TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * One dung beetle can drag 1,141 times its own weight. * The future Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding dress was entirely paid for with ration coupons. * Red Solo cups have not only been honored in a song by country singer Toby Keith, they’re a common souvenir to bring back from the U.S. The novelty comes from their appearance in numerous movie party scenes. * American children are given an average of $3.70 per lost tooth. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Sun Exposure Nearly Does in Guinea Pigs DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two guinea pigs. Yesterday, I took them outside to get some sun. When I came back outside about 15 minutes later, they were both lying in their cage, completely stiff, as if they had been dead for hours. I thought they were dead. I brought them inside and was getting everything ready to bury them when one of them stirred very slowly, and then the other. Today, they are not as active, and they aren’t eating and only taking a little water when I give it to them through a dropper. What happened to them? Will they be OK? -- Analia R., via email DEAR ANALIA: Guinea pigs, also known as cavies, cannot regulate their body temperature very well. They should never be put into direct sunlight or a hot room. Your pets suffered heatstroke from being out in the sun, even though it was just a few minutes. This is most often fatal. I’m very surprised that they are both alive. They need to be treated very gently for the next several days. Contact their veterinarian (one who specializes in exotic pets), but do not bring them until the vet tells you to do so. Moving them can be very stressful. Continue gently giving them water through a dropper or syringe a few drops at a time. Place little bits of cucumber, lettuce or melon nearby; these have high water content and some nutrients. Cavies are extremely sensitive to sudden temperature changes, loud noises or rough handling. Be gentle with them and keep them in a comfortable location, out of direct sunlight. Send your comments, tips or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

S E V RA Pancake Angels Last week, we met two “Angels” at the Cartwright’s Maple Tree Inn. A great conversation ensued over the best buttermilk pancakes. It made our day special. When we went to leave, we found they had paid our check! Thank you to the two great Angels & safe travels! Elected Officials A village mayor sends out a letter endorsing 2 of 3 trustees up for election. One is elected and the one not endorsed is elected. You made it known you did not want the one as a trustee. I hope this letter was not mailed under taxpayer village dollars. I would not expect you to take such a political stance knowing this could backfire on you. It is up to the trustees to market themselves not you. As the mayor how do you do your job effectively now? We expect you to be fair and not hold grudges. Small towns have clicks but your job is to do what is right for everyone.
Easter Fun! On Saturday, March 27 the Riga Recreation Department held its annual Easter Egg Hunt. It looked a bit different this year as a parade was held instead. All egg hunters met at the Churchville Commons and were lead up Main Street by Grand Marshal “Easter Bunny” and then down Buffalo Road to the Village of Churchville’s Steedman Gazebo. There they were met by the Churchville LEO Club members and handed “goodie bags” filled with eggs. They then went and tried guessing how many jelly beans were in
What Teacher Vacation? In response to “Teacher Vacations:” Clearly you are not a teacher and have no idea what is going on with the schools. Most of the teachers are working even harder during this to make sure their students are getting their work done remotely. To say that school tax bills need to be reduced is ridiculous. Schools have had their aid slashed due to the state being almost bankrupt and have had to do so much more with less money. Of course, there probably are a few bad apples who are not really working during this, but isn’t that the case with every profession? If you want to be mad at someone, take it up with the state legislature and governor. Don’t blame the teachers and schools for this mess.

