DID YOU KNOW? Charcoal grills can remain hot for hours, even long after the flames have extinguished. As a result, charcoal grill users should recognize that their jobs are not done once the burgers, hot dogs and other foods have been removed from the grill. To safeguard against fires resulting from still-hot charcoal grills, grillmasters should avoid moving the grill while the coals are still burning hot. In addition, avoid placing any flammable objects close to the grill while the coals are cooling down. Potentially combustible items should also be kept far away from charcoal grills, ideally in locations where gusts of wind cannot blow them toward the grill. Charcoal grill owners can also inspect the metal grates on their grills to make sure they are not rusted. Damaged or rusted grates can make it possible for items to fall down onto surfaces below the grate, increasing the risk of fire. Another way for charcoal grill users to make using their grills more safe is to avoid the use of starter fluid or other igniters once the coals have been ignited. Doing so only increases the risk of fire or accident and is unlikely to help the coals maintain a strong flame that lasts long enough to cook foods quickly.

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your opinion of the alkaline diet? I have several friends who have battled cancer, and they have adopted alkaline diets as adjuncts to their cancer treatments. Do alkaline diets assist in the treatment and prevention of cancers, or is it just another urban myth? -- T.F.C. ANSWER: A diet high in fruits and vegetables may have a beneficial effect on cancer treatment, in combination with the best cancer treatments available, whether they are surgical, chemotherapeutic or radiation-based. Some of the “alkaline diets” I have read about do emphasize fruits and vegetables, and they may help and certainly will not hurt. However, there is no diet that is a substitute for comprehensive cancer care. The body has powerful mechanisms for maintaining an exact pH, regardless of the acidity (or alkalinity) of the food you eat. Both the lungs and the kidneys work together to maintain the body’s pH at a slightly alkaline 7.4. Only with severe illness will the body’s pH come out of its narrow range of normal, and when it does, that portends a poor outcome without immediate treatment. The mechanism by which fruits and vegetables have been shown to benefit some cancers is not precisely known, but it probably has to do with healthful components of the food, not through any effect on body alkalinity. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

HOMETOWN Summer health and beauty guidelines Protect hair and skin. Relaxing in the summertime sun does not mean you should forgo protection. Remember to always apply sunblock to all parts of your body. Some hair products contain sunblock to protect the scalp, and men who shave their heads or are naturally balding should be diligent about applying sunblock to the top of their heads. Don’t forget to apply sunblock to the tops of your feet and your ears.

SAFE WAYS TO DEAL WITH SINUS PRESSURE Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses. When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur. In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy. Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba. The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections. Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe. Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY

End of Summer Specials

Hand tools and gardening tools usually can be cleaned with rags. If these tools are especially dirty, give them a wash with soap and water. Just be sure to dry the tools thoroughly after washing them. LifeHacker advises wiping down wooden handles on tools with linseed oil to keep them in good repair. Power tools may benefit from compressed air being blown into smaller crevices to dislodge sawdust and other debris. Lubricate any moving parts with a product recommended by the manufacturer. Keeping tools clean and in good repair goes a long way toward safer, more efficient home improvement projects.

585-967-7919 BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus.

Since the FDA has approved the Pfizer vaccine, do you think more people will be willing to get vaccinated who haven’t already done so? 17% Yes, absolutely! 50% Yes, if their concern was vax safety. 33% No way!

The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Should I Give My Dog a Lyme Disease Vaccine? --DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A fellow dog owner mentioned to me at the dog park that he had given his spaniel a vaccine to prevent Lyme disease. I’m wondering if I should do the same for my dog. How old should a dog be to receive the vaccine? Does it really protect dogs? -- Clint F., Saco, Maine DEAR CLINT: While it’s known that a Lyme vaccine (there are four different vaccines available today for dogs) does confer protection against contracting the disease from ticks, veterinarians are still debating whether it’s necessary to vaccinate dogs. You can read two vets’ opinions on this in a recent issue of Today’s Veterinary Practice (https://todaysveterinarypractice.com/vaccinating-dogs-against-lyme-disease/), with one for vaccination and the other not so sure. If you live in an area where Lyme disease is frequently diagnosed, and your dog loves being outdoors, you may want to consider the vaccine for your dog. If you only take your pet to the dog park and otherwise don’t spend much time exploring outside, a vaccine may not be necessary. The vaccine can be given to dogs as young as 8 to 9 weeks, and booster shots are recommended after the first shot. Even if you vaccinate your dog, you need to continue tick and flea prevention measures. Check your dog’s coat after every jaunt outside and quickly remove ticks. Mow the lawn regularly to discourage ticks and other pests from hanging out; if they’re still a problem, treat the lawn to deal with a flea or tick infestation. Not all ticks carry Lyme disease, but some carry other serious diseases, so keeping them off your dog and out of your home is a good idea. Send your comments, questions and tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

