Reinvent Leftovers With A Wrap Leftovers can be a nutritious lunch option that also saves you a lot of money, but how many times do you get stuck eating the same thing twice, or sometimes three times, in a few days? Reinvent your leftovers by using a tortilla wrap. Whole-wheat wraps are great for just about anything - fill with your leftover pork, beef or chicken, add some cheese and salsa, and you now have a zesty wrap that is good for you too. Tortillas can stay fresh for a long time, so buy a package and store it in a sealed container in the fridge so this handy food is always available for creative lunching.
It’s Football Season!! Pizza & Wings!! Any way you slice it! The Pizza Corner Guarantee. I have a commitment to providing a quality product to all my customers. Taste to see if you need any more salt. For a thicker version (for hot dogs, chili burgers, etc.), omit the chicken stock.

Prevent stairway injuries Stairs are a necessity in many homes. While stairs serve a practical purpose, they also have the potential to be dangerous. According to the National Safety Council, more than one million injuries result each year from stairway falls. Staircase and stairway accidents constitute the second leading cause of accidental injury, second only to motor vehicle accidents. Each year, there are 12,000 stairway accident deaths. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation states that a large portion of Canadians who visit hospitals after a fall on or from stairs or steps in their homes are seniors (men and women age 65 years or older). However, many stairway falls can be prevented with some simple planning. · Install sturdy handrails. A common contributor to stairway falls is a failure to use handrails. Sturdy handrails can decrease fall rates. Even if a person slips, he or she may be able to prevent the fall by grabbing on to the handrails and regaining some of his or her balance. · Rely on highlighters or friction strips. According to a study titled, “Safety on stairs: Influence of a tread edge highlighter and its position,” by Richard J. Foster, fall risk may be reduced by using a highlighter positioned flush with the tread edge. This helps make stairs more visible, particularly for those with impaired vision. · Improve lighting on staircases. Failure to see steps may contribute to falls as well. Staircases should be well lit so that residents and guests know where to step. Subtle

foot-level lighting can be installed to make it easier for people who frequently use steps at night. · Use slip-resistant materials. Slip-resistant surface material acceptable for normal floors should work on stair treads. Loose rugs should not be placed at the top or bottom of the landing. Outdoors, rough finishes are recommended, particularly on stairs that are subject to getting wet. · Improve step geometry. If slips and falls frequently occur on a particular staircase, consider the relationship between the rise and the run, advises the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. The National Building Code of Canada says that, within a staircase, treads should have a uniform run and tread depth that does not vary more than 0.5 to 1 cm. Steep steps with high risers and/or short treads can increase the risk of falls. · Clear away clutter. One easy way to prevent falls is to keep stairs free of clutter. This means removing shoes, toys and other belongings that may be left on stairs or landings. Many falls on stairs can be prevented by being mindful of certain risk factors.

RESOLVE TO WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT IN THE YEAR AHEAD Many people struggle to find the right size clothing, shoes and undergarments. It’s a situation that affects both men and women. Consider these facts: • Research by menswear retailer Jacamo found 22 percent of British men are wearing the wrong size clothes or shoes. • A recent international study done by Swiss lingerie company Triumph found that, of the 10,000 women polled, 64 percent are wearing the incorrect bra size. • The average shoe size is up about two sizes since the 1970s. Yet, at least one-third of men and half of women are buying the wrong size, according to Long Tall Sally, a U.K.-based apparel and footwear retailer that gets almost half its sales from North America. Many people today purchase their clothing off the rack and never step inside a tailor’s shop unless it is to have formal clothing adjusted for special occasions. People generally give little thought to taking out the measuring tape and getting a refresher on their measurements - despite changes in their body weights. Plus, many do not recheck their shoe sizes, likely because shoe stores are mostly self-service and the number of Brannock devices, or the standard foot measuring tool for the worlds footwear industry, are dwindling in retail centers.

