REDUCE INSTANCES OF DISTRACTED DRIVING Distracted driving is a problem that results in injuries and claims the lives of thousands of people each year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines distracted driving as any activity that diverts attention from driving. In 2015, 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 injured in the United States as a result of distracted driving. Allstate says distracted driving is now the No. 1 risk on Canadian roads, contributing to eight in 10 collisions. It is relatively easy to avoid becoming a statistic by reducing distractions behind the wheel. Put away tech devices: One of the easiest ways to reduce distractions is to keep phones and tablets out of reach while driving. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says sending or reading a text message takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for about five seconds, or long enough to cover a football field while driving at 55 mph. It removes a person’s attention from the road; takes his or her hands off of the wheel; and it mentally engages the brain when a driver’s focus should be on driving. Devices should be stowed away when driving. Drivers should pull over if they need to send a text or read a message. Set the GPS ahead of a trip Global positioning systems have revolutionized the way motorists get to and from locations. They can help signal upcoming traffic and find the best routes possible. Just like other devices, GPS can be a distraction, especially if drivers are taking their eyes off the road and constantly pressing buttons on the map. Enter the destination address before departing and place the GPS in a position that it can be glanced at, which will not impede vision. Better yet, let a passenger navigate. Limit or skip phone calls: Many people find that making phone calls while on the road is an efficient use of time. Yet the personal injury experts at Lehmbecker Law say even when drivers use hands-free devices their brains can remain distracted for 27 seconds after using voice commands to dial a number. Engaging in phone conversations will continue to take drivers’ minds off of their driving responsibilities. Drowsy driving is dangerous: Being tired can be a distraction as well. Geico insurance reports a U.S. government study showed that 37 percent of drivers have nodded off or actually fallen asleep at least once while driving. Drowsiness increases the risk of a crash by roughly four times. Those who become drowsy behind the wheel should pull over. Skip the infotainment package: New vehicle infotainment systems can take one’s attention off of the road for long periods of time. According to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers using invehicle technologies like voice-based and touch-screen features may find themselves unusually distracted. In addition to these tips, drivers can reduce the number of passengers contributing to distractions, turn down the volume on the radio, and pull over when eating on the road. Reducing distractions can save lives. AUTOMOTIVE

Catholic Charities, Community Action and Salvation Army Assist with Utilities, Food & Housing/Rent Funds now available for a limited time. BY LAURA E. JACOBS, VICE PRESIDENT

C

atholic Charities’ Genesee County office, Community Action of Orleans & Genesee and Salvation Army Batavia Corps are joining together to meet the needs of the local community when it comes to providing basic emergency assistance as a result of the ongoing pandemic. All three organizations received Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds to provide basic emergency assistance, including utility bills, food and rent/housing costs. The funds are only available for a limited time for residents of Genesee County.

“While there are currently no disconnect notices or eviction notices for renters with moratoriums in place, the day will come when the moratoriums, which have been in place throughout the pandemic, will be lifted,” said Lisa Wittmeyer, case manager of emergency services, Community Action of Orleans & Genesee. “Please don’t wait for the notices to receive help. We’re here and able to assist those in need now.” “The ongoing pandemic has impacted all of us, including many who may not have needed assistance before,” said Kelly Grimaldi, Tri-county District Director, Catholic Charities. “We are ready to help meet basic food needs, providing food vouchers to shop at a local grocery store to choose the items needed to supplement items available from food pantries. In addition, our staff is always available to provide hope for both individuals and families by connecting them with other programs and services they may need.” “It’s very concerning that people are in the mindset that they can wait or do not have to pay their rent,” said Todd Rapp, Coordinator of Emergency Disaster Services, The Salvation Army. “Eventually, evictions will happen and those in need should not wait to reach out to us for help. We have funds available to assist them now.” If you are or someone you know needs basic assistance, please contact Catholic Charities (for food assistance) at 585-343-0614, Community Action of Orleans & Genesee (for utility assistance) at 585-343-7798, or Salvation Army (for rent/housing assistance) at 585-343-6284. About Catholic Charities Catholic Charities has helped individuals and families in need since its founding in 1923. That need is varied and widespread— from emergency assistance to mental health counseling and treatment, and from specialized services for older adults to help with job training and education. Catholic Charities empowers children, families and seniors to achieve meaningful, healthy and productive lives. In all situations, Catholic Charities delivers support to meet immediate needs, and then assesses clients for other needs to ensure long-term success. An excellent steward of the contributions it receives, Catholic Charities earns high ratings from Charity Navigator for transparency and sound fiscal management and is a Better Business Bureau Accredited Charity. Catholic Charities also receives the highest ratings from the Council on Accreditation for quality service. For more information, visit ccwny.org.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your recent article on animal shelters. It was spot on with advice for donors. Many rescues do not advertise locally, but online through Petfinder. com and AdoptAPet.com. Local advertising and signs usually result in animals being deposited on a rescue’s property without invitation or contact. If people want to help, please research your local area and find a rescue. Contact them and see what they need. Most rescues need specific foods, medicines, etc., and always need monetary contributions. These are the best ways to help out, through contact and conversations with the people involved. Local animal control and shelters can use help too. One of the most important things to remember is that almost all rescues are nonprofit, charitable entities. All donations, money or otherwise, go completely to helping out the animals. There are no “salaries” for the persons running the organization as there are with so many other “charities.” Just research online the salaries paid out with contributions from the public for many common charities that many donate to each year. Do I speak from experience? Yes. My wife and I have been doing dog rescue for 16 years, ever since she returned home from helping in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina left so many animals needing rescue and help getting back with their families. We have helped close to 1,600 rescues find forever, loving homes. -- R.M., SusieQ DogResQ, Inc. DEAR R.M.: Thank you for this insider info. It confirms that acting locally to help animals, either through donating supplies or money or your time, can have the greatest impact. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. S E V RA Hospitality at the ballpark Waiting in line at Frontier Field on the first day tickets for the 2021 season would be sold, we were among several people who got there early in order to get our favorite seats. A good half-hour or so before the 10 a.m. opening of the ticket windows, Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason emerged from his office carrying a glass coffee pot and a stack of cups. He went down one line and up the other, offering free coffee to anyone who wanted a bit of refreshment. When a computer glitch extended the wait by several minutes, people were still in a good mood because of Dan’s kind gesture. Thanks, Megan! I went to Brockport to go grocery shopping and have to say hats off to Megan. She sliced my turkey and roast beef at the deli section. Nowadays, a lot of people just don’t seem to care about the customers. Perhaps they are burnt out. Still, it is such a pleasure when you do run across someone who does their job not only well, but with a smile on their face, also. Thanks! Thank you, Brockport lab! I went to the Lab in Brockport on Tuesday, May 4th. I don’t look forward to getting my blood drawn, but then who does? I have been going to the Lab in Brockport for several years because they do such a great job. They draw the blood quickly and painlessly. I have bad veins, so it is no easy task, plus the fact that I am Chicken Little. This time, I had a woman from Russia who did the draw. I apologize for not recalling her name. She did such a great job that I didn’t have any marks or black and blues, which at times has occurred at other places when other phlebotomists have drawn my blood. Once again, Brockport Labs did an exceptional job. Thanks!

