OVERCOME YOUR PADDY’S DAY HANGOVER Get to the gym. While it might seem impossible after a night spent overindulging in alcohol, some moderate exercise may help you feel better, at least mentally. Make sure you’re fully hydrated before hitting the gym so you’re less vulnerable to muscle cramps or injury, and drink water while exercising as well. Exercise releases neurochemicals and hormones, including endorphins, that can help boost your mood and provide some energy on a day when you might benefit from both of those things.

St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with many things, most notably the jovial atmosphere of the various events celebrating both the life of St. Patrick and Irish culture. New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are known for the Big Apple’s impressive parade up Fifth Avenue, while few who have partaken of Patty’s Day festivities in Chicago can forget the green Chicago River. Celebrations may vary from city to city, but it’s a good bet that celebrants will hear some traditional Irish music, enjoy a pint of Guinness and/or join the masses wearing green wherever they end up this St. Patrick’s Day. Drinking Irish coffee is another St. Patrick’s Day tradition many revelers enjoy. Few may indulge in Irish coffee throughout the year, but this special concoction can be a great way to warm up after attending a St. Patrick’s Day parade in the often chilly March temperatures. Cocktails made with coffee date back quite far, but Irish coffee does not have to go back too far to trace its history. In the mid-20th century, chef Joe Sheridan was working in Foynes, County Limerick when a group of United States-bound travelers found themselves stranded due to inclement weather that grounded their plane. Whether he was trying to warm them up or wake them up after their ordeal, Sheridan served the passengers coffee with a little bit of Irish whiskey mixed in. When the group inquired as to what they were drinking, Sheridan reportedly told them, “that’s Irish coffee.”

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride
AUTO SECTION
Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear.

SAFETY FIRST WHEN DRIVING WITH PETS Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot, but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes. The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.
DID YOU KNOW?
Members of:
Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When my grandmother passed away last fall, she left behind two beautiful cats. No one else in the family wanted to take care of them, so I took them in. However, I’m financially unable to care for them long-term, and the apartment complex I live in does not allow pets. I’m on borrowed time (and money) at this point, and praying that my apartment manager doesn’t find out about the cats. I contacted a shelter nearby to find out if they will accept the cats. They said there is a “surrender fee” of $200. No way can I pay that; I’m on a fixed income. What alternatives do I have? -- Sherrie R., via email DEAR SHERRIE: I’m sorry to hear about your predicament. You have extended your home and finances to care for two cats in need, and I salute you for it. But you’re right: the current situation is not ideal for you or the cats. When preparing to surrender a pet, the receiving shelter will request that you try every possible option first. Many shelters will provide advice and limited assistance for pet owners going through this. One option would be for you to contact family members and friends directly (not on public social media posts) to ask if they would be able to adopt the cats. If a surrender to the shelter is the last resort, contact your family to see if they can chip in for the surrender fees. After all, you’ve already taken on the cost of food, supplies and maybe medical care for them. You’ve taken on the risk of losing your lease, too. Speak calmly with your relatives about sharing the cost. Best of luck. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

“The Broad Majestic Shannon,” The Pogues: This song, from the legendary Celtic punk band’s 1988 album, was inspired by the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, and is sure to invite people to the dance floor with its opening notes. Lead singer Shane MacGowan, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished lyricists of his time, said the song is about an Irishman returning to his home along the Shannon after many years spent in London. That gives the song a somewhat autobiographical tilt, as MacGowan himself spent time living in London and Ireland.

WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES
Emerging trends in crafting – Bringing the outside in:
Invite small business owners to community activity centers, nursing homes, schools, and the like to share their experiences about starting a business in the area.
An ecologically sound and creative trend for spring involves crafting your own garden terrarium. Terrariums can be made out of just about any shaped glass or plastic container. Use hardy plants and a moisture-holding substrate to help your terrarium flourish. Terrariums can be interesting focal points for any room, and they’re a creative use for empty vases, aquariums and other containers collecting dust.
WHERE IRISH PEOPLE LIVE OUTSIDE OF EUROPE While everyone may claim to have a touch of Irish in them on St. Patrick’s Day, statistics indicate that many people can trace their lineage back to the Emerald Isle. In fact, the number of people of Irish descent is actually larger than the entire population of present-day Ireland. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 39.6 million Americans claim Irish heritage. Five million of these people say they are of Scots-Irish heritage. In addition, Irish is the second most common ancestry among Americans (German is first). The potato famine in Ireland was one of the catalysts that forced so many natives of Ireland to emigrate to the United States. Between 1845 and 1850, a fungus on potato crops decimated the number of edible potatoes. As a result, starvation and disease began to run rampant throughout Ireland, where it is believed as many as one million people lost their lives due to the famine. For many Irish people, leaving their homeland became necessary for survival. When Irish people arrived on the shores of America, the highest concentrations settled on the East Coast. Even today, Irish-Americans are strongly concentrated along the eastern side of the United States, particularly in the Northeast. Forbes indicates that the top six metro areas for Irish-Americans are in Massachusetts and New York. Massachusetts communities such as Weymouth, Quincy, Scituate, Braintree, and Marshfield each boast substantial Irish and Irish American populations. Albany and Buffalo in New York as well as smaller cities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey also are comprised of high numbers of Irish Americans. When Irish people arrived in North America, they brought many traditions with them. These immigrants also helped shape St. Patrick’s Day celebrations into what they are today - lavish affairs that attract thousands upon thousands of spectators. St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Boston, New York and Chicago are some of the best known to date, and new parades crop up in towns each and every year. Irish immigrants have influenced North American customs and become an integral part of the communities that they have turned into their homes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DON’T MISTAKE A SHAMROCK FOR A CLOVER All shamrocks are clovers, but not all clovers are shamrocks. The home and garden resource The Spruce indicates that the term “shamrock” comes from the Gaelic word seamrog, meaning “little clover.” There is no consensus as to which species of clover is the true shamrock. However, many botanists agree that the white clover (Trifolium repens) is the shamrock. However, the lesser trefoil, or hop clover, the black medick and red clover all can be contenders. Four-leafed clovers of any variety are not shamrocks and should not be portrayed as such. That is because the shamrock is a three-leafed sprout that was believed to be utilized by St. Patrick to demonstrate the principle behind the Holy Trinity. St. Patrick, pointing to the three leaflets united by a common stalk, used this visual analogy to spell out the mystery of Christianity’s doctrine of three entities making up one Lord: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Therefore, for all of the purported good luck finding a four-leaf clover may bring - based on mythology imparted by ancient Celts called Druids - it cannot be passed off as a shamrock.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I just read another sad story about a woman who had breast cancer, fought it and seemed to win, but after five years, it came back and took her life. The same sequence of events happened to my wife two years ago. She fought the second round of cancer for a year and a half, but it was just about everywhere. What is this connection between the initial breast cancer occurrence and it coming back five or six years later even more widespread throughout the body? Is screening stepped up during that period? -- Anon. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your wife. With most cancers, no evidence of disease five years out from diagnosis usually means a cure, that the person will not have a recurrence of that particular cancer, although people who’ve had one cancer are at a higher risk of developing a second, unrelated cancer. Breast cancer is one of the exceptions. Late recurrences (after five years) are possible, even very late recurrences. I have seen 20 years afterward, and there are reports of even longer. Although the reasons why breast cancer seems to hide for many years are not known precisely, we do know some risk factors for recurrence: Larger tumors are more likely to recur. Those with positive lymph nodes are at high risk, and women with estrogen receptor positive, progesterone receptor positive and HER2 negative tumors are more likely to experience recurrence. Screening is absolutely appropriate in women who have had breast cancer. There is not a consensus about the type and frequency of screening, but many experts choose yearly mammography. Breast MRI has been considered, but it has not been proven to be better in women with a history of breast cancer. A healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, abstinence from smoking and minimal alcohol intake, has been shown to reduce cancer risk in women with a history of breast cancer. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc., All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

OVERCOME YOUR PADDY’S DAY HANGOVER Stay hydrated throughout St. Patrick’s Day. If you’re going to be hoisting pints on St. Patrick’s Day, hoist glasses of water throughout the day as well. The International Alliance for Responsible Drinking recommends drinking water while consuming alcohol. The IARD notes that alcohol acts as a diuretic. That means that when the body breaks down alcohol, it removes water from the blood through your urine. That can contribute to dehydration, creating some of the more unpleasant effects associated with being hungover. Drink some water with each alcoholic beverage you consume. Page 12

Considering the fragile state of Ukraine and in light of the already senseless loss of life with further atrocities expected from the Russian military, should the United States become involved militarily to defend Ukraine?

