MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL)
Serves 4
1 pound morcilla blood sausage
1 pound mushrooms, sliced
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 cloves garlic, slivered
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons white wine
1 cup shelled spring peas
1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint
2 tablespoons mint oil
Mint Oil
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 cup chopped mint
Pinch of salt
Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.
In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil.
For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

Cost: While cost should not be the only consideration when choosing a family vehicle, parents must determine their budget before beginning their search for a new ride. Aside from a home, cars are the most expensive purchase many people will ever make, which only highlights the importance parents must place on finding the right vehicles for their families.Luxury cars,SUVs and sports cars tend to be the most expensive vehicles on the market, and young parents just starting out or parents of school-aged kids with college educations to consider might find that less expensive vehicles make the most practical sense for their families. Parents also must determine if they are financing or leasing their vehicles or buying them outright. Financing and leasing often requires full insurance coverage, which can be pricey, while buying outright affords vehicle owners to choose the level of coverage they are most comfortable with. Determine insurance costs on a given model before driving off the lot with the pedal to the metal.

I have what looks like mold on the soil of a Christmas Cactus, with no indications on the leaves or stems. How should I treat it?
Assuming it is mold or fungus on the soil of the Christmas cactus, that usually indicates it is being watered too much so the soil remains moist, which allows mold to grow. It would help to see the mold to be sure. Contact your
local Cooperative Extension for analysis. An alternate possibility is that the area where the plant is located has high humidity which could also encourage a fungus or mold.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS
Roller coasters are a staple of amusement parks, and even though the first patent for a roller coaster was issued to LaMarcus Thompson in 1885, it’s believed modern roller coasters descended from winter sled rides made popular in the 17th century in St. Petersburg, Russia. Called “Russian Mountains,” these thrill rides took place on icy hills that may have reached as high as 200 feet in the air.
HOBBIES THAT SUIT A SUMMERTIME VIBE
Sailing/boating: Though it might involve a little more physical activity than reading, sailing and/or boating is an ideal summertime activity. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that nearly 40 percent of the United States population lives in a coastal area, making boating and sailing an accessible hobby for a significant percentage of Americans. Even those who live far away from the ocean undoubtedly live close to a river or lake. What better way to enjoy warm summer afternoons than on a boat?

HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL
A child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences. While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people.
Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be. The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive transition from elementary school.

