MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR

Switch to e-statements for bank documents and utility bills. Paper is a big contributor to household clutter. That’s still the case even though many adults now pay the majority of their bills online. When given the chance to choose between paper or e-statements, opt for the latter so bills and bank statements don’t pile up on your desk or throughout your home office. If you still want to keep important bills and bank statements, download them to your computer and keep them in a designated folder on your desktop.

Start small, but start immediately. Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immediately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved ones will adjust to the changes necessary to realize your goals.

The winning pet will have $50 donated to a local animal shelter in his/her name.

CORBY’S COLLISION proudly servicing the area for 78 years. “We work with the insurance company, making the repair process easier”

To serve and safeguard our community, we are taking all necessary precautions to clean and disinfect your vehicles in this most critical time. We are here for your trusted repairs, and deeply care for the health of you and your family.

Having full view of w hat’s ahead and behind your vehicle, at all tim es, is vital, so be sure to check your w indshield w iper blades and w asher fluid before w inter precipitation hits. On a snow y or low -visibility day, you can easily go through half a gallon or m ore of w indshield w asher fluid trying to keep your view clear. For that reason, it’s also a good idea to keep som e extra fluid in the trunk in case you run out. In colder clim ates that experience ice or frost, you m ay w ant to keep a bottle of de-icing w indshield spray handy. Sim ply spray your icy w indshield w ith the fluid, turn on your vehicle defroster and your w indow s w ill clear quickly and easily.

Older properties tend to have a sense of charm that new ly built homes may lack. Perhaps it’s their lived-in feel or design elements that remind homeow ners of yesteryear that make older homes so popular among home buyers. W hat older homes have in character they may lack in modern amenities. For example, w hereas many homes are now built w ith energy efficiency in mind, older homes may not be so eco-friendly. Fortunately, there are many w ays for homeow ners w ho love their older homes to keep that love going strong w hile making their homes more energy efficient at the same time.

Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Home security: Wi-Fi enabled doorbells with video capabilities allow residents to see who is at the door without having to open it. Cameras can even be accessed remotely, simulating that someone is at home at all times. Never wonder if you’ve locked the door again with smart locks that can be engaged via a smartphone. Make sure that homes are secured or that pets are behaving while out with smart cameras.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * N.B. of Texas, writes: “I never could find the time to exercise. When I got home, I had to rush to get supper, etc., and afterward all I wanted to do was plop down and watch television. Then I got an exercise mat and a stationary bicycle. When I couldn’t work out very long, I worked out during commercials. I’ve lost 3 pounds so far!” Great idea for all those with fitness on their New Year’s Resolution lists, Nancy! * Two wonderful tips came in from G.K. of Minnesota: “To protect floors from being damaged by chairs being pushed around, glue rounds of carpeting beneath the chair legs. They are easily removed for replacing as they wear down. Also, when making bread or rolls, warm the flour in the oven or microwave so as not to chill the butter. The dough will rise faster.” * B.W. of Colorado swears by brake cleaner to get rid of bad spots on carpets. “Regular automotive brake cleaner on the spot and a clean rag will remove almost all stains,” he says. * “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- B.M. in New York * If your animals try to get out when you go into or out of the house, keep some toys or treats in your pocket or near the door to throw across the room, giving you a few seconds to slip in or out.

SHARED HABITS OF ORGANIZED PEOPLE The beginning of the year is an ideal time to get organized and set oneself up for productive months ahead. It’s also a good opportunity to take inventory of seldom-used items and clear out as much clutter as possible. The amount of stuff the average person owns can affect how easy or difficult it is for that person to get organized. In 2014, professional organizer Regina Lark estimated the average American home contains 300,000 items. And it’s not just adults who love to collect and keep things, as kids contribute to the problem, too. British research, as published in The Telegraph, indicates the average 10-year-old owns 238 toys, playing with just 12 in a typical day. All of these belongings contribute to disorganization and lost time. A study by Esure Home Insurance found looking for lost items accounts for 10 minutes of wasted time each day. Getting organized can take perseverance, but it’s possible.

