HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

shopping. We make purchases with the click of our mouse and receive packages at our front door. Those packages often bring with them a complementary twinge of guilt for not shopping local. While the click may be convenient, haven’t we grown tired of staring at our front doors?
• Each dollar you spend purchasing from a local, independent business returns at least $0.65 to your local community, compared to the zero to $0.01 returned with an online retailer.
Shopping is local is more important than ever this year! Unique, local goods await in deliberately uncrowded shops which give you the space and time you need to browse. Shoppers can also choose the convenience of curbside pick-up for their community-friendly purchases, often with a “touchless” option. So, move over, Amazon! Local business owners, our friends and neighbors, are once again open and more convenient than ever.
• Online retailers, which put a greater strain on roads, sewers and safety services, generate less revenue per sales dollar, often forcing local companies out of business. With fewer businesses to offset community costs, local tax burdens fall increasingly on community residents. • Online retailers employ fewer people directly per sales dollar. For each $10M spent, independent retailers create 47 new local jobs, whereas online retailers create less than half as many. • Displaced corporate businesses donate less than half as much per sales dollar to local non-profits, events and teams compared to small businesses. Online retailers donate even less. • Finally, local businesses are much more likely to be customers of local service providers including accountants, wholesalers, farmers, lawyers, contractors, grocers, printers, plumbers, welders, electricians, and more!
LET’S MAKE THE SEASON MERRY AND BRIGHT FOR THE WHOLE COMMUNITY THIS YEAR.

Shopping local means you get personalized service and products. Good customer service can be hard to find at the big chain stores during the holidays due to retail employees often being stretched too thin in their work schedules. Some of the biggest perks of shopping local are the personalized customer service and the unique, hand-crafted items you come across.

Mary, like some of your neighbors, can’t drive anymore. She could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month, please call us to volunteer. We provide training and supplemental insurance.
G–ive- 244-8400 a-Lift lifespanrochester.org DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Providing sense of purpose: Both seniors and younger generations can realize a greater sense of purpose when interacting with one another. That person may be the reason the other one greets the day with a smile. Visits from grandchildren can reduce the liklihood of isolation and depression in older adults. And younger generations can discover the benefits of personal social interaction rather than communicating exclusively through social media apps.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Fighting Boredom
Are we bored yet? Of course we are. We’re staying indoors, especially now that cold weather has arrived, not shopping, not visiting friends, not doing much of anything. Somehow we have to get through this winter, though, and now might be the time to explore things that are new and different to us. Here are some ideas: Change the channel. If you watch the same television news every night, switch to a different one (or better yet, skip a night or two). If you watch the same shows all the time, consider watching something different, even if you think it won’t appeal to you. Step outside. Even though it’s cold outside, wrap up and go outdoors anyway. Don’t try this if there’s ice, of course, but even a few minutes spent walking around outside in fresh air can raise your spirits. Grab your camera. Set up still shots around your house. A fabric background on a table or shelf, a few small statues or trinkets (especially ones from trips you’ve taken) and a lamp for lighting, and you might discover that you have a real eye for photography. Or read a new author, learn to watercolor, take a free online course, watch zoo cams... The idea is to try new things, even given our “stay at home” limitations. As of this writing, most states are seeing big increases in coronavirus levels, even states that were stable with relatively low rates even a few weeks ago. We seniors are, unfortunately, in the high-risk group because of our age, even if we don’t have health concerns. And as of this writing, the U.S. has more active cases of the coronavirus than any other country in the world, including India. It has four times the population but half the deaths that we do. It’s everywhere, and we can’t let down our guard. Stay home, stay safe and look for new things to occupy yourself. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
10am-4pm
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Representatives! We are so appreciative of the Covid-19 relief efforts, including relief for renters and increased unemployment benefits. My partner lost his job at the beginning of the pandemic, and we were able to survive for long enough for him to find a decent job! Let’s see more of this - it stimulates the economy and helps your constituents. We wouldn’t mind some relief on healthcare costs, and we stand with our home owning neighbors. Let’s keep the momentum going!
3 Legged Pig Thank you to the gentleman who bought our family dinner at the 3 Legged Pig. My husband, twins and I sincerely appreciated your thoughtful gesture. Our dinner was delicious. Thank you!
No cell phones at gas stations! How many times do we have to wait until inconsiderate people move, either before or after pumping gas? There are plenty of parking spots at all gas stations. How about being considerate and moving to one of these spots? I know your call is super important and can’t wait, but please let others pump their gas, too.
Apparently, he heard me because he smirked, and said, “Oh, your trying to get away from me!” I want you to know that the young woman at the cash register later apologized to me for your rude behavior. I went back to the line I was originally in. She thought you were rude and didn’t know where you came from. You seemed to be ping ponging from one register to another with the two older women. Shame on you!
Rude man It was Tuesday the 10th. I was in line, and when I went to put my groceries down, the cash register person said I would have to wait. Out of nowhere, a man says, “We need our space.” We weren’t even talking to him, and he butts in. I got out of line and went to the next line, only to see him there helping another woman. I said, “I was trying to get away from him.” GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Disappointed Working Election Day is something I’d never do again. Not only did we work from 5AM - 10PM, we were not allowed to leave the building. Not one person from the Town Board, or any other Town Authority Figure, came by and asked us if we needed anything, not coffee or maybe some water perhaps. How about a Thank

