis.

Old age and disabilities are the biggest reason why these chihuahuas have trouble finding homes. “The dogs we take in are deemed either unadoptable or difficult to adopt out,” Mason says. “We have only honestly had two unadoptable dogs, and they were unadoptable because they were liabilities. One was a bite risk to humans. You never knew what was going to set him off, and that’s a huge liability. You cannot adopt a dog out like that. The other one was super tiny but extremely dog aggressive and had gotten into fights in foster homes. She had basically worn out her welcome in the rescue she was in, so she came to us.” The dogs that are hard to adopt are usually ones with a lot of medical issues. Those types of dogs are ones that will sit in a small rescue for a long time.
