STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There have been more than 300 different Kit Kat flavors in Japan, including soy sauce, “European cheese” and wasabi. Some of them are limited or regional editions. Because the candy bar’s name coincidentally sounds like the Japanese expression “Kitto Katsu,” which translates to “You will surely win,” it is a popular good-luck gift for students ahead of their university exams. I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH Homeowners may associate mulch with springtime lawn and garden care, but mulching in fall can benefit a lawn as well. According to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, mulch protects roots against extreme temperatures, and not just those associated with summer heat waves. Mulch is often connected with its ability to help soil retain moisture during especially warm times of the year, when mulch promotes strong roots that can help lawns and plants survive periods of extreme heat. But when applied in the fall, mulch also inhibits freezing and thawing in winter, reducing the likelihood that plants will be injured.

OTHER GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

Gardeners What is the best way to stop squirrels from eating the tomatoes when they are almost ready to pick. I tried peppermint oil spray; no luck. - Kathleen C. Physical exclusion may be a best choice. For a few plants, individual cages can be constructed from wire hardware cloth. Form a circular cage using the cut strands for hooks. Place it in the soil a few inches and stabilize with a stake driven in the ground. For a sizable patch of tomatoes, chicken wire fencing can be framed and installed to enclose the crop. COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT

In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.” Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis. If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found:

• Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19;

Advertising Sales Manager

...........................Manuel Karam

• Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure;

REFRESH YOUR SMILE!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Gluten-Free Foods Aren’t a Sales Gimmick ---

Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have no health issues, but I’m a cheapskate. I see products labeled as “grain-free” or as “gluten-free,” but they always cost more than the regular product. Are there any health benefits to using these, or are they marketing gimmicks? -- L.C. ANSWER: They are not marketing gimmicks at all. People with celiac disease have a sensitivity to a protein in gluten, called gliadin. Even small amounts of gluten can cause long-lasting damage to the intestines, and many people with celiac disease will be unable to properly absorb nutrients if they are regularly exposed to gluten. This can manifest with severe symptoms, such as weight loss, diarrhea and severe metabolic disturbance. Or it can trigger much milder ones, such as mild abdominal discomfort after eating, skin changes, anemia or joint pains. Because the symptoms of celiac disease are so varied, a physician must be fairly convinced it’s celiac before making the diagnosis. Biopsy is the gold standard for certainty, but blood testing -- if done while consuming a diet containing gluten -- is suggestive. I strongly recommend getting a diagnosis before going on a strict gluten-free diet if you suspect celiac disease. For people with diagnosed celiac disease, strict adherence to a gluten-free diet is essential, and the increasing availability of glutenfree foods has made the lives of people with celiac disease better. Many grains are gluten-free naturally. There are people with symptoms from gluten-containing foods but who do not have celiac disease. The term is “non-celiac gluten sensitivity.” Some people with this condition are sensitive to components of the food other than the gluten, although there are some people who are sensitive to gluten but do not have celiac disease. For people without NCGS and without celiac disease, avoiding gluten is not necessary. A diet with many different whole grains has been proven to reduce heart disease risk compared with a more meat-based diet. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Please discuss the problem of the thirst mechanism as it relates to the elderly. I’m 70 years old and in almost perfect physical health. I bicycle every day -- 75 miles each week. Even with this enormous physical exercise, I am never thirsty all day and night. Also, I do not perspire. I need to force myself to drink water. Why don’t I feel thirsty? -- M.U. ANSWER: Thirst is a powerful motivation. In people with an intact thirst mechanism, the desire for water can be overpowering; it’s one of the body’s main ways of regulating salt and volume in the body. You are exactly right that as people age, the thirst mechanism becomes less powerful, and that tends to leave older people with a slightly higher amount of salt in the body compared with younger people. Remembering to drink water, especially on hot days, reduces the risk of dehydration. However, people who drink continually may never trigger the thirst response. There are many social cues to drink, and people who are not losing fluid through exertion and sweat may never trigger a strong thirst response. Drinking too much is as dangerous as not drinking enough: If thirst is really impaired, you need to use other mechanisms to monitor fluid status. For example, needing to urinate every several hours (at least) is one way of staying in the right zone. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Before using any complementary therapy, patients should talk with their care team to make sure all aspects of their cancer care work together. Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Scammers' Tricks Are No Treat They never give up. Scammers are still taking every opportunity to steal our identity and separate us from our money, and the list keeps growing. Here are a few of the scams out there now: Seniors are getting calls from people who claim to be employees of the Department of Justice. Reports to the National Elder Fraud Hotline say that these scammers pretend to be investigators, and what they want is your personal information. If you get a call like this, don't be concerned that it's an authentic government call. It isn't. Just hang up. Maybe you'll get a call wanting to sell you an air purifier. They'll claim it will clean any coronavirus out of the air in your home. Maybe they'll try to get you to put it on a credit card, or they'll claim it's Medicare approved and all you need to do is give them your Medicare number. Don't fall for either of these tricks. Scammers will try these same tactics with miracle cures for COVID, masks that are "guaranteed" to protect you, face shields, vitamin supplements, free COVID tests, low-cost prescription drugs and much more. Sometimes scammers pretending to be from the government will try to get your personal information by saying they want to send you a stimulus check, or maybe they claim to need Census 2020 information. Sometimes it's about an expired warranty on your car or lower interest rates. Just hang up. Don't press 1 or any other number to have your number taken off their list. All that does is give them another opportunity to convince you to give up personal information. If someone you don't know leaves a message about any of these topics, ignore it. Remember that we seniors are the preferred target of these scammers. Don't fall for their tricks.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER The ovaries make most of the estrogen that is made by the body. Treatments that stop or lower the amount of estrogen made by the ovaries include surgery to remove the ovaries, radiation therapy, or taking certain drugs. This is called ovarian ablation. Premenopausal women who have a high risk of breast cancer due to certain changes in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes may choose to have a risk-reducing oophorectomy (the removal of both ovaries when there are no signs of cancer). This decreases the amount of estrogen made by the body and lowers the risk of breast cancer. Riskreducing oophorectomy also lowers the risk of breast cancer in normal premenopausal women and in women with an increased risk of breast cancer due to radiation to the chest. However, it is very important to have a cancer risk assessment and counseling before making this decision. The sudden drop in estrogen levels may cause the symptoms of menopause to begin. These include hot flashes, trouble sleeping, anxiety, and depression. Long-term effects include decreased sex drive, vaginal dryness, and decreased bone density. AUTOMOTIVE

Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY MEMBERS RECEIVE

Victor Women of Excellence Awards BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

n mid-August, three women were recognized for their leadership, volunteerism, and overall helpfulness within the Victor Community. They each received one of the Women of Excellence awards: the Student of Promise Award, the Lantern Award, and the Jikohnsaseh Woman of Excellence Award. Typically, winners are honored at an awards dinner held the third Wednesday in March; however, their recognition was delayed this year by the advent of COVID-19. Women of Excellence was established in 2012 and is based on Jikohnsaseh of Seneca Nation. Known as the Mother of Nations, Jikohnsaseh was a devoted leader to her people and was instrumental in bringing together the five disparate First People nations into the Iroquois Confederacy. Women of Excellence must echo her qualities such as her passion for peace between all people equally and her leadership and service in building and sustaining the Iroquois Confederacy. Contenders for this award are nominated by their peers throughout the year, and they must be women who take the time to lead, volunteer in, and promote the Victor area. This year saw quite a grouping of volunteers according to Pat Abbott of the Victor Chamber of Commerce. “The women feel honored to be nominated,” shared Abbott. “They do not expect to be recognized for what they are doing.” This year’s winners gathered for a small ceremony in Mead Square Park in Downtown Victor. In attendance were Amy DiPrima of Prima Pop and the Executive Director of the Victor Chamber of Commerce, Brad Pearson of the Simon School of Rochester and President of the Victor Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Dawn Santiago-Marullo, retired Superintendent of Victor Central Schools, and Kathy Rayburn, Director of the Town of Victor Economic Development. Including its present winners, Women of Excellence has honored 24 women since its inception.

in community initiatives. 2020 nominees also included Danielle Petroske, Jenna Venturo, Kaitlin Sidare, Liliana D’Alessandro, and Sydney Prescott.

