What a blessing it was to have the Classical Conversations group visit the Genesee County Nursing Home. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the caroling, cards and poinsettia pins. Thank you for spreading Christmas cheer! My car was stuck in a snow bank last night in absolute awful weather. Even though seeing right in front of you was difficult, two people stopped and made sure I was okay. When we live in a world where everyone has a cell phone, we often think not to stop – how much more are we going to be able to help this person when they have probably called someone and are getting help already? Well, I will think to stop next time because it was reassuring, especially since I was out on rural roads with nothing nearby. Thank you to all who stop and offer to help when they see someone stranded as well as those who tow out our cars and brave the storms to help others. You are all appreciated! Nicole Darrow, Holley To the Caring Residents and Businesses of Avon – Thank you for all the support you give to the Avon Food Pantry! A big thank you to Jennifer, who is now heading the operation, and to Chris for the work she has done. There are so many businesses and residents who give so much to help the ones less fortunate. I’ve lived in Avon for 78 years and have seen how caring the community is – what a blessing! Also, thank you Lions Club, for your gracious support. Thank you everyone! You know who you are! Merry Christmas & God Bless You All! Louie To Merri Mathes, Thank you for your dedication, caring, hard work and enthusiasm in making the Adventures 4-H Club AMAZING every year! The Palmer/Rusin Family!
I love this time of year. Laughs are less about being nervous and more about genuine joy. Hugs are given with a harder squeeze. Thanks are said with meaning and not just to be polite. Surprises are found hidden in candy-filled Christmas mugs. More hands are lent to those in need. Don’t stop, you kind & wonderful people, keep bringing happiness and encouragement. It’s contagious. ~Anonymous I want to thank the Good Samaritan who brushed all the snow off my truck this morning. It was a pleasant surprise after all the snow we had received the night before. Thank you again for your kindness! May you have the happiest of holidays and a blessed new year. A heartfelt thank you to the Livonia Ambulance, Livingston County EMS Medics, Noyes Memorial & Strong Hospital Emergency Departments along with the all the staff of the 6th floor 1200 unit at Strong Hospital for the care provided to our mother Diane Dillon on her recent stay. May you all have a blessed holiday season and Happy New Year 2017! Lynn, Ron & Jason Forrester A special thank you to everyone who helped put on the Christmas party at the Community Free Library in Holley on December 2nd. It was a special event and we love our library! What a wonderful blessing it is for the community!

Penny Saver Pet of the Week My name is Duncan and I found my parents when I was only 10 weeks old. They have shown me just how “cool” life can be when there is unconditional love. Besides lying in bed and snuggling with mom & dad, I love playing in the snow, so much that my mom and dad bought me my own coat and boots so I don’t get too cold playing outside…just don’t tell them I lost a boot! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. The following are some of the common types of mobility devices available for purchase. · Canes: Canes are handheld devices that provide a little extra stability or support to weakened limbs. Canes are easily transported and can assist those who need only a little help. · Standard walkers: Also known as medical walkers, standard walkers offer substantial support and must be lifted

to move. That requires upper body strength, which can be difficult for some to maintain on long trips. · Rolling walkers: Rolling walkers are similar to standard walkers. But rolling walkers have wheels, either on the front only or on both sets of legs. They are somewhat less stable than standard walkers. Rolling walkers with wheel-locking devices may offer stability when needed. Some rolling walkers are called “rollators.” · Wheelchairs: Standard wheelchairs must be powered by the person in the chair or by someone pushing it from behind. This can be difficult for people with minimal upper body strength. Mechanical wheelchairs are powered with a lever or button. Some people may opt for motorized scooters over bulkier wheelchairs when possible. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!
7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Make your goals public. By publicly declaring your intention to improve your life, you’re putting some positive pressure on yourself to fully commit to your goal. Friends and loved ones can be great sources of support, and once they’re aware of your efforts, you likely won’t want to let them down. Once you have decided on a resolution, post your short-term and long-term goals to your Facebook page or let your immediate family and closest friends know of your goals in person. Their encouragement can help you stay on track, and they may even offer to help you realize your goals.

