VISION GREATLY AFFECTS DRIVING ABILITY Driving is a multisensory experience that requires careful coordination and mastery of a wide array of skills. Understanding the rules of the road and having sufficient practice are only part of the equation. Being able to see the road and react to obstacles, signage and more is crucial. Drivers should not downplay the importance of visual acuity when they turn their ignition keys. Acceptable vision is involved in all components of driving. Motor vehicle operators need to have clear vision to read gauges and operate the controls of the car. Distance vision also is essential to identifying road hazards and seeing other cars on the road. The health resource All About Vision says aging and visual changes at any age can affect a person’s ability to see moving objects while one is in motion - as is the case while driving a car or truck. In addition, changes in peripheral vision can increase blind spots while driving and affect reaction time. Many motor vehicle agency vision tests do not take into consideration all of the factors that can impact vision while driving. Seeking care for visual problems and changing driving habits when necessary can help people stay safe on the road.

Keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full at all times during the winter to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing.

Clean the interior glass and mirrors. Dirty interior glass and mirrors make it difficult for drivers to see fellow motorists, so make removing any film buildup on such surfaces part of your routine vehicle maintenan ce.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY St. Patrick’s Day celebrants who are not of Irish descent and/or those who have never visited Ireland may not know it, but the live music they may hear when entering a pub on St. Patrick’s Day is an integral part of the fabric of Irish culture. An Irish Seisiún typically finds a group of musicians gathered in a pub to play traditional Irish music, oftentimes while seated at a table among their audience. While many pubs reserve stage areas for their musicians on St. Patrick’s Day, the spirit of seisiún is still present, as musicians often interact with the audience.

ENJOY IRISH COFFEE THIS ST. PATRICK’S DAY St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with many things, most notably the jovial atmosphere of the various events celebrating both the life of St. Patrick and Irish culture. New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are known for the Big Apple’s impressive parade up Fifth Avenue, while few who have partaken of Patty’s Day festivities in Chicago can forget the green Chicago River. Celebrations may vary from city to city, but it’s a good bet that celebrants will hear some traditional Irish music, enjoy a pint of Guinness and/or join the masses wearing green wherever they end up this St. Patrick’s Day. Drinking Irish coffee is another St. Patrick’s Day tradition many revelers enjoy. Few may indulge in Irish coffee throughout the year, but this special concoction can be a great way to warm up after attending a St. Patrick’s Day parade in the often chilly March temperatures. Cocktails made with coffee date back quite far, but Irish coffee does not have to go back too far to trace its history. In the mid-20th century, chef Joe Sheridan was working in Foynes, County Limerick when a group of United States-bound travelers found themselves stranded due to inclement weather that grounded their plane. Whether he was trying to warm them up or wake them up after their ordeal, Sheridan served the passengers coffee with a little bit of Irish whiskey mixed in. When the group inquired as to what they were drinking, Sheridan reportedly told them, “that’s Irish coffee.” GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Convenient Brighton location

Deep Vein Thrombosis Usually Due to Surgery ---

200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester

Patient Focused • Family Friendly Restorative Dentistry

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 47-year-old woman. Five years ago, I developed a blood clot in my left leg after fracturing my ankle and being immobilized for several months. I was put on a blood thinner, and my ankle healed. Recently that leg started swelling again, and I went for an ultrasound. I was told that I have a chronic DVT, but that I don’t need blood thinners. Why do I not need a blood thinner now when I did before? What does “chronic” mean? Why am I getting swelling again five years after the first clot? -- L.S.B. ANSWER: Blood clots can happen in veins or arteries, but the type that happen due to surgery and immobilization are almost always in the vein. That’s the “V” in “DVT,” which stands for “deep vein thrombosis.” A brand-new blood clot has a high risk of propagating further up the vein, and also of breaking off and traveling through the vein into the heart. Most often, the clot will go on into the lungs, then called a “pulmonary embolus.” But in the rare case, the clot can go through a patent foramen ovale, which is sometimes called a hole in the heart, and cause a stroke. Because of the risk of life-threatening complications, acute DVTs are treated with anticoagulants, such as warfarin (Coumadin) or apixaban (Eliquis). This stabilizes the clot, and after a week or two the risk of propagation or embolization becomes much lower. Most people are treated for at least three months for maximum benefit. Treatment does not dissolve the clot, and a follow-up ultrasound will detail changes that show the clot is no longer acute, hence “chronic.” The vein itself is scarred and damaged, and never returns to normal. “Chronic DVT” isn’t the best term, since it confuses many, both patients and physicians alike. I prefer scarred, and some experts use “chronic luminal changes” to differentiate it from an acute clot. Whatever it is called, it may still be symptomatic. Most people with a history of a large clot in one leg will notice that leg swells more than the other in heat or with a large salt load. Even so, anticoagulant treatment is neither necessary nor helpful. Effective treatment for swelling associated with previous DVT includes salt restriction, compression stockings and leg elevation several times during the day. People with more severe symptoms that do not respond to conservative management may benefit from more aggressive therapies, such as placement of a metal stent to let the blood flow better through the damaged area.