You? Nothing. On top of that, some people that came in to vote actually complained about social distancing. To the Town Board and those who were rude, try being kind; it makes the world a nicer place. Vandals A huge “Thank You” to the vandals who have destroyed over a dozen Pickleball paddles that were in our “Honor Box” at the Pickleball Complex in [local town]. These same individuals also broke into another box that had a portable net for an additional court and stole it. They then threw pickleballs and more broken paddles all over the property! Please know that your behavior has taken away from those that wanted to learn about this growing recreational activity and now will have to do without as you have spoiled their fun!

Yields 11 servings For pork: 2 teaspoons expeller-pressed grapeseed or canola oil 3.15 pounds Boston butt, cut into 3 pieces along natural muscle separation, trimmed of surface fat 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup vermouth, rice wine or dry sherry 2 1/2 cups thinly sliced red cabbage 1 small onion, sliced (about 1 cup) 3 tablespoons molasses (or honey) 2 tablespoons reduced sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons minced garlic 2 tablespoons minced ginger 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds For cucumbers: 1 tablespoon honey 1/8 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons rice vinegar 2 large cucumbers, peeled, cut in half lengthwise, seeded with a spoon, thinly sliced 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper To assemble: 11 soft whole-wheat hamburger buns 2 3/4 cups mungbean sprouts To make the pork: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the oil. Season the pork on all sides with salt and pepper. When oil begins to shimmer, add pork and brown on all sides, about 4 minutes per side. Add browned pork to a slow cooker. Off of the heat, add the vermouth and then place on low heat, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon. Add contents of the skillet to the slow cooker, along with cabbage, onion, molasses, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and sesame seeds. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour; then reduce heat to low and cook for 4 hours (alternatively, cook the pork on low for the entire duration, 6 to 7 hours). To make the cucumbers: One hour before serving, in a medium bowl, stir and dissolve the honey and salt into the rice vinegar and then add the cucumbers and pepper. Chill.

USES FOR FALLEN LEAVES Gather a few of the best-looking leaves and preserve them. Use an iron on a low setting and press leaves between two pieces of waxed paper until the waxed paper seals together. Or use clear contact paper to achieve the same effect.
FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

