Grateful To the person(s) who paid for my lunch at Canal View Restaurant in Newark on Wednesday, March 4, about 11:00am, thank you! It was very thoughtful and much appreciated, and the lunch was delicious A grateful customer Thank you! While traveling up Rochester Street in Avon, I wasn’t paying attention to my speed.... which I believe was increasing. An Avon police officer was sitting along the street, and upon noticing me, he flashed his lights as a warning. This was much appreciated as I wasn’t way over the speed limit, and driving a minivan, I wasn’t exactly racing! Thank you for the warning as I believe it’s a great way to slow traffic without giving a ticket. Very professional!
Local COVID clinic I took my mom to the Rochester Regional Health Covid mass vaccination site, a drive thru clinic, at Unity Hospital on Long Pond Rd., Gates/ Greece. It was very well organized, and the nursing staff, which they all were, were very friendly and explained the procedure and the necessary paperwork very well. They set up garage-like pole barns to drive in, and you didn't even need to get out of the car, which is excellent for those with mobility issues. The vaccines were well protected to keep them fresh. It took a total of 30 minutes from the time we got there to the time we left, and that includes the time they had us wait after the shot was given to make sure no negative reaction occurred. This should be the example to use for all future mass vaccination sites. We go back in 3 weeks.
Let it go? I wish I could say your rant surprised me. But it was expected. Do you also make the same demands of your fellow Americans when they leave holiday decorations up on their personal property once the holiday is past? The level of control you yearn for is available...just in other countries. Keep hope alive though; [the government] is working diligently to procure the level of personal control you desire. Campaign flags A flag that says 'Vote 2020" with a name is not just a flag. Those flags are 'campaign' flags and are supposed to have been removed within 7 days of said election. Trump lost. Cut out the 'vote 2020' and keep your flag flying; otherwise, remove the flag! Election people should be asking for removal of said flags after almost 4 months. There is as difference!
Tired teacher To the reader who wrote, "There is no way teachers are doing their full jobs when schools are barely open" - you are wrong! Teachers are working harder than ever. Many teachers have students in front of us and students virtually at the same time! On the occasions when all students can't be taught at the same time, we are pre-recording lessons for those at home to view independently and then teaching it to the students in the classroom. In classes such as science, teachers are having students at home do one thing and students in the classroom do something hands-on and then flipping the work when the kids flip later in the week. Then there are some kids that attend 4 days a week, so that is another thing to manage. Until you have been in our shoes, don't you dare say, "teacher vacation."

Daniel P. Merritt “Dan” March 12, 2021 West Henrietta: Dan passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on March 12, 2021 at age 57. He was predeceased by his father, Donald Merritt. MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay cool in the summer even when the engine shuts off. Begin Again Horse Rescue Microchip Pilot Program
Batavia
Phone: 585-343-3111
BY CHRISTINA M. ECKLUND Begin Again Horse Rescue (BAHR), of Lima New York, is pleased to announce that it has received a generous grant from the Kenneth A Scott Charitable Trust. This grant will allow the organization to run a pilot project to microchip all the equine in its program during 2021. In its 11 years dedicated to local equine rescue, BAHR has placed more than 270 of them and helped hundreds more to find safe haven in permanent homes. If the project proves successful, the rescue hopes to expand the program to include local community equine next year. For the first year of the pilot project, BAHR has obtained 200 microchips and two chip readers from Pet Link Inc. Included in the grant is a twenty-dollar honorarium for each equine earmarked to pay for veterinary implantation. It is hoped that all adopters and fostered caregivers will agree to take part in the new program during spring vaccine veterinary visits, so there should be no additional charges to the adopters for this service. “I am so thankful to the Kenneth A Scott Charitable Trust”, said Harriett Rubins, BAHRís Executive Director. “It makes possible one more level of safety-net to safeguard these equines that have had such bad experiences. We never want them to suffer again.” Additionally, Begin Again Horse Rescue is working to educate its surrounding equine communities to the benefits of microchipping. Microchipping affords an animal a permanent identification that cannot be separated or altered. The chips, painlessly embedded beneath the skin on the left side of the neck, are the size of a grain of rice and take seconds to implant. The chip numbers are registered with Pet Link online data base. They help prevent theft, aid identification and recovery during disasters, provide a mobile link to online health certificates and medical records, and they provide correct identification of equine at competitions to prevent fraud. Other benefits include traceability in disease outbreak scenarios, and they allow for rapid and efficient management of investigations into diseases or to missing animals. Most veterinarians have the chip readers. Begin Again Horse Rescue now has two, which we will use to help others identify their horses.