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

DANSVILLE POP UP PANTRY TO PROVIDE MUCH-NEEDED FOOD ON MONDAY BY A M A N DA D U D E K
I
t’s no secret that the advent of the Covid pandemic has only created more food insecurity, both among those in need and among those who had not previously been struggling. As the first quarter of 2022 draws to a close, many families continue to face food insecurity thanks to rising food costs, the economy, and the state of global markets, among other factors. In areas like Livingston County for example, the most recent census data shows just over 10% of families live in poverty. To combat food insecurity in and around the Dansville area, UR Medicine/Noyes Health and The Hornell Area Family YMCA have joined together to host a Pop Up Pantry on Monday, March 14th. The pantry event will be held at Babcock Park from 4PM to 6PM. This extraordinarily necessary effort has received support from the entire community, including such community partners as TOPS Friendly Markets, Dansville Lions Club International, FoodLink, Dansville Rotary Club International, and Rentals to Go. Dansville’s Pop Up Pantry expects to distribute fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products, and other perishable and nonperishable foods. Spearheading this event are Tara Coffey, Manager of Community Outreach Services at UR Medicine | Noyes Health, Shane Marble, intern from Alfred University, and Julie Camacho, Dansville Branch Coordinator at Hornell Area Family YMCA. “Foodlink expects to provide a large truck fi lled with approximately 11-12 pallets, an abundance of food,” Coffey shared, also recognizing community outreach support from the United Way. She explained that several members of the community have wished to hold such an event for some time, with the last being held more than a year ago. “We wanted to hold an event in the fall, but there was no way we could do something this big without more planning,” Coffey explained. “Our goal is to feed 100 families.”
“I have been working here for about 20 years, and I have seen the need. It is hugely important for everyone out there, especially with Covid which has destroyed savings and disrupted support networks.” - Tara Coffey
Shane Marble, an Alfred State intern working with Coffey, has been essential in laying the groundwork for Dansville’s upcoming Pop Up Pantry. “I was born and raised in Dansville,” said Marble, an adult student in the fi nal semester of his Human Services Management degree. When Marble looked for more to do, Coffey suggested the Pop Up Pantry. Marble was immediately invested.
“Helping people is my passion. I grew up in a single-parent home, so I know what it is like to struggle for food,” he said, explaining how he jumped right in. “I think the first day [Coffey] gave [this project] to me, I talked with both the Chief of Police and the Mayor to see if we would be able to hold the event at Babcock.” “I spoke with Dansville Fire Chief Brian Wood to get those important permissions,” Marble continued. “I also spoke with Laura Cutting, a social worker at Dansville Central School. She gave me a whole list of people to contact, such as the Rotary, Lions Club, and Boy Scouts. Now, we have about 20 volunteers signed up for the event with 10 more coming at this point. The whole town really jumped on it with the Dansville Lions Club committing seven volunteers right off the bat: our biggest bunch!”

Marble explained that Coffey has been handling the administrative planning and paperwork for the event. Meanwhile, Dansville YMCA Coordinator Julie Camacho became certified to be the Pop Up Pantry coordinator on the ground during the event. “We are trying to build a solid foundation so that when my internship is up, we have a reliable base of names, numbers, and volunteers to continue these events on a bi-monthly basis,” Marble concluded. Coffey and Marble both clearly see such food distribution events as ongoing necessities. “The Livingston County Department of Health is currently conducting a food insecurity survey,” explained Coffey. “I have been working here for about 20 years, and I have seen the need. It is hugely important for everyone out there, especially with Covid, which has destroyed savings and disrupted support networks.” Coffey credits Marble for his efforts in making the event a reality. “I believe we couldn’t make this happen without Shane!” affirmed Coffey. Her sentiments of gratitude extend to the whole community, as well. “All of the organizations in Dansville have been so willing to step up,” said Coffey as Marble agreed. “I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to them and to all of our volunteers for making this all happen.” This is a drive thru event; trunks must be able to be opened. Boxes and bags will not be included. If you would like your food bagged or boxed, please bring some with you. For additional questions, please email Julie Camacho jcamacho@hornellymca.com