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Here Are 2 New Scams to Watch Out For They never stop. Scammers are continually busy, and so must we be to stay one step ahead of them. Here are two more scams they’re trying to foist on us. If you’re still working and receive W-2 or 1099 forms, look them over very carefully. If it’s a 1099-G, that’s for unemployment benefits. Did you receive those benefits? If not, it means that a scammer has used your identity to collect benefits. Those 1099-G forms go to the IRS, and that income is taxable. Contact the unemployment office that issued the 1099-G and have them send a corrected form showing zero unemployment income. If you can’t get the corrected form in time, file your taxes without using that 1099-G dollar amount and enclose a note saying you didn’t receive unemployment benefits. The IRS is well aware of this problem. Then send for your credit report, check it and put a freeze on your credit. In another new scam, if you do an online search for a big box store and the first result on the list says “Ad” in front of the store name, don’t click it. This scam is especially sneaky because if you click on the “Ad” link, you’ll initially go to a page that looks very real. It isn’t. Clicking it will take you to a site that may freeze your screen ... and provide you a handy phone number to call to have the problem fixed. The person at the other end is a scammer who will ask for permission to access your computer remotely. If you allow it, he’ll put a bug in your computer that locks everything up, and you’ll have to pay to get it released. Instead of doing a search, type in the Internet address of the store you want (call them if you’re not sure what it is) and go directly there.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DON’T MISTAKE A SHAMROCK FOR A CLOVER All shamrocks are clovers, but not all clovers are shamrocks. The home and garden resource The Spruce indicates that the term “shamrock” comes from the Gaelic word seamrog, meaning “little clover.” There is no consensus as to which species of clover is the true shamrock. However, many botanists agree that the white clover (Trifolium repens) is the shamrock. However, the lesser trefoil, or hop clover, the black medick and red clover all can be contenders. Four-leafed clovers of any variety are not shamrocks and should not be portrayed as such. That is because the shamrock is a three-leafed sprout that was believed to be utilized by St. Patrick to demonstrate the principle behind the Holy Trinity. St. Patrick, pointing to the three leaflets united by a common stalk, used this visual analogy to spell out the mystery of Christianity’s doctrine of three entities making up one Lord: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Therefore, for all of the purported good luck finding a four-leaf clover may bring - based on mythology imparted by ancient Celts called Druids - it cannot be passed off as a shamrock.

* “When thickening soup, don’t overlook instant mashed potato mix. It’s perfect for making a thin broth into a nice, thick stew sauce, and it’s pretty cheap. It only takes a couple of tablespoons.” -- I.F. in Utah * “Cut kitchen sponges into smaller pieces. They clean as well as a larger sponge, and you can dispose of the smaller pieces when they get yucky.” -- O.C. in Michigan

PAW’S CORNER

* Don’t forget to clean out your dryer’s lint trap regularly. It can get clogged up, and that can be a fire hazard. Set a reminder on your phone to vacuum it out once a month.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love hiking with my Border Collie mix, “Jess.” Even in the dead of winter, we are out in the snow. Jess carries her own supplies in saddlebags sized just for her. The problem is, my girlfriend keeps saying it’s dangerous for Jess to be out with me in the wintertime. That she could get hypothermia, or injure her paws on jagged ice and have to be carried out. I really have never had a problem. What’s your take? -– Tim Y., Manchester, New Hampshire

