Friday, September 8th
Check out our website for more info!
Practice: Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “Emily Post’s Etiquette,18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table.Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time.
Parents also can acclimate their youngsters to dining out by gradually working their way up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place where table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant when kids can handle it.

Fine examples of today’s youths Saturday, August 19th there were 6 young women at Lehigh and East Henrietta Rd advertising a car wash at the Rush-Henrietta High School. They were energetic, polite and fun. I went to the high school and the rest of the group and the adult in charge were just as fun. As a resident of Henrietta I was so happy to see young people volunteering for the school. Thank you all. You put a big smile on a cranky old woman’s face. Thank you, you made my day.

Wedding Showers
The tradition of a wedding shower is to help a future bride acquire the necessary items needed to set up her new home. Today, more and more couples live together for years prior to getting married. What is the purpose of a wedding shower when most couples already have everything they need? As a guest, we are required to buy an expensive inconsequential item from the long list on the registry, and then spend an afternoon watching the gifts slowly get opened as if they have no idea what they are about to receive. Wouldn’t it make more sense to forgo the expensive shower expo and just go out and buy the gifts you preselected on the registry? Just food for thought.

INFLUENTIAL
& LANDSCAPING
POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Stripesmut
The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS
Curled, cracked or missing shingles may prove troublesome. Inclement weather can test the strength of even the most durable roofs. Even though many roofs are designed to last up to 30 years, some may need to be replaced early, particularly when they have been exposed to harsh weather over a period of years. Individual shingles can be replaced as spot treatments, but if the damage is widespread, a new roof may be necessary.

ROOFING
SIGNS A ROOF NEEDS REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT
Roof age: The age of the roof is a major factor in determining if it will need to be replaced or if repairs can be made to isolated damage. Individuals who live in neighborhoods where neighbors are now replacing roofs will likely find it is time to consult a roofing company. Homeowners also can check to see if they have any receipts that indicate the roof’s installation date so they have an idea about its age.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.
Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.
Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring
that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

TIPS FOR LABOR DAY GETAWAYS
Leave extra time - Roadways are bound to be busy with other Labor Day weekend travelers, particularly for those headed to seaside locales or campgrounds. One way to avoid some of the traffic is to depart from home in the wee hours of the morning or late at night. Leave plenty of time to get to your destination so you won’t be tempted to speed or drive erratically. Utilize GPS and mobile phone mapping apps to identify routes that can help you avoid traffic.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES
Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.
PAW’S CORNER
Stray Cats Take Out Local Chipmunk Population
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, a pack of cats have started wandering on my property, especially at dawn and dusk. Two of them are wearing flea collars, with no ID tag; the rest have no identification. I don’t approach or feed them. Some of them might be my neighbors’ cats, but I don’t know. Since they started prowling my three acres, the chipmunks and birds that used to frequent the yard have disappeared. How do I deal with this cat problem? -- Tracy in upstate New York
DEAR TRACY: Contact your local municipality -- city, town or county -- and visit their website to find out if they have an animal control officer. If they do, contact them and explain the problem.
Now, most rural areas have few to no animal control officers assigned. So you may be told that they only respond to calls where the animal poses a threat -- aggressive dogs, bears, rabid raccoons and so on. But reporting the cat pack is still important. Furthermore, ask them what resources exist in your area for dealing with stray cats. Here’s a few other tips:
-- Is there a TNR (trap, neuter, release) program active in the area? Contact them for advice.
-- Ask your nearby neighbors if any of the cats belong to them. If so, ask politely if they can keep the cats indoors.
-- Take a photo of the cat pack and post it on social media. Ask if any of the cats have been reported missing.
-- Contact local shelters for advice. ey probably won’t take in feral cats, but you can bring in friendly and approachable cats that don’t have identification. Purchase a cat carrier so you can safely transport them.

* Realizing that surgical antiseptics were marketable to just a small group of professionals, the makers of Listerine began to market the product as a floor cleaner -- as well as a cure for gonorrhea. While we won’t necessarily vouch for the latter, in a pinch, just add a capful for every gallon of water and mop away. Other uses include dandruff elimination, deodorant, a numbing agent for toothache pain and tick removal.

