How Long Can Dog Stay Outside in the Snow?

Stella Luna is a Rat Terrier with some ears. She looks like the children’s book about a bat. Lives with a big brother and a medium sister. She joined the pack last but took charge almost immediately. Her hearing is so acute we have to cover her up so she relaxes.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog loves to go outdoors, but I worry that it’s too cold and icy for her to be outside right now. I’m housebound and unable to take “Sookie” out for walks or to play in the snow. I have a fenced yard, but I can’t supervise her. My younger neighbor takes her out every morning for a few minutes, and that’s it. What can I do? -- Sara P., Bennington, Vermont

DEAR SARAH: Big props to your neighbor for helping to take care of Sookie! Even on cold winter days, a few minutes outside can be uplifting for your dog. And a “relief,” if you know what I mean. If Sookie stays in the fenced yard and comes when you call her, it may be safe to let her out once or twice during the day. How long she stays out depends on her size and cold tolerance. Very small dogs should not be outside for more than a few minutes when it’s below freezing, and should be wrapped up to get warm again quickly. Medium and large dogs can tolerate longer periods. The colder the air and the more ferocious the weather, the less time they should spend outside. When your dog comes in, either from her morning walk or from the fenced yard, rub down her fur with a dry towel and check the underside of her paws for cuts and abrasions. If she is shivering when she comes in, make sure she warms up, and ask your neighbor to bring her in a little sooner. Make sure that Sookie has plenty of water to drink throughout the day: Staying hydrated will help her stay warm. Send your comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

This Rapid Heartbeat Appears Normal on EKG --DEAR DR. ROACH: I had symptoms of lightheadedness, so my doctor ordered an EKG and sent me to a cardiologist. They did a heart monitor for a week and said I have inappropriate sinus tachycardia but that I don’t need any treatment. I’m still having symptoms. What can I do? -- B.V. ANSWER: Inappropriate sinus tachycardia is an uncommon diagnosis, most often seen in women in their 30s. The heart rate is fast (“tachycardia”), but on an EKG it appears normal, meaning it comes from the sino-atrial node, the natural pacemaker of the heart, hence “sinus.” The average heart rate must be over 90 for 24 hours. It’s important to be sure there isn’t another cause for the tachycardia, such as elevated thyroid levels, fever, volume depletion (dehydration) or anemia. The symptoms may continue for months or even years. Common symptoms include the lightheadedness you felt, but may also include palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness and decreased ability to exercise. The diagnosis can sometimes be confused with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), where the heart rate dramatically increases with changing to an upright position. A tilt-table test is the diagnostic tool for POTS. If there is no other reason for sinus tachycardia, then medication may be used to reduce symptoms. A beta blocker is the usual first choice, but there are others available. I found some more information at https://tinyurl.com/ ISTheart that may be useful for you.

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Exercise in the great outdoors. Fitness enthusiasts can reduce their energy consumption by exercising outdoors whenever possible. Replace running in place on a treadmill with running through a park or on a beach outside. Men and women who work out in their homes can take the free weights outdoors to the backyard on nice days, allowing Mother Nature instead of the electric company to supply the lighting.

hair loss. My hair has always been long and thick, but it is coming out in handfuls. I can only think it must be due to my blood pressure medicines. I’ve been taking amlodipine and lisinopril for years. I’m in good health and 90 years young. -- M. ANSWER: It is unlikely that the hair loss is due to either amlodipine or lisinopril. Neither of these are well described to provoke hair loss, and if a medicine is going to do that, it usually does within a few months. The most common cause of hair loss in a 90-year-old woman is female pattern hair loss, in which the hair loss is mostly on the front and top of the scalp. However, there are several causes of hair loss, and a dermatologist may be helpful in determining the cause and treatment. Please don’t stop taking your blood pressure medicine. ***