Simple Ways to Manage Pain To help reduce and prevent pain, try these easy tips to keep you doing the things you love while helping minimize pain and keeping that spring in your step this winter: Sit Tall: If you have a desk job, proper posture can help to reduce back pain as you age. Sit with your back straight with your shoulders back; distribute your body weight evenly on both hips, bend your knees at right angles and keep your feet flat on the floor. Be Flexible: Whether it’s weekly yoga, or standing up and stretching between long periods of sitting, flexibility can help you stay fit and strong. One simple stretch: stand with your feet shoulder width apart, place hands on your lower back with finger tips pointing down, slowly lean back as far as comfortable while looking up at the ceiling, then return to start. Repeat five times. Eat Smart: Reduce the risk of inflammation by incorporating antiinflammatory foods such as tomatoes, olive oil, nuts, fatty fish, fruits and vegetables into your diet as much as possible.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 76-year-old woman with diabetes. My body, as I have been told, is bad with arthritis, for which I have been prescribed Celebrex. I have been taking it for a few months now, and am definitely moving around with a lot less pain. I recently watched a program that devoted the entire hour to Celebrex. It scared me out of my wits upon hearing the side effects of the medicine. I am asking your advice about whether to stop taking the Celebrex. -- S.A. ANSWER: All medicines have risks, and in order to decide whether you should keep taking the medicine, you need to really understand what the risks are and balance them against the benefits you feel in your ability to move around more easily. In the case of Celebrex, we have a pretty good idea of what the risks are. Like all related drugs (including ibuprofen and naproxen), celecoxib (Celebrex) can damage the kidneys, so it isn’t recommended for people with kidney disease. There also can be allergic reactions, which may be related to allergies to sulfa drugs. A few people have had vision changes. However, the most concerning risk is heart disease -- both heart attacks and heart failure. These risks definitely are increased among users of celecoxib. However, the absolute risk is small: There were about two extra cases of all heart events, including heart attack and heart failure, per thousand people taking 400 mg once daily, and six extra events in people taking 400 mg twice daily. Those risks probably are higher if you are at increased risk for heart disease (which you probably are, because of your diabetes), but it still means less than 1 percent of people per year. If the medicine isn’t helping, the risk certainly isn’t worth it. However, only you can decide if the risk is worth the benefit. Drug companies get into big trouble when they try to hide the risks of their medications, and honesty demands that we admit that all drugs and supplements have risks. Only you can make that decision, but I think it’s up to us as doctors to have a frank discussion, especially about medications intended to be taken long-term. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 72-year-old female. My doctor told me four years ago that I would need a Pap test only every two years, which I have done. She told me recently that I would not need to have any more. My tests have always been negative. I am concerned, as I would rather be proactive and know early if I had cancer. What is your opinion, and what does the American Cancer Society say? -- B.L.S. ANSWER: All of the leading organizations, including the American Cancer Society, have recommended stopping screening at age 65 for women with no history of cancer and who have had adequate screening, meaning three negative Pap smears (or two negative combination Pap and HPV tests) in the past 10 years, with at least one in the past five years. The risk for cancer in this specific group is very low. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. A big Thank You to Gretchen, Tammy and all the other amazing moms who put on the annual Gift away at the Brockport Elks Lodge! Because of you, hundreds of children will have gifts for the holidays. A special thanks to everyone who donated! I want to thank the people who volunteer their time and resources for the many needed activities in our communities. Also, those who work diligently to cover end of the year vacations in any business, seasonal staff who often work long and sometimes thankless hours, and our emergency and road crews who work through the night to keep us safe, a big THANK YOU! For at least 20 years I have avoided going to the dentist because of fear. Needless to say I needed a lot of dental work done. I was having a lot of pain, and that’s when I found White

Spruce Dental. They were professional and caring, but most of all they did not criticize me for neglecting my teeth. I am no longer afraid of going to the dentist, which is huge for me! Dr. Nozik and his entire staff are wonderful. I would like to say a special thank you to Lisa and Zeypeh. I recommend this office all the time and will continue to do so. Suzanne
This year, I was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. I have encountered many wonderful service providers along this journey that have been so kind to me during this time. From receptionists, doctors, customer service people at my insurance company, to my hair stylist who helped me cut my hair since it was falling out. I have been treated better than I ever have in my life. While I really appreciate people’s caring nature and friendly ways, I challenge this mindset at the same time. I shouldn’t be treated any differently because I have a disease. We are all fighting a battle of some sort in our lives. Your battle may not be my battle, but it’s important whatever it may be. Being kind to others is a selfish act for me since my diagnosis. I challenge you to see if you feel the same.

