FACTORS THAT IMPACT AUTO INSURANCE PREMIUMS Auto insurance rates vary from person to person, even though it may seem like the offerings are the same. But no two drivers are the same, and certain factors may be affecting drivers’ auto insurance premiums without the motorists even realizing it. Recognizing which situations can increase or lower costs can help drivers get the best rates and coverage needed. Although it can be tempting to reduce the price of insurance by choosing lower amounts of coverage, there are other ways to make insurance more affordable. • Move. Insurers typically look at where a person lives when calculating rates. Those people who live in highly populated, urban areas likely will have higher premiums than others who live in more rural towns. That’s because greater population density often translates into more people on the road - and a greater chance for insurance claims due to fender benders or theft. By moving, a person may be able to cut rates. • Gender and age are factors. One can’t step into a time machine, but it’s helpful to know that growing a little older can lower insurance premiums. The financial advice source Money Crashers say that young men usually incur higher rates than young women because statistically men get into more accidents. However, as a person moves into his or her senior years, the roles reverse. Older women may see higher rates than men the same age. • Keep make and model in mind. The type of vehicle driven can affect insurance premiums. Certain insurance carriers will increase premiums on vehicles that are more susceptible to damage. Flashy sports cars or those that do not score as highly on vehicle safety ratings calculated by industry experts may result in high premiums. Vehicles that are desirable to car thieves also may cost more to insure. Researching vehicles prior to purchase and checking the rates for those cars or trucks with insurance companies can help keep costs low. • Commuters may pay more. Individuals who use a car for business or frequent commuting may pay more than people who drive less because statistically there is a greater risk for an accident, says State Farm. Reducing commute times can lower premiums. • Tie the knot. Insure.com says married couples have been found to be less of a risk to insurance providers statistically than those who are single. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that single drivers were twice as likely to be in an auto accident as married drivers. Combining policies also can help married people save. • Follow the rules of the road. Drivers who have moving violations, drink and drive or engage in otherwise risky behavior behind the wheel may see their rates soar. Insurance companies weigh factors such as driving record, age, locality, and more when assessing premium costs. Drivers have some room to get lower rates by knowing the factors that determine their premiums.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS How else can drivers improve visibility? In addition to replacing headlight bulbs in pairs every two to three years, drivers can take the following proactive measures to reduce the likelihood that their vision will be compromised while on the road. • Replace worn out wiper blades. Wiper blades need to be changed each season or in three-month intervals. Rubber wiper blades can grow brittle rather quickly, potentially compromising driver visibility at times when they need their vision to be as strong as possible, such as when rain or snow is falling. • Clean interior glass and mirrors. Over time, interior glass can develop a film-like buildup that reduces vision and creates hazy reflections from the sun. Smokers may notice such buildup is especially thick in their vehicles. Periodically clean interior glass and mirrors to prevent this film from compromising your vision. • Don’t hang accessories in your vehicle. Fuzzy dice, photos and other items hung on rearview mirrors can prove distracting and block you from seeing the road.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment

Blowout Estate Sale Everything must go! Wadsworth Event Center 1211 W. River Road, Caledonia, NY 14423

February 27-28 • 10am-3pm 50% and up off all remaining merchandise! Heated Building on one floor w/ parking Glass, Furniture, Paintings, Prints, Rugs, Lamps, Designer fabrics, Decorator Items, Ralph Lauren and McKenzie-Childs giftware

Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available. Our life is March weather, savage and serene in one hour. We go forth austere, dedicated, believing in the iron links of Destiny, and will not turn on our heel to save our life: but a book, or a bust, or only the sound of a name, shoots a spark through the nerves, and we suddenly believe in will... ~Ralph Waldo Emerson, Representative Men: Seven Lectures, “IV: Montaigne; Or, the Skeptic,” 1849, published 1850

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Need a quick fix for tarnished brass? Look in your fridge. Ketchup, applied liberally then buffed off, will remove tarnish in a pinch. * Use a sticky note to clean the cracks in your keyboard. First hold it upside down and shake to remove crumbs. You’d be surprised how much comes out. Then run the sticky strip of the note paper between the keys to pick up dust and any other crumbs. * “Many people play drinking games with movies and alcohol, but here’s my drinking game: I work at an ‘office’ job (although we are remote now), and every time I get an email notification, I take a sip or slug of water. It’s got me surprisingly hydrated!” -- P.J. in Florida * If your marker is nearing the end of its life, you might revive it by setting it tip down in a little bit of rubbing alcohol. * “Schedule important doctor’s checkups, like your annual physical and dental cleanings, in the same month each year so you will know when they are coming up. I use my birth month. My mom always has hers done in February.” -- E.D. in Massachusetts * Use a cotton swab to clean out the tips of your earbuds!