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles On Medicare? Beware of COVID Card Scam Have you received a phone call asking if you’ve received your new “special” Medicare COVID card? Beware: There is no such thing. It’s a scam. I did receive such a call. The person on the other end asked if I’d received my new card, which I’d heard nothing about, and proceeded to try to ask me a number of questions. She claimed there are a lot of fancy benefits that come with the COVID card. In the name of research for this column, I did not hang up immediately as I usually do. Instead, I went along with the caller, listening but not providing any information. I asked where they’d gotten my name and was told they were accessing the Medicare database. I was quickly convinced it was a scam. I hung up and called the Medicare fraud line to report it. The fraud people were very glad I did. Other forms of COVID scams include offering fast eligibility for the vaccine, fake vaccine sign-up websites, fake testing and wellness kits, and fake contact tracers who want to know your Medicare card number. Fact: There is no new Medicare card for COVID. Fact: Medicare isn’t going to call you about anything unless you have called or written to them and asked them to contact you by phone. If you receive a call such as the one I got, hang up immediately and then call to report it. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227), or HHS at 1-800-447-8477. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you have a steel or metal door, stick a few magnets on the inside for a handy spot to attach reminders and other notes. If your door is wood, just attach a piece of corkboard to a strip of the door. With pushpins, it works the same way. * “If you find a pretty bottle of lotion, you can refill it when it runs out. I add a little bit of essential oils to my store-brand lotion.” -- G.E. in California * Remove white rings on wood tables with mayo! Slather a spoonful of mayonnaise on the spot and let it stand for an hour or so. Wipe clean. Repeat as necessary. * Use nail polish in bright colors to mark the settings on your washer. The nail polish doesn’t wear off like a marker might. * Got unmatched socks? Save them for the grandkids to use for hand puppets. You can help them sew buttons on, and use yarn for hair. A barrette can be glued or sewn on for a nose. * “Here’s a DIY softener sheet for the dryer. Just cut up an old shirt into small squares about the size of your hand. Use a sealable jar and add liquid fabric softener and water in equal parts, and then add all the squares to the liquid. When you move clothes from the washer into the dryer, take a piece, squeeze it out and toss in the dryer. They are reusable -- afterward, just put it back in the jar!” -- D.R. in Florida

Do home improvement projects now, before winter The to-do chores never seem to go away, which can make you want to leave the projects for another season. After all, the deck is going to be covered by snow all winter and the house can always be repainted in the spring. But taking care of these jobs now has benefits beyond just crossing them off of your to-do list. For homeowners in areas of the country that have harsh winter weather, refinishing the deck this fall will help protect it from the winter elements like sleet, snow and ice. For those who live in milder climates, refinishing the deck now means you’ll still get to enjoy the fruits of your labor into the cooler months - and get a jump on spring chores. In addition, having your deck and your house in the best condition going into the rough winter months means that you’ll minimize any damage that could be caused by harsh weather conditions. To get the maximum benefits out of your efforts, take the time to make any necessary repairs to your deck or siding before you start painting. This could include patching any imperfections in your siding and sanding away peeling paint. On the deck, replace warped boards and nail down loose ones. A good cleaning ensures that the surface is ready for stain or paint. Once you’re ready to paint, make sure you have the right tools for the job. It will make the task quicker and easier, and provide more professional-looking results. Paint brushes and rollers have their place as useful tools, but for making quick work of painting a house or finishing a deck, nothing beats a power paint sprayer. The beauty of outdoor painting is that a paint sprayer can be used to get the job done in a few easy strokes.

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

Understanding food labels is a great first step toward eating healthy.

Billieve! Congratulations to the Buffalo uffalo uff alo Bills! Although they didn’t win the he AFC Championship that we were hoping for, they had an amazing season! Thank you for providing excitement and entertainment to an otherwise dreary few months. Thank you… To all those who check on their neighbors, run errands, write notes, and make phone calls to those who are housebound due to COVID or bad weather. It means a lot. Hats off Hats off to our GVPS Adult Carriers and Postal Workers that get our beloved Penny Saver delivered week in and week out during these Winter months laced with Covid.