On September 15, 2003, author and illustrator of children’s books, Peter H. Reynolds released his book “The Dot.” In the story, Vashti felt like she couldn’t draw — but her art teacher wouldn’t accept that. “Just make a mark, and see where it takes you,” the teacher said to Vashti. So, she marked her parchment paper with a small dot. The next day, Vashti was surprised to find her paper with the dot on the classroom wall.
Vashti was so proud of her work that she started creating drawings with different kinds of dots.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Marksmen: Tim Moore’s Reflection on Livonia’s Trap Shooting Club
BY SUZIE WELLS
In the heart of Livonia, where the echoes of camaraderie and the crack of gunfire meld, Tim Moore and Bob Warner mentor a new generation of marksmen with Livonia High School’s trap shooting club. eir mission? To instill not only the art of precise shooting, but a profound respect for safety, sportsmanship, and the great outdoors. Amidst the rolling terrain, young minds find sanctuary—a place where they learn to master the trigger safely.
Each year, the Livonia club draws in a substantial 30-40 student participants. During their seasons, the main shoot takes place on Sundays, where every student shoots five times at each of five stations over two rounds, scoring up to 50 points. Some students consistently achieve impressive scores of 10-12 per round, while others reach even higher with 23/24. A few students even earn an average of 48 or 49 each week, a feat Tim openly admires, acknowledging that even he can’t compete with such consistency. Annually, the Livonia club sends 14-17 skilled students to compete in States in Syracuse, followed by Nationals in Michigan.
Leading the Livonia Trap Shooting Club for several years now, Tim assumed this role when his daughter expressed an interest in the sport. His involvement extends to sportsmen’s clubs in Conesus, Hemlock, and Wayland, with special mention of his contributions to organizing BINGO games and other fundraisers that help cover expenses for youth attending DEC camp, essential support for a club that entails significant costs, with firearms costing between $500 to $1,500 each.
In 2019, when Tim first took the reins, 29 schools were involved statewide. Now, he notes that this number has tripled. Tim attributes this growth to a rising understanding that firearms can be used responsibly for both recreation and sustenance.
field’s layout, expectations, and the format of practices and events. e coaches then meticulously inspect the firearms, ensuring a structured and secure environment. Tim underscores the parents’ consistent satisfaction with the club’s unyielding focus on safety. Since its inception, Tim says there have been zero injuries; even with 2100-3000 kids at competitions, there are no injuries.
e enthusiasm of the students propels Tim to continue coaching, even as his daughter went off to college. He finds immense joy in keeping the kids engaged and active outdoors, away from screens and video games. It’s a space where all backgrounds and affiliations converge, united in their shared pursuit of learning, shooting, and experiencing life together. e club cultivates camaraderie, good sportsmanship, and above all, safety.
Tim’s most cherished aspect of leading the club lies in its diversity. It’s not limited to any specific demographic. Within these club grounds, everyone supports one another; there are no divisions or cliques. Age is irrelevant, as every member cheers on their peers, creating an atmosphere of unity and encouragement.
As Tim aptly notes, this camaraderie is emblematic of sportsmen’s clubs across the region. ey function as extended families, rallying support for their members as well as those of neighboring clubs. For aspiring marksmen, Tim imparts simple yet invaluable advice: prioritize safety above all, practice consistently, and enjoy the process. He urges marksmen to refrain from being overly critical of themselves. Instead, embrace the journey, he says, understanding that proficiency comes with time and dedication, much like bowling and other sports.
For additional information on clubs in your area, visit nyclaytarget.com
To truly grasp the club’s impact, one must witness it in action, Tim insists. Even parents initially hesitant about their children’s participation have visited and been reassured of its safety measures. From the beginning, the club places an unwavering emphasis on safety. Prior to their first meeting, all participants must complete an online safety course. During their initial gathering, firearms remain absent as the group familiarizes themselves with the

Suspecting and Diagnosing Hereditary Hemochromatosis
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was diagnosed with hemochromatosis 13 months before he died. I recommended that his blood relatives get tested so they can get treatment early, if necessary. Some doctors don’t know to check ferritin levels to make a diagnosis in a person with a family history of hemochromatosis. -- C.G.
ANSWER: Hereditary hemochromatosis (HHC) is a genetic disease of iron overload. In a person with HHC, the intestines absorb as much iron as they can all the time, even if the body doesn’t need it, whereas a person without HHC will simply stop absorbing iron if it isn’t necessary. The iron can go into and damage many organs, especially the liver, heart, bone marrow, hormone-producing glands and skin. The diagnosis should be suspected in close relatives of an affected person. Although checking ferritin levels is useful in making the diagnosis, iron tests, total iron-binding capacity tests and hemoglobin tests should also be ordered. If the family member has a recognized genetic mutation, such as C282Y homozygote or C282Y/H63D compound heterozygote, those genetic tests may also be useful in making the diagnosis. The diagnosis should even be suspected in people with vague symptoms, such as weakness and fatigue. I teach my students and residents to consider the possibility of iron overload, as it is common, easily tested for, and easily treated with phlebotomy (blood removal). Symptomatic HHC is more common at an earlier age in men than women, but it still should be considered in younger women.
A clinician should also consider iron overload in people with enlarged livers or abnormal liver enzymes, diabetes, changes in skin tone (bronze or gray), heart failure and some kinds of arthritis. Most people with these conditions do not have HHC, but initial testing is cheap and easy.
Treatment can be done by donating blood. My first patient with HHC donated over 100 units of blood before his blood levels came down to the target range.

osteoporosis. The NIH notes that magnesium is widely distributed in plants. That means it can be found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including spinach, edamame, black beans, bananas, and broccoli. Magnesium levels vary significantly in these foods, so anyone concerned about magnesium deficiency can speak with their physicians about the best and healthiest ways to include more in their diets.