Thanks to the following organizations that made this a huge success: Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Churchville Lions & LEO clubs, Erin Maysick & her Scout Troop, Arlene’s Costumes, and of course-THE EASTER BUNNY! Educational System School employees need to get back to work or give me a refund on my school taxes! Strategies to Reduce Risk of Colon Cancer
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 70 years old. I seem to be getting more polyps (which are removed). In the past five years, I have gone from one diverticulum to extensive diverticulosis throughout my entire colon. I try to have a high-fiber diet and use psyllium in my oatmeal daily. What more can I do? Eliminate red meat entirely and go vegan? -- J.D. ANSWER: Polyps in the colon confer a higher risk of colon cancer, and the more polyps a person has, the more frequently they should be screened, preferably with colonoscopy. There are some lifestyle changes most people can make to reduce the risk of polyps and of colon cancer. Regular exercise and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables are clearly shown to reduce colon cancer risk. Fiber has long been thought to be protective, but the results of trials have been contradictory. Among the many other possible protections to colon cancer, aspirin probably has the most benefit, but aspirin has other risks as well. People at high risk for colon cancer should discuss the use of aspirin with their doctors. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are both 72 and of normal weight. I have fought high cholesterol and triglycerides for many years and have taken various statins for a long time. My triglycerides still trend high, but my other numbers are now normal. My husband eats a ton of processed meats, all the fat he wants and drinks three to five beers per day. His lipid panel results came back today, and his total cholesterol is 167, his LDL is 90, his HDL is 71, and his triglycerides are 29! He has never been on statin drugs. His only med is lisinopril for slightly high blood pressure. What I am concerned about is a CT scan done as part of a study we participated in. My husband’s results have mentioned calcification of heart arteries over the years, and the most recent says he has “SEVERE calcification of coronary arteries.” I want him to go to a cardiologist, but his family doc says that this is not a problem and as long as he keeps his blood pressure low, he can live a long time with this. He is satisfied with that answer. I’m really anxious to hear your thoughts about him needing to see a specialist. I hope you will be able to shed some light on the calcification and the reason why it happens with such good cholesterol readings. -- D.B. ANSWER: There are several important lessons in your story. The most important is that a poor diet increases the risk for heart disease even in a person with normal or good cholesterol results. Of people with a heart attack, 21% had cholesterol levels that would not trigger treatment with a statin drug. I suspect, but can’t be sure, that your husband has blockages in his coronary arteries; the severe calcification of the coronary arteries is an indicator that it is very likely. I would add my recommendation to yours that your husband see a cardiologist. He has a LOT of work to do at improving his diet, he is drinking more alcohol than recommended and because of the coronary artery calcification, I suspect his new cardiologist would be strongly considering medication treatment to reduce heart disease risk. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Stimulus Payment Merry-Go-Round A third round of stimulus payments are on their way. But has your second one shown up yet? Next question: Did you file last year’s 2019 taxes on paper instead of e-filing? If so, that might well be the reason you don’t have your money yet. The IRS got behind on processing the paper tax forms we sent a year ago. If all had gone well, those who were eligible should have received a $600 stimulus check (the second one) by Jan. 29, 2021. The IRS has a specific page for you to check the status of your stimulus payment, but it’s only good for the third stimulus check. All information for your first and second stimulus money has been removed from their website. Confused yet? You’re not alone. Start with www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment and scroll to Get My Payment. Click on it and fill out the information. You’ll go to a page that tells you the status of the payment you’re to receive now, the third payment. If it says that payment information is Not Available, it means you’re not going to receive a payment the easy way (and might be why your second payment is still missing). On the Get My Payment page, click on Frequently Asked Questions to see what applies to you. Even if you don’t normally file, you’ll need to file for 2020 (preferably e-file) if you want that stimulus money quickly. Look for Line 30 on the Form 1040 or 1040-SR. It’s called the Recovery Rebate Credit. If you received Notice 1444 or 1444B in the mail from the IRS, it will tell you what figures to use. If you did receive the money but your financial situation has changed and you should have received a different amount, click on Recovery Rebate Credit. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

Celebrating Bruce Hegedorn, Entrepreneur & Founder of Popular Hegedorn’s Market in Webster BY SCOTT WURTZEL hen one thinks of family run stores in Webster, Hegedorn’s immediately comes to mind. Located on the corner of Hard and Ridge road since 1953, Hegedorn’s supermarket has been a go-to in Webster for over 60 years. Sadly, on February 17th, Hegedorn’s founder, Bruce Hegedorn, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to family and community. Jonathan Gonzalez, one of his grandsons, shares the type of man Bruce Hegedorn was.
W
“He was really a very humble and modest guy, despite the big reputation,” Gonzalez said. “I can’t remember many people that he didn’t mesh well with. He had this quality about him that allowed him to get along with everyone. He was very positive and very upbeat. I just remember later into his life, he would be out in his garden all day, working, or he would be up here at the grocery store.” Gonzalez fondly remembers the things he did for the business, as well as his family. “From a work perspective, the memory I have is of him enjoying the people there and doing a lot of the little things, like stocking the shelves or picking up garbage in the parking lot,” Gonzalez stated. He also remembers how his grandfather truly cherished his children and his grandchildren. “One of his favorite things was when, almost every year, we would go over to his house Christmas Day,” he said. “Getting a big photo with the “He created whole family, all the grandkids such great and everyone running around... he loved that. That was a big relationships, highlight to him. I remember especially at him savoring Christmas all the work, with years I was growing up.”
all of his people, and his customers too!”
Gonzalez learned a lot from his grandfather, even just by being around him. “One of the most important things he - Jonathan Gonzalez, taught me was about taking Grandson to the late care of people. That is the kind Bruce Hegedorn of lesson he didn’t specifically have to tell me, but he showed it in the way he treated everyone,” Gonzalez explained. “He created such great relationships, especially at work, with all of his people, and his customers too. They all knew him so well.” “I really learned [about the way he treated others] from what I heard about him from everyone else,” Gonzalez added. “Also, his work ethic was something that everyone would talk about as well, and he clearly demonstrated that over the years. He was a hard worker; he never stopped. He was always go, go, go, and I really took away those two things from him.” When discussing Mr. Hegedorn’s motivation for running the store, Gonzalez said his biggest motivation was his family and that they were his number one priority. He also made sure to state just how important Hegedorn’s was to his grandfather. “When he started the business, he purchased what was a dairy GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