HOW TO STAY MENTALLY SHARP AFTER RETIREMENT
Enroll in an adult education course. A 2014 study published in the journal JAMA Neurology examined the association between lifetime intellectual enrichment and cognitive decline in the older population. The study’s authors found that higher levels of late-life cognitive activity were associated with higher levels of cognition. The study’s authors concluded that lifetime intellectual enrichment might delay the onset of cognitive impairment. Retirees can look into adult learning programs at local colleges and universities to see if anything piques their interest.

Osteoporosis Screening for Men Remains Controversial
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are confused about the guidelines concerning when older men should be screened for osteoporosis. All the information seems to suggest that it is only needed for men over 70 who have had a fracture. In my husband’s case, he was only told to get a DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan after he had back pain and several compression fractures of the thoracic spine (up to 70%), at the age of 72. His T-score was -2.8 for his spine. I can’t help feeling that because he is male, weighs 200 pounds, has an active lifestyle and was previously 6 feet, 2 inches tall, the issue of osteoporosis just never came up during his yearly primary care visits (even though his height had decreased since at least 2019, and he’s now only 6 feet tall). This is a potentially life-threatening condition for older women and men, but the risks for women seem to get all the attention. What’s the reluctance to order a simple, fast, painless, not-too-expensive test to screen men earlier? -- B.W.
ANSWER: In general, screening tests (by definition, a test done on a person with no symptoms of the condition) are done when there is good evidence that the screening will lead to an improved outcome in the screened group compared to an unscreened group. The data in women is strong enough that all women over 65 and women younger than 65 with additional risks for osteoporosis should be screened with a DEXA scan, but there is not strong enough data to support screening in men.
Osteoporosis screening in men is controversial. While one of the most influential groups does not recommend screening in all men over 70, some groups do, despite an absence of proven benefit. They base this recommendation on the fact that, as you say, it’s not a particularly dangerous test (the radiation dose is small), nor is it expensive (the average cost is $150, but can be higher in some states). One major downside of testing in general is that no screening test is perfect. As such, an unexpected finding of osteoporosis in a man requires that the screening test be repeated to be sure the test result is accurate.
Even though men are not always recommended for screening, there are some medical findings that should prompt a test. One is a loss of height -- losing more than 1.5 inches of height should have prompted a DEXA scan. (Strictly speaking, this is no longer a screening; it’s an evaluation of the cause of an unexpected medical finding.)
A low testosterone level (either by itself -- hypogonadism -- or as a result of medical treatment for prostate cancer); primary hyperparathyroidism; inflammatory bowel disease; and longterm use of prednisone and similar drugs are all known risk factors for osteoporosis that should at least trigger a discussion of a DEXA scan. Similarly, the finding of osteoporosis in a man should prompt consideration of the underlying reason behind it, which could include any of the risk factors listed above.

Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.