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles COVID Isolation Affects Our Mental Health, Too COVID hits seniors hard. Many of us have underlying medical conditions that make a diagnosis of COVID very risky in terms of recovery. But the lockdown from the pandemic has another risky side: mental health disorders. Whether we’re living at home, in a retirement center or a care facility, our isolation has been very stressful. A survey conducted in June concluded that seniors were less negatively affected than other age groups when it comes to mental health. They say we have better emotional regulation, which means we don’t react as strongly to negative events. But the study was done when we were only a few months into this new way of living. (Even the study mentions that as a caveat.) Now eight more months have passed. Holidays without family. Missed doctor appointments. We’ve had to take a crash course in online chat to be able to see and talk to friends and family. Our regular meetings and social outings are canceled. The news has been a daily onslaught of the increasing numbers of positive cases and deaths. A more recent study from Portugal unearthed the truth, however. After reviewing 41 pieces of research from around the world, scientists concluded that “anxiety, depression, poor sleep quality and physical inactivity” have been prevalent among seniors during our lockdowns. If you’re struggling, ask for help. In some communities, hotlines have opened up to deal with this kind of stress. Look online for “mental health hotline” and your state. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention set up a web page in December. Search online for “CDC Coping with Stress” and look at all the offerings on the page. There is a national helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357). Or you can just pick up the phone and dial 211. It’s a referral for community services. Stay safe. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On March 2, 1904, Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, the author and illustrator of such beloved children’s books as “The Cat in the Hat,” is born in Springfield, Massachusetts. Geisel used his middle name (which was also his mother’s maiden name) as his pen name. * On March 4, 1918, the first cases of the deadly Spanish flu pandemic are reported in soldiers at Fort Riley, Kansas. The virus soon traveled to Europe with U.S. soldiers heading to aid the Allies in France. The flu would eventually kill 20 million to 50 million people around the world. * On March 7, 1923, The New Republic publishes Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” which begins with the famous line “Whose woods these are, I think I know.”

8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: For some reason this winter, my new house has been invaded by spiders. They are building webs in every corner of the house and basement, and every day I’m knocking down another web with my broom. I’m worried about my cat, “Jameson,” being bitten by a spider. What do I do if this happens? Janine S., via email

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Invading Spiders Endanger Cat

Page 17

DEAR JANIE: I’m a huge fan of spiders, because they are one of nature’s best pest control services, trapping and disposing of many other tiny critters. They probably have much more to fear from Jameson than the other way around, because housecats see spiders as interesting prey. Still, a spider invasion is not much fun to deal with. Look for something that is attracting spiders to your home. Do you have wood or leaves piled up against the foundation? Are there cracks in the foundation? Is your basement or attic damp? How clean are your HVAC vents and ductwork? Addressing the source of the problem can cut down quite a bit on the number of spiders invading your house. As for Jameson being bitten by a spider -- if you are concerned, do the same thing you would do when checking for evidence of fleas or ticks. Every evening put Jameson on your lap and run your hand over his coat, backwards. This lifts the hair away so you can see his skin. A spider bite on a cat will look similar to a spider bite on a human. If you do see a spider bite on Jameson, the best thing to do is observe. If he is behaving normally, not distressed or pawing/licking the bite, he’s probably fine. If you have any concerns, contact his veterinarian. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

WAYS TO IM PROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY ALL YEAR LONG

CLEANING

As w inter w ears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold w eather climates to experience some cabin fever. W inter w eather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear. In addition to contributing to cabin fever, w inter w eather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. W hile air pollution is something most often associated w ith densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long w inters w hen w indow s are often closed for months at a time. Though open w indow s in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are w ays to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of w hich season it happens to be.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Experience: A trial and error approach can work with various projects and problems. But applying such an approach to home improvement projects is risky and potentially dangerous, not to mention costly. Experienced professional contractors with strong track records (seek recommendations from friends or neighbors) won’t have to go through trial and error and are therefore more likely than DIYers to complete a project on time and on budget.