WHY THE FLU SHOT IS SO IMPORTANT IN 2020
As the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, it’s imperative that people everywhere take every step necessary to protect themselves and others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that a flu vaccine will not protect people against COVID-19. However, flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of illness related to the flu. Those illnesses weaken people’s immune systems, making them more vulnerable to other viruses, including COVID-19.
Flu vaccines have also been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization. That’s a significant benefit of being vaccinated, as people who get their flu shots can indirectly help hospitals conserve potentially scarce resources.
Many people may be concerned about going out and getting a flu shot in 2020. However, the CDC notes that getting a flu shot in 2020 is an essential part of protecting your health and the health of your family.
DID YOU KNOW?
Aerial yoga is a relatively new form of the Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline of yoga. Inspired by aerial gymnastics, calisthenics, pilates, and, of course, yoga, aerial yoga is sometimes referred to as “antigravity yoga.” This unique form of yoga involves the use of hammocks suspended from the ceiling that support practitioners’ bodies, allowing them to work against gravity. Popular aerial yoga poses include aerial lunges, the half boat pose, the reclining angle pose, and the one-legged king pigeon pose. Though aerial yoga is a recent phenomenon, those interested in pursuing this unique form of exercise can seek more information at local yoga studios. Unlike traditional yoga that many people can practice at home without supervision, aerial yoga participants should only perform the poses under the supervision of professionals.

Note Left on My Car
To whoever left a note on my car under the windshield wiper, you have done the right thing. You said, “I accidentally backed into your car. I’m so sorry. I checked everywhere on both cars and it appeared there was no damage.” and you left your phone number. Thank you! We need many more people like you in the world - people who are respectful of others’ property and take responsibility for their actions when they have an accident. You could’ve just as easily ran off, but you took responsibility for your error and did the right thing. By the way, I checked everything and there was no damage.
Thank you!
The Sunday before Labor Day, I had a fish dinner and coffee for lunch in the Canal View Restaurant in Newark. When I asked for my bill, I was told the couple at the table next to my booth had paid it. They had already left so I couldn’t thank them. Hopefully they will see this and know how much I appreciate it. Thank you so much! How thoughtful!

Youth Football
Hey youth football team. Want to know why your numbers are down? You might want to look internally at the coaches of these kids. They do not make it fun and they are obviously only coaching for their own kids. They are more concerned about statistics of YOUTH FOOTBALL players and making highlight films and posting these so -called stats on social media touting how great they are. What about the other players, the average players or the players who are on the fence about playing.? This is what youth football should be about, making a connection with ALL the players. Is the board really afraid of the coaches? Is this why they will not speak up? Bring back small town football......please!!

To the women at the local Urgent Care, you are clearly in the wrong profession. My daughter was laughed at and mocked (thankfully she has a witness) when all she wanted to do was be seen and receive an x-ray!
All you wanted to do was gossip and make fun of those who need help!? You have been reported!

PAW’S CORNER
How long do rabbits live?
We rescued Bella from a kill shelter in Mississippi. She’s a Yellow Lab/German Shepherd mix. She enjoys setting on the deck and watching deer and rabbits. (She doesn’t bark.)
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a pet rabbit, Brownie, who is nearly 10 years old! He’s a Holland Lop, I think. He doesn’t do much at this age but sort of half-heartedly flop around his cage and the porch, then he settles onto the raised shelf in his cage and nibbles on carrots. He seems healthy, just slow. How much longer does he have le ? Do you think he’s lonely? -- Vicky R., Macon, Georgia
DEAR VICKY: First of all, wow! Ten years is quite a lifespan for a Holland Lop. It’s a testament to how well you care for him.
While the average lifespan of this rabbit breed is six to eight years, I have heard of H-Lops reaching 10, 12 or even 16 years of age! Care and comfort are really important for rabbits at any age. ey need a secure hutch, stable temperatures in summer and winter, fresh water always available, and good nutrition. ey also need things to gnaw on so their front teeth don’t grow too long, as well as plenty of fresh vegetables.
Introducing a new rabbit to the mix can be risky. ey might not take to each other, and fighting with another rabbit can cause stress, which can be deadly.
It sounds like Brownie is doing really well for his age. I recommend checking in with his vet if you notice any changes in his behavior or ability to get around. It sounds like you’re a little concerned that he isn’t moving around as much. GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress.
The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.
LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY
Announce your departure. Work collectively with your manager and other higher-ups to decide how to best handle the announcement to other employees.