* If you have high boots, you can use this trick to keep them looking good and upright in storage. Simply use 1-liter soda bottles. They can be empty, or you can poke some small holes around the bottom and add a little baking soda, which will keep the boots dry and odor free. * Ficus trees can remove up to 80% formaldehyde in the air. Other great indoor air-cleaning plants include peace lilies, ivies, spider plants and ferns. * “Have you overdyed your hair at home? Try washing your hair with a dandruff shampoo. You may have to repeat it, but dandruff shampoo can sometimes get the extra color out of your hair follicles. Make sure that you condition well afterward.” -- B.R. in Georgia

March, when days are getting long, Let thy growing hours be strong

By Sam Mazzotta

Taking Your Dog for a Winter Hike

DEAR TIM: Each dog is different, and a dog that is outdoors frequently can acclimate as the seasons change. It sounds like Jess is pretty well acclimated to the cold, and you probably keep a close eye on her while on the trail to make sure she’s not shivering or in distress. Hiking is an activity that keeps you both warm, even on snowy days. I do understand your girlfriend’s worries. Much bigger dogs than Jess have suffered hypothermia from spending just a few hours in the backyard, unsupervised. And that term, supervision, does make a difference. Assure your girlfriend that because Jess is with you on the trail, she is under your supervision at all times. If she does get chilly or injures a paw, you’ll know about it right away, and will make sure that Jess is safe and that she’s warm enough. Her saddlebags should carry food, a drinking bowl, a doggy sweater or emergency blanket, and a small first-aid kit to deal with scraped paws and splinters. My advice: Keep hiking and enjoy the time spent with Jess! Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

BREAKING DOWN THE LEPRECHAUN MYTH Some historians believe the myth of the leprechaun has origins in ancient Ireland, when people believed the tiny creatures were among the various inhabitants of fairy forts and fairy rings throughout the Emerald Isle.

Another take on the source of the leprechaun myth is that these tiny creatures were modern incarnations of the Euro-Celtic god Lugh, who was the sun god as well as the patron of arts and crafts.

GREAT SONGS FOR YOUR PADDY’S DAY PARTY “The Broad Majestic Shannon,” The Pogues: This song, from the legendary Celtic punk band’s 1988 album, was inspired by the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, and is sure to invite people to the dance floor with its opening notes. Lead singer Shane MacGowan, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished lyricists of his time, said the song is about an Irishman returning to his home along the Shannon after many years spent in London. That gives the song a somewhat autobiographical tilt, as MacGowan himself spent time living in London and Ireland. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Spread Your Wings with Positive Things - a LIVES Book Project BY MAGGIE FITZGIBBON "I felt good reading the book that my class made for the kids. The students' responses were great; they all loved the book. I really enjoyed working with all the younger students in the elementary school," Kailin said. "My favorite part about being in a class was working with the younger students." "Kailin's reaction was great, she was so pleased to share this book with the first graders. Our class was able to watch via Zoom as she read the book," Schnitter said.

Kailin Footer (center) with Sarah Wilcox’s first grade class at Geneseo Elementary School.

W

hen an idea becomes a reality, it's a win-win! A recent project came about when Marcy Wolcott, LIVES Teaching Assistant, shared an idea for LIVES students to compose and illustrate a book that would feature elementary students. LIVES student Kailin Footer had been interning in Sarah Wilcox's first-grade classroom at Geneseo Elementary School for several months, and when both were approached with the idea, everyone knew it would be welcomed from cover to cover.

Wilcox commented on how the book was received by the students. "Without planning it, some of the animals that the LIVES students picked to write about are some of our favorite classroom animals. When Jack’s name came up in the book as a flamingo it was a fun coincidence. After the story was over, everyone agreed Jack had to wear Pinky (the flamingo) and take a picture with Miss Kailin and the book," Wilcox shared. "Every page she turned had the students hanging on to find out which student would be featured. Even after their names had been read they were just as excited to hear their classmates' names." The LIVES Program incorporates a college course schedule, with student internships, employment training and readiness, and community service opportunities. Kailin's internship in Wilcox's classroom was an example of work experience as both the first-graders and Kailin were the true benefactors.

The LIVES (Learn Independence, Vocational and Educational Skills) Program is a four-year transitional program located on the campus of the State University of New York College at Geneseo in collaboration with the Genesee Valley BOCES. Students, ages 18-21, with intellectual and/or other developmental disabilities, are provided with an inclusive educational community. Due to the pandemic, this school year, this program is set on the Genesee Community College Campus, located in Dansville, New York.