ICE DAM S PUT HOM ES AT RISK FOR TERM ITES I’s not too soon for homeow ners to begin thinking about all the damage that homes may have sustained from prolonged cold, snow and ice. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w arns that ice dams are one of the most troublesome w inter-related home problems as they can create the perfect environment for termites. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining properly. The melting snow backs up behind this dam and can leak into a home, causing w ater damage to w alls, ceilings, insulation and dryw all and providing enough moisture to attract termites as they begin to emerge at the first signs of spring. Termites are know n as silent destroyers because their constant gnaw ing can go unnoticed until significant structural damage to the home occurs. Even more problematic is that termite property damage, w hich according to NPM A accounts for at least $5 billion each year, is not covered by homeow ners insurance. Depending on the extent of the destruction, homeow ners can be saddled w ith large repair bills. Before the ground w arms, and termite sw arms emerge in search of new structures to feast on, homeow ners should take necessary steps to ensure w inter hasn’t done a number on their homes and left them vulnerable to pest problems in the spring. To prevent ice dams and possible subsequent termite infestations, NPM A offers the follow ing 10 tips: 1. Promptly clear snow off 6. Add insulation to the attic roofs before it freezes and rafters and ceiling. becomes harder to remove. 7. Seal and insulate HVAC ducts. 2. Install snow and ice shields 8. Install chimney flashing to on the roof. prevent leaks. 3. Clean out gutters, and install 9. Seal gaps around electrical gutter guards. cables and vent pipes. 4. Cover an attic or house fan 10. Install eave and soffit vents to during w inter. circulate cold air. 5. Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles.

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook from cold to cozy with a few simple DIY solutions. The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can be inadequate in older homes. Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down. December days were brief and chill, The winds of March were wild and drear, And, nearing and receding still,

But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Livonia’s Sent by Ravens Fights Food Insecurity BY A SENT BY RAVENS VOLUNTEER

W

hen I retired, I was told to wait a year before making any changes or big decisions. It only took two months to make the decision to volunteer with my local food pantry. I found out about Sent by Ravens (SBR) Food Pantry thanks to one of my neighbors, Steve, who already volunteered there. It was (and still is) located in Livonia, which was exactly what I wanted since it meant no long-distance drives, especially during the winter. It was also close enough to home that I could help out if an emergency food delivery were necessary. Unsure of what I would find when I reported on my first Saturday morning, I came prepared with an open mind and a hopeful sense of giving and helpfulness. That day turned out to be a FoodLink Saturday, which meant that a truckload of food from FoodLink would arrive to fill tables with food for the families in need. I was so impressed with the organization and cooperation between the FoodLink and the SBR volunteers and the way in which I was welcomed wholeheartedly and sincerely that I decided to continue volunteering. The next Saturday was a regular SBR Food Pantry Saturday. Once again, tables of fresh produce, shelf stable products, and dairy items were set up for arriving families. Tables were also set up for families to sit and have a cup of coffee or juice and a pastry. I could tell that some of our seniors appreciated not being rushed through a line. They enjoyed being given the time to sit and chat with another neighbor or even to meet someone new. Many grateful patrons were also excited about trying a new vegetable they hadn’t tried before as well as just being able to put milk on the table for another week. I began looking forward to my Saturday mornings. After all, it was only one day each week that I had to get up early compared to the five days when I had been working. I knew I could handle this! Then came COVID-19.

Sent by Ravens volunteers set up food pantry tables!

from the Livonia Central School District arrived to volunteer, directing traffic even in the cold and the rain. Our SBR volunteers filled the trunks of cars with the food that would normally be picked up inside. Our volunteers also assisted with the FoodLink Mobile Pantries which took place at the Livonia High School. As the pandemic continues, we have been making patron appointments each Saturday from 9:00AM to 11:00AM. As patrons arrive, several from surrounding towns, they check in and a shopping cart of food is brought to the door for pick up. Each individual then brings the cart to their car to unload it before returning the cart to our door. Our volunteers are always ready to assist seniors who are unable to lift boxes, helping them place the food safely into their cars. We sanitize each cart before and after use. Masks are worn by all, and hand sanitizer is available for use at check in and check out. “Our” custodian, Cosmo, works diligently each Saturday to keep our space sanitized for us. We attempt to update the process to meet current guidelines each week, ensuring everyone is kept as safe as possible. I feel very blessed by my decision to volunteer with SBR. I am grateful I found such a wonderful group of individuals to work with each Saturday. Even in retirement, SBR has helped me to feel useful. For more information or to schedule an appointment with SBR, call 585-481-5942. Enjoy this article? This SBR volunteer stands next to a bounty of food for those in need!