McKayla Streber won this year’s Student of Promise Award. The Student of Promise Award focuses on being a role model and celebrates young women ages 15-18 who attend school or live in Victor. Nominees must be dedicated to education while significantly contributing to the betterment of Victor and its surrounding communities. Achievements should include leadership, mentoring, activism, volunteerism and/or participation

Joan Trost took home the 2020 Lantern Award. The Lantern Award recognizes volunteerism and lifetime achievement. Celebrating women who have contributed significantly to the Victor community by volunteering and/or participating in community programs and initiatives, Lantern Award nominees must have demonstrated achievement in the areas of volunteerism, community activism, leadership and mentoring over an extended period of time. 2020 Lantern Award nominees also included Carol Commisso (Village of Victor), Elizabeth (Lisa) Roberts (Victor Hiking Trails), Heather McAdoo (Presbyterian Church), Jane Heath (VCS Bus Monitor), and Shari Schmidt (Eat Plants Love). Darlene Cowles secured the Jikohnsaseh Woman of Excellence Award. Focused on professional achievement, this award honors women who live and/or work in Victor, have reached a level of professional achievement that is impressive and/or has contributed significantly to her chosen career field while also excelling in the areas of leadership and mentoring. 2020 nominees also included Glenna Colaprete-Hudson (Glenna’s CBD Best Oil), Jennifer Demo (JD Financial), Karen Falbo (Boccacino Heating), Mary Walpole-Lightsey (Ontario County Bar Association), Michelle Kennison (Legacy at Fairways), and Robin Barclay (Safe at Home PT). “We wish everyone well, and we hope to see women continue to grow in our community,” said Abbott. Those wishing to make a nomination should contact the Victor Chamber of Commerce. Most self-detected lumps that turn out to be breast cancer are found during normal routines such as showering or getting dressed, not during monthly breast self-exams. About 80% of breast cancers not discovered by mammography are discovered by women themselves. Knowing the landscape of your body and noticing slight changes is always wise. LANDSCAPES We just want to say thank you so much for your dedication and hard work during these very difficult times, especially this year. It’s very unfortunate the landscapers are always overlooked and underappreciated! They put their bodies and health on the line for unfair wages. They work in all kinds of weather conditions along with hazardous conditions! These laborers need higher wages and more appreciation. Show your support, public! THANK YOU, GOOD SAMARITAN! Our son recently lost his wallet in a parking lot in Canandaigua.

He was just about to go through the time-consuming steps of replacing his license, debit card, and other typical wallet essentials. After almost giving up hope, imagine our surprise when the wallet-fully intact, and with all cash still there-turned up in our mailbox. Since we have no idea who his guardian angel is, this is the best we can do to thank him or her for their efforts and honesty. Not only did they model human kindness, they saved my son a world of headache. His first words were, “Now I guess I need to do a random act of kindness for a perfect stranger!” Yes, he plans to pay your good deed forward. In this chaotic and divided world,

it was wonderful to experience this act of selflessness. Thank you! FIVE STARS Five Star deserves five stars! I want to thank Stephani (hope name is spelled correctly) for assisting me with my banking transaction. In a world filled with so many stresses and sorrows, it was a delight conversing with Stephani. What a laugh we shared about her ring. We laughed so hard she actually turned red. Of course, I made a mistake with my withdrawal slipwith all the laughter that I had to do it all over, but it was worth it. Laughter goes a long way. It made my day, and I can’t wait to return to

BE GONE! To the people who attacked the person who complained about their neighbor’s loud music, shame on you for ganging up on someone who respects the town ordinance. Do you even know what kind of music that neighbor was playing? Do you just assume it’s the kind of music you like? Such ignorance to assume all music has the same effect on everyone! If your music is loud enough to rock your neighbor’s house, you are intruding! Period. If I want free concerts, I’d live next to a stadium. You were completely irresponsible to “suggest” that the original complainer move their residence in order to get some peace in their life. I suggest that you people find out who you all are, move into the same neighborhood, and play

your personal outdoor concerts against each other. MUSIC RULES One cannot exact “rules” that dictate peace and quiet. Next, would they like to get rid of children playing in a neighborhood? Perhaps they would have a problem with dogs barking. A lot of things are of precious value. One of them is the fact that for those who live in a neighborhood, they cannot monitor what people do, especially when we live where we have certain freedoms. If a person wants peace and quiet all the time, then go to a library. Problem solved! Maybe cars and motorcycles zooming by the road is infringing on their “peace and quiet.” Maybe they don’t like neighbors working on their house and making noise with a hammer or drill. The point

is you have to be realistic when it comes to noise, and it’s give and take, especially when it comes to being neighbors. NO RESPECT When did it become okay to enter a person’s private property and relieve yourself? I live outside of town surrounded by fields. Fields are perfect places to stop in those times of dire need. I have a son, and I remember those times that just seemed to come out of nowhere. “I have to go now!” is shouted from the back seat. You find the nearest, safest place to pull over. When did a person’s paved driveway become the acceptable place to do this? This hasn’t always been commonplace, just in the last year. First time was when a child was allowed to relieve himself right onto my driveway as cars passed by. The second time was