Your Choice You don’t want to be segregated if you choose not to vaccinate? If you live in a community and want to be part of that community, then you have to follow the rules. Your choice indeed. Don’t vaccinate if you don’t want to, but go live in seclusion because I certainly don't want you putting my family, community, or me at risk by your choice. Unspoken Since when is it acceptable to perpetuate racism? The Asian American community has been - and continues to be - victimized, and what do we do? We give a racist woman a platform to spew falsehoods and hateful speech towards an entire marginalized community for everyone in [local] county to read. Shame on those who don’t see an issue with it. Remember Customer Service I went to a well-known chain store for some odds and ends. I went to the checkout counter where the cashier was finished with his customer. He and she were just chatting, like they had all the time in the world. I waited patiently as they continued with their conversation. The lady glanced over at me, and did seem to look uneasy, as the cashier continued to speak with her as if I were invisible. Finally, I had to say something. I remarked on how I would like to get in on their conversation, but could he (the cashier) just check me out. He was the most unpleasant cashier I have seen in a while. Cold as ice. In fact, it was almost like he was mad at me for interrupting his conversation. Next time you know someone at your check out counter and you want to talk to them, just tell them that you will continue the conversation after you check out the customer behind them. That is what you are getting paid to do. And get rid of the attitude. A smile would go a long way. Taxpayers Hold our officials accountable! Kitchen aprons A local village bakery allows its workers to wear their aprons while running all sorts of errands in our town. The decision to become an organ donor is a selfless act that quite often saves lives. Many people sign up to be organ donors when getting or renewing their driver’s licenses. But those same people may not know that they also can sign up to be tissue donors.

And Feel Rewarded

According to Donate Life America, one tissue donor can help more than 75 people heal. Donated tissue is often used during surgeries and can help people in life-threatening situations. People with severe burns often benefit from tissue donation, as do athletes who have suffered torn ligaments or tendons and active and veteran military members who have been injured during combat.

MTF Biologics, a New Jerseybased organization that has spent more than 30 years developing tissue grafting solutions to help people heal, advises all people, regardless of their age or medical histories, to consider themselves potential tissue donors. Much like with organ donors, a person’s condition at the time of death will determine if their tissue can donated. That means prospective tissue donors have nothing to lose by signing up. Removal Is Best Option for Tumor Inside Kidney