Salvatore’s Pizza Family Introduces Innovative “I LOVE SCHOOL” Program to Celebrate 45th Anniversary
In a heartfelt gesture to mark their 45th anniversary, Salvatore’s Pizza Family has unveiled the “I Love School” program. A beloved fixture in the community since its inception as a high school home economics project in 1978, Salvatore’s Pizza is taking this momentous occasion to give back to the community that has supported them throughout the years. e program aims to foster a spirit of appreciation for education and hard-working educators by providing classrooms and students with incentives that highlight positive behavior, acts of kindness, and academic excellence.
e “I Love School” program is a testament to the pizza chain’s commitment to community engagement and its dedication to making a positive impact on local education. Ashley Maria King, President of Business Operations, expressed the company’s enthusiasm, saying, “We are always looking for new ways to get involved in our community, and with it being back-to-school season, we were trying to find a way to help teachers the best we can.”
e heart of the program lies in classroom nominations, where teachers, parents, and even students can nominate deserving classrooms to be part of this initiative. Nominations continue until September 30th, with the aim of selecting classrooms from every school in Monroe and surrounding counties.
Classrooms selected will win Free SuperSlice Cards to be redeemed for delicious slices at any Salvatore’s Full Menu location. e excitement doesn’t end there; select classrooms will also receive Free Large Pizza Cards, facilitating a Back-To-School Pizza Party sure to add a dash of excitement to the new academic year.
King shares that the program’s goal is to “donate SuperSlice cards to at least one classroom for every single school in Monroe County and surrounding counties. We hope to do more than one classroom per school, but this is what we are going to initially aim for.”
Kayla Kent-Moreira, President of Restaurant Operations, spoke about the potential of these rewards, explaining, “Teachers can use Salvatore’s SuperSlice cards as a gi for students, or to use as class rewards for attendance, good grades, or acts of kindness.” is innovative approach brightens the classroom atmosphere and reinforces positive student behavior.
Salvatore’s Pizza is deeply rooted in the Rochester community, and this program reflects its commitment to making a difference. e company has a rich history of engaging with the community through various initiatives, such as supporting local charities, including the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, Camp Good Days & Special Times, and NEQALS EMT, and Rochester’s Do the Right ing initiative. Salvatore’s franchises sponsor a variety of community events and youth sports organizations. Salvatore’s is also known to buy out deserving Girl Scout troop cookie inventory to give away, and all locations offer free pizzas to veterans and active military personnel on Veterans Day. During COVID, Salvatore’s started a Feed Rochester campaign to donate pizzas to local hospitals and all first responder locations as well as nursing homes and homeless shelters.
“We are a local business, born & raised in Rochester, NY --and we do whatever we can to try to help our local community,” emphasizes CEO/Founder, Salvatore SoccerSam Fantauzzo. “We just want to put a smile on someone’s face and pizza in their hand.”
With the “I Love School” program, Salvatore’s Pizza Family reiterates its commitment to nurturing the potential of the next generation and fostering a sense of community that has been at the heart of their journey since the beginning. As nominations roll in and classrooms eagerly await the chance to participate, this initiative will leave an indelible mark on the educational landscape of Monroe and surrounding counties.
For more information about the “I Love School” program and to nominate deserving classrooms, please visit the official Salvatore’s Pizza website: www.salvatores.com/iloveschool.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE
To flip or not to flip: Flipping properties gained popularity in the second decade of this century, but figures from the property database curator ATTOM Data Solutions indicates that returns on investments in flipped properties declined for the third straight year in 2020. Though flipping can still yield a strong return, investors may not realize the returns on flipped properties that they might have realized as recently as five years ago. Potential investors should conduct some research regarding real estate market trends, including flipping data where available, to make the most informed decision possible.
HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE
Market: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favor.
SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME
Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxingsanctuary.
There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room.Insulatingproperlywillallow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort.
Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help controlfirebylimitingitsspread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity andpropagationofnoise.

DID YOU KNOW?
Howhouseholdsearntheirincome haschangeddramaticallyoverthe last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
* Take a good look at Disney princesses and you’ll notice that they’re all essentially attired in typical princess garb of gown, tiara, etc. But here’s a small difference you might not have picked up on -- some wear gloves, and some don’t. What’s up with that? The ladies without gloves are commoners who married into royalty.

EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF LABOR DAY
Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summertime fun and a day when thousands of people gather across the country for their final big barbecue blowouts. Labor Day has evolved into a holiday about relaxing with friends and family, and that has led to its origins getting somewhat lost in the celebratory shuffle.
Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day was established to highlight the achievements of American workers, both from a social and an economic perspective. Labor Day highlights one of the main benefits of being a citizen of the United States, the ability to have professional freedom and contribute to the prosperity and strength of the country through gainful employment. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894.
Celebrated annually on the first Monday of September, it is believed that Labor Day was first promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which also organized the first labor-related parade in New York City. Although the true fathers of Labor Day remain a topic of debate, some historians maintain that Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor put forward the first Labor Day proposal in May 1882 after witnessing a labor festival in Toronto, Canada.
Labor Day was largely celebrated in the past with parades, speeches and a day off of work for the country’s workers. Similar festivities occur to this day, with the gradual introduction of other events that mark the unofficial end of summer.