Five Star in Brockport. Perhaps I will see Stephani again and we will share another humorous moment. So, Stephani thanks for the lighthearted moment that we shared. My husband just shook his head when I told him about our conversation about your ring. That will be our private joke. BIG THANK YOU! A big thank you to the person walking on East Lake Road, Livonia on Monday, September 14th. You smelled a gas leak coming from my neighbor’s home and called RG & E. Your involvement meant the situation was resolved safely, so thank you again for all you did!

just today. A car entered my driveway, and the driver opened their door and proceeded to vomit on my driveway. I have cameras now! I work hard for what I have, and you have no right!

HOMETOWN Penny Saver

Hi, my name is Gizmo and this is my begging face. It works sometimes, but my mama is very strict about feeding me people food. I spend most of my days following my mama around. I don’t like to be away from my mama for any length of time. I like to go for walks with mama, snuggle with mama and basically hang around with mama. I guess you could say I’m a mama’s boy.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

To end breast cancer, we need more focus on understanding how to prevent the disease from developing and how to stop the disease from spreading to other parts of the body. We need a greater understanding of how to find the aggressive cancers that are not detected with mammography, how to keep breast cancer from recurring, and how to prevent it from metastasizing to other parts of the body and becoming lethal. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Want a great way to clean around your faucets? The answer may be closer than you think! A worn-out toothbrush can do a much better job of cleaning fixtures than it can your teeth and gums. Simply brush the wet bristles of a toothbrush over the base and it’ll get in those nooks and crannies you can’t reach with a sponge. * Remove mildew from plastic shower curtains by spraying them with a mix of bleach and water, or just toss them in the washing machine with your next load of towels. * “We have a playroom, and the kids argue about who made what mess and who should pick up which toys. We made a cleaning schedule for the room, having one or two children per day responsible to clean up at the end of the day. It was a rough start, but the kids have learned to clean up as they go rather than leave a big mess for someone else (payback is not kind).” -– A.M. in Kentucky * If your vacuum has a paper filter, spray it with your favorite perfume or essential oil. It will blow into the air as you vacuum, leaving behind a pleasant scent. * “Need your nails to dry in a hurry? You can use the cool setting on your hair dryer. It works really fast.” -- L.E. in Georgia * Using your fireplace? Try adding citrus peels to the logs for a nice aroma. They can be a good starter material as well. Page 24

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Flea protection that’s safe and affordable DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Flea prevention treatments can be expensive, so I’ve been soaking orange peels in rubbing alcohol and spraying it on my pets and around the house. It seems to work, but even though I can’t see a single flea on my Rottweiler-pit bull mix “Debbie,” she is still scratching fiercely around her ears until they bleed. I tried ear mite drops because I think that’s the problem, but she just runs away from me. I can’t afford the vet right now. How can I solve the ear mite problem? -- Melissa, via email DEAR MELISSA: Stop using the rubbing alcohol on your pets immediately. It dries out a dog’s skin and causes irritation, and isopropyl alcohol can even poison a pet. The oil from the orange peel can be an irritant, too. Put the ear mite treatment on pause. It’s not improving the condition and is causing Debbie distress. It’s time to visit the vet. I know it’s expensive, but if money is an issue, tell the vet’s office when you call for an appointment. Low-cost vet clinics also may be available in your area. You can find them by searching online, asking the vet’s office or checking with the local pet-supply store. But Debbie needs to see a vet right now, because she’s suffering. To continue flea prevention without breaking the bank, consider treating your home with a product called diatomaceous earth (about $10-$14 for a 10-pound bag). Sprinkle it into the carpet and leave it for 48 hours, then vacuum it up. Reapply about once a month. You can even rub it into Debbie’s fur to kill fleas -- but only after her skin problem has been dealt with, because DE will irritate open wounds.

Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed.

Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished. Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity.

GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY

Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week. Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks. Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.

SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.

Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING A clinical breast exam is an exam of the breast by a doctor or other health professional. The doctor will carefully feel the breasts and under the arms for lumps or anything else that seems unusual. It is not known if having clinical breast exams decreases the chance of dying from breast cancer. Breast self-exams may be done by women or men to check their breasts for lumps or other changes. It is important to know how your breasts usually look and feel. If you feel any lumps or notice any other changes, talk to your doctor. Doing breast self-exams has not been shown to decrease the chance of dying from breast cancer.