CBD Recommendation Awaits More Research ---
3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a friend whose daughter has an egg allergy. She said her daughter will break out in a rash if she eats anything that even has trace amounts of egg in it. Another friend of hers told her to use CBD oil to prevent reactions, but I am skeptical. I cannot find anything credible to support the claim. What are your thoughts? -- E.B.P. ANSWER: Almost every day I hear another claim that cannabidiol, the major nonpsychoactive component of cannabis, is effective for some medical condition. Unfortunately, the evidence of effectiveness of CBD is very limited. The sole Food and Drug Administration indication for CBD is for the treatment of two uncommon childhood seizures: Dravet syndrome and LennoxGastaut syndrome. There is preliminary evidence that CBD may be useful for anxiety disorders, some types of sleep disorders and chronic pain. There is active research on other conditions, including asthma, multiple sclerosis and contact dermatitis. I believe it is likely that CBD will be proven effective for other conditions, but until there is better evidence of effectiveness, I cannot make a recommendation to use CBD (outside of the two forms of childhood epilepsy for which it is indicated). Although there are laws in all 50 states legalizing CBD, the federal government’s position is still that cannabis extracts are Schedule I controlled substances, although they do not seem to be enforcing action against CBD at present. Unfortunately, independent laboratory analysis of available CBD products show that about a quarter of them have less CBD than advertised, and another quarter contained the psychoactive component THC. For food allergies, I would recommend strongly against using any unproven treatment. Egg allergies have a broad range of severity in children, from mild rash to life-threatening airway swelling and anaphylaxis. Although many children outgrow egg allergies, your friend should listen to her daughter’s doctor, not her CBD-supporting friend.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This summer, when we thought the pandemic was easing up, my husband and I made plans to visit his family in Georgia for Thanksgiving. Now, we’ve canceled those plans due to the new wave of infections. I was quite sad about it for a while, but I realized that this is an opportunity to spend time with our pets, something we rarely get to do during a busy holiday. For the first time in a decade, I will not be boarding our two Golden Retrievers, Arlo and Woody, so we can fly south to visit my mother-in-law, who’s allergic to pets. Our two cats, Jinx and Star, won’t have to stay at my friend’s house across town. Our house will not be filled with visitors and guests in the days after Thanksgiving. The annual post-Thanksgiving cookout that my husband hosts the weekend afterward is canceled, as well. Instead, we’ll be snuggled up on the sofa, with our dear pets all around. We’ll visit with friends and relatives on FaceTime and Zoom. I realize that for the first time, instead of dreading the holiday season with all of the stress of catering to family and friends, we will be focusing on simple joys. I am thankful for that. These are difficult times, but in the midst of it all, we can stop and just hug our pets and feel love and joy. I hope your readers feel the same way. -- Carol M., Canton, Ohio DEAR CAROL: You’ve encapsulated just how I feel about the holidays this year. Thank you for sharing it with us, and Happy Thanksgiving to all. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “At a home center recently, I saw a zip-up bag to store artificial Christmas trees in. This bag looked like luggage, with wheels on one end. I have purchased two, and I use them under my bed to store off-season clothes. I can pull the handle and they wheel right out, and I no longer have to get down on the ground and tug them out as I used to do. It’s a back saver.” -- I.W. via email * If you get a scratch in a white enamel sink or other white enamel surface, try touching it up with white fingernail polish. * “Try soaking an ink stain in rubbing alcohol for a few minutes before putting the garment in the wash.” (Test first on a scrap.) -- B.D. in Virginia * “If you have a picture frame that just won’t stay straight, cut the eraser tip off of a pencil and glue the flat (not the domed) side to the back of your frame at the bottom. For stubborn frames, use one at each corner. Then re-hang. Once you situate it on the wall, the erasers keep the frame from slipping to either side. It works great.” -- R.I. in California * Don’t just move dust around with that feather duster. Reserve it for dusting delicate items in a designated space (outdoors, preferably). Get a microfiber cleaning cloth instead. It catches dust and holds it. * To make your own special flavor of coffee creamer, use a pint of fat-free or low-fat half and half and add the extract or spices of your choice. Some ideas: peppermint extract, chocolate syrup, almond extract, cinnamon, nutmeg or vanilla extract.