HOMETOWN Mary, like some of your neighbors, can’t drive anymore. She could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month, please call us to volunteer. We provide training and supplemental insurance.
G–ive- 244-8400 a-Lift lifespanrochester.org HOW AGING ADULTS CAN MAINTAIN THEIR MENTAL ACUITY Aging is associated with or linked to a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older. Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that won’t impact adults’ daily lives much at all. While physical side effects like diminished vision might not strike much fear in the hearts of aging men and women, those same people may be concerned and/or frightened by the notion of age-related cognitive decline. Some immediately associate such decline with Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and cognitive skills, ultimately compromising a person’s ability to perform even the simplest of tasks. But age-related cognitive decline is not always symptomatic of Alzheimer’s disease. Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near or pass retirement age.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Seniors Raising Grandchildren For many seniors, retirement plans can change instantly when it becomes apparent that they’ll need to raise their grandchildren. The reasons this can happen are many, and none of them good: parental drug use, arrest and incarceration, a dangerous military assignment, alcoholism and even death of the parents. The potential complications can be immediate: You have no extra room because you downsized, you’re in a strict 55-plus seniors community, you’re on a very limited Social Security budget, your health isn’t great ... and so much more. If you’re a senior who’s now in this position, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that 3 million children are being raised by grandparents. But help is available. Start with the Child Welfare Information Gateway (www.childwelfare. gov) and scroll to your state. Ask about Medicaid for Children, SNAP benefits, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and Supplemental Security Income for children. Raising Your Grandchildren (www.raisingyourgrandchildren.com) has a wealth of information. State Resources, for example, will take you to social workers, support groups and programs in your state. The legal aspect of raising your grandchildren can’t be ignored because it will impact all parts of your life. What you’re providing is called Kinship Care. Be sure you understand the differences between Formal, Informal, Temporary and Voluntary. Formal Kinship Care, for example, means the state has legal custody of the child but he lives with you. State laws vary, and you’ll have caseworkers, court appointments and more. Informal Kinship Care, on the other hand, leaves the courts and caseworkers out of your lives, but legal custody remains with the parents. That can be a problem when it comes to getting the child medical care and enrolling them in school. The only financial assistance you might be eligible for is TANF. Raising grandchildren is not easy. Get all the help and support you can.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Protect your face. Skin dries with age, but men can take steps to protect their skin and keep it glowing as they grow older. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and, ideally, one that includes moisturizer as well. Exposure to the sun without adequate protection can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles while increasing a man’s risk for skin cancer. Night creams that contain retinol can help smooth wrinkles and give skin a more even-toned look. Prescription night creams tend to be considerably more potent than over-the-counter alternatives.

Can Mushroom Microdose Help With Depression?
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2
---
Henrietta
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am battling depression and have a question about psilocybin. I stopped taking Effexor for my depression because I did not like the side effects. I also tried SAM-e, which had only a small effect. So, for the past three months I have been trying cognitive behavioral therapy, using certain tactics. I’ve cut back my days of work and avoid all news when not on the job. I stringently avoid social media. I don’t put myself into situations that I know will upset me. I am also limiting my alcohol consumption. Lately I’ve been reading about how microdosing the psilocybe mushroom can elevate or change moods for the better. I would like to know your opinion on the use of psilocybin for depression. It seems to be gaining traction, but my fear is that it can bring on degrees of psychosis. -- S.M. ANSWER: I found two studies on psilocybin, a naturally occurring chemical in 200 or so species of mushrooms, especially those of the genus psilocybe. One study from 2016 was in 29 people with cancer, and anxiety and depression: 60%-80% had “clinically significant reductions in depression or anxiety.” Another study (also from 2016) treated 12 patients with treatment-resistant depression with two doses of psilocybin, and their depression scores were reduced by more than half at five weeks. All 12 patients had adverse effects, usually mild, such as headache, nausea or confusion. Two patients had paranoia. All adverse effects lasted less than a day. While I am optimistic that this might lead to an additional option for therapy, these are very small studies. Further, the authors of the second study note “patients have taken pharmaceutical grade compounds of known strength and purity, under the supervision of trained therapists.” The authors and research institution “cannot advise on the procurement of illegal psychoactive substances, nor can we recommend self-medication.” I can’t emphasize that enough.