Many people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: So many people are out of work right now, and there is little to no assistance available to them just to pay rent, much less buy food for themselves. I am wondering, how will people be able to feed their pets in this desperate situation? -- Jamie G., Atlanta DEAR JAMIE: One of the bright spots in this pandemic is the way that individuals have responded to help each other and fill the needs of tens of thousands -- maybe millions -- of pets. Shelters in many parts of the country have opened or expanded food pantries for pets to help owners keep their dogs and cats healthy and fed. Napa County, California, for example, transformed two empty shipping containers into a community pet pantry offering free supplies this summer. (Search for “Napa County’s new pet pantry” to learn more.) In Tuscon, Cody’s Friends, a charity started in 2010 by a 10-year-old boy, has seen a huge surge of demand for pet food and is distributing to area shelters and clinics as fast as possible (https://codysfriends.org). And in North Carolina, the Davidson County Animal Alliance extended its holiday pet food collection drive because there was so much need. If you are struggling to pay for pet food for any reason, contact your local shelter first and ask if there is a pet food program available. You may not be able to pick up food directly from a shelter; it may be distributed at a different location. Contact local food banks, churches and municipal offices. And of course, search online or on Facebook for these services as well. Also, if you’ve been waiting to donate food, pet supplies or cash to a local shelter or charity, now is your moment to shine. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Make your goals public. By publicly declaring your intention to improve your life, you’re putting some positive pressure on yourself to fully commit to your goal. Friends and loved ones can be great sources of support, and once they’re aware of your efforts, you likely won’t want to let them down. Once you have decided on a resolution, post your short-term and long-term goals to your Facebook page or let your immediate family and closest friends know of your goals in person. Their encouragement can help you stay on track, and they may even offer to help you realize your goals.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Office Test Alone Can’t Diagnose COPD ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a healthy 70-year-old woman. The only prescription medication I take is for dry eyes. I recently visited my new primary physician for the first time, and she had me do a breathing test, where I exhaled into a tube to measure airflow. I was told to breathe deeply and exhale completely into the tube three times in succession. It took less than a minute to complete. It is apparently a routine test she orders for new patients. She then told me I have COPD, on the basis of that test alone. She asked if I had ever smoked or been exposed to secondhand smoke. That was her only question -coughing or shortness of breath was never mentioned. I have never smoked, but my father was a smoker when I was growing up. I actually do have a slightly productive cough most mornings. I probably walk about 10 miles a week, and I do notice some shortness of breath on long uphill sections, though I can walk briskly in level areas for miles with no problem. She said it is not advanced enough to require an inhaler at this time. I am bothered by this very easy “diagnosis” on the basis of one simple test. I wonder if I should ask to be referred to a pulmonologist for a more thorough evaluation. -- O.P. ANSWER: The test your doctor performed is called office spirometry, and it is useful for monitoring known pulmonary diseases, especially COPD and asthma. However, by itself, it is inadequate to make the diagnosis of COPD, which I am not sure you have. The diagnosis of COPD is made in people with persistent respiratory symptoms, usually shortness of breath or coughing. Spirometry will usually show obstruction to airflow. Formal pulmonary function testing, which is an extensive process taking an hour or so with a skilled and experienced technician, is ideal for determining severity. The problem with getting a breathing test in someone who has no significant symptoms is that you can find someone whose test results are at or just below the lower limit of normal, and the diagnosis is unclear. The prognosis for people with mild airway obstruction but with no symptoms of COPD is much better than for people with COPD and who continue to smoke. For this reason, using spirometry as a screening test for everyone is not recommended. Without knowing the exact results of your spirometry, I suspect you do not have COPD, given your absence of smoking and your extremely mild symptoms. A comprehensive exam by a pulmonologist would be definitive and may help you be less anxious about the results you have now.

Caring for you and the community since 2001.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan.

Fai rport Community Helps Durf’s Win Pandemic Relief BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

f you live in the Fairport area, then you have probably eaten at Durf’s. This popular, local family restaurant has been cooking breakfast and lunch for Fairport families for over 40 years. Kathy Lloyd is the proud 2nd generation owner of Durf’s, family owned and operated since 1976. Leading a true community institution, Lloyd likely not only knows your name, but she may also be cooking your order before you have even been seated! When the effects of pandemic shutdowns and limitations threatened to close the doors of this beloved local eatery for good, the Fairport community knew they had to do something about it. Kathy Lloyd was very concerned that Durf’s may not be able to weather takeout only and reduced capacity dining. The thought of permanently closing broke her heart. “My dad started our restaurant as just a counter around the cookline at Seabreeze,” she shared, noting that her father, who suffered a serious stroke at the beginning of 2020, decided to move Durf’s to Fairport in 1978. “My family still lives here; Fairport people are my family.” “The pandemic changed everything,” she continued. “We had to learn how to operate our restaurant as a high-volume takeout only. It was a whole different world! Then, when we were allowed to have limited dine-in, it became even more of a challenge.” The Fairport community, however, was not about to let Durf’s go without a fight. “They have rallied around us every time we struggled,” shared Lloyd. “They have always been there for us. They comment encouraging words on social media. They would support us at their comfort level, whether dine-in or takeout. A customer even started a GoFundMe page for us. It’s hard to put the huge amount of support we have received into words.”

me because she needed my information and participation. I didn’t know we had won though. She drove all the way to my home with the owner of Barstool Sports on video chat to record him telling me we won!” Lloyd, who describes herself as “a kind of shy person,” was overwhelmed with Durf ’s Family Restaurant, Fairport gratitude. “I was just in tears and humbled, completely humbled,” she said. “Barstool Sports is going to pay our restaurant’s lease until COVID-19 is over and our business is able to return to regular operation. The community, all of their support and joy for us, it is just amazing.” Well-aware of the struggle many businesses are still facing, Lloyd offers these words of encouragement: “We have to go day by day,” she said. “We also have to support each other in any way we can. Don’t stop fighting. Keep looking for ways to get through this.”

“We also have to support each other in any way we can. Don’t stop fighting. Keep looking for ways to get through this!”

“I always knew my family - Kathy Lloyd restaurant was a very special place,” she added. “I didn’t realize just how big our support was, and I am so humbled by it. Our customers are a part of our family. We know many of them by name. It has been an honor to carry on my dad’s legacy. I can only offer my thanks and appreciation to Barstool Sports, my family, and our Fairport community.” The Durfee Family (Kathy Lloyd third from left)

Then, during the handful of days between the time when this writer requested an interview with Lloyd and the day we actually spoke, something incredible happened. Lloyd’s niece, Daphne Croop, who in the family tradition had also worked at Durf’s, entered the family restaurant in a contest run by BarstoolSports.com. “She took the initiative to write a story and send it in,” explained Lloyd. “She then had 24 hours to put together a video of video clips from the community in support of Durf’s and send it in.” The response Croop received was overwhelming. “Daphne reached out to the Fairport community, and they sent her so many clips she couldn’t even use them all!” exclaimed Lloyd. “We won! My niece was trying to keep this a secret to surprise me, but she had to tell