WISDOM TEETH Wisdom teeth, also known as “third molars,” are the last teeth to develop and erupt into the mouth. Unfortunately, they are the most common teeth to be ‘impacted’ or unable to fully erupt between the ages of 15-20, but can be seen earlier or appear much later in life. Impacted teeth are not able to erupt through the gum tissue fully or at all. This can be due to many reasons, including lack of room for the teeth (jaw growth), malposition of teeth or pathology. Nearly everyone has at least 1 impacted wisdom tooth. Why are wisdom teeth removed? There are many reasons wisdom teeth require removal; These include pain, swelling, infection, orthodontic treatment, periodontal disease, cavities, shifting of teeth, age and pathology (such as cyst development). If not removed, impacted wisdom teeth could lead to damage of adjacent teeth or cause infection, which is a very common reason that they are removed. If they do erupt fully, they often are difficult to clean and maintain, have bacteria associated with them which can lead to systemic infection and illness that can affect the heart and make management of other illnesses such as diabetes more difficult. If the teeth remain impacted as people age, other pathology can develop, such as cysts and tumors. Management of these situations is often compromised by anatomy and other medical concerns. Pain-free does not mean problem-free or pathology-free. If the wisdom teeth erupt fully, are hygienic and without pathology, proper follow up is in order with periodic exam and x-rays. What is the best age to remove wisdom teeth? Studies have consistently shown that removing wisdom teeth in the teen years is by far easier for patients. This is due to bone being softer, roots not being fully developed, better healing process, and an essentially uncomplicated or benign medical history. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Wisdom Teeth If you have been recommended to have your wisdom teeth removed, you will most likely be referred to an Oral Surgeon (OMS) for evaluation. OMS’s remove thousands of teeth, including wisdom teeth, every year. They perform hundreds of anesthetics for various reasons every year, have advanced training in surgical and anesthetic complications and employ a team that is certified in anesthetic care giving. There are various types of anesthetics that an OMS can administer in a very safe and controlled environment. Most often, as a result of their extensive training and experience, teeth removed by an OMS results in less pain, swelling, infection and other complications.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please explain the difference between irritable bowel syndrome and irritable bowel disease? What is the treatment for each? I saw in a health magazine that there is a blood test to determine which one someone may have. -- ES ANSWER: Although the two names are very similar, the conditions are very different. Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition, more frequent in women than in men, of abdominal discomfort and bowel changes, such as diarrhea and/or constipation. It is managed by diet (such as the low-FODMAP diet I have recommended several times), stress management and sometimes medications. It can cause significant changes in one’s social life, in addition to pain and discomfort. IBS is a clinical diagnosis, and there is no blood test to confirm it. Primary-care doctors manage IBS, and severe cases may benefit from the care of a gastroenterologist. Irritable bowel disease -- of which there are two types: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease -- is a potentially life-threatening condition of the GI tract. In ulcerative colitis, there is inflammation that’s limited to the colon, whereas in Crohn’s disease, the inflammation can be in any part of the GI tract, from the lip to the anus, though it is most frequent in the far end of the small bowel and the colon. IBD should be managed by a gastroenterologist, preferably one with special expertise in these diseases. IBD usually is diagnosed by colonoscopy or other endoscopy with biopsy. Many blood tests can be abnormal in IBD, but only the pathologist’s report is definitive. Most people with IBD will need medication treatment, although symptoms and therefore treatment may change dramatically across time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 83 and recently began having sciatica pain down my right thigh. My doctor recommended using a hotwater bottle. Are there any painkillers I can use? Are there any other products I can use? -- G.L.B. ANSWER: The sciatic nerve is a very large nerve that runs down the back of the leg. When the nerve is pressed on in the back -from a herniated disk in the back or from spinal stenosis -- there can be intense pain that feels like it is coming from the back, or anywhere from the top of the thigh to the foot. Since other nerves besides the sciatic can be affected, the condition is called lumbar radiculopathy. A herniated disk is when the shock-absorbing material in between the vertebrae comes out into the space where the nerve root is, on its way out of the spinal column toward the leg. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the bony canal through which the nerve travels. In most cases, people get better within four to six weeks. Standard pain medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen, can be helpful. If pain is severe and not responsive, there are other treatments, including a short course of steroids and narcotics, which should be given only during that initial period of pain. Pain that persists for a longer period of time, or pain with weakness, especially with progressive symptoms, needs expert evaluation. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Students in the ADEPT program at Fairport High School show the three barrels of food they collected as part of a food drive to help support Foodlink, in December.
Students in Ms. McGrath’s and Mrs. Burgess’s ADEPT (Accessing and Developing Employment, Personal and Transitions skills) classes at Fairport High School (FHS) recently hosted a food drive for the Foodlink BackPack Program. As a result, the class was able to donate three full barrels of food and was awarded third place during the Tops Markets Food for Families Weigh-In Challenge this month to help support tens of thousands of children in the 10-county service area who receive free or reduced-price meals at school. “Our students were amazing as they created and displayed posters all over the school, were part of the morning announcements each day

Vaisey said students will be visiting Foodlink in early 2017 to help assemble the backpacks in an effort for students to see the process from start to finish.