Ronald G. Faugh November 17, 2020 Rush, NY: November 15, 2020 at age 72 years. Ron was born on October 7, 1948 in Rochester, NY to the late Leslie and Victoria (Kucharski) Faugh. Survived by his wife of 51 years, Sally (Goff ) Faugh and children, Jeffrey Faugh (Beth Stanton) and Stacey Faugh both of Avon; grandchildren, Victoria Faugh, Morgan (Zack) Merica, and Bryce Stanton; brother Robert (Linda) Faugh; sister-in-law Gail Moynihan; and many nephews, cousins, and friends. Ronald was a 1967 Rush-Henrietta graduate. During high school and after, Ron worked for the Bourough’s Corporation as a “Pressman’s Helper.” Ron was drafted into the United States Army and served his country honorably between 1969 and 1971. In March of 1969, he and his wife Sally were married. Soon after his discharge, he began working for the Rochester Fire Department. Ron worked for thirty-two plus years before retiring from the Rochester Fire Department in June 2003, at the rank of Fire Captain/Station Commander. During his time with RFD, Ron helped lead the department’s fire academy, arson investigation, and communications units, as well as serving as the RFD Health and Safety Officer. Under his leadership, the crew he oversaw received the department’s Outstanding Service Award for three consecutive years.
MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed.
Ron was much more than just a firefighter. He spent many years sharing his experience, knowledge, and passion with others in a variety of ways. Ron served as a Monroe County Fire Instructor, New York State Fire Instructor, and Cornell University Farm Medic Instructor. Ron also traveled around the United States teaching the “TEAM Command” concept as a Public Safety Critical Incident Management Instructor. Prior to and while working for the Rochester Fire Department, Ron committed himself to volunteering in his community. Ron was a 52 year member of the Rush Volunteer Fire Department. Ron had held each rank as he climbed the ladder within the organization. His volunteer work included time spent as Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, and Chief of the Department. In addition, he served as a member of the Rush Fire Department Board of Directors and Town of Rush Board of Fire Commissioners. Ron’s civic-minded service also included time well spent as a member of the Rush Zoning Board, Assistant Director of the Town of Rush Civil Defense, and Assistant Fire Marshal for the Town of Lima. His impressive volunteer service was recognized with a Presidential Point of Light Award from President George H. W. Bush. That distinction was given in recognition of his work helping inner-city youth consider a career as a firefighter. Ron’s public service will be sorely missed but his sense of community service does live on in his children and grandchildren. Family and friends may call on Saturday, November 21st, from 1-5pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY. Ron’s Memorial Service, with military honors, will be held privately on Sunday at the Rush United Methodist Church, Rush, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the School of the Holy Childhood, 100 Groton Parkway, Rochester, NY 14623 or a charity of your own choice.
Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater.
To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 346-5401
Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Don’t Give this Thanksgiving an ‘F’
Give It 7 of Them Instead! BY AMANDA K. DUDEK
I
t is an understatement to say this has been quite the year: unpredictable, isolating, economically challenging and even frightening at times. The lengthy, divided presidential election process has done little to ease the heightened stress many of us have experienced for months. But before expecting to give a failing grade to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, consider these 7 blessings almost all of us have in common... even in 2020! Food – One of the first things that leaps to mind when Thanksgiving is mentioned is food, abundant, mouth-watering goodies often rooted in family recipes. Traditional foods are front and center: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, squash, green beans, cranberry sauce, and of course, pumpkin pie. These foods are part of the Finger Lakes heritage, as well, particularly if you use cornbread stuffing. Corn, beans, and squash are the Three Sisters of the Iroquois whose confederacy included this region. Whether your Thanksgiving includes these classic foods or other favorite family dishes, breaking bread together with the whole family is arguably one of the best things about this holiday. Faith – The Pilgrims, who celebrated the first Thanksgiving alongside Native Americans, came to North America for many reasons, one of which was to worship God freely. Thanksgiving has come to represent a celebration of faith and the freedom we have to enjoy it. As a multicultural melting pot, the United States welcomes people of all beliefs, religions, and creeds. For many, the right to honor one’s deeply-held beliefs is definitely a reason to give thanks. Finger Lakes – It goes by many names: the Finger Lakes Region, Central & Western NY, the Devil’s Freezer... okay, I kind of made up that last one! Still, we undoubtedly live in one of the most beautiful and lush parts of the country. It beckons with rolling green hills, temperate valleys, several clear lakes, and rich agricultural areas which include apple orchards, a wide variety of stone fruits, and one of the best viticulture areas in the world. While it’s true our winters can be fairly cold, our spring and autumn seasons are colorful masterpieces, and our summers are warm, sunny and best enjoyed lakeside. As the blazing hues of autumn frame bountiful fields ready for harvest, it is easy to see why living in the Finger Lakes so often finds a place on our gratitude lists. Football – It’s a familiar sight: the family watching football, cheering for their preferred team on Thanksgiving afternoon, munching finger foods and shouting at the television as the smells of the upcoming holiday feast waft their way through the house. A spirit of healthy competition and athleticism prevails, and if your family is anything like mine, sides are quickly chosen, heightening the excitement. Why do we do it? It’s tradition. Besides, if you love football, any day is a good day for a game! Freedom – Although the Pilgrims’ arrival on North American shores generates mixed feelings, many acknowledge that these settlers were seeking greater freedom: a value many Americans still hold dear today. Little could they have imagined that more than 100 years later, the United States, arguably one of the freest nations in the world, would be birthed on these very shores. The price of such freedom is the division caused by a kaleidoscope of opinions, but