At the SBR, we did not want to close our doors. Still, changes needed to be made so that both guests and volunteers could remain safe. Our director, Anne, was up to the task. Thankfully, we were and are located in the Connell Building at 40 Spring Street in Livonia, a wonderful space with access to refrigeration and freezers as well as a cafeteria, not to mention local support. We were and are so grateful to Matthew Cole, Superintendent of Livonia Central Schools, as well as the Livonia School Board for all of their support, assistance, and help meting the regulations imposed during this crisis. We had many weeks of outside drive-thru food pantries, starting last March. Teachers, coaches, administrators and food personnel

CT Scan Unlikely to Miss Advanced Lung Cancer ---

Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible for X-rays and a CT scan to miss advanced lung cancer? My brother worked two days before he died. He went to the hospital, was admitted to hospice and died the next day. I wonder if he knew at least a year ago, but didn’t tell anyone. He said his scans showed pneumonia. His son was called to the hospital and spent the day with him until he died. During his last day, my brother told him that he had lung cancer and that it was not diagnosed earlier. -- N.W. ANSWER: I am very sorry about your brother. Lung cancer, especially early lung cancer, is often missed on a regular chest X-ray. Pneumonia can accompany early lung cancer, and the pneumonia can hide the cancerous mass, but experienced radiologists should be able to see something. Also, experienced clinicians should check an X-ray weeks after a pneumonia to be sure there is no cancer in a person at risk, such as a current or former smoker. Advanced lung cancer is only very rarely missed on X-ray, and should essentially never be missed on a CT scan. While I can’t say it’s impossible, it’s much more likely that a year ago he was told that he had lung cancer and did not say anything, perhaps to spare his family’s feelings, or perhaps he didn’t want the sympathy and attention that accompany a diagnosis such as advanced lung cancer. DEAR DR. ROACH: What does a person do when symptoms are vague and hard to explain? I am an 82-year-old woman. I started feeling discomfort in one breast about three weeks ago. It felt like irritation from a bra. I did all the things I thought I should, and three weeks later the symptoms are the same or slightly worse. Nothing looks or feels different when I touch it. Do I see my primary doctor (he’s never seen me naked), or find a gynecologist? How do I present this issue? I feel like a fool. -- V.B. ANSWER: Both clinicians should be able to appropriately evaluate this concern. You should go to whoever you are more comfortable seeing. What you should not do is ignore it. In your particular case, it’s unlikely that your symptoms are because of something serious. Breast discomfort is common and only rarely due to breast cancer, which is what you must surely be concerned about. You should NEVER stop yourself from seeing your doctor for fear of not being taken seriously. Primary doctors like me and gynecologists are very familiar with women coming in with breast symptoms, and we take them seriously. Clinicians know how justifiably concerned women are about breast cancer. Most often, a woman can be reassured with a careful history and physical exam; other times, a mammogram or ultrasound may be ordered. You don’t want to regret missing that visit to the doctor. It is often said that the only foolish question is the one that is not asked. This situation is analogous: It would be foolish for you not to go. While the overwhelming likelihood is that you will be reassured, in the unlikely event there is something wrong it’s far better to know about it earlier than later. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GLUTEN-FREE IS MORE THAN A TREND When someone with celiac disease eats gluten the body mounts an immune system response that attacks the villi, which are small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine. The villi, when damaged, cannot properly absorb nutrients from food. Untreated celiac disease also may lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis. The intestinal damage from eating gluten often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating, and anemia, and can lead to serious complications. Following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing. More companies are producing glutenfree foods and stores are carrying them in greater numbers. In addition, there are a number of new baking flours available that provide alternatives to traditional wheat-based formulas. People with celiac disease or gluten intolerances can use these specially designed flours to make homemade items. Certain flours also may be billed as one-to-one alternatives, meaning they can be substituted for traditional flour in recipes without adjusting the measurements.

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT A desire to live a healthy, active life compels many people to include exercise in their daily routines. Numerous studies have shown that regular workouts that include a combination of strength training and cardiovascular exercise can make bodies less susceptible to injury while reducing a person’s risk for conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Exercising is most effective when it’s part of a daily routine, but that routine can be derailed if men and women are not taking the appropriate measures to avoid injury while working out. While even professional athletes succumb to injury from time to time, there are steps everyone can take to avoid injury when working out.

Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Use proper form when exercising. Improper form can lead to injury and/or muscle fatigue. Men and women who cannot adhere to proper form when working out may need to reduce the amount of weight they’re lifting. As activities are performed using proper form, people may find they’re building muscle without growing fatigued. As workouts progress, weight can be added.

Variety is the spice of life when it comes to protein sources. Eat different foods to ensure the body gets all of the nutrients it requires.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.