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

---

Henrietta

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 62 years of age and in excellent health. I run or hike 3 miles or more on most days, and road bike, swim and weight train. I eat sensibly, and I don’t drink, smoke or take drugs. I don’t drink coffee or even take aspirin for pain. My last physical exam showed no problems, and my blood and urine tests were fine. Recently, I was diagnosed with a small tumor inside my right kidney. It’s about a 2.5 cm solid mass with no rough edges at this time. The MRI showed “a 2.4 cm mildly enhancing solid mass concerning for a renal neoplasm.” It also showed that the left kidney has a single 1.2 cm cortical cyst over its upper pole aspect. Please explain what this means. The options for treatment are to completely remove the kidney and see if it is cancerous or just monitor the tumor and see if it continues to grow and remove later. The doctor said the whole kidney has to be removed, because of the central location of the tumor. The doctor also said a biopsy is not a good idea where the mass is located for fear of releasing cancerous cells within the kidney that could move quickly throughout the body. Removal is a drastic measure, no doubt, to test for kidney cancer. Should I just monitor and wait to see what the tumor does or operate and have the kidney removed. What medical action do you suggest that I do? -- B.J.R. ANSWER: I am sorry to hear about your kidney tumor. A solitary kidney mass in a man in his 60s is always suspicious for kidney cancer. A 2.4 cm tumor is large enough to provoke serious concern: In a recent study, in people who had their tumors removed, 83 percent of tumors that size were kidney cancer. Because of the location, a partial removal of just the mass is impossible, so the choice between watching and waiting versus taking the whole tumor out should take into consideration the very high likelihood that this is cancer. Kidney cancer can spread to other organs. If you were my patient, I likely would advise surgery. If you were not a good risk for surgery (say, in your 80s with multiple medical problems), then I might consider watchful waiting. In your case, I think going for surgery is the wiser course. Being so healthy will make your treatment much less risky.

Henrietta Public Library: Race and Placemaking in Rochester Thursday, June 3 | 7-8:30 pm Kathryn Mariner shares insights from her ongoing anthropological research on race and placemaking in Rochester. Placemaking is a process through which people attach meaning and importance to physical space, in both concrete and abstract ways. Her work draws on qualitative research, artistic production, and community engagement, examining how marginalized communities create spaces of connection and possibility under conditions of upheaval. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * There are many fancy cleaners for sale for wood and laminate floors. Truth is, all you need is regular sweeping and a clean, damp mop. Never use harsh cleaners on wood, and do not use too much moisture. * D.D. in Missouri keeps morning cereal crisp by using two bowls. Bite by bite dipped in milk is the perfect remedy for avoiding a soggy spoonful! * Use white chalk to fill pin holes in the wall before painting. You can also use this tactic to hide holes if you are unable to paint the white walls of a rental. It simply fills the hole, making it “disappear.” * Save prescription medicine bottles and use them to sort beads or findings for beadwork or jewelry making. Bonus: Store the bottles upside down in a plastic storage bin so you can see what’s in the bottles without having to sort through all of them. * Add chocolate syrup to your cake mix for a deliciously deep flavor when making a chocolate cake. * Check your pillows: Press into the pillow at the spot where your head rests. If the pillow doesn’t spring back when you remove your hands, it’s time to replace it.

Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Favorite Foods Missing From Grocery Shelves You’d think that the grocery store shortages would be long gone by now. But no ... they never completely went away. Only the missing items have changed. My neighbor and I laugh and compare notes about “the toilet paper of the month,” recalling the long period when getting name-brand toilet paper was impossible around here. At this point, the missing item is a type of soup, which has been gone for nearly four weeks. A particular flavor of baked beans, gone. Nosalt canned green beans, vanished. Jasmine rice, steel-cut oatmeal, low-sodium tuna ... no more. Even the tags are missing from store shelves in all three shopping locations here, and managers can’t order them. My neighbor and I weren’t laughing today, however, when we realized it had been a full month since a certain chocolate bar had been seen on shelves in any store here. “We’re in trouble,” she said, and she’s right. “Do we dare order it online?” she wondered? We’re considering doing just that. The worst, though, was when I couldn’t find the one cat food my elderly kitty is supposed to eat. For health issues, she can’t have anything else. I finally called the manufacturer and was told that they were unable to produce it due to lack of ingredients. Eventually, and just in time, it became available and I ordered a three-month supply. But it’s something I now track on a weekly basis. Here’s what I found after contacting a few food manufacturers: Many of them are cutting out, forever, products that were slow movers. If certain food items have vanished from your store’s shelves, it might be time to do an online search. Look for “discontinued foods.” You could discover that it’s time to stop looking because those items just aren’t coming back.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

MAKE THE MOST OF LIMITED SPACE Discard some items. Homeowners who are downsizing from large homes may need to part with some of their furniture to make their transition to smaller homes go more smoothly. For example, homeowners may need to get by with just one bedroom nightstand and may even need to replace their existing nightstands with something more compact. Discarding living room end tables and downsizing to a smaller coffee table also can help homeowners make smaller common areas more welcoming and less cluttered.

KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Fight intruders with odor. Stray cats may mistake gardens for litter boxes and enter them to relieve themselves. Preventing such intrusions can be as simple as placing items around the garden to reduce the likelihood that gardens will be mistaken for litter boxes. Peels from oranges and lemons or coffee grounds can be placed in the garden and can emit odors strong enough to deter cats.

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES (NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task. Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money.

OTHER

How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment. You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut • Noncombustible

• Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. DID YOU KNOW? If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aerobics. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields. EMPLOYMENT

STEPS TO LEAVE A JOB GRACEFULLY Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40. People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road.

EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas. The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce. As the economy continues to improve, job prospects follow suit. According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects. Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads. Page 28