MICROCEPHALY BROUGHT INTO THE LIMELIGHT Conception and childbirth are miracles of life. While parents experience many joys during pregnancy and delivery, they must discuss potentially uncomfortable conversations that need to be addressed. This includes the potential that babies will born with birth defects. Over the last year, microcephaly, a rare but serious disability, has garnered substantial attention. Microcephaly is a neurological condition in which an infant’s head is significantly smaller than the heads of other children of the same age and sex, advises The Mayo Clinic. The condition is typically the result of the brain developing abnormally in the womb or not growing as it is supposed to after birth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says microcephaly can be an isolated condition, or it can occur in combination with other major birth defects. Depending on the severity of the condition, children with microcephaly can face any number of symptoms. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, symptoms of microcephaly include impaired cognitive development, delayed motor functions, dwarfism, seizures, difficulties with balance, and other neurological abnormalities. Although microcephaly is rare, according to the National Birth Defects Prevention Network, it may become more common. That’s because microcephaly has been linked to mothers who were exposed to the Zika virus while pregnant. Exposure to in utero substance abuse, as well as genetic or chromosomal issues, also can lead to microcephaly. Dr. Nassim Zecavati, an assistant professor of pediatrics and neurology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, says essentially anything that slows down brain growth in the womb or causes a severe deprivation of oxygen and blood flow before, during or after delivery can be problematic. Unfortunately, no treatment exists to return a child’s head and brain to normal size. Instead, treatment focuses on reducing the impact associated with neurological disabilities and subsequent physical disabilities. Early childhood intervention programs that include speech, physical and occupational therapy may be part of a child’s course of treatment. Certain medications can be prescribed to help with seizures or hyperactivity. Thanks to its link to the Zika virus, microcephaly has garnered considerable attention over the last year-plus. Though still rare, microcephaly is something expecting parents and couples planning to have children should familiarize themselves with.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Experience: A trial and error approach can work with various projects and problems. But applying such an approach to home improvement projects is risky and potentially dangerous, not to mention costly. Experienced professional contractors with strong track records (seek recommendations from friends or neighbors) won’t have to go through trial and error and are therefore more likely than DIYers to complete a project on time and on budget. 585-802-1544 KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Erect physical barriers around gardens. Barriers may not be gardeners’ first choices, as some people feel barriers such as wire cages or mesh coverings make it more difficult to tend to gardens and rob gardens of some of their aesthetic appeal. But coverings and wire cages can effectively prevent wildlife from trampling or eating plants while still allowing the gardens to get adequate sunlight. Make sure barriers extend to the ground so animals cannot access gardens by entering beneath the barricades.

Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Alternate tasks. Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens. By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.
HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
STRANGE BUT TRUE
Neighbor Lets His Dog Poop in My Yard DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor constantly lets his dog come into my yard and do his business. Sometimes the dog is off leash, and other times he is on the leash while the neighbor just stands there. I’m tired of picking up after this dog! What can I do? Should I go out and squirt the dog in the face with water? -- Frustrated in White Plains, New York DEAR FRUSTRATED: This isn’t the dog’s fault at all -- it’s the fault of the owner for allowing his dog into your yard. Squirting the dog in the face (or the owner) will not help things and will only escalate the situation. The next time the owner comes by, talk to him -- calmly -- and ask him not to let the dog poop in your yard, to keep the dog on a leash, and to pick up after the dog. Explain that keeping him on a leash keeps the dog safe. If the neighbor keeps letting the dog into your yard, or if you don’t feel safe talking to this person, then contact the city. White Plains, like many municipalities in the U.S., has a leash law and imposes fines on owners who don’t keep their dog on a leash, who don’t pick up after their dog, or who allow their pet to go onto someone else’s property without permission. And please, whatever you do, don’t take this out on the dog. Pets are unaware of boundaries unless they’re trained to stay away from certain areas. They don’t realize they’re doing something wrong, especially if the owner is not correcting them. It’s up to the owner to control his dog while outside. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

By Lucie Winborne * The Twitter bird actually has a name -- Larry, after Hall of Fame basketball player Larry Bird.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Shaving cream can be used as a spot remover for many carpets. Use only a small amount, and follow up with a damp cloth.” -- D.L. in New Brunswick, Canada * Here’s a great rule of thumb in the kitchen: The quicker it cooks, the more direct the heat. So, for a thin piece of steak that’ll cook quickly, a cast-iron pan fry will do nicely. For a thicker cut of, say, chicken, you should bake at a lower temp for a longer time. * To rid a shirt of a deodorant stain, sponge plain white vinegar onto the residue and rub briskly. * “Need sliced mushrooms for your salad or recipe? They are hard to cut, but you might already have the perfect tool for the job in your kitchen. If you have an egg slicer, get it out. It works very well for mushrooms, and it’s easier to use than trying to cut those slices yourself.” -- J.R. in Utah * Got an ink stain? Try using the ubiquitous nowadays (thankfully) hand sanitizer! Apply a little sanitizer to the ink stain, then use a clean, dry white rag to blot, checking the rag often and moving to a different spot on the rag as it takes up the ink. * To get clothing really clean, don’t overfill your washer. Oftentimes, we want to get the laundry done quickly by stuffing in as much as possible, thereby reducing the number of loads. But if there isn’t enough space for everything to move about, it can actually keep the clothing from getting clean. Never fill more than three-fourths full.

THE RIGHT WAY TO LEAVE A JOB Don’t shirk responsibilities. It can be tempting to slack off when another job awaits. The popular job-hunting site Monster.com says it can be human nature to do less when long-term accountability is removed. However, you never know when you might need a referral or even a new job. Leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of your employer at the end of your work history can put a black mark on your employee record.

Must be available to assist providers at all times, while also being able to work independently. HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.