"The first month of school is built around creating a classroom community and building trust - it’s something we as teachers work at every day. Kailin came into our classroom and gained the studentsí trust so quickly and I think it really speaks to her ability to connect with others," Wilcox said.

"We thought this might be a good idea to present to the class and believed that this would be a great way for our class to connect with these first graders. It was a fun project," said John Schnitter, LIVES Instructor.

Schnitter echoed Wilcox's thoughts and also shared how cooperative learning opportunities like these have cumulative effects.

In December 2020, LIVES students began the process of writing the book and creating artwork to correspond with each page. The title of the book is "Spread Your Wings with Positive Things." Each student in Wilcox's class is featured in the book as a different character, some type of animal that has wings, which includes birds, bugs, and flying fish. LIVES students illustrated the book and also wrote the text that corresponds with each drawing.

"Last school year before the pandemic hit, the LIVES students were able to visit classrooms at Geneseo Elementary and read books to small groups of these young students. This laid the groundwork for Kailin's internship. Our LIVES students learned much from this project; how to inspire and bring joy to others," Schnitter said. "It was very meaningful to our LIVES students, and especially Kailin, to witness the students' reactions to the book."

This project took several weeks to create and some LIVES students crafted multiple pages. They sketched out their concept, added some color, and drafted their text. Wolcott typed up the manuscript. LIVES students crafted their pages which were then bound into a book.

The LIVES (Learn Independence, Vocational and Educational Skills) Program is a program of the Genesee Valley BOCES. GV BOCES operates as a Board of Cooperative Educational Services offering shared programs and services to 22 component school districts located in Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston and Steuben counties in New York state.

Wilcox shared how Kailin assisted with the first-grade students. "Kailin volunteered in our classroom for approximately 10 weeks. She took on the role as an aide to me and was a support person for students. She practiced sight words, read books, and helped students cut and glue projects related to reading and phonics. She would mostly work one-onone with students," Wilcox said. Once the book was completed, Kailin made a surprise presentation to the class. "The students knew that we had planned a celebration for Kailin as a thank you for her help. The morning of the presentation, I let students know what was going to be happening, both the students attending school in-person and the remote learners," Wilcox shared. Excitement filled the air in the classroom as Kailin read the book to the in-person and remote first graders. Students waited for her to read each page as they listened for their name to be read.

Our life is March weather, savage and serene in one hour. We go forth austere, dedicated, believing in the iron links of Destiny, and will not turn on our heel to save our life: but a book, or a bust, or only the sound of a name, shoots a spark through the nerves, and we suddenly believe in will... ~Ralph Waldo Emerson, Representative Men: Seven Lectures, “IV: Montaigne; Or, the Skeptic,” 1849, published 1850 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

S E V RA Serving local businesses! ”Nothing happens until a sale is made” is an old adage but so very true. Our Ad Consultants have answered the call (and made a quite a few of their own), to help our customers continue to reach theirs. It’s our mission statement: “Reaching Your Customers,” and thanks to our dedicated sales staff, they’ve met this COVID challenge head on and continue to be essential for our advertisers! Well done! Steve Harrison A big thank you! Thank you so very much to the mother and son who found my driver’s license at Mendon Ponds Park and drove to my house to return it! You went out of your way to deliver it and saved me a lot of anxiety and hassle to

get it replaced. Your efforts are very much appreciated. So glad that there are nice people in the world like you two! COVID Immunization Clinic Thank you Livingston County Department of Health and Office of the Aging for holding a clinic for senior citizens. The clinic was extremely well organized and the shot was painless. Pay it forward I would like to thank the few who reached out recently at my request in search of a bike for rehab during our COVID situation with my COPD. In these rare times, it is good to see that there is still some good left in our communities and our neighbors who help one another.