about abuse of animals by psycho killers who progress to committing these crimes on humans.
How long does it take to repair the bridges? This work has been going on for months and still isn’t totally completed yet. It seems that there is a mini crew taking their time on this job. Traffic is backed up due to lane closures all along this route and sometimes no work is even taking place at all. It sure seems like this small crew of workers is taking their sweet time with little regard to the motorists trying to get to work or home after work. Everyone knows we can avoid offensive sites, but there is one thing I don’t understand. A site I used to enjoy has so many beautiful photos of flowers and my greatest love, animals. I was browsing baby animals and the most gruesome photos were included in this pin. It only took one to get me weeping and turning off my computer, although there were many more. Cruelty is not normal. We all know
To the person who vented in the last Penny Saver about having to spend $0.02 for an envelope and $0.46 for a stamp to pay your High School tax: If you are leaving NYS because of $0.48 it sounds like you have a first world problem. Also it seems that you are paying all of your bills with checks since you emphasized that you didn’t get a return envelope as you do with your other bills. Welcome to 2016 where we have this thing called the internet. You’re squawking about paying $0.48 and threatening about being the next one to leave NYS... Feel free to leave. Trust me... the money you pay for your high school taxes and $0.48 to pay the bill to send in your archaic check won’t be missed. Ciao! Can the village and water / sewer please fix the manhole covers? The last paving by the village added too much material without having the manholes covers raised. My car will be out of alignment or someone will swerve and hit oncoming traffic.

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time. ~J. Lubbock
Livonia Third-Graders Make a Difference in the Lives of Homeless Animals Go Figure!
During the month of December, four third-graders put their passion for homeless animals and their plight to find their “fur-ever” homes to work by creating a campaign in conjunction with Livonia Central School to raise awareness of and bring in donations for Susie Q Dog ResQ and Hearthside Cats. Ultimately, they wanted to give pets a good Christmas even if they didn’t have homes. Sophie Beikirch, Gabby Peri, Aubrey Rivera and Molly Rowe researched several areas to donate to before coming up with Susie Q Dog ResQ and Hearthside Cats and then looked at the organizations’ websites to see what supplies the groups needed. After brainstorming their idea, they presented their plan to Principal Whittle who ultimately approved their idea. With the support of third-grade teacher Mrs. Willow Johnston, the girls worked hard on creating signs and making announcements to fellow students in the elementary school. Parents helped by posting the details of the drive on social media sites. Bins were put out in the school to accept donations of dog and cat food, cat litter, toys, blankets and towels, leashes and halters. They were able
Sophie Beikirch, Aubrey Rivera, Gabby Peri & Molly Rowe
to collect enough donations to fill the backs of two vehicles! Of course, without the support of their fellow students, teachers, administration and parents this would not have been possible. It was a true display of the meaning of small community support. The girls want everyone to know they can make a difference, too, by donating to these groups or even by adopting one of the many pets that are ready for adoption. Switch to e-statements for bank documents and utility bills. Paper is a big contributor to household clutter. That’s still the case even though many adults now pay the majority of their bills online. When given the chance to choose between paper or e-statements, opt for the latter so bills and bank statements don’t pile up on your desk or throughout your home office. If you still want to keep important bills and bank statements, download them to your computer and keep them in a designated folder on your desktop.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success.

Winners of the rental economy There are a few benefits to renting. Renters are much more mobile: They can move to take a better job if the opportunity arises. And, more often than not, renting is cheaper than buying. If renters are disciplined about investing those savings, they can come out with more wealth than buyers. Plus, renters don’t lose their shirts in housing busts.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!

Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Invite Early When hosting a business dinner, it’s best to give prospective or existing clients at least one week’s notice. Anything less than a week will seem too lastminute and might give clients the impression, whether true or false, that a host and his company are disorganized and sloppy. When taking a client to breakfast or lunch, the invitation can be extended with less than a week’s notice, but no less than a few days in advance.