How ‘bout them Browns! and Bills! A few decades ago, the Cleveland Browns were an extremely popular and followed team in Western New York, for a couple of reasons: they were pretty good and fun to watch; their games were picked up in the Rochester area and hence grew a fan base. Wonderful that they bested the Steelers two weeks in a row to make the playoffs. And the Bills almost making the Super Bowl was quite an accomplishment for such a young team. Both teams’ futures look bright!

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. Say “I

You” to your Community: Shop Local for Valentine’s Day! By Amanda Dudek

I

t is no secret that 2020 left many local businesses struggling. In fact, in its September 2020 Economic Impact Report, popular review platform, Yelp, reported that 163,735 businesses had shut down by August 31st, 60% of them never to reopen. According to data from the Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs, employers with fewer than 100 workers account for 98.2% of all businesses. The clear majority, these “small” businesses are the backbone of our communities. “American business is overwhelmingly small business,” states the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council. That they are in such desperate straits is concerning, a fact with which many Americans agree, so much so that the plight of local businesses has kickstarted a shop local trend. According to Mint Personal Finance, a personal financial management company, 1 in 5 consumers were focused on shopping small businesses in the winter of 2020, and one third of shoppers bought more gift cards from these businesses. Heading into 2021, the trend has remained strong. Red Egg Marketing, a Colorado marketing agency, found that a resounding 83% of American consumers would prefer to purchase local products over national products, and 84% were willing to spend a bit more to do so. The reason? A survey by Mint Personal Finance reports consumers’ primary motivation is to keep money local, followed by supporting their community and local creators, a better service experience, and supporting nonprofits. Those remaining local shops, eateries, and other establishments have and continue to survive on the loyalty and mindful spending choices each of us make every day.

companies have become shopping habits for many consumers, and as with most habits, changing these patterns will take time, mindfulness, and perhaps a few new options.

Planning a special Valentine’s Day? Try one or more of our tips, and show some extra love to local businesses while you’re at it! • Budget for local shopping. This tip is so intuitively simple it’s easy to miss. Rather than merely hoping to remember to make a purchase or find necessities locally, just add local spending dollars to your monthly budget. Then, make it a point – and a pleasure – to spend those dollars locally as you see fit! Even a modest amount will make a difference. For example, if every family in the country spent just $10 locally each month, over $9.3 billion would stay local, according to United We Stand and Civic Economics Andersonville Study of Retail Economics. • Shop your favorite local businesses online. Have you searched for your favorite boutique online? Check again! For better or for worse, COVID-19 has changed the way people shop. During shutdowns, many items were only available online as brick-and-mortars temporarily closed their doors. Even now, as more and more businesses resume some open hours, many consumers continue to appreciate the convenience of online shopping. Fortunately, one faint silver lining was that temporary closures encouraged several of local retailers to take their business online. So, before you click on an online retailer, do a quick local search instead. You might be surprised!

Does shopping local really keep that much more money in my community? Absolutely! Shopping local keeps up to 4Xs as much money in your community than shopping at chains. According to multiple sources, at least 48% of every purchase at a local business is recirculated locally compared to just 14% of chain purchases and virtually 0% from online retailer purchases. As AMIBA (American Independent Business Alliance) puts it, “Buying remotely on the web creates almost no local benefit – just a few minutes’ work for a delivery person.” The difference is clear.

Ready to Shop Local? Check out our tips! Wait. Isn’t shopping local as simple as going to a local business and making a purchase? Well, yes and no. While we certainly hope you will frequent local businesses as much as possible, we recognize that shopping with online retailers as well as opting to shop at chain

• Share, share, and share some more! One of the best ways to support local businesses you love is by word-of-mouth and by click of mouse. Share photos of the items you love and tell everyone where you got them. Take a photo of yourself enjoying local businesses and share them to your social media. Invite friends and family members to like local businesses online. And of course, share the things you love by purchasing them as gifts for the people you love. ° µ ¾ À É ° ° É Ì Ñ Ò Ñ Ò Ó °

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.