(NAPSI)—The next time you find yourself kicking your leg out of the side of your blankets to cool off or turning your pillow over because it’s too hot— you won’t be alone. Some 50 million Americans are affected by intermittent sleep problems, potentially created by bedding choices, according to the National Sleep Foundation—but you don’t have to be. Not many people realize it, but surrounding yourself with breathable fabrics while you sleep is essential for a restful night. Airflow matters because it lets heat naturally dissipate away from your body and helps keep your temperature regulated. Overheating can lead to a night of tossing and turning, leaving you groggy the next day because you didn’t recover properly the night before. What To Do So what’s the solution? It’s possible to get more out of each day by enhancing your sleep environment. There are options that can cater to your individual sleep position, body frame and temperature to help you maximize recovery at night. Consider these facts and tips for a better night’s sleep: 1. There are 24 vertebrae in your back, eight of which are supported by a pillow and the rest by your mattress. Therefore, while you’re sleeping, 30 percent of your comfort comes from your pillow and 70 percent comes from your mattress. This is why it’s important to have the right fit of sleep equipment that supports your body’s needs. 2. Get personalized. It’s true that one size doesn’t fit all—especially when it comes to your bedding. You might want to check out Bedgear, which offers a personalized Performance Sleep System and a Pillow ID fitting process, used by professional sports teams such as the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks. The process is designed to fit people with individualized products for the best sleep every night. 3. Spend the last hour before bed away from electronics. Taking some time to relax and unwind calms your body and helps your brain transition more easily into deep sleep. At the same time, you’re removing artificial sources of the blue light found in electronic devices that activates your brain to stay awake and can disrupt sleep. Personalization, coupled with fabric technologies that are engineered to promote airflow and assist with temperature regulation, can ensure that your sleep environment is optimized for the best rest. Learn More: For further information on how to upgrade your sleep, visit www.bedgear.com.

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the blue sky, is by no means waste of time. ~John Lubbock, “Recreation,” The Use of Life, 1894

THREE COOL IDEAS FOR A BETTER NIGHT’S REST Vice President

Livingston County Announces New Funding with Back to Business Program BY LIVINGSTON COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

L

ivingston County Economic Development (LCED) has received supplemental Community Development Block Grant funding to be used to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. In response to the economic hardships experienced by businesses resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, these funds are being used to provide grants to eligible businesses to support customer and staff safety, improve business resiliency, reopen Livingston County businesses to full capacity, and expand businesses to recover revenue quickly. Eligible businesses must be located in Livingston County, must be a for-profit sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, Limited Liability Company or other legal form of business, and must have 25 or fewer employees. Eligible businesses must create new jobs, restore jobs (including increasing hours), or retain jobs that are at risk of being lost if financial assistance is not received. If the business has five or fewer owners and employees, the applicant may be able to income qualify for funding in place of creating jobs. All projects must be located in Livingston County, New York and have a “brick-andmortar” business location that is not a home address. “This is an opportunity for resilience and growth in the businesses of Livingston County. Bill Bacon, LCED Director These grants are meant to spur innovation and adaptation to the new reality of economic life with a highly contagious virus”, says Bill Bacon, Director of Economic Development. Back to Business will make grants of up to $60,000 per eligible applicant. “This program will bring back jobs, enhance the way business is done, and expand services to increase customer satisfaction,” says Bacon. “We have definitely seen an increase in people supporting local businesses,” said Maureen Wheeler, LCED Deputy Director. “A lot of people are moving to the area, and customers are visiting local businesses once again. Our Back to Business program seeks to proactively help businesses better prepare for the future.” To qualify, businesses must demonstrate hardship from COVID and show that they have a project they are working on for their business. These projects are expected to vary from things like expanding outdoor dining to bringing people back to work to restoring businesses to pre-COVID hours. “Customers expect a different type of service than they did in the past, including options such as touch-free checkout, curbside pickup, and e-commerce availability,” explained