“Woke” culture only have a simple solution: “Get Woke, Go Broke!” You have no idea what Freedom of Speech and Free Enterprise is all about. They teach misinformation in many educational institutions now. You all have your own brains to use; don’t be like fools following blindly to doomsville! Get the cobwebs out of your heads and start thinking for yourselves and stop listening to the media’s propaganda. You can never truly believe everything you hear. This is me exercising my Freedom of Speech, speech that comes from experience, not believing everything I hear or read. Social media is now more evil and hatefilled than it was originally designed to be. Stop it and start talking in person again. Teacher vacation There is no way teachers are doing their full jobs when schools are barely open. It’s not their fault; they did not close schools. However, the school budget should be drastically reduced along with school tax bills. Don’t worry In response to Let It Go: There is no law or ordinance restricting any type of flag or flags you can fly on your

personal property. The only restriction or rule is that the American flag is the higher flag on the pole. Therefore if we choose to fly a Trump flag it is our right as American citizens. Would you go to someone’s residence to complain they are flying a flag from [another country], which, by the way, are all over in [local town]. Why does this bother you? I am using my first amendment right. Flags To the person ranting about the Trump flags: Leave it alone. If people can still drive cars with Obama and Hillary stickers years after the fact, people can have their flags. Trump supporters can’t have a bumper sticker as the crazies try to run them off the road. Trump flags are on private property. Stop the cancel culture.

Many establishments display the familiar Irish tricolour flag on St. Patrick’s Day, and paradegoers may even wave miniature versions of this significant symbol in support of those marching. This instantly recognizable flag has a rich history. Equal parts green, white and orange, the flag was designed to foster peace in the country that had experienced considerable turmoil due to the divide between the country’s Protestant and Catholic residents. The green in the flag represents the Irish Catholics, while the orange represents the Irish Protestants. The white is a symbol of hope for peace between the two factions. Though Ireland established the tricolour as its national flag in 1921, it first appeared much earlier when Irish national Thomas Francis Meagher unfurled it in 1848. Page 26

BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH ANIMAL TRAINERS Animal trainers can address any type of behavior. According to the Animal Behavior Institute, trainers who work with dogs, cats, parrots, or other companion animals must have a thorough and detailed knowledge of animal behavior. Pet owners who have successfully housebroken puppies in the past may think they can do it again with relative ease, but no two puppies are the same. Techniques that worked with one dog will not necessarily work with another. Trainers recognize this and have an array of techniques within their arsenal, making them capable of addressing and correcting any type of behavior.

March 17 is a special day for people of Irish heritage and other celebrants across the globe. Each year, millions of people pay homage to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, with parades, parties and religious services. Celebrations occur even though many celebrants may know little about this legendary saint. Although St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a festivity filled with clovers, frosty mugs of beer, green clothing, and lively music, the day was once a religious feast day honoring the man many credit with bringing Christianity to Ireland. St. Patrick was born in Britain circa AD 387. Many are surprised to learn he was not Irish. In fact, St. Patrick first spent time in Ireland when he was captured by Irish pagans as a teen and taken to their country as a slave. After six years working as a shepherd, Patrick became familiar with the customs and spirit of the Irish and “found God.” He was able to eventually escape his imprisonment, vowing to one day return to Ireland as a free man. Patrick was schooled at monasteries and was ordained a priest and later became a bishop. Under Pope Celestine I, he was commissioned to become an apostle to Ireland and spread the news of God and Christianity. St. Patrick spent many years evangelizing in the northern half of Ireland and converted thousands of people from paganism to Christianity. According to legend, St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish. Patrick’s efforts to drive out the pagans became an allegory in which he drove “snakes” out of Ireland. Although green has become the primary color of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and green remains widely associated with Ireland, during the 18th century, the Order of St. Patrick, an Anglo-Irish chivalric order, adopted blue as it’s official color. That led to blue being associated with St. Patrick. However, “wearing of the green” eventually fell back into favor, and the color green and an association with St. Patrick’s Day grew during the 19th and 20th centuries. Although St. Patrick’s Day originated as a religious celebration in honor of a man who brought Christianity to Ireland, it has since become a larger representation of Irish pride and culture.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In 1862, the King of Siam offered Abraham Lincoln many elephants on the grounds that a “country as great as the United States should not be without elephants.” President Lincoln politely declined. * “Digging a hole to China” is theoretically possible if you start in Argentina. * A flower that smells like chocolate? Yep, but you’ll have to limit your enjoyment of this dark-red Mexican native to sniffing, as the “cosmos atrosanguineus,” or “chocolate cosmos,” isn’t edible.