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE REPLACING WINDOWS Consider other energy-efficient upgrades. Sometimes older windows can be salvaged, especially if they are not damaged and only moderately drafty. Replacing panes, sash cords, weather stripping, and even glazing may be less expensive than replacing a window. Plus, older homes with attractive windows complement one another. To keep energy bills down, think about adding insulation to the attic and basement - which is a good idea even if you are replacing windows.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Before You Sign Up for Senior Discounts We all want to save a dollar every place we can. Discounts aimed at seniors are a good way to get our attention, but now and then it’s just not a good idea to sign up. For example, if you’re low income, Amazon Prime offers a reduced-price membership. With Prime you get free shipping, access to movies and music, and more. Your membership is only $5.95 per month -- after you furnish an image of your Social Security, Medicaid (not Medicare), TANF or SNAP card. You’ll need to renew this every year to keep getting the discount to ensure you’re still on the program. You can stay on this reduced rate for four years. The dilemma is that you’re providing your personal information -- Medicaid number, Social Security number and so on -- to people you don’t know. Where does that information end up? If you cancel your membership, is that information destroyed? Reduced prescription costs are available at certain drugstore chains, but generally on a limited basis, perhaps one day per month. One chain will offer to let you link a new account with them to your existing AARP membership. With another one, should you prefer not to give them your email address, they’re more than happy to take your name and phone number instead. A number of phone companies have reduced plans for seniors. But they do verify your age. With two of them you need to go into the store with a valid ID. With another they’ll use the information they already have on file from when you started your original service with them. How
securely have they kept that information? Before you snap up a senior discount deal, consider what you need to give up to get that discount. Think about whether the information you give can be used for identity theft. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Caffeine, which is found in tea leaves, guarana berries, kola nuts and, of course, coffee beans, acts as a natural pesticide. It overloads the nervous systems of insects that try to eat the plants containing it, paralyzing and even killing them before they can do too much damage.
BREAKING DOWN THE LEPRECHAUN MYTH While 21st century celebrants of St. Patrick’s Day might be hard pressed to find images of leprechauns not dressed in green, that wasn’t always the case. Prior to the 20th century, leprechauns were described in various depictions as wearing red.

S E V RA Above & Beyond While my husband and I were at Maple Tree Inn this past weekend, we happened to witness a business that went above and beyond for a customer who was in great distress. They didn’t have to do what they did, and most businesses wouldn’t have. It was very heartwarming to see, and I for one applaud them. A great example of customer service and compassion. My Fair Lady Cheers to the Rochester Broadway Theatre League for bringing to Rochester the musical “My Fair Lady.” What a wonderful show it was, and I liked it even better than the original movie! It was that good! March Madness What a wonderful time of year it is for all of us hoop fans - it’s March Madness! Shout Out! Shout out to all of the fire, EMT, and other emergency responders for their hard work during the wind storm on Sunday. You are appreciated!
No Denying I’m confused regarding this back and forth about global warming. Who’s denying it? We all know it’s changing. The only question is how much does man really impact these changes? Sure, there’s a lot we can do to lessen our impact, but the changes of warming and cooling have been proven over and over again to be a part of our planet’s history. So, who’s denying it? Local Dog Walker It is great that you pick up after your dog when you walk our local neighborhood. However, it would be really great if you also took that little black bag back home with you! Today while walking, one of the people in the neighborhood put your 10 bags (yes 10 bags), in the middle of the sidewalk and this from just a short distance of a walk for most of us. We are all looking for you, and when we find you, the local police and dog warden will also know you. Why is it so hard to take the bag back home with you like a responsible person? The people’s lawns that you leave the little packages on are really tired of them. There is a law, you know, and you are not above it. We know it is from one person, and everyone is on the look out for you. Clean up and take your bags home. This is also your neighborhood, but you are not a good neighbor, that is for sure. Choices In response to Choose One: No, we should use either paper or plastic, metal or glass wherever appropriate. Paper bags, plastic cars? Yes, I hate to see a tree come down, but trees (and wood and paper) are renewable resources; oil is not. Paper is biodegradable; plastic is not. It’s that simple. We should choose the ones that are least damaging to the environment case by case.

CORNED BEEF & CABBAGE FOR ST. PATTY’S DAY Corned beef and cabbage might not be a part of many people’s diet regimens throughout the year. But come March 17, it’s not uncommon to find people from all walks of life indulging in this beloved meal. March 17 marks the celebration of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Over the years, the day has also become a celebration of the Emerald Isle. Such celebrations tend to feature corned beef and cabbage, even though the dish may have little to do with Ireland (and even less to do with St. Patrick). The precise origins of the link between corned beef and St. Patrick’s Day remain a topic of debate, but some historians say the corned beef enjoyed today can be traced to New York City’s Irish immigrant population in the 19th and 20th centuries, who popularized a salted meat made from brisket that was then sold by Jewish butchers. Regardless of the authenticity of its link to Ireland, corned beef is delicious and many modern Paddy’s Day celebrants wouldn’t think of going without it on March 17.