Wheeler. “They want to be able to browse merchandise online before they order, for example. These expectations are here to stay.” Grant funds will be provided as a reimbursement for eligible expenses, not to exceed 80% of total project cost. Eligible expenses must be incurred after award, and within 90 days of award. Program funds may be used for any justifiable business purpose associated with the expansion or establishment of operations after the negative impacts of COVID-19 including, but not limited to furniture, fixtures, equipment, operating expenses, and working capital that will prevent, prepare for, and respond to the impacts of the Maureen Wheeler, coronavirus pandemic. HOMETOWN PHOTOS Great neighbors! I would like to thank my neighbors for mowing my “lawn,” lending me your weed trimmer, and always being willing to offer a kind word and a helping hand. Also special thanks to one of our other neighbors for helping us paint our ceilings and stairs and for helping us catch our puppy when she got loose. We are so blessed to have moved to such a caring neighborhood! - Amanda D. Woodward Memorial Library Since road construction has been going on in front of the Woodward Memorial library, some patrons have been having a hard time returning & getting books, movies ect... The librarians now come down to the school 6 times a week for pick ups & drop offs which is greatly appreciated! I would like to give a shout out to Trish for taking the time to pick out some wonderful books for myself and my husband to read! All the ladies who work there are so helpful, especially when it comes to using the computer, faxing, ect... We are very thankful for their patience! Just wanted to thank you all for the great job that you do! - The Prince Family

Bad drivers I just don't understand why people driving on [local road] going towards [local road], have to pass you on the right when you are going around 65. They get in front of you to turn and then go slow, as if taunting you. Does it make you feel like a big man, Mr. Gray Toyota SUV? Seriously, what was your problem because I beat you at the light? Get a life!

Best wishes! Congrats to Steve at Steve’s Styles on his retirement! You certainly deserve it. Karen, I’m so excited for your new journey! - Christine W.

Wake up and hear the music Hard of hearing or very near is all I can figure for the "sound engineers" at concerts these days. Just attended a [local] concert the other evening, and thanks to the droning bass and percussion, I could not hear a word (lyric). So sad the money that is spent and the lack of enjoyment for these overpriced concerts, especially now that we can attend them in person! There is no need to feel the music as the sound people seem to insist upon.

Thank you! A special thank you to all our military families for the sacrifices you make for our country every day. It shouldn’t take tragedies like Afghanistan to bring it to our attention. Every day, for every contribution, we should convey how much your service is appreciated!

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles On Our Wish List: Basketballs The recreation center is open again! While they tried to do a “soft opening,” word traveled quickly. Going to the rec center won’t be as it was before, of course. There used to be classes in the middle of the gym, which is surrounded by a long indoor track. Scattered around the interior were basketball hoops and exercise mats. Now, we’re told, we’ll check in at the front door for a specified timeslot (one hour) on the track. At the end of our time period, the center will be emptied and the next group let in. There will be no classes, no use of mats, no basketball ... but we’ll have indoor walking. This is the best news we’ve had around here in a very long time. Indoor walking, while not urgently needed right now, will be most welcome when cold weather arrives. Icy sidewalks send many of us to the rec center, which was closed last year, to walk in winter. But, we’re told, we won’t be able to buddy up and walk with a friend, chatting as we do laps. We’ll walk alone in the right lane, passing in the left lane if we should overtake the person in front of us. No, we won’t be able to use the mats for pre-walk stretching (they’re stacked in the storeroom), and no, the guys won’t be able to play basketball (the balls also are in the storeroom). So, why, if there are so many restrictions about using the rec center, are we happy? We’re happy because it’s one small sign that maybe, just maybe, things are inching back to normal. How will we know for sure? We’ll know, said one wit, if we walk into the rec center and the basketballs are on their racks at the center of the courts. That’s going to be our barometer: basketballs. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In early 2016, a 155-year-old mousetrap caught a mouse in a British museum. The trap was part of the exposition and hadn’t even been considered operational for a long time.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Use club soda on a damp rag to wipe down your stainless-steel sink. It will help bring back the shine. * Fresh versus frozen in the seafood aisle: Unless you’re at the docks, most seafood in the grocer’s fresh fish case is thawed from frozen. Always ask. It’s much cheaper to buy frozen and thaw it yourself.