farm in the 50s that his father owned. He wasn’t given it; he purchased it. He really had to start from scratch. He developed it into a business that’s been around for over 65 years,” Gonzalez said. “I think that’s an incredible accomplishment, and Hegedorn’s meant a lot to him,” Gonzalez said. “Probably more important than Hegedorn’s, though, were all the people he had encountered from day one in 1953 until [his passing]. That’s the lifeblood of Hegedorn’s, and it still continues to be. Those people meant so much to him as well as all that he accomplished there.” Mr. Hegedorn was also heavily involved in his local community. “Over the years he had such an impact with so many different local organizations, especially in Webster, and that impact runs pretty deep,” Gonzalez said. “As far as the development of Webster, going back to the 50s, there wasn’t a whole lot here. There was a lot of land and not much else. What it became today and what you see, he probably couldn’t imagine that, but he was very ahead of the times, and made a lot of smart business decisions in terms of purchasing land and having an eye towards the future. He made a lot of smart moves back when maybe a lot of people didn’t quite see the future that he envisioned for Webster. He was always thinking forward, and he was never content with the status quo,” Gonzalez concluded. “He always wanted to push ahead and advance to what was going to be next.” Enjoy this article? NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Do you store plastic wrap in the refrigerator? Many home experts will tell you that storing plastic wrap in your fridge or freezer can help with the stickiness factor -- the plastic is easier to manipulate and get into place when cold, but still stays put. Try it and see! * Keep soap scum at bay on your glass shower doors with a layer of car wax. But do NOT let the wax get on your shower floors. That could be unsafe. * Want delicious fried chicken crust but not the dripping oil? Baste chicken pieces with mayonnaise, then dredge in crushed cracker crumbs mixed with a bit of flour. Bake and enjoy. * From L.D.W. in Illinois: “When I have a recipe, I put all the ingredients on the counter, and as I use each one, I put it away. My daughter and daughter-inlaw like the idea, as they at one time or another, have forgotten an item.” I like that one, too, L.D.W. A well-prepared cook makes a delicious meal. * Laundry soap -- liquids, powder and pacs -- should be added to the water before clothing. This allows the soap to disperse correctly throughout the water and also can avoid “grease spotting” that sometimes occurs when detergents land on dry fabric. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

FOOD ALLERGY FAST FACTS Food allergies can develop from birth, and some last a lifetime. Others are developed at different ages and may be outgrown. No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life-threatening problem for children. Although food allergies may be managed more easily at home, they present different challenges for school-aged children. School nurses and administrative officials should be informed about food allergies, especially if they are severe enough to warrant medical intervention, such as medication. Food allergies are quite common. Consider these allergy facts that can help parents better understand any issues their children might face. • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • One in 13 Canadians, or roughly 2.5 million people, are affected by a food allergy, according to estimates from the Allergy, Genes and Environmental Network. • Around 7 percent of Canadian children under the age of 18 report having at least one food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Food allergies are an immune system response to the food, not a case of digestive intolerance. • Among food allergic children, peanuts are the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. • Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. • A recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that children are taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies. • Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. That is why reading product labels is vital. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A festive and celebratory day for Christians, Easter Sunday is a time for sharing the good news of Jesus’ resurrection. His body is discovered missing from the tomb, and Jesus appears to his followers again showing proof that He is alive. Typically, Easter Sunday is one of the most well-attended Sunday services for Christians. It also is a day to spend with family, and many families share large meals to mark the end of the Lenten season.

Are you using oil, propane, or electric resistance to heat your home or water? Do you want a more efficient way to heat and cool your home? Consider clean heat pump technology. Heat pumps will help you find the perfect balance of comfort and savings all year-round while reducing your carbon footprint. These all-in-one heating and air conditioning systems optimize the temperature throughout your home to use less energy and can save you up to 30% on your cooling and heating costs. * How do electric heat pumps compare to other traditional heating and cooling equipment? • Warmer. Heat pumps provide warmth more efficiently than conventional oil, propane, or electric resistance heating systems. • Cooler. Heat pumps cool more efficiently when summer temperatures climb. • Comfier and cozier. Heat pumps provide quiet, even heating and cooling throughout your home or business. • Easier. Heat pumps require minimal maintenance. • Cleaner, healthier, and safer. There is no combustion of fossil fuels, fuel storage, or carbon monoxide emissions associated with heat pumps.