are we really more divided than ever before? While our disagreements may be more visible thanks to information technology and social media, we have yet to take up arms against each other to the tune of 750,000 lives, the number of Civil War casualties estimated in a 2012 New York Times article. Many of us see room for improvement, and we have the freedom to voice our concerns and unite for change. Some sadly resort to violence, but the fact that the majority of us, as unique people with inherently different points-of-view, continue to seek change peacefully is certainly something to be grateful for. Forgiveness – Tempers flared all too often leading up to this year’s elections, and emotions ran high. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to extend forgiveness to those you love, election related or not. Gathering together for a sumptuous meal, giving thanks over shared traditions, reliving good memories and making new ones, and taking time out of our busy lives to reconnect with family are all wonderful reasons to extend the olive branch, whether it’s across the aisle or across the table. Family – If you’re thinking we saved the best for last, you’re right! Food, faith, the Finger Lakes, football, freedom and even forgiveness are best enjoyed with those you love. Although there are still COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings, we’ve found unconventional ways to connect with family this Thanksgiving. Consider inviting family members to participate in family traditions virtually when possible. Don’t forget to reach out to elderly family members, who have typically been the most isolated throughout this pandemic. Looking for a little interactive Thanksgiving fun? Try a word cloud generator like the one offered by Poll Everywhere. After posting a question like, “What are three things you are most thankful for this Thanksgiving?” invite your family members to respond. Poll Everywhere will create a beautiful word cloud with their responses. The largest words will be those mentioned most often, resulting in an eye-catching mosaic of your family values. Have a favorite Thanksgiving tradition or gratitude item we missed? Send it to us at hometown@gvpennysaver.com. We would love to share your thankful thoughts in our Positive Vibes for other readers to enjoy!

Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK Change your hours. When possible, explore flex time with your employer. Getting to work before everyone, or coming in later and staying after traditional hours can lead to greater productivity. There will be fewer distractions and less rush-hour traffic, and you can reap a greater sense of accomplishment. Consider working a weekend day and taking off during the week. Then you’ll have the added benefit of getting personal tasks done while others are at work.

Allow employees to telecommute. Based on an analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey conducted by GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com, a typical business would save $11,000 per person per year if it allowed its employees to work from home just half the time. Those cost-savings can be traced to numerous factors, and lower utility costs in the office as well as the need for less office space are among them.

Save Money, have a perfect lawn all year Over 10 Models to Choose from including 435x AWD
Husqvarna’s Automower© is a whole new style of lawn care! With traditional mowing, your lawn grows tall before cut off all at once. By contrast, Auotmower© is a mulching mower that clips just a little grass at a time, frequently. The result is a lawn that’s always picture-perfect and fertilized naturally by tiny, mulched clippings. And don’t worry about Automower© missing a spot-the unit changes its pattern according to a programmed schedule. Obstacles, tight spaces and slopes are no sweat. Automower© works in the rain too!