PERFECT PICNIC POPCORN SQUARES Yield: 12 squares 1 cup light corn syrup 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup reduced-fat peanut butter 3/4 cup raisins 8 cups air-popped popcorn nonstick cooking spray In large saucepan, combine corn syrup, sugar, brown sugar and peanut butter. Bring to boil over low heat, stirring constantly; boil 2-3 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat. In large bowl, combine raisins and popcorn; pour hot mixture over popcorn and toss carefully with wooden spoons until well-coated. Spray 9-by-13 inch baking dish with cooking spray; press popcorn mixture into pan and cool completely.

* “My mother swears by wrapping her feet in a vinegarsoaked rag once a week to soften calluses. She does this before her bath, and uses a pumice stone to rid her heels of hardened spots on the skin. It seems to work for her, so I thought I would pass it on!” -- C.D. in Colorado * “If you need to keep your 1-year-old corralled in the bath, try using a laundry basket. The water flows in, but she has only so much room to roam. And it lessens the odds she could slip away from you to the other side of the tub. Always stay with baby from the first drop to the last!” -- W.H. in Texas * To distinguish all the cords plugged into a power strip, write the appliance name (TV, DVD, speakers, etc.) on a plastic bread tab, and attach it to the cord at the plug. A quick look at the power strip, and you can unplug any appliance without having to follow the cord through the jungle behind your entertainment center!

How to Succeed at

Socially Distancing According to your Zodiac Sign Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19): You love a little competition. Try out a new fitness regimen, like the Couch to 5k program, and plan a future race or marathon. Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): Your home always looks great, but a little re-decorating never hurt anyone! Pro tip: take pictures of each room on your phone first to get an objective view of what you would like to change. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): That good idea you’ve been sitting on? It’s time to come up with a stellar business plan. Don’t know where to start? Resist the isolating internet this time, and try emailing a local business leader you admire to set up a phone call – they would love to help, and the time to network is now! Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22): You hate the idea of avoiding the people you love, but they understand and really do appreciate your thoughtfulness. Get close instead to the authors that inspire you. Copy out a paragraph you especially love, then give the story your own spin. Have your family do the same, then compare your creations! Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22): This is a time of opportunity for you. The stock market is on sale and you are not afraid to buy! Stay modest and share your passion for finance with the kids in your family by helping them set up virtual investment accounts through online games like Wall Street Survivor. Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your desire for organization is finally going to be satisfied! Make things more pinteresting by tapping into your creativity to develop some new DIY storage hacks. Marie Kondo has nothing on you! Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): Your naturally social self will have to find expression in more creative ways. Start an initiative focusing on what can be done to help maintain the vitality of the small businesses in your area, like buying gift cards online or over the phone to use later on.

Isolation got you down? Here’s some fun suggestions on how you can help

“flatten the curve” now! Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): Everything is an argument nowadays! By sharpening your own debate skills, you might actually build bridges instead of burning them. Get started with a fun read like Mastering Logical Fallacies (Withey) before turning to the prisoner’s dilemma. Is it time for a career in politics? Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21): Your professional success is borne of your energy and enthusiasm. Channel these traits into refreshing the space around your home, like a garden or deck. It might seem like slow going at first, but “it does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop” (Confucius). Your investment will be rewarded sooner rather than later. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19): Staying at home for you means expanding your reach! Move out of your comfort zone and organize friends and family to write cards for residents of the local nursing homes. The joy of small, random acts of kindness will spread to all areas of your life. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your bunker is filled with nothing but sheet masks, foie gras and red wine. Good thing, too, because the Metropolitan Opera is offering “Nightly Met Opera Streams” for free every evening at 7:30pm at metopera.org. If you’re fancy and you know it clap your hands! Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20): Now is the time to become the master chef you always knew you were! Make your meal plan, break out the cookbooks and get to it. Remember to take your time and enjoy the process. By offering to safely deliver meals to those in need, your culinary fame will only increase.

HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus. Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” -- Lao Tzu HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES

Introducing ON THE SHOULDERS

Venture off campus. Towns that rely heavily on colleges or universities to support their economies typically offer great deals to students willing to venture off campus. Local businesses, including bars, restaurants and entertainment venues like mini golf facilities or bowling alleys, may offer student discounts to entice kids to leave campus. Students can take advantage of these offerings to save on food and entertainment, which tend to be among the more pricey cost-of-living expenses college students contend with.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.
